The Nature of EnergyMotion, Force & Energy

Chapter 5.1Pages 140-145

What is Energy?

• Energy is the ability to do Work or cause a change–Measured in Joules, like Work

Kinetic Energy

• Kinetic Energy is the energy of motion

• All moving objects have Kinetic Energy (KE )

• What determines an object’s KE?– Mass & Velocity

determine the KE of an object.

Potential Energy

• Potential Energy (PE ) is stored energy– It has the potential or

“possibility” to do work

• Gravitational PE is energy that depends on height

• Elastic PE is for objects that can be stretched.

Mechanical Energy• Energy associated with

motion (KE & PE)

Thermal Energy• Energy of particles in an object

Chemical Energy• Energy stored in chemical bonds

Electrical Energy•Moving electric charges

Electromagnetic Energy•Waves of energy, such as light

Nuclear Energy•The fusion or fission of atoms

Which of the following is an example of Kinetic Energy?

•Compacted spring

A

•Boulder atop a mountain

B

•Boulder rolling down a mtn.

C

•Bike at the top of half pipe

D

A bow string that is pulled back and ready to fire is…

•Gravitational PE

A

•Elastic PE

B

•Rubber KE

C

•Elastic KE

D

Exit PassWhat is the difference between Kinetic and Potential energy?

Give an example of each.
