History

• July 2007: Start of MAP ERC for the 7-state region– Industrial hygiene– Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency– Occupational health psychology– Ergonomics– Health Physics– Continuing Education– Pilot Projects Program – Interdisciplinary Integration– Diversity Objectives

• July 2010: Renewed for 5 years, through June 2015


Selected Achievements

• Led the way for inter-university collaboration in Colorado School of Public Health

• Engaged neighboring ERCs and Ag Centers• Nearly 80 Trainees in first 5 years• >$300K in Pilot Program Grants Awarded• Outreach programs catalytic for OS&H in region • Progress in diversity objectives• CE program well-launched and reaching nationally• National reputation for innovation, leadership and

October 2007, First Retreat

Theme: • “How to create a Center this is greater than the sum of its

parts and foster interdisciplinary interaction”

Vision:“To create a sustainable regional center of excellence in occupational and environmental health and safety.”

Mission Statement:“To improve occupational and environmental health and safety through education, research, and community partnerships.”


Goals (2007)• To train future leaders• To implement interdisciplinary education• To support applied and research projects that

address emerging regional needs and the NIOSH NORA.

• To engage communities in advancing OES&H in the region.

• To recruit and retain students, faculty, and professionals who represent the diversity of the region.

• To identify and provide high impact and innovative continuing education in the region.


September 2008, Second Retreat

• Review of Vision, Mission and Goals• Future Directions/Course Adjustments

– Diversity (leadership changes, increase participation at undergraduate level)

– Outreach (Extend outreach to legislature, school leaders, environmental law, media)

– CE (increase quality and number of conference, with an annual “signature” event)

– Pilot Projects (Develop annual research day, increase funding)

– Interdisciplinary Interaction: Reexamine and revise approach


Purpose of This Retreat

• To re-assess our goals in the context of changes in the field of OS&H and in the face of societal changes

2. Ensure that we meet the health and safety needs of workers

3. Build on our reputation for innovation, leadership and collegiality among NIOSH ERCs

we be more relevant to the way people learn?


Desirable Outcomes and Next Steps

• This afternoon: review and revise our goals• Initiate a dialogue that will continue and bring us to our model for the

next seven years

1) Prepare retreat minutes 2) Present retreat findings and SWOT to External Advisory Panel on

April 4-5– TODAY identify volunteers to lead discussion of key retreat topics at the

EAP meeting

3) Develop a list of potential action items at the end of today that will lead to work by smaller work groups March-August 2013

4) Reconvene in September 2013 to review, ratify, implement5) December 2013: start writing our renewal!
