The latest figures from theMotorcheck.ie car indexshow new car sales downfor the fifth successivemonth in a row. Thefigures which includeregistrations up to June28th of this year show thismonth as being the worstthis year with a drop ofsales currently running inexcess of 43%.

hree well known German brands are certainly going to have to lookto their laurels, if they wish to be considered Europe’s premiumbrands. This Peugeot 508 SW challenges them all the way andmatches the best they have to offer in every respect.
The test car was fitted with Peugeot’s twolitre, turbocharged, direct injection, dieselengine, delivering a power output of 120 kWwith 340 Nm of torque. It is linked to a silkysmooth, six speed automatic/manual gearbox,which makes driving absolutely effortless,especially in city and suburban drivingconditions. Although it is a big, spacious andcomfortable car, it still provides an excellentand effortless performance. Potential topspeed is 223 kph (138 mph) with 0-100 kphacceleration in 9.5 seconds. While itsperformance is very much on the sportingside, its fuel consumption is very satisfactoryfor a car of this size and performance. By EUtesting standards, Urban cycle consumption is37 mpg (7.6 lt/100 km) with an amazing 61mpg (4.6 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle.
This gives a Combined cycle average of 49mpg (5.7 lt/100 km). Exhaust emissions are150 gm/km, so this model falls into Irish roadtax band C with a current annual charge of€330.
Although it is a diesel, the engine isabsolutely quiet and silky smooth in operation.The only time it gets a little bit audible, is whenyou accelerate away from rest in an urgentway and as the revs rise to their upper limitsyou can hear the engine in a subdued manner.This silky smooth performance of the engine,is matched by the automatic gearbox. In factonce you have moved off from rest, you canforget about gear changing all together, untilyou need to reverse, or turn the engine off. It iscompletely relaxing and absolutely effortless.

Of course if you want to playat being a Formula One driver,you can make the changesmanually, by flicking the twopaddles under the steeringwheel. Matching the effortlessnature of the drivingexperience, the electro-hydraulic power assistedsteering is geared to give 2.8turns from lock to lock. Theservo assisted braking systemcomes with modern dayessentials like anti-lock,electronic brakeforcedistribution and emergencybrake assist, while theelectronic stability programmeincludes traction control, hillstart assist and dynamicstability control. It all goes tomake the 508 SW anabsolutely relaxing and asheer pleasure to drive.
In spite of our pathetic roadsurfaces, the suspension givesa smooth and comfortableride. The roadholding is good,so driving along a twistingroad is no problem at all. Thebrakes are smooth andpositive, whenever you needthem. One of the features Iparticularly liked, was thelarge glass panoramic roof,which makes the interiorbright and cheerful, in spite ofthe dark coloured upholstery.
The instruments are clearand easy to see whilst driving.The instrument binnaclecontains two large roundanalogue instruments andthree smaller ones. All havewhite lettering on a black
larger closed storage box, witha padded top. The front seatshave electric adjustments forreach, height, backrest angle,lumbar support and cushiontilt.
The rear bench seat isdivided 60/40 in the foldingbackrest. It has adequatekneeroom for passengers ofnormal size. The two outerpositions are equipped withISOfix fittings for child safetyseats. As in most cars, thecentre section is firmer in boththe cushion and backrest. Thecentre section also houses thefolding centre armrest. Thiscan also be used as a ski-hatch for longer items ofluggage like skis or fishingroads, without resorting tofolding a section of thebackrest onto the seatcushion.
One of the greatadvantages of the stationwagon - estate car - tourer,whatever you prefer to call it,is that it offers a largerluggage space than its saloonand hatchback sisters. In thecase of the 508 SW, it has0.560 cubic meters of usablespace under the roll-up cover,when all five seats are in use.Remove the roller cover, foldthe seat backs onto thecushion and when loading tothe roof you have 1.598 cubicmetres of space, plus the twofront seats for driver andpassenger occupation. The testcar had a large rubber matcovering the carpeted luggage
background with red needlesand highlights. The tachometeris on the left, with thespeedometer on the right.Between the two, at the top ofthe binnacle, under the curvedhood, are the enginetemperature gauge (left), fuellevel gauge (centre) and oiltemperature gauge (right).Under these three, there is adigital information panel,which I particularly liked. Itshows the speed selected forthe cruise control, (left) andgear engaged in the automatictransmission (right). Under thisthere is a section that canshow a variety of informationincluding the road speed inlarge clear figures. I find thisvery assuring and helpful,especially in heavy motorwayand suburban traffic. Thespeedometer dial also has adigital panel that shows thetotal distance and triprecorders.
At the top of the centreconsole, between the two airvents, there is a furtherinformation panel that shows
the time, date and outside airtemperature. Below this panelthere is an aperture for the CDplayer and below this there aretwo switches; one for thehazard flashers and the otherfor the centrallocking/unlocking. The panelbelow that has a range ofcontrols for the audio system.The dual zone climate controlpanel is at the bottom of thestack, ahead of the gearlever.
The driver’s door armresthas controls for the fourelectric windows and for theadjustment of the heated,folding, electrically adjustable,exterior rear view mirrors. Theelectric handbrake and thebutton to start or stop theengine are on the lower side ofthe facia, between the steeringcolumn and the driver’s door.All are conveniently situatedand easy to use whilst driving.There is a small open storagespace on the centre tunnel,between the two front seatswhich is useful for keeping theelectronic key fob whilstdriving. Behind this there is a

The Ford Kuga is designed and built as a passenger carrying SUV. The distributors then have therear seats removed, the rear side and quarter windows removed and panelled with metal and alevel load floor built into the space behind the two front seats. The Kuga thus drives and handleslike any good modern SUV, but it also has a sizeable load bay for carrying goods. Its passengercar origins also mean it has excellent access to the load area, through the two side doors and
the ingenious tailgate. This is divided into two sections. If you are only putting in or taking out small itemsnear the rear of the vehicle, you may prefer to simply open the upper section and reach in, while if youhave larger items to load or unload, you simply open the whole door.

If carrying loads is part ofyour daily requirements, theKuga is a very good option, asit has two very comfortablefront seats, it is a pleasure todrive, with an effortlessperformance, plus excellentride and roadholding. Addedto that is its standard 4x4 off-road abilities. Maximumspeed is 180 kph (111 mph),with 0-100 kph accelerationin a very satisfactory 10.7seconds.

The two exterior rear viewmirrors give a good level ofvisibility down both sides.However, reversing out of alane way, or similar situationonto a road does have a majordifficulty, in that the driver’sview is absolutely nil. The rearview mirrors are no help inthis regard. It is a situationwhere you really needsomebody outside and behindto guide you. This situation isnaturally not confined to theKuga van, as it applies to allpanel vans.
Minor servicing is requiredevery 15,000 km (9,320 miles)or once a year, with a majorservice at twice that interval orevery second year.
