Basic Rider Course (BRC) (MVA265)

This 17–hour course is designed for the true beginning rider who haslittle or no riding experience. It includes classroom and riding instructionon the basic riding skills and strategies necessary for an individual tobegin to practice street riding. Courses are taught by Motor VehicleAdministration and Motorcycle Safety Foundation certified instructors.You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course.

During the seven hours of classroom activities, you will discuss topicsthat include responsible riding, selecting proper riding gear and the basicriding skills. Other topics include defensive riding strategies and how tohandle a variety of riding situations. You will receive approximately 10-hours of riding on a training motorcycle practicing clutch-throttlecontrol, stopping, turning, shifting and basic crash avoidance skills.Throughout the course the instructors evaluate and coach each rider’sperformance. (Participants who do not achieve the minimumperformance standards will not be allowed to continue in the course.) Tocomplete the course, you must pass a knowledge and skill testadministered at the end of the course and complete a pre-course andhomework assignment. Riders who pass will receive a MarylandMotorcycle Safety Program Completion Card. There is no guarantee thatan individual enrolling in this course will pass, or get their license.

This course is approved by the Motor Vehicle Administration for theClass M licensing waiver. Participants who meet the testing standards forlicensing will be eligible to receive their Class M license. While amotorcycle learners permit is NOT required to take the course, it isadvised as a cost saving measure. (The MD motorcycle learner’s permitfee is $30 while the renewal licensing fee without the permit is currently$72.) All Motorcycle Rider Education Classes begin in the GM Room inthe Welding/Auto Building.

Please Note:J Riding a motorcycle requires physical strength, excellentbalance, flexibility, coordination, and concentration.Make sure you are prepared and ready to ride safely!

J Because each State may have differing licensing requirements, if your driver's license was issued in a Stateother than Maryland it is your responsibility to verify thatour Maryland State Approved Courses meet your state'srequirements to receive your motorcycle license.

DIRECTIONS TO Allegany College of Maryland

• From the Washington/Baltimore areas, take I-70 or I-270 to Frederick and go west past Hagerstown andHancock. Just west of Hancock, take I-68 west toCumberland and proceed about 35 miles to exit 44,Willowbrook Road. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp andgo about one mile to Allegany College of Maryland on theleft. Please allow 2½ – 3 hours travel time.

• From the west, take I-68 east toward Cumberland. Take exit 44, Willowbrook Road and go right at the bottom ofthe ramp. Travel one mile to the campus and followWashington directions to the class.
