    C h a p t e r 1IN TR OD U C TIONThe PCI P54C TR6 system board is a high-performance personalcom puter system board based on a 3.3 V version of the Pentiummicroprocessor the P54 microprocessor. The system boardsupports the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Local Busstandard and provides three 32-bit PCI bus master slots.The system board uses the highly integrated Intel 82430VX Chipsetto support the PCI / ISA and Green standards, and to provide theHost / PCI bridge. The 8243OVX chip set integrates all systemcontrol functions.

    2.2 Memory InstallationMemory Bank Configurat ionThe system board supports a max imum of 128M of mem ory, andprovides four 72-pin SIM Ms (Single In-line Mem ory Module) andone 168-pin DIM M sockets. Each bank supports 4M, 8M, 16M,and 32M . That is, 2M Band 16MB is theminimum and maximumfor one 72-pin singleside memory module.And 4MB and 32MB isthe minimum andmaximum for one 72-pin single side memorymodule. This boardsupports 4 RAS.     Note 3:To operate properly at least two 72-pin SIMM modulemust be installed in the same bank or the one 168-pinDIMM module must be installed. The system cannotoperate with only one 72-pin SIMM module installed.

    Note 4: Only 3.3 V SIMM memory should be installed at thesame time as DIMM memory. Otherwise don't installSIMM memory an d DIMM memory at the same time.Doing so could damage your system.

    Note 5: The DIMM bank supports 3.3 V EDO, 3.3 V FP, a nd,unbuffered 3.3VSDRAM . Be sure to adust the J 18, J19,J20 jumpers to the 3.3Vposition before installingDIMM memory.Below, describes J 18, J 19, J20 jumpersettings for the 3.3V and 5V selections.

    Choose Enabled or Disabled. Enabledhas the Auto-detect function of thisBIOS detect the existence of the PS/2mou se. If the PS/2 mouse is installedthen IRQ 12 will l be assign ed to it. If thePS/2 mouse isn't installed the IRQ 12 willbe released to another card. TheDisabled setting has IRQ 12 alwaysassigned to another card.Choose Absent or Present.     Security Option Choose "Sy stem " to prevent unauthorizedsystem boot-up or choose "Setup" toprevent unauthorized use of BIOS Setup.

    PCI VG A Palette Choose Disabled or Enabled, some graphicSnooping controllers, which are not VGA

    compatible, take the output from a VGAcontroller and map it to their display as away to provide the boot information andthe VGA compatibility.However, the color informationcoming fro m the VG A controller isdrawn from the palette table insidethe VGA controller. In order for thegraphic controller to generate theproper colors, the graphic controllerneeds to know what is in the paletteof the VGA controller. To do this, thenon-VGA graphic controller watchesfor Write access to the VGA palette registers and snoops the data.     4.10 Supervisor/User Password SettingThis setting lets you configure the system so that a password isrequired each time the system boots or an attemp is made to enterthe Setup program. Supervisor Password allows you to change allCMOS settings but the User Password setting doesn't have thisfunction if you have set the Supervisor Password. The method forsetting up the password is as follow s:1. Choose "Supervisor Password" or "User Password" in the Main

    Menu and press . the following message appears:"ENTER PASSWORD:"

    2. The first time you run this option, enter a password up to 8characters and press . The screen does not dispaly theentered characters. For no password press .

    3. After entering the password, the following message appearsprompting the user to confirm the password:"Confirm Password:"

    4. Enter the same password you previously typed to confirm thepassword and press .

    5. Move the cursor to Save & Exit Setup to save the password.6. If you need to delete the previously entered password, choose the

    Password and press . It will delete the previouspassword.

    4.11 IDE HDD Auto DetectionYou can use this utility to automatically detect most hard drives.When you enter this utility, the screen asks you to select a specifichard disk for Prim ary M aster. If yo u accept a hard disk detected bythe BIOS, you can enter "Y" to confirm and then press tocheck the next hard disk. This function allows you to check fourhard disks and you ma y press the after the to skipthis function and go back to the Main Menu.
