Prestige speedster with a green hue

THERE are some thunderously fastcars in the current Bentley line-upbut all of them retain at least a lit-tle of the brand's trademarkreserve.

Even the Continental GT coupewith its supercar performanceplays things in a more understatedfashion than the alternatives in itspace and price brackets. That'show it used to be anyway, beforethe Continental Supersportsarrived on the scene.

The twin-turbo W12 engine thatpowers the Continental GT devel-ops 552bhp and in theContinental GT Speed, it has600bhp but in the ContinentalSupersports it has been furthertweaked to achieve 621bhp.

The raw figures give someinsight into the sheer pace of theContinental Supersports.

The car can get from a standing

start to 60mph in 3.7 secondsand will be bursting through the100mph barrier in 8.9s. If you putthe hammer down at 50mph,that monstrous torque and thefour-wheel-drive transmission sys-tem will have you at 70mph in2.1s. The top speed is 204mph.

The power of the Supersports is

reflected in its styling but themodifications are not purely forcosmetic reasons: they work toensure the car can make the mostof its performance.

The huge frontal intakes supplythe extra air that the turbocharg-ers need to function properlywhile twin bonnet vents allow hot

air to flow away from the engine. The self-levelling air suspension

system is lower than on the stan-dard models and features stifferbushes while the rear track isextended, necessitating theSupersports' wider rear whee-larches.

Even cars built for the expresspurpose of going indecentlyquickly need to keep half an eyeon their environmental impactthese days or at least be seen tobe doing so.

With this in mind, theSupersports model has beendesigned to run on any mix ofpetrol and E85 Bioethanol.

Because it's produced fromplants which take CO2 out of theatmosphere while growing, bioethanol is carbon neutral andowners using the fuel will takethe edge off the Supersports'hefty combination of 388g/kmCO2 emissions and 17.3mpgeconomy.

Price on the road is £150,000.

CONTINENTALSUPERSPORTS

CLIO III RANGESOMETIMES we all have to bite the bullet.Renault realised that if it was to compete as aglobal player, it needed to invest in newfactories, new cars and new staff.

One of the first fruits of this huge spendingspree was the Clio III. Put baldly, Renault justcould not afford for this car to fall flat on itsface but looking at the vehicle, there wasnever much danger of that.

This latest, facelifted Clio is comfortably big-ger than the old Clio II. Renault have nowbeen able to take a leaf out of GeneralMotors' book and allow the utility models (likethe Modus) to concentrate on family duties, freeing the Clio up – as Vauxhall has donewith its Astra – to be a bit sassier than before.

Therefore, the lines are sharper and sleekerthan the rather bulbous previous two genera-tions and there's greater production emphasison the sportier three-door model, a car whichis expected to account for over 75 per cent ofUK sales.

That's not to say that the Clio II is dead andburied. Budget-priced 'Campus' models are

still offered for sale as entry-level Clio ver-sions. Renault dealers will either have towork very hard with the pricing on thesevariants or segregate their showroomsbecause once buyers clap eyes on the ClioIII, the old car tends to look very old indeed.

At 3.99m long, the Clio III is a full 174mmlonger than its predecessor and despitethose elegant lines, 45mm of extra heighthas been slyly grafted in. The result is a carthat's a far more spacious proposition with-out appearing frumpy or gawky.

Peugeot tried this and failed with the 307and SEAT only just managed it with the Leonbut Renault have worked the compromisebetween space and styling better than both.

The Clio III is offered with a wide array ofpetrol and Euro IV compliant common-raildiesel engines. The petrol engine rangecomprises a 75bhp 1.2-litre, a 100bhp tur-

bocharged 1.2-litre TCE unit, a punchy138bhp 2.0-litre unit and a knockout 2.0-litre 197bhp offering, while the 1.5-litre dCidiesel engine comes in a choice of threepower outputs: 68bhp, 86bhp and 106bhp.

The list of available transmission options forClio III is the same as for Modus and includesa six speed manual on the most powerfuldCi 106. For the first time, a robotised"quick-shift" gearbox commanded by pad-dles located behind the steering wheel is alsoavailable.

Prices start at under £10,000 and the trimlevel range is split between the sporty 3-doorand the practical 5-door cars although buy-ers can also get a Sport Tourer estate.

The 3-door line-up runs from Extreme toRip Curl, Dynamique and Dynamique S whilethe 5-door model is offered in Expression,Rip Curl, Dynamique, Dynamique S or Initialeform. All models get power steering, a tripcomputer, body-coloured bumpers and sidemouldings, remote central locking and aheight adjustable steering wheel.

YARIS

BUY LOCAL Harry Feeney Toyota Devonshire Road, Blackpool Tel 01253 302741

TOYOTA’S second generation Yarissupermini has an inherent rightnessabout it, writes Jonathan Crouch.

At first glance, this isn’t a car you’dput at the top of your superminishopping lists. After all, there areother cars that are more stylish, faster, cheaper or better equipped.

Yet everything about it just doesthe job so effectively.

After a few months, you often getrattly pieces of trim and odd thingsthat stop working as they should.

There’s been nothing like that withthis little Yaris on a long-term test

Here’s a car that still looks and feelsas fresh as it did when it first rolledout of the showroom nearly a yearago.

I chose the diesel, 1.4 D4-D TRmodelm not only because it has somuch more pulling power throughthe gears than its equivalent petrolstablemates but also because I want-ed to see if the up-front premium theD4-D demands could be reclaimed

getting pretty close to Toyota’sclaimed urban fuel consumption fig-ure of 55mpg but in terms of mak-ing back my money, it’s going to berather touch and go.

Still, I can console myself that thiscar is significantly better to drivethan the comparable 1.33-litre petrolmodel. The 89bhp engine is a usefulstep forward from the 74bhp dieselthat powered the previous genera-tion Yaris, with the sprint from 0 to62mph achieved in 10.7 seconds onthe way to a top speed of 109mph.

The main thing is plenty of low-end pulling power to make towndriving a breeze and the steering islight and responsive. Visibility isgood all round, except for the large‘A’ pillars which you have to peeraround on tight bends.

The Yaris manages the normalaspects of a supermini’s existence

just as effectively as it does theabnormal ones. Iit’s actually very dif-ficult to think of a single aspect ofthe car to criticise. Plus, it also feelsvery well built. The double-sealeddoors have been designed specifical-ly to feel thicker and weightier andshut with a thunk rather than aclang.

The unconventional fascia looksfar removed from the supermininorm, with a 3D effect on the main

display. More conservative buyersmay find it a bit unusual but it’s cer-tainly distinctive.

Negatives? Well, there’s only somuch money that can be thrown ata car where margins are this tightand there are plenty of unlined cub-bies and hard plastics on display.

This is somewhat disappointingfor something otherwise so wellbuilt. Still, the flip side of this is thatthe interior is hard-wearing and the

combined attentions of my three girls(Caris, age 10, Ellie, aged 7 and Amy,aged 2) have failed to corrupt it.

Overall, were I a rival manufacturerto Toyota seeking to design a class-leading supermini, I’d buy a Yaris andtake it apart piece by piece to findout just how thorough a job I neededto do.

And having done so, I’d probablygive up and go and build somethinga bit easier. Enough said.

Prices for the 1.4-litre D-4D rangeover the course ofthe year in lower run-ning costs. So far, I’m

from £11,125 to £12,855on the road, with insurancegroup 4E.

IF THE Clubman is the MINI in its mostutilitarian form, it should make evenmore sense with the MINI's most utili-tarian engine.

It all bodes well for the MINI OneClubman. Say what you like about theMINI's iconic design, zesty drivingexperience and exemplary economy,it's not the most practical destinationfor around £12,000 of your hardearned cash.

Those stingy rear seats and the lessthan captious boot on the hatchbackmodel mean that family journeys canbe a bit of a squeeze.

The Clubman was created toaddress this point and did a decentjob without setting the world alight.More affordably priced in One form, the Clubman could be at its mostappealing.

The MINI One Clubman has a 1.4-litre petrol engine and with 95bhp, itisn't the most vigorous performer.

Give the accelerator pedal a soundstomping and, if you're slick enoughwith the gearbox, 60mph can bereached in 11.6s.

That and the 114mph top speedmakes this the slowest MINI Clubmanbut neither the Cooper's 9.8s nor theCooper D's 10.4s are particularlyrapid and yet those cars are morethan capable of getting their driversgrinning.

Like all MINI products, theClubman's fun factor comes from itsresponsive steering, firm suspensionand tight body control, the OneClubman should be no different, par-ticularly as it shares the Cooper'ssporty suspension set-up.

With a longer wheelbase andaround 2cm of extra roof height plus

identical components as far back asthe B-pillars, there doesn't seem to bemuch scope for the Clubman to dra-matically exceed the interior space ofthe MINI.

Crucially though, it's 24cm longeroverall thanks to the extended rearoverhang and that has helped BMWsqueeze in 8cm of extra rear legroomwhile upping the boot capacity froma paltry 160 litres to a respectable260. The rear seats take the form of athree-seater bench in the standard car

but the standard MINI's two-personpods can be reinstated as a no costoption if you don't need the middleberth.

The Clubman is a five-door car butthe doors aren't exactly where you'dexpect them to be. It's business asusual at the front but access to therear seating is through a single 'sui-cide' door on the right-hand side.

Hinged on its rearmost edge so thatit opens in the opposite direction tothe front doors, it's positioned on the

£1,200 less than the CooperClubman, a decent saving that willbring this more practical MINI intorange for a wider group of buyers.

BMW may charge customers a pre-mium for buying into its carefully nur-tured MINI brand but it has also engi-neered the cars to be highly fuel effi-cient with buoyant residual valuesmeaning that overall running costsare very reasonable.

The MINI One Clubman can return52.3mpg on the combined cyclewhich is very good for a petrol modeland its emissions are a similarly strong130g/km.

Anyone looking for a small car withloads of space and practicality built inmight not appreciate the MINIClubman. There are far better ways ofaccommodating the family comfort-ably for this kind of money. As a MINIwith a bit more space, however, it's afine product and that holds trueregardless of which engine is installed.

The price is £13,290 on the road.

THE INSIGHTBLACKPOOL Honda will be holding aBreakfast Morning event on Saturday, March21, to launch the new Honda Insight hybridcar - one of the most exciting models thedealership has had to launch in its long asso-ciation with the Honda Brand.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for cus-tomers to be the first to see the Insight andexperience its remarkable characteristics overtea, coffee and pastries.

The new Insight is a stylish and practicalfamily hatchback offering both the privateand business users significant savings ontheir annual motoring costs and all at theprice of a conventional family hatchback.

The Honda Insight also significantly undercuts the Toyota Prius, both on initial priceand running cost over three years.

As a fleet dealership, Blackpool Hondawith the new Insight, can offer the businessuser significant savings in income tax, fuel, road tax and residual values compared withsimilar conventionally powered vehicles aswell as Toyota's Prius.

It also does its bit for the environment withlow emissions and excellent fuel economy.

So how does the Insight achieve all this?

As well asHonda's techni-cally advancedIMA petrol/elec-tric drive-train,the new Insightdisplays infor-mation to pro-mote more effi-cient and eco-nomical driving.

The centralinstrument read-out is the key toall this. Drive ina relaxedsmooth manner and the dash glows in a calm-ing green light. Get a bit over enthusiastic andthe green hue fades, eventually turning blue ifdriven really hard.

By maintaining a green approach a littleplant symbol illuminates on the Insight's dis-play as a reward and it's possible to get up to

five of thesesymbols lit if thecar is drivencarefully. At theend of yourjourney the carwill give you anaverage rating

to show how efficiently you have driven dur-ing your journey.

For all those who attend, Blackpool Hondawill offer a complimentary spring check ontheir car (worth £15)* and includes:

vauxhall

IN THE film 'March of the Penguins'there's a scene where a whole bunchof penguins stand on the edge of thepack ice waiting for the first one tojump in.

There could be leopard seals or killerwhales in there but it's inevitable thatone of the penguins has to be thefirst to go. Once one plops in, the restsurge in behind.

Vauxhall weren't amongst the firstpenguins to dive into the 'coupe con-vertible' with their Astra TwinTop, butthen, maybe that's a good thing.

This car moves the game on byoffering a folding roof that's com-posed of three main sections insteadof the usual two piece affair.

All of which means that you don'tneed to fold two huge pieces ofmetal into the car's rear end, avoidingthe strangely mis-shapen looks ofsome coupe-cabriolets.

At the press of a dash-mountedbutton, the two overhead sections ofthe roof stackon top of theglass rear

window and hinge backwards intothe boot, offering the usual benefitsof added security and safety of a hardtopped car with the wind in the hairfeel of a convertible.

What's more, the Astra TwinTopisn't merely an Astra hatch that's hadan angle grinder taken to it.

The body was designed from theground up as a convertible andVauxhall reckon the two cars share atmost 30 per cent of body parts.

With excellent chassis rigidity whenthe roof is in place, driving dynamicsshould approach those of the laudedAstra hatch.

Designed at GM Design Europe inGermany, the Astra TwinTop goes intobattle against the likes of theVolkswagen Eos and Renault MeganeCC although at almost 4500mm inlength, it's usefully bigger than both

Three petrol engines are available atprices starting from £19,000. Entrylevel customers will get the 105bhp1.6-litre Twinport unit but it may wellbe worth saving a little harder for theusefully quicker 140bhp 1.8-litremodel - the only engine that's avail-able with an automatic gearbox.

Those who really want to feel ahurricane in their hair should plumpfor the 197bhp 2.0-litre Turbo modelwhich uses the same engine as thepopular Astra 2.0T SRi. There's also a150bhp 1.9-litre diesel variant.

Vauxhall may stand charged with a

marked lack of originality when itcomes to the Astra TwinTop but ifyou're going to be a follower, atleast be a good one. That's wherethe Astra looks set to score. It'sgood looking, offers a name that UKbuyers trust and comes with a rangeof decent engines.

Overall then. the omens look verygood indeed. After all, evolution hasshown there to be certain benefits inwaiting until the coast is clear.Moorland Motors have just oneAstra 1.9 CDTi Air 150PS at£16,744, saving £4,956 on the rec-

of these rivals. The styling is also bet-ter resolved thanks in no small partto that clever folding roof arrange-ment. The rear end carries over thepetal-shaped lights of the Tigra andluggage space is better than youmight expect, even with the roofstowed.

Utility is enhanced by 'Easy Load',a feature raising the horizontallystacked parts of a folded roof at thepush of a button, making cargo eas-ily accessible. Great when you've gotan armful of shopping in otherwords.

WILL IT SUIT ME?Small cars are very much in vogue

at the moment. They're the simplest, most effective way to achieve thedual goals of minimising motoringcosts and cutting vehicle emissions, soboth manufacturers and consumersare paying them more attention thanat any time in the past. It's into thisstate of affairs that Suzuki has pitchedits latest Alto, a compact city car withthe tough task of vying for attentionagainst some very high profile rivals.THE PRACTICALITIES

We're told that the space for frontseat occupants is 'prioritised' in thecabin and so it should be but thatdoesn't bode well for those in theback. The fact is that most citycars areused to carry more than two peoplerarely, if ever, and so long as the rearseats can cope with a few shoppingbags and a tattered road atlas, they'lldo the job. The Alto's C-Pillars areextremely thick and this may result invisibility issues when parking but theinterior itself looks to have the requi-site youthful feel with the curvy linesof the dash and the door inserts. There's also a healthy amount of stor-age capacity.

Suzuki products rarely leave toomuch to the imagination in terms ofequipment and the Alto doesn't breakwith that tradition. The car is alsowell-appointed from a safety perspec-tive with Suzuki incorporating a fullcomplement of crumple zones andimpact-absorbing structures to keepoccupants safe in the event of a colli-sion. Front side and curtain airbagsare available, as is ESP stability con-trol.BEHIND THE WHEEL

The Alto's 1.0-litre petrol enginelooks ideal for a compact urban vehi-cle. The 3-cylinder unit musters 67bhpand 90Nm maximum torque at4,800rpm. That doesn't soundthrilling but in a car that tips thescales at 855kg, it's enough to coverthe 0-60mph sprint in 14 seconds.

Stick at it and a top speed of 96mphis also attainable. The Alto is 3500mmlong with a 2,360mm wheelbase andthat helps it achieve a super-tightturning radius of 4.5m that should beideal for manoeuvring into tight park-ing spaces or executing the oddcheeky U-turn.VALUE FOR MONEY

The 1.0-litre petrol engine can

return an impressive 64.2mpg on thecombined cycle along with 103g/kmemissions.

It's greener than Robin Hood on arollercoaster but if you specify thefour-speed automatic gearbox, environmental performance will tailoff.

The auto model gets 53mpg and122g/km emissions.

COULD I LIVE WITHONE?

The choice now at the disposal ofUK city car buyers is quite somethingand the Suzuki Alto looks like beinganother useful addition to the field.Operating at the value for money endof the segment, its low costs andcompetitive pricing will be crucial toits success.

motability

used cars

You don’t need tractor driving skills for a 4x4 now

CLAIMING a benefit due to you isn’ t always as easy as it seems. Meanstests, endless form filling and jumping through countless bureaucratic loopssees millions of pounds of benefits go unclaimed each year.

The Motability scheme likes to do things differently and has widened itschoice of cars available to disabled drivers yet further for this year. Vehicleslike the MINI are now available and Motability are even offering a referralscheme.

When you tell a friend, or relative, about the motability car scheme andthey decide to join, they’ll send you £25 to say thank you. And, they’ll alsosend your friend £25 as a welcome gift too. Full details are available at theMotability website (www.motability.co.uk), which also has a link to the“BrowseAloud” function for those with visual impairment.

The Motability Scheme is open to anyone who receives either the HigherRate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or WarPensioners’ Mobility Supplement, and has at least 12 months’ award lengthremaining when they apply. No waiting lists, credit checks or medical assess-ments are required. Joining the Scheme is pretty straightforward – you sim-ply need to make your choice of car and order it at your local dealership butdo visit a number of dealers to look at different makes and models, and havea thorough test drive. No extra assessments or credit checks are needed.

Insurance is also taken care of when acquiring a car through the ContractHire Scheme. It includes breakdown cover, servicing, maintenance, car tax

4,000 or so dealers that provide carsto their customers, to ensure thatconsistent standards apply across thecountry. As a result, dealers are keento provide higher service levels andare encouraged to go the extra mile. They have lots of positive feedback, but if there is an occasional problem, they want to hear about it.

Motability customers cross the spec-trum in age, location and family cir-cumstances. Perhaps the larger groupare gathered in the 45-65 age brack-et, but customers are as young as

three and as old as 100. A small per-centage are wheelchair users; othersmay use a stick or simply be able towalk unaided only for a short dis-tance. What’s not widely appreciatedis that you don't even need to be ableto drive to take advantage of thescheme. Many Motability customersprefer not to drive or are unable to. Inall cases, whether the customer drivesor not, they can nominate two peopleto drive the car on their behalf. Theymay be relatives, friends or carers.

The substantial savings to be made

by choosing a Motability car meanthat this really is the most affordableway to get motoring. You need toconsider the full cost of running yourown car, including insurance, break-down and repairs, which can hit youwhen you least expect it.

All this is included with the ContractHire Scheme and over 420,000Motability customers enjoy these ben-efits, which add up to a big savingand for most people, this saving pro-vides a better deal than owning theirown car.

Here’s why. If you are a ContractHire customer, tyres are now providedand fitted free of charge. Regular ser-vicing and repairs are carried out andpaid for by Motability. Car windowsand windscreens are also replaced atno cost to you. You will only need tobudget for fuel and topping upengine oil between services.

The range of makes and modelsavailable on the Scheme is greaterthan it has ever been - there’s nowsomething for almost every taste andbudget.

LUXURY 4X4IF there's one corner of the marketthat has changed more than anyother it's possibly the luxury 4x4 sec-tor.

Run the clock back a few years anda luxury 4x4 was either a Range Roveror something big, Japanese and agri-cultural. We've progressed a long waysince then and much of the credit forthe revolution goes to the BMW X5, acar which showed that you didn'tneed tractor driving skills to own aluxury 4x4.

Of course, the big manufacturershad to play catch up and as a resultthere is now a wider selection thanever of talented luxury 4x4s to choosefrom but if you want something a lit-tle older you will notice a drop off interms of sophistication.CHEAP & CHEERFULOPTIONS

Mk II model Range Rovers arealways a solid bet but if you needsomething with a little more attitudethen the Jeep Grand Cherokee makesa decent option. Although some ofthe earliest cars are now looking a lit-tle dog-eared, there are still a number

of facelifted cars that represent greatvalue for money. Just don’t expect ahuge cabin. The other notable con-tender in this class is the car that waseffectively left high and dry by theBMW X5. Lexus’ RX300 is probablyone of the better bets if you don’t

plan to go near any mud.AFFORDABLEMID-RANGERSThe Toyota Landcruiser Amazonmakes a great choice if you genuinelyneed acres of space, but most buyers

in this sector prefer something a littlemore urbane and this tends to boildown to either a BMW X5 or aMercedes M Class. Don’t discount theJeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CDR or itsseven-seat Commander sibling.

DESIRABLE BUTPOTENTIALLY PRICEYIf you want the best of the best, mostwill still plump for a Range Rover, inthis instance the post 2002 series IIImodel.

Upper range BMW X5 andMercedes M-class model will fall intothis compass and if you've really gotbags of cash, the more modern cropof contenders including the VolvoXC90, the Volkswagen Touareg andthe Porsche Cayenne are all up forgrabs.

The Motability Scheme has helped thousands ofdisabled people get mobile. We look at thelatest developments and answer some of themost frequently asked questions

and more but it's surprising howmany people are still unaware thatall these things are included in theworry-free package. Changing to anew car when the time comes is alsomade as easy as possible with aseamless transfer. You simply keepyour old car until the new one isready. If you have medium-to-heavyadaptations for your disability, youmay be able to keep your car forlonger by extending the lease, orarrange to transfer the adaptationsto your new vehicle. There's no rea-son why any Motability customersshould be left car-less between leas-es – unless, that is, you are on holi-day and would prefer that arrange-ment.

Motability isn’t a Governmentdepartment but it does work veryclosely with the Department forWork and Pensions. The Scheme isoverseen by Motability, a registeredcharity, and the Car Scheme is oper-ated by Motability Operations, whichis a private business owned by themajor clearing banks.
