Trends in Education

• Trends in online education– Online and hybrid– The “Khan academy” model– Online degree programs

• The new ways that students choose to learn– Web resources, social media, video content…– Web-based lectures– 24/7

Research and Training Support

• Lean times for extramural funding• NIOSH re-examination of extramural versus

intramural programs– Example: agricultural health and safety research

• Flat funding and probably further reductions in training grant support in OS&H

SWOT: Opportunities• Workplace health promotion, Total

Worker Health• Outreach to insurance, industry, Occ

med providers • Create less dispersed/concentrated

track• Create alternative track for practicing

docs - would require more distance learning

• Website improvements• Work with other training programs for

scholarly projects • Safety culture focus - e.g. move into

agriculture (currently in construction) • Job market, industry demand for

graduates

• Provide HP services to generate income to the program

• Pursue endowments• Partnerships with companies, govt Labs• New faculty hires • Shared interests & convergences with

activities at UC Denver (e.g. worksite wellness, aging workforce)

• Maintain high-quality student applicants and enrollment

• New courses • Emerging technologies and exposures• Emerging approaches to practice of

OHS - control banding, Bayesian decision, NIOSH operations and structure, OSHA reform

Questions for Today

• Should we be training students in Safety?– Why?– If yes, How?

• Should we be integrating health promotion with our strong focus on health protection?– Why?– If yes, How?

• What are some examples of how we are training leaders?• What modes of learning should we be using? How can

we be more relevant to the way people learn?

Desirable Outcomes and Next Steps

• This afternoon: review and revise our goals• Initiate a dialogue that will continue and bring us to our model for the

next seven years

1) Prepare retreat minutes 2) Present retreat findings and SWOT to External Advisory Panel on

April 4-5– TODAY identify volunteers to lead discussion of key retreat topics at the

EAP meeting

3) Develop a list of potential action items at the end of today that will lead to work by smaller work groups March-August 2013

4) Reconvene in September 2013 to review, ratify, implement5) December 2013: start writing our renewal!
