Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. The Greatwood Geysers swim team is preparing for another summer of swimming and excitement! In our 15th year as part of the Southwest Houston Recreational Swim League (SHRSL), the Geysers continue to emphasize good sportsmanship, team pride and competition with an emphasis on having fun along the way. The swim season will run from May 1st – July 11th.

week of May and are held after school Monday through Friday until school is out. Summer practices are also held in the afternoons but times may change slightly. Swim meets will be on Mondays starting on June 5 through July 3. The date for Meet of Champions is being finalized but will be between July 6th and July 8. All-Stars is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11. This schedule is subject to change.

Jethro Tull: By Ian Anderson

Ian Anderson will return to the United States for select performances in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, including Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land on May 30.

Just like any other parent, parents with children diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities continually consider the options that the future will offer their child, but as each year passes and their child gradually approaches the threshold of adulthood, there is a question that settles heavy on their minds: What do I do now?

While in school, their child lives in a comfort zone of familiar faces, routines and lessons, but graduation typically presents a challenging obstacle for parents.

“Eventually their child ages out of school and the parents don’t know what to do,” said Sugar Land’s John Watson, a married father of three, the youngest of whom is diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

“What ends up happening most of the time, unfortunately, is nothing,” Watson said. “And it’s not to the fault of the parents.”

More often than not, the parents are overwhelmed with life, Watson explained.

Then there is the prevalence of most children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) being reluctant to step outside of their comfort zones.

“We pushed Emma to be involved with everyone and in as many activities, but you have to understand it’s easy for people with IDD to stay indoors,”

Watson said. “But integration matters. It doesn’t just benefit people with IDD but everyone in the community as well.”

In efforts to push for that integration Bloom and his wife created Bloom Community, a local nonprofit that helps educate business — or as he sees them, potential employers — on the benefits of hiring people with IDD in capacities beyond bagging groceries or cleaning positions.

As fate would have it Watson and his daughter Emma were at a community event also attended by Kevin Barker, Texana’s director of Intellectual & Developmental Provider Services.

Barker oversees behavior support, day habilitation, nursing, residential, supported employment, and vocational services for Texana’s six county region — responsibilities that greatly interested Watson.

A conversation was struck. A lunch date was set. And by the end of it all Watson said he wanted to help Barker with Texana’s efforts to get clients hired by providing Texana’s job coaches with resources and strategies when meeting with potential employers, through Bloom Community.

One of the resource materials Bloom Community developed was a professional video featuring insight from local employers who have hired people with IDD. In the video employers describe the work ethic, compassion, dedication and joy of working with people with IDD.

“What we stress are for employers to consider a clients abilities, not disabilities, Watson said.

developmental disabilities to become active participants in the community at large,” Watson said. “When this happens it gives people with disabilities to grow into all they can be. This also results in the community as a whole growing into something beautiful.

“Think about it, a lot of us connect through our community through our work.”

Introducing Bloom Cycle For a little more than 30 years Watson was an

executive in the mortgage industry, including owning his own mortgage baking firm which he eventually sold a regional bank. But having retired, Watson said he now relishes his new position as president of Bloom Community because of the potential impact he can have in the intellectual and developmental disabilities community.

And that impact is starting at Texana. In addition to providing assistance with job

placement, Bloom Community also features a project called Bloom Cycle, which is a cycling class for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In addition to his mortgage experience, Watson also spent a decade teaching indoor cycling, an activity he felt people with IDD would enjoy.

“It was John and Manuel Lopez, the Texana Education and Employment Services Manager, who took that vision and made it a reality,” Barker said. “It would not have been possible without John’s donation of the spin cycles and the many hours he spent over several months developing the curriculum and training the instructors.”

Having witnessed his daughter thrive by participating in sports adapted for children with

disabilities, Watson stressed that just like their peers who are not diagnosed with disabilities, people with IDD can learn much from sporting activities.

“Sports teach participation skills and encourage people to engage with one another,” Watson said. “The thing about cycling is this: If you can sit on these stationary bikes, you can do the class.

“Cycling is a way that Texana clients can have a safe and fun time while exercising.”

Bloom Community has donated eight stationary bikes to Texana for Bloom Cycle, which is held twice a week for an hour at Texana’s Rosenberg Learning Center. Around 21 clients have signed up for the class.

“Bloom Cycle’s mission encompasses what each student will get out of the Spin Cycling classes: fun, improved health, and c o n f i d e n c e i n themselves. That is what we are seeing.”

In addition to Watson, five other trained instructors lead the class, which also features music and an incentive

program. In the cycling room there is a Champions Board on display and when riders complete the class they receive a star on the board. Once five classes are complete, the rider is then awarded a Bloom Cycle T-shirt.

a laugh. “I’ve been told by people from Texana that they wear those shirts with great pride and makes them feel like they’re part of something cool.”

“My primary goal with Bloom Cycle is to encourage the riders — that’s what a participant is called — to keep coming back. There are some riders in the class who barely pedal and that is OK,” Watson added. “The focus is first on having fun and building that community feel. After that the health will come. The fitness will come. Bloom Cycle is about having fun with friends; we want them to feel excited about being a part of something fun and cool.”

Blooming Nationwide

Watson said he plans to implement the program across the nation, and has already started in North Carolina. While Bloom Community initiated

the program at Texana, the overall goal is to have Texana take over the program so Watson can share, with other centers and organizations, the Bloom Community mission.

“We are building a program that can be duplicated in any community,” Watson said, adding that he developed a 30-page manual for the program. “And we are in the process of taking this program across the country because there is a great need for it.”

“John and Bloom Cycle has helped Texana Center expand our vision of the opportunities that are available to individuals with IDD within our community,” Barker said. “With the right mix of passion and partnership, there are no limits to the opportunities we can create for individuals with IDD in our community.”

E arly in the 20th century, mothers, motherhood as well as maternal bonds were celebrated in the United States thanks to Anna Marie Jarvis,

who in 1908 celebrated the first Mother ’s Day holiday by holding a memorial for her mother a t St . Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

It wasn’t until 1911 that the US Congress officially observed Mother’s Day and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day as a national

holiday to honor mothers. It is always held on the second Sunday of

May. As Jarvis, who remained unmarried and childless

her whole life, grew older, however, she was repulsed by the intense commercialization of the holiday and even resulted to organized boycotts of Mother’s Day.

She passionately stressed that the holiday was supposed to be one of sentiment, not profit and spent the latter part of her life trying to dissolve her creation.

While her efforts did not work on a large scale, we recognize the value in Jarvis’ efforts — trying to

removed the commercialization out of Mother’s Day — so we have created a special section for the mothers out there.

Stefanie Bartlett Pradia: I have two children: my daughter Jessica is 20 years old and my son, Jayden, is 13 years old.

Q: How would you describe your childrens’ personalities (Bragging time).

SBP: My daughter Jessica is an amazing young woman. Growing up she played sports, was a cheerleader and competed in cheer competitions as well. She’s like me and always puts her best foot forward and can tackle any task given to her. After graduating high school, she decided to study a business degree. She’s outgoing and headstrong. Once she puts her mind to something, she makes it happen. To only be 20 years old, she is extremely focused Stefanie and her husband Patrick. and

dedicated to making a life she wants for herself. She is my hero!

My son Jayden is my hero, too. He’s active in football at school and riding our horses. To be 13 years old, he is also extremely focused. He told me he wants to work for the railroad industry and he always puts his best foot forward, too. He amazes me every single day. My children make me laugh every day and I can’t imagine my life without them. They’re beyond amazing.

Q: What does being a mother mean to you?

SBP: Loving my children more then anything in the world. Being their biggest fans, supporting their every move, lifting them up when the world has tried to bring them down and making memories that will last a lifetime. I strive to bring smiles to their faces, teach them to make the best decision for themselves and not always what they may believe I want for them.

I guide them, and am a friend when they need one. Being a mother is the BEST thing in

the world for me. My children are my world

and there is honestly nothing in this world that is better then having my two kiddos by my side.

Q: What excites you about being a mother?

SBP: I love to see them grow and make decisions, I love to see them happy and smiling. I love to hear their laughter; I love the noise; I love the conversations ,short and long. I love the fact that they can come to me and talk about anything. I love how they know in their hearts I am here for them no matter what. I love to see them get excited, I love to see them dance and hang out together and love how they are so close. I love that they have each other and would do anything for each other.

Q: The best part about being a mother? SBP: The joy my heart gets to just see them

sleep, or to just have them simply hug me tight and run in and tell me they love me. I love the fact that they believe I am the best mom in the whole wide world! As we all know, there was no book written for parents, but to them, I hung the moon and stars. They come to me when they want to talk, or cry, or simply to just be there. They are amazing and I

thank God for them every day.

Q: What scares you as a mother? SBP: I am the biggest worrier, and they would

agree. I worry when Jessica is out driving and facing the world. I worry when she is traveling with friends. I worry when Jayden is ridding his horses, or on the field playing football. I worry about him getting ready to drive ... I think the worry is always there, but it just changes with time. When

they are little we do not want them to get hurt or fall and break something. But as they get older we worry about a simple drive to the store, and the current online scares. Like I said as a mother, I worry no matter what, but I believe that is also what makes me a good mother. I love them so much and want to protect them forever like any good mother or parent would.

Q: What is the toughest part about being a mother?

SBP: The toughest part is saying “No.” I hate to see my kids hearts sink becase they are not able to go some where or do something because of something they may have done. I hate to see them disappointed. I hate to see then cry and be in pain. I remember when my daughter cut her thumb and had to get stitches I think she did better with those stitches than I did (laughs). I hated to see my son laying in a hospital bed for a week becase he had an accident on one of his horses. He got back on her and shook it off. I tell you, he handled it better them me! They are truly my soldiers.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory, thus far, as a mom?

SBP: I have several: The first one start with the day I had them. I never knew a love could be so

great until I had them. We make every moment last, we cherish our time together no matter what. It can be a trip to the mall, or the barn or to a gathering. They always make me laugh, so when someone asks me what is my favorite memory…… It is always THEM! They are my every thought, memory and I am honored to have them.

Q: Do you find yourself repeating things your own parents told you? If so, how do you feel about that?:

SBP: Not really, only a few times I think I have heard myself say something that was told to me when I was a child. But for the most part I am my own person and my relationship with my kids is totally different than the one I had with my parents.

Q: Favorite Mother’s Day memory? SBP: To pick just one would be hard. I love

every Mother’s Day. My children make every day special.

Q: The best Mother’s Day gift you have ever received?

SBP: A long tight group hug! And the simple “I love you more mom!“

Q: Any advice for new, soon-to-be mothers?

SBP: Cherish every moment, They grow so fast. We get so busy trying to make a life that we forget what’s most important. It is not what you have in your life, it’s the people that are there in it with you. Life is about stages and if you lose focus on what truly matters, you will lose on the stages of togetherness.



Q: How many children do you have?

Marquita Griffin: I have two sons. Mason is 4 years old and Maddox is 2 years old.

Q: How would you describe your childrens’ personalities (Bragging time).

MG: Wild. Absolutely wild. That book “Where the Wild Things Are,”

yeah they live at my house. But they are as equally sweet, curious and headstrong, which I consider a perfect combination of my husband and myself.

Q: What does being a mother mean to you?

MG: I think first and foremost a balance between being a protector and guide in this life. I’m still pretty

new at motherhood, and have much to learn in the coming years, but I feel right now I’m mostly a protector — of hurt feelings, falls, stomach aches, bug bites and whatnot. I’m also a safe haven and in my arms my boys feel safe, as they should. I know, however, that will change. So I guess to be a mother also means you have to be extremely adaptable.

In a few years, their eyes will open to more beauty and tragedies of this world, and it will be my job to help them appreciate and navigate them all.

Q: What excites you about being a mother?

MG: Using my mother as an example — and she is a wonderful example — I relish being their teacher. The woman who, along with their father, will instill solid beliefs, values and morals within them that they can use as adults. I’m excited about those teaching moments. The times when I can show them how to step back and see how amazing life is and the potential each of them has.

While I will always have an unconditionally fierce love for them, I know there will be times I will have to say “No,” and will upset them and consequently they won’t like me all that much (laughs) but I hope that when they become adults they will truly see the reasons behind my methods and appreciate them. And that, I hope, is when we become more than mother and son, but friend and friend. Which honestly I really look forward to.

Q: The best part about being a mother?

MG: The hugs, smiles and their attempts at making me laugh. I enjoy their individual quirks and watching them grow up, even though, I do get a little sad at how fast the are growing. It doesn’t take much for me to remember that sweet baby smell they had when they were infants.

Q: What scares you as a mother?

MG: Not to be morbid, but leaving this earth too early; leaving before I’ve had the chance to help them unders tand the s tark and

disappointing truths they will come across in life and being able to savor the great times with them.

On a lighter note, I’m scared I’ll do this whole mothering thing wrong and they end up in therapy complaining about me.

Q: What is the toughest part about being a mother?

MG: That’s simple: There are not enough hours in the day to do exactly what I want with them. I would love to spend all day exploring, playing and reading with them, but adulthood doesn’t really supply that kind of time for me. So the toughest part are those days where I feel I didn’t give them enough of me.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory, thus far, as a mom?

MG: No.1 would definitely be their births. The moment I first saw them I fell in love so deep and so hard it was terrifying ... and

sublime all at the same time. What’s strange is I was afraid I wouldn’t feel that way with Maddox, with him being the second born (you know that whole been-there-done-that) but I was thrilled to be proven wrong.

No. 2 would be when my husband held them for the first time. My man is not a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve, but when he held his sons he absolutely melted. Even now, even when they’re bugging him to the brink of insanity, he lets his “teddy bear” side out, and only with them. Seeing all three of them together, is like bliss in a box.

Q: Do you find yourself repeating things your own parents told you? If so, how do you feel about that?:

MG: All. The. Time. I can even mimic the pitch and tone my mom used with me. And I find it kind of funny, especially when she points it

out.

Q: Favorite Mother’s Day memory?

MG: To be honest, Mother’s Day is just another day for me. All my days kind of blur together (laughs) and as long as my family is healthy and untroubled, I’m a happy woman.

Q: The best Mother’s Day gift you have ever received?

MG: When my husband decided we should take a trip to North Carolina to visit his mom and stepdad when Mason was not even a year old. The mountain air, being surrounded by family and that amazing chocolate pound cake my mother-in-law made, was the perfect recipe for a fond memory.

Q: Any advice for new, soon-

to-be mothers? MG: Kiss and hug your child

(children) as often as you can. They get independent really fast. Take lots and lots of photos and videos. It’s nice to take a trip down memory lane and you’ll find that a photo will spark a memory you hadn’t thought about in a long time.

I will also stress that while being a mother will consume most of your life, don’t forget the individual woman you are. It’s easy to get lost in the responsibilities and joys of motherhood and forget who you were before you become a mother. Don’t ever forget that you existed before your children. My boys are my world, they truly are, but I remind myself that I am more than just Mason and Maddox’s mom, and I think that’s important because when they’re men and I have long left this place, I want them remember all of me, not just their mother, but as Marquita as well.

A mother has “A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair” and has three pair of eyes.

“One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ’What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, ‘I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.”

Our experiences with our mothers are all quite different, but at the same time, are often similar. With that in mind we asked some local children to submit their own Mother’s Day

the table at 5:30. I never stopped to wonder about the creative birthday parties that left the neighborhood children envious for next year. I never considered our clean house, ironed clothes or well-stocked refrigerator.

I didn’t think about the millions of details my mom provided us with until June 9, 2007… the moment I became a mother myself.

Suddenly all those “little things” became too much. How could I feed my family when I barely remembered to brush my teeth that morning? How could I plan a party when my carpet was stained from the thrown up green beans? How could I press my husband’s shirt when I couldn’t even find the iron inside the mess of a closet?

How could I ever live up to becoming the mother I had?

I struggled. I tried. I cried.Years… and another, wilder child

later…. I found my answer. There was no way to be my

mother. If I made it a competition, I knew I would lose every time.

So I started to relax a bit more. I didn’t get angry at myself when we ordered pizza on Tuesday, or Wednesday, or Thursday night.

I didn’t scoff when my son wanted to have the same birthday party he had last year. I had my husband go buy a new iron (for himself to use!).

I learned to pick my fights with others, but most importantly, with myself.

On Valentine’s Day, my grandmother passed away, my mom’s mom. At the funeral, I heard so many people remark about how lucky they were to have such a special lady in their life. They mentioned my grandma’s tenacity, and famous cinnamon apples, and crocheted blankets and generous spirit.

“A Remarkable Woman”

It was May 15, 1933 when I met the most remarkable, warm-hearted and talented woman who would ever enter my life. Her name: Wynne Wranosky Keeble. It was a beautiful, breezy, balmy day that May 15, when this wonderful woman gave birth to one lucky baby ... me.

For the next 51 years, I had the

great privilege of being the third daughter of this special lady. An accomplished artist and musician, she kept out little home very tidy and filled with happy music and gorgeous pieces of art.

She loved life, God, my dad, her children, nature’s beauty, kindness, good manners and graciousness. And, always, a good laugh.

She tried to pass these traits on to her children, and did so with somewhat success.

She’s been gone now for over 30 years. Do I miss her? Only her good counsel, positive attitude, contagious laughter, happy smile, warm hugs, sweet kisses and endless love.

So ... do I miss her?Only with every fiber of my body,

every cell in my mind, and every beat of my heart.

“I think she enjoyed it”

When I was younger, my mom gave me a cutting of an Erma Bombeck column all about a mother’s love.

It said things like: your mother loves you enough to tell you no when you need it; your mother loves you enough to let you go on a trip over her birthday or Mother’s Day ... it was a column about all the sacrifices mothers make for the benefit of their children.

It was a column I did not fully

appreciate in my young age. At that point in my life, the last thing I wanted to be or resemble was my mother.

Now, as a 32 year old woman, thinking about all the memories between that time and now brings tears to my eyes. I think of how close we have become, all we have in common, all the time we spend together, and how I am forever grateful she is my best friend.

I think of the times when she probably wanted to kill me, the times I scared her, disappointed her, and most of all, felt like I failed her.

Through it all, my mom never gave up on me, and only loved me more.

On one of our mother-daughter outings recently, Mom shared a very fitting Mark Twain quote with me: “My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.”

Step-By-Step Process1. Paint the canvas white. 2. Take photos of your subject(s) in

profile. 3. Use Photoshop or any poto-

editing program to re-size the photos to fit the canvas.

4. Print the photos on regular paper5. Trace a “cut-line” around the

profile with a Sharpie.6. Cut along the black lineThen use the templates made from

the photos to trace onto the back of a vinyl sheet.

Next, simply stick the vinyl cut-out to the center of the canvas. Paint over it with your desired paint color and a foam brush (or a foam roller, if you don’t like brush-strokes). Two or three coats of paint may be necessary. After the paint dries, remove the vinyl and your silhouette is done!

Silhouette machine to cut out a decorative square in black vinyl. There were some gaps in her vinyl, so she filled them with painter’s tape. If you don’t own a Silhouette, you could create a square using painter’s

tape and decorative edge scissors. Paint the outside of the jar and immediately remove your sticker. You do not want to wait until the paint is dry or else it will be difficult to remove your sticker.

2. Cut a picture to size and attach to jar with painter’s tape.

This blogger sized my pictures in a Word document and then just printed them off on her laser printer. The painter’s tape allows you to easily change out the picture.

3. “Distress” the lettering on the jar.

This is an optional step. This blogger liked the look of the lettering and pictures on mason jars and wanted it to show more clearly. She took a metal file and scraped off the paint where I wanted the lettering to show.

4. Seal the outside of the painted jar with clear spray paint.

The paint will easily scrape off of the jar if it is not sealed. To add durability to the paint, spray it with a clear spray paint.

5. Place paper cup inside jar to hold flowers.

Your picture will be ruined if you fill the inside of the jar with water. Place a paper cup inside the jar, fill the cup with water, and place your flowers in the cup. This blogger used a foam cup and had to cut off the lip of the cup in order for it to fit but it worked great. Alternatively, you can place an LED candle inside the jar for a different effect!.

#3 Fabric covered books

Supply List:• Notebooks• Self adhesive fabric• Fabric tape• Scissors

And if you like – some decorative ribbons. In this case you also need some glue.

Step-By-Step Process

1.Measure your book and cut two pieces of adhesive fabric that are a bit bigger than the notebook. One piece for the front and one for the back of the book. Remove the protective paper and place the fabric on top of the book, the sticky side down.

2. To get pretty corners is easiest to fold the corners first.

3. Proceed to fold along the sides. 4. Cut fabric tape in proper length,

remove the backing paper and cover the spine.

5. If you like you can decorate with additional tape along the spine.

6. Finish off by decorating my books with a small piece of fabric ribbon with the text home-made, which can be glued to the back of the book.

NOTE: Of course it doesn’t have to be self-adhesive fabric, you could

use plain fabric and glue as well. The blogger also used pre-cut fabric squares which fitted my 5.5 inch notebook perfectly. She dressed the edges and the spine with fabric tape and cut out the letter H from a piece of adhesive fabric.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON SUGAR LAND“Virtual Dementia”

More than 80 University of Houston College of Nursing students participated in a powerful experience to help them better understand patients with dementia.

The “Virtual Dementia” demonstration outfitted the students in glasses that simulate macular degeneration, headphones that played white noise to simulate hearing loss, thick gloves to simulate tactile challenges and uncomfortable shoe inserts to simulate neuropathy.

They then were given five minutes to complete simple tasks, like set a table, fold towels, find a shirt and put it on. The students—all from the College’s Second Degree BSN program—found the tasks very challenging, and some could not complete them.

Many of these students will become health care professionals for the elderly and said the experience gave them valuable perspective on how better to care for patients with dementia.
