MOTHER OF GOD COVINGTON, KY

SEPTEMBER 20, 202025TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE PASTORDear Friends,

I seem to be getting good at stirring up trouble without intending to. Last week I spoke about the reading from Sirach where we hear, "Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight," and Jesus' parable concerning the forgiveness of debts.

Certainly there are many things to be angry about. People (on both sides of the aisle) mentioned to me the political situation in particular, and the racism and violence that are so present in our country. The shooting of the two police officers who were targeted in their police car, and the protestors who tried to keep them from the emergency room, is an especially egregious example. My point, and the point of the Scriptures, was not that there are not good reasons to be angry. Rather, we are challenged to reflect on how our anger helps us, or our society, or those around us.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of "militant non-violence," which opposes evil with love and without anger, bitterness and rancor. Mahatma Gandhi spoke of "satyagraha," or "truth force," to make the same point. Both base their philosophies of non-violence on the teachings of Jesus, who taught us to love our enemies and pray for our persecutors, to turn the other cheek, and to return good for evil. This is the most radical and counter-intuitive teaching of Jesus, and the most challenging.

Loving our enemies is not denying that they are our enemies. We do not deal in fantasy. When we see political or societal situations that are evil and destructive, we must stand up to them and seek to change things but without hatred and anger in our hearts. If we hold on to the anger that we believe is "justified," then we are contributing to the negativity in the world. Even when trying to accomplish good, we are part of the problem. This is why Christians are not allowed the luxury of even justified anger.

Holding on to anger will also harm us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It is a poison, a cancer that corrodes and damages us in every way imaginable.

Hatred will never conquer hatred. Anger will never defeat anger. Violence may briefly stop violence, but will ultimately lead to greater violence. Only love, mercy, compassion and forgiveness will accomplish these things.

Along these lines, over the past few weeks I have been accused of being a radical liberal Democrat and of being an arch-conservative Republican, a supporter of Joe Biden, and a supporter of Donald Trump, of not caring enough about abortion and of caring too much about abortion.

In my own defense, I am not a Republican or a Democrat, and I will not be voting for either Joe Biden or Donald Trump. My plan is to write in a candidate, who I have not yet determined. I strive to be pro-life across the board, which is why I oppose abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, war, racism, torture, and violence in all its forms, and why I support just and compassionate treatment of migrants and refugees, prisoners, the poor, and victims of crime and abuse. I try, not always successfully, to be faithful to these matters and to Christ in general, without anger and wrath in my heart.

(Please read the item below on the RCIA for Catholics.)

IMPORTANCE OF VOTINGWhoever you vote for, we all know that this is one of

the most important elections in our lifetime. Please make sure to vote. If you wish to cast an absentee ballot, you can go on the website for the State of Kentucky, and it will guide you for requesting a ballot.

DIOCESAN PARISH ANNUAL APPEALWe are doing very well in the latest returns for the

Diocesan Parish Annual Appeal (DPAA). Our parish goal for the diocese, was $48,400.00. As of Monday, September 14, $94,016 had been pledged, of which $87,552 has been given. That puts us $45,616.00 over goal. That final amount comes back to the parish, and remains with the parish. Any money that is donated to the DPAA at this point comes directly to the parish, and none of it is taxed for the diocese.

Thank you to all who have donated. If you have not already done so, please consider making a donation to the DPAA.

CONVERT INSTRUCTION CLASSESIf you are interested in becoming Catholic, or in

exploring that possibility, we have begun our Convert Instruction Classes. These meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, in the church hall. Come to the courtyard on the west side of church, and go down the steps to the left of the ramp going into church. You can call me at 859-816-3198 for more information.

RCIA FOR CATHOLICSUnfortunately, far too many Catholics have a very

poor understanding of their Catholic faith. There are three questions that Catholics should be able to answer. 1) What do Catholics believe? 2) Why do they believe what they believe? 3) What difference do those beliefs make?

We are in the second year of a study of the United States Catechism for Adults that I have called “An RCIA for Catholics.” We are covering the moral section of the Catechism now, which focuses on the Ten Commandments. This week we will be reflecting on the Fifth Commandment--You shall not kill.

Page 3: Mother of God Churchmother-of-god.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Bulletin-9-20-20.pdfSep 20, 2020  · violence," which opposes evil with love and without anger, bitterness and rancor.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 20, 2020

Pope John Paul II described the present struggle as that between the Culture of Death and the Gospel of Life. The Culture of Death holds that some human lives are more valuable than others, and that it is acceptable to kill in order to accomplish certain goals or agendas. Certainly, this includes abortion, which is the intentional killing of an innocent and defenseless human being, but also includes issues such as capital punishment, euthanasia, suicide and assisted suicide, murder, war, and the use of embryonic stem cells for research. Racism, abuse, and torture, and any other behavior or action which demeans and denies the basic dignity of any human being, also is part of the Culture of Death.

The Gospel of Life proclaims that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and is a child of God, and is, therefore, sacred and holy. Each life must be respected, protected and honored.

The RCIA for Catholics sessions are recorded and put on the parish website each Thursday. The previous sessions are archived on the website and can be viewed there. They are also on Facebook and on YouTube.

ST. MATTHEW, APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST

Tax collectors were among the most hated and despised members of the Jewish community in Jesus' time. This was not just because everyone hates paying taxes, but because in this situation, they were working for the Roman oppressors and the taxes collected did not go to improvements and services for their own country, but were sent back to Rome. The tax collectors were collaborators with the enemy and were notorious for padding people's tax bill to take the money for themselves. They were stealing from their neighbors, family and friends to enrich themselves.

Matthew was a tax collector. When he encounters Jesus, he is in the marketplace collecting taxes. Chances are he was familiar with Jesus and had perhaps heard His talk, but could not imagine that Jesus would want anything to do with him. Jesus called to him, and said that He wanted to come to Matthew's house for dinner. This would have been a great scandal to the good Jews in the town, for Jesus would have been made unclean by going to the house of a sinner.

A famous saying that I like tells us: "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future." Encouraging words.

This Monday is the Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.

SAINT PIUS OF PIETRELCINA (PADRE PIO)

Wednesday, September 23 is the Feast of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio. He was an Italian Franciscan friar, during the Twentieth Century (1887-1968) who was known for his special spiritual gifts.

He was best known for bearing the stigmata (the wounds of Christ), but also for bi-location, reading souls, and more. When Karol Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II) was a student in Rome, he made a pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio lived, to meet him and to go to confession to him. During their conversation, Padre Pio told the young priest that he would one day be Pope.

SAINT JOHN DE BREBEUF AND COMPANIONS

Fathers John de Brebeuf and Isaac Joques, and their companions, were eight Jesuit missionaries working in Canada with the Huron Indians in the 17th century. The Hurons were at war with the Iroquois tribe. The Iroquois considered the Jesuits to be targets because they were ministering to their enemies, the Hurons. In the 1640s, they were captured, tortured, and murdered.

In 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized them and declared them to be known as the North American Martyrs. Their feast day is Saturday, September 26.
