MOTHERS’CLUBENRICHMENT SCHOLARSHIPS PRESERVATION

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEPRESIDENT’S MESSAGEPRESIDENT’S MESSAGEHappy Fall to All!

By now hopefully the South community has gotten back into the swing of school! This time of year isalways exciting to me with activities and events gearing up again as the weather cools down. We at theMothers’Club have been busy all summer and September in preparation for the 2009-10 school year.

The Principals’Mailing was smooth and efficient thanks to our many volunteers. Tudi Harwoodskillfully guided the process, once again. Our new mailing chairs Peggy Shine and Trisha Cozad keptthings running smoothly. Thanks also to last year’s chairs Pamela Flom and Betsy Mogk who helpedwith the bulk mail procedure— always a tricky task.

Registration was a success, as well. Membership chair Mary Ellen Brayton had a great crew in place tocollect our membership and volunteer forms. Directory chairs Ann Ottenhoff, Chris Parcells, andAllison Kuhnlein also helped gather forms. If you haven’t joined the Mothers’Club yet, it’s not toolate. Every donation goes toward our mission of supporting the students, teachers, and administrationhere at South. There’s a form in this issue of High Pointes and on the web site.

Volunteer chairs Dana Kaiser and Shelley Reisen have been busy compiling lists of volunteers for allour advisory board committees. The response has been terrific and committee chairs can expect theirlists of volunteers from them soon. If you haven’t signed up yet, check out our web site where you canprint off the volunteer form and send it in.

This year we inaugurated a Mothers’Club reception right before freshman parent orientation. It was atremendous success! We offered mini-tours of the school (led by our fantastic National HonorsSociety students), talked about volunteer opportunities, and sold quite a bit of South spirit wear. Thanks to Polly Tech for pulling together the tours, Jackie Szymanski and Kathie Harness fororganizing and selling the spirit wear, and Kathie and Cindie Casazza for providing deliciousrefreshments.

Homecoming is fast approaching. Students, faculty sponsors and parent class sponsors have been hardat work on floats, banners, and posters. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our veteran Homecomingchairs Roxanne Flaska and Sara Declerq for disbursing the supplies. Thanks also to the parentsponsors who have been donating time, talent, and driveway space since August. Spirit Week startsOctober 12 and culminates in the game on October 16 and the dance on October 17. Make sure youstop by school that week to see the incredible energy and creativity of our students.

Last but not least is perhaps our biggest news this month: the Student Commons and new location forthe school store. Vice President for Preservation Debbie Fisher and her crew, especially KelieMcMillan, Cheryl DeLaura, Mary Ann Bury, and Wendy Schmidt, worked countless (and I meancountless!) hours this summer to assist in getting the Commons in great shape. They consulted on theflooring, furniture, sconces, and fabulous photo-murals that show off 80 years of student life at South.

The opening of the Student Commons included a new location for the Mothers’Club school store, right next door. This will be a very convenient location for students to stop in and purchase their drinksand snacks— with every penny we make going right back to our school and our kids. Spirit wear andother items are also for sale in the new store. Thanks to Jackie Szymanski, Betsy Mogk, KathieHarness, Debbie Fisher, and Pamela Flom for getting ready for the grand opening.

Our next meeting is October 13 at 9 a.m. in Cleminson Hall. I hope you can join us!

LIBRARY NEWS: At the beginning of the term avolunteer library staff was formed… In this group thereare eleven members from the Senior High School. Theorganization of the new library makes a student staff notonly an asset, but a necessity, as it is of assistance in theroutine work. For instance, the work at the circulation

desk is entirely carried on by members of the staff, whoare on duty at various

periods in the day. Already student help has been enlistedin the reading of the shelves, care of magazines and

bulletin boards, and in the preparation of books for theshelves. It has been discovered that among the numberwe have an excellent typist, and two girls with artistic

talent, who are good at lettering.

Fascinated with the history of Grosse Pointe South andinterested in preserving its historic integrity?
