T HE most aerodynamic production car in the world is the claim to fame of the stunning new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. With less drag than even the latest generation fuel efficient hybrids from Toyota and Honda, Mercedes is making a style statement which is as bold as it is contemporary. In silhouette the E-Class Coupe is as pure as they come but with chiselled lines and a pronounced angular bulge over the rear wheels it’s a controversial approach. Head on it looks sensational but from certain aspects the design is complex and can even become confusing. For many a coupe aficionado the jury will be out on whether this is a beauty or a beast. The pillarless side windows, for example, are fully retractable – except for a rear quarter light which spoils the effect. It is there because a single piece of glass would not do the job given the shape of the back of the car which echoes the classic Mercedes’ Ponton of the 1950s. Whether it’s a compromise or a clever fix is irrelevant – it is a distraction. Replacing the CLK in the Mercedes coupe stable which now comprises the CLC, CLS and the luxuriously appointed CL, the E-Class is larger yet keenly priced. At £33,295 for a 3.5-litre V6 petrol model the coupe is around £4,000 cheaper than its saloon counterpart and some 5% less than a similarly powered CLK. The E350 CGI coupe will be joined by a 3.0-litre diesel and 5.4-litre V8 at launch in July costing £35,175 and £48,360. Cheaper E250 diesel and petrol versions will come on stream later in the summer as will an E200 petrol with stop/start technology. All have economy in mind. Even the V8 can average almost 26 miles to the gallon while the diesel E250 can achieve 55.3mpg with emissions down to 135g/km. Putting the V8 aside it is the diesels which are the pick of the crop. The E350 V6 is wonderfully refined, packs a mean punch and will still average more than 40mpg. The four cylinder E250 is noisier but still a fine performer.
