We are once again in the month of September and as the old Filipino

saying goes “kapag BER namalapit na ang Pasko”. It is a common belief among Filipinos that the month of September initiates the Christmas season, the time wherein we celebrate the nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. But before we celebrate the birth of Our Lord, we should celebrate first the Nativity of her mother this 8th

of September. In fact, this month of September, we celebrate not only one but three feast days in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. First, her nativity on the 8th; second, the holy name of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the 12th; lastly, Our Lady of Sorrows on the 15th.

With so many celebrations in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary not only in one month but spread throughout the year,

shouldn’t we wonder why Mary is so special for us Catholics? It is my intention then to share with you why Mary is special for us.

Her StoryAccording to Church tradition, Mary’s

parents were Joachim and Ann. She was descended through the line of David from the tribe of Judah.

Chronologically, St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians was one of the first books of the New Testament to be written, and it is here that, for the first time, Mary is mentioned in the New Testament. (cf. Gal. 4:4-5).

VATICAN, September 4, 2016 - at exactly 4:15 PM (Philippine time), the rites for a canonization started in front of the thousands of pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square and with the declaration of his Holy Father Pope Francis, “For the honor of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother Bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a Saint,”

“We enroll her among the Saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

NEWSBITS

Ina ng mga Dukha Parish Bulletin

The bulk of the information we have regarding Mary is in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Mary lived in Nazareth in Galilee, and it is in the Gospel of Luke that the angel Gabriel appears to her and asks her to accept being mother of the Messiah.

She was betrothed to Joseph, but according to custom, they were not yet living as man and wife.

Mary expresses her willingness to accept the role the Holy Spirit has set out for her with complete humility and submission. From the point of her acceptance of the role the Holy Spirit has chosen for her, she is joined in a mysterious manner to the work of her Son. Her “yes” to God makes up for the refusal of Eve to serve God, and from this point she is entitled to be called “the new Eve”. From all eternity God had planned that the salvation of man be joined to the cooperation of Mary in accepting her role as mother of the Messiah.

Mary appears in the Gospels in the service of Jesus from the Incarnation to the crucifixion and finally in prayer in the upper room after the Resurrection.

Her most difficult moment occurred at Jesus’ crucifixion, when she stood at the foot of the cross as an example for us of fortitude in this life in the midst of sorrow and suffering.

After the completion of her earthly life, Jesus raised Mary body and soul into his presence in Heaven to enjoy the rewards she so richly deserved. Pius XII proclaimed her Assumption into heaven as a dogma of the Church on November 1, 1950.

Being ModelIn today’s world, many people prefer fame and

fortune than to serve our Lord and his Church, in contrast to Mary who never sought anything for herself.

One who reads the Gospel could easily notice

that Mary speaks only twice in the New Testament: this reminds us that her life was one of deeds. Her life was one of service to her family where she sought to find the will of God. Her life was not easy, but Mary did the chores associated with motherhood with humility and grace. She sought neither fame nor riches but only wished to do the will of her son. Her example points to the fact that personal sanctity can be found in every life that is lived as a life of service to others. Fame and fortune may come, but all are called to fulfill their everyday duties without regard to life’s merely human rewards.

Because of her life and cooperation with the special graces of God. Mary is entitled to special veneration. This honor is less than the honor offered to God but is greater than that which should be offered to any other human person.

The human perfection of the Blessed Virgin Mary should motive everyone to imitation of her. It is true that no human being can duplicate her perfection, but that should not permit us to forget that everyone can imitate her virtue to a great extent through cooperation with God’s grace.

Mary still cares for us with maternal charity, so she will intercede with her Son to aid us in the quest for perfection through his manifold graces. As the good mother she is, she awaits our calls for her assistance and brings them personally to her beloved Son.
