MOTOR LEAD TO DOWN HOLE CABLE SPLICE PROCEDURE
REMINDERS• Before making the first splice, note the motor phase rotation. The rotation of the
motor should be counterclockwise when looking at the shaft end of the motor. Franklin CBM and CBM+ motors come with an orange jacketed lead. Other motors may come with the high pressure lead. The photos below show each motor lead and a phase to drive guideline to follow when splicing the motor lead to the down hole cable.
• Ensure leads and cable jackets are clean and free of grease, oil, and any foreign substances. Use provided cleaning wipes prior to applying tapes to the splice.

Cable & MLE Splicing Procedures1. Assemble equipment as per the supplied procedures.2. Space out the motor leads at least two feet above the top of the pump or shroud so
the splice is above the first pipe connection. 3. DO NOT shorten the length of the motor lead. This can result in the motor lead
being too short if a second splice is needed.4. Put the motor lead in a splice cable.5. Peel back the armor or jacket of the drop cable and motor lead (if jacketed) 16
inches. After the removal of the armor, place a couple of wraps of Hi Mod at the end of the armor or jacket covering any sharp edges. This prevents the armor from damaging the cable when the leads are spread apart.
6. If the leads and/or cable is bent more than 90 degrees, it must be cut out and spliced again.

Stagger the leads as shown in the image below, trimmed as in the previous image.

Using the dimple in the middle of the butt connector, measure the length of insulation to be cut back to expose the bare copper wire that will be inserted inside the butt connector. Be careful to avoid leaving any exposed bare strands outside of the butt connector.
Crimp the sleeves on the prepared cable using suitable crimpers. Proceed as follows:• Insert the cable into the butt connection and crimp into place. Pull on the connection to
check for a sound mechanical connection. • Trim the motor lead so it will meet the cable lead inside the sleeve.• Strip the insulation of the motor lead to expose the bare copper wire to the depth of the
sleeve hole.• Insert the motor lead to full depth into the cable butt connector and crimp, connecting the
two leads together.• Pull on each end firmly to ensure a tight crimp.

Below are the tapes you will be using to secure your splice.

Step 1Apply seven layers, half lapped, of Hi temp FEP tape (clear). Extend beyond the previous layer by 1 ½ tape widths for each layer. Twist the tape to fill in any gaps between the cable and butt connector on the first layer. Be sure to firmly stretch the tape as you are wrapping each layer. (Pictured below). Tape width will decrease by approximately 1/4 width when properly stretched.

Be sure to slightly stretch the High Mod tape when wrapping. The High Mod tape will change from brown to white in color when stretched

Step 2Apply 2 layers, half lapped, of High Mod PTFE tape (dark tape). Start the first layer one tape width beyond the clear tape. Each layer should extend 1 ½ tape widths past the previous layer. Stretch the tape as you wrap it. This tape will turn almost white in color when properly stretched.
Step 3Cover the High Mod with two layers of clear High Temp tape to prevent it from coming loose.
After all three legs and ground are individually spliced, pull them together and wrap them together with two layers of fiberglass tape. The fiberglass tape should go up on the jacket of the cable three Inches, and cover three inches of the motor lead.
Keeping the wires in a flat arrangement minimizes the radial projection beyond the pump and tubing. Avoiding overlapping wires will help prevent damage during installation.
Start one tape width behind the fiberglass tape with Super 88 electrical tape and wrap one layer over the fiberglass.
Carefully pull the cable to make the splice flat on the plumbing. Using green tape (2" MILSPEC pipe tape) secure the splice to the plumbing.
