Gordon’s journey with MEC began in 1974.

Back then, you could buy an ice screw or

an avi probe for about the same price

as a $5 membership.

“The first thing I bought was a pair of leather ski boots,

cutting-edge gear at the time. I was off to spend

three weeks skiing, mountaineering, and winter camping.

Since then, my activities have changed a lot, but

MEC has become kind of a family tradition; both my

sons are members now.”

Look for these symbols. They demonstrate MEC’s commitment to product sustainability.

In 2007, MEC’s total sales topped $239 million on some 3 million transactions. That represents a lot of gear and a lot of members. But have you ever wondered, where the dollars you spend at MEC go? The MEC Loonie (below) shows the breakdown – from designing, manufacturing, and purchasing gear to the grants we make through our community program.

For its part, the Board’s expenditures last year totaled $913,000 – or less than half a cent for every dollar of member purchases. Over two-thirds of our budget went to three line items:

• Election and AGM (our democratic processes) = $329,000

• Directors Honoraria (pay we receive to represent you) = $207,000

• Professional Fees (advice we pay for to guide our decisions) = $121,000

When the MEC Futures Project wrapped up last year, we set three long-term goals for the Co-op. The goals are like trails; they show us the way forward, but it takes steps to reach the end. And that’s how we’re making good on the Futures Project: taking steps today, through investments in programs and projects, toward the goals we have for tomorrow.

goal 1. increase participation in self-propelled outdoor recreation in Canada To encourage and support Canadians in developing active and healthy lifestyles and a connection to the outdoors and nature.

goal 2. Support the increase and stewardship of parks and protected areas in Canada

To improve the ecological health and protection of natural areas in Canada and to ensure access for outdoor recreation for all Canadians.

goal 3. foster sustainability in the marketplace To encourage change in the marketplace, towards more sustainable individual and organizational behaviours.

2 MEC™ LightfieldThis expedition-oriented four-season, two-person mountaineering tent is a sturdy, elongated geodesic dome. Two vestibules: the deeper serves as a storage area; the smaller as a weather “airlock” for ins and outs. Zip-out mesh skylight for warmer weather use. Same bomber fabrics as the TGV; Yunan Hercules® scandium alloy poles. Paprika/Dijon.

3 MEC™ NunatakA Himalayan-proven four-season mountain shelter for two or three people. Critical reinforcements, patches, and ties are welded to eliminate leaks and the need for hand sealing. Self-equalizing Hypalon® anchor points for maximum strength. Fly: 2000mm coated 75-denier ripstop polyester. Floor: 10,000mm coated HT-Seal™ 70-denier coated nylon taffeta. Canopy: 30-denier tensilk HT, undyed for greater strength and reduced effluent. Sturdy Yunan Hercules® scandium alloy poles. Paprika/Dijon.

5 MEC™ Apollo, Gemini, and MercurySuperlight, surprisingly spacious shelters that backpackers, cyclists, and paddlers will love. Their wedge shapes provide generous headroom and vestibule space. Windows at either end brighten the interiors. To minimize weight and bulk, many ultralight shelters use light fabrics throughout. However, the waterproofness of ultralight floors may abrade away long before the rest of the tent wears out. We’ve used our famous field-proven HT-Seal™, polyurethane coated to 10,000mm, for the floors. (They’re bathtub style for security on soggy ground.) It’s slightly heavier, but much more durably waterproof. The flies are light, silicone-treated, polyurethane-coated nylon. Attached central hubs on the Yunan aluminum pole system allow rapid tent set-up. The Apollo and Gemini have twin doors and vestibules for communal convenience; the Mercury has one to minimize weight and bulk. Dijon.

Tech Talk

syNTHeTIC, NaTuRal, OR bOTH?Synthetic bags are very affordable and hold up to dampness better than down. A soaking wet synthetic bag can be wrung out and can eventually dry through body heat alone.

At the same warmth rating as a synthetic, down is lighter and more compact by a third or more. It forms to your body, with fewer air pockets, so you warm up faster and stay warm with less energy. Though more expensive, a down bag can last for a decade or longer.

On extended sub-zero trips, condensation inside the down layer can slowly build-up dampness. These settings call for a protective synthetic overbag, or a down/synthetic hybrid. The condensation point will move past the down, keeping it dry and lofty.

Tech Talk

winTer booT TemPeraTure raTingsThere are three important things to know about our Active Temperature Ratings (ATR):

1. “Active” ratings assume you’re on the move. If you’ll be standing around, step up to a warmer boot or one with room for additional socks.

2. There is no official testing standard for temperature ratings. Those listed are provided by the manufacturer and haven’t been verified by MEC.

3. Your real-world experience can vary. You’ll be warmest when you’re well fed, well rested, and active. If you know from experience you tend to have cold feet (often the case for women), or if you’ll be pushing the limits of your endurance, opt for warmer footwear that’s roomy enough for additional socks, and carry spare socks so you can change to dry ones. You’ll be off on the right foot for winter fun.

Co-oPs RuLe (aCTuaLLy, you RuLe)

When you join a co-op you get more than just products and services. You become a member and an owner, and that gives you a say in the way your co-op works.

The Right stuffMaximizing profits isn’t usually what co-ops are about. They supply the things that members think are important and they exist so that members get some benefit from their pooled resources. In the case of MEC, we provide responsibly made gear, fair prices, and services that help people get outside.

super-PowerAll co-ops are democratic outfits. Your votes select the boards who oversee them. As a member, you can run for a board position. Since the decision making is in your hands, you can help determine what a co-op does in the future and the priorities that guide it.

Chalk, Cheese, and Chequing Co-ops can supply a whole lot more than climbing gear and fleece. You can get pretty much any product or service you want. You can buy your food from a co-op, live in a housing co-op, open accounts with credit unions, or join a car co-op to get around town. On top of all that, co-operatives often return any surplus back to the community. This can be in the form of dividends for the members or support for community groups.

more more moreJust as you choose to be a member of a co-op, you can choose your level of involvement. If you’re into it you can find more about our co-op at mec.ca/belonging or others at coopscanada.com, or you can just carry on looking at the catalogue.

THIS BLUFF’S FOR YOU!ACCESS AND MECRaise a glass to success. For years, the local climbing community worked to secure public access to Skaha Bluffs in BC’s South Okanagan. It’s one of the most popular climbing areas in Canada, and a unique ecological reserve.

MEC got on board with The Land Conservancy (TLC) in 2006 to help the cause. MEC members donated over $140,000. Through grants and donation matching, MEC contributed $350,000. Pooled with support from the Province of BC, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Climber’s Access Society of BC, and other partners, TLC was able to close the $5.2 million deal in January, 2008.

So here’s to this victory – and to future triumphs. These days we’re working with the Park Dufresne Society to preserve a bit of land in the Laurentians. To fi nd out about current projects, visit mec.ca/access.

To fi nd out about current projects, visit mec.ca/access.

ethical sourcing and Mec Last year, 34% of MEC-brand gear was made in China; 30% was made in Canada. The rest came from 14 other countries around the world. We know our members are concerned about where their gear comes from, and how it's made.

To explore these concerns in depth, we created a blog. It's authored by our Director of Ethical Sourcing, Harvey Chan. Harvey's job is to monitor social justice within our supply chain and work to improve conditions for the people who make MEC-brand gear. The blog is his opportunity to communicate directly with the people who buy MEC-brand gear.

Manufacturing capacity in Canada is declining, and although we are a large retailer of outdoor gear in Canada, we are far too small to single- handedly support an entire manufacturing sector.

Factories in China have the technical capacity to make high-quality gear, to meet seasonal deadlines, and to do both at prices that members have demonstrated they are willing to pay.

We accept that we live in an era of global-ization. Goods and capital flow readily around the world, so should human rights. We select factories that will meet fair labour practices, wherever they are located. We build long-term relationships with these factories in order to understand the causes of non-compliance and work at finding real solutions.

We believe that business can drive change, and that we are more productive when we work together with industry, society, factories, and consumers.

Tech Talk

DOWNDown is one of nature’s finest insulators. Nothing matches its compressibility, resilience, and warmth for weight. Often mistaken for feathers, down is in fact plumules – tiny pods of light, fluffy filaments, that line the underside of waterfowl feathers. However, all down-fillled garments contain some feathers and feather fibres.

Fill-power is a measure of down quality. Higher numbers mean more insulation per weight (e.g., 800 fill-power is warmer than 650 fill-power).

CArINg fOr DOWN

Despite its light and fragile appearance, down is very durable. To clean and maintain your down garment:

• Close zippers before washing.

• Use a special down cleaning soap.

• Wash gently by hand, or use a front-loading washing machine on the gentle cycle.

• Run the garment for at least two rinse cycles.

• Machine dry using a front-loading dryer, large enough for the garment to tumble freely. Set to the lowest heat. Add a clean tennis shoe or tennis ball to break up the down clumps. Make sure the garment is completely dry before removing.

A well cared for down garment will provide you with comfort and warmth for many years.

recycling polyester

Recycled polyester consumes up to 75% less crude oil than new polyester, and diverts waste from landfills. We’d like recycled polyester to become the new norm, much as we want orgainically grown cotton to replace conventionally grown.

You can help create a demand for this fabric by looking for, asking for, and buying recyled poly. You can also return polyester garments to our stores when the items have reached the end of their useful lives. They’ll be broken down into raw polyester fibre and used to make new, 100% recycled garments.

The result: an outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio, superb moisture transfer, excellent breathability and packability. finding farleySetting off by canoe from their home in Canmore, Alberta, Karsten Heuer, Leanne Allison, their two-year-old son Zev, and their border collie Willow weren't sure how they'd get all the way to author Farley Mowat's house in Cape Breton.

In 1997 Karsten and Leanne spent two years walking from Yellowstone to Yukon, and spent their “honeymoon” migrating with a herd of 120,000 caribou in 2003. Out of these adventures came the books Walking the Big Wild and Being Caribou, and an award-winning documentary, Being Caribou.

On a whim, Karsten had sent a manuscript copy of Being Caribou to Farley Mowat, and received a letter in response. This was then followed with a phone call, and an invitation to visit his farm in Cape Breton.

It didn’t take them long to hatch a plan that would take them to Farley by means of a truly Canadian pilgrimage – by canoe, train, and sailboat – winding through the settings of Farley's stories, and taking them to places only known through his writing. That they were taking their two-year-old with them through weeks of upstream paddling, 28 portages, huge lake crossings, some whitewater, and encounters with bears, definitely raised a few eyebrows. But other than some blackfly bites, he not only survived – he thrived.

And there were magical times when they suddenly realized they were at an exact spot from one of Farley’s stories, and their respect for his story telling and ability to capture Canada’s landscape only grew throughout the trip. Visits from some of his favourite characters – a great horned owl, a white wolf, and a giant fin whale – were also taken as a sign they were on the right track.

In September 2007, after five months and over 5000km, they completed their journey to Farley's door. And at 86 years old, he still had the spunk to greet them with laughter and warmth.

MERINo

Super-fine, super popular merino underwear. The fine-gauge, 18.5 micron wool isn’t itchy like coarser wool. The complex natural structure of the fibres absorbs moisture and slows the rate of evaporative cooling. It helps buffer changes to the warm microclimate next to your skin. •

CLoSING THE Loop Long-time MEC gear testers, Pierre Bouchard and Janick Lemieux are near the end of their five-year, multi-stage cycle tour around the active volcanoes that circle the Pacific – the “Ring of Fire.”

In summer 2006, Pierre and Janick’s itinerary had them cycling through Japan, the Northern Marianas Islands, and Russia. Their mega-tour of the Japanese volcanoes led them to the Ibusuki Volcanic Field, and from the volcanic cone of Rishiri Island, to Hokkaido and the Akan Caldera. Along the way they met warm, friendly residents and discovered a paradise for hiking and biking, “the cheapest and most rewarding ways to discover the Land of the Rising Sun.”

Describing their travels through far eastern Russia as difficult would be an understatement. You might think it was the incessant mosquito attacks on the taiga, or the threat of riding through the world’s densest grizzly population that slowed their progress. But, the greatest adversity came from red tape, and the security officers who turned down successive requests for permits. With luck, perseverance, and some flexible interpretation of the rules, they finally made it to the most majestic and active volcanoes on their tour, and were able to cross the entire Kamchatka peninsula.

So after cycling for more than 53,000km, all that’s left is Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. When we last heard from them, they were waiting in Vancouver to begin. “The access roads to the Garibaldi volcanic belt are still covered with snow. As soon as we have the green light from the Forest Service, we’ll start our wheels turning to close up the loop.”

You can count on us to act with integrity. We’re driven by passion, not profit. We continue to look for ways to protect our wild spaces and reduce the ecological footprint of our business.

Why We’re HereWe help people enjoy the benefits of self-propelled wilderness-oriented recreation by providing equipment, services, and expertise.

Community Involvement at MECMEC pledges at least 1% of sales, over $10 million in grants to date, in support of wilderness conservation and outdoor recreation projects that benefit Canada’s outdoor community. Find out more at mec.ca/belief.

Your Board of DirectorsMEC’s Board is an integral part of the Co-op; it sets MEC’s direction as an outdoor retailer. The Board takes its cues from you: every year three of the nine Directors’ positions become vacant, and MEC member-owners elect new Directors for a three-year term. For more information visit mec.ca/ board.

Mec's 2007 accountability report details the social, environmental, and economic impacts of making and selling millions of pieces of gear. It's the second time we've examined our business and published the findings. In the first report, we took stock of where we were, and set targets for where we wanted to go. This time, we're looking at how we're measuring up to the commitments we made.

Reaching those goals is challenging. For example, we managed to lower the CO2 emissions produced through transporting products, from 204 grams per product in 2005, to 191 grams in 2007. However, since we sold more products in 2007, the total emissions actually increased. So we know we're not yet doing enough to reach our goal of a 5% absolute reduction, but we're making a start.

You can read the report online at mec.ca/accountability.
