ml | editor’s letter

My husband and I just spent the better part of a beautifulsummer Sunday roaming the aisles of the local home-improve-ment store. Why? We were agonizing over door knobs. Whichgot me thinking, why is it that we spend so much time andeffort and money shaping our material world?

In his book “The Architecture of Happiness,” author Alainde Botton offers an explanation that makes sense to me. “Inessence,” he writes, “what works of design and architecture talkto us about is the kind of life that would most appropriatelyunfold within and around them.” To de Botton, to describe a

building as beautiful is about more than aesthetics; “it implies an attraction to the par-ticular way of life this structure is promoting through its roof, door handles, windowframes, staircase and furnishings,” he says.

This issue is a celebration of beautiful architecture and design. So as we chose theHome of the Year (featured on page 124) and the professionals for this year’s list of TopMountain Architects & Interior Designers(page 101), we kept de Botton’s words in mind.

We’re drawn to the high country because ofthe life we imagine we’ll lead here: We’ll stepoutside in the morning to watch the sun filterthrough the aspens, we’ll feel cozy when the rainfrom an afternoon storm raps on the roof, and in the evening we’ll stand at a wide win-dow and watch as the sun disappears behind the mountains.

A great mountain home will facilitate these experiences that we look forward to.Lacking the words to describe it, we may call its architecture and interiors “beautiful.”But what that feeling of beauty really is, as de Botton writes, is a sign that we’ve comeupon a material articulation of our ideas of a good life.

“What works of design and architecture talk to us about isthe kind of life that would unfoldwithin and around them.”

LETTERS FROM THE SCBA

The Summit County Builders Association (SCBA) is bringing you 24 remarkable homes to tour inour 15th Annual Parade of Homes. Your admission to these homes directly supports The SummitFoundation. This well-respected grant-making organization funds more than 255 nonprofit organi-zations in the area. Through admission fees and corporate matching funds from SCBA membersApex Mountain Homes and Trilogy Partners, $72,929 has been contributed to The SummitFoundation over the past three years.

SCBA is comprised of 200 member businesses whose employees live and work in the community. They take pride in bringing you many innovative products and energy-saving systems. Some ofthese innovative technologies may not be visible, so be sure to ask the builder’s representativeabout these features.

Today, new homes are safer, more efficient, and more packed with popular features than ever. Safety—Technological advances mean that today’s homes are safer, because new homes take

advantage of breakthroughs in building science. Most homes in the parade have advanced electrical systems, hardwired smoke detectors and fire-resistant construction details. Some haveincluded sprinkler systems. Windows in patio doors and near stairways have tempered glass, which makes them less likely to cause injury if they break.

Efficency—Watch for a larger array of products and materials to make a home more energy-efficient. Many home-builders participate in programs like ENERGY STAR,® which promotes energy-efficient appliances. One of the latest movements in the building industry is the incorpo-ration of sustainable building practices. Our local builders are siting homes to take maximumadvantage of sunlight and shade, and using innovative products like active and/or passive solarsystems, light-conserving windows, insulation, decking made from recycled materials, andreclaimed materials like dead standing timber and beetle-kill pine.

4 2009 SUMMIT COUNTY PARADE OF HOMES 10 A.M. – 5 P.M. SEPTEMBER 19 & 20 SEPTEMBER 26 & 27

DESCRIPTION

When homeowners Buck and Jean Tippinswere planning for retirement, they fell inlove with Summit County and its year-roundrecreation opportunities. “We’ve alwaysloved mountains, fishing and log homes. Wecombined the talents of Brian Higgins, architect, and local log home specialistBrian Wray, general contractor, to create abeautiful, livable and comfortable home thatis just right for us. The design, craftsman-ship and location on the Blue River comple-ment each other. The on-site coordinationof the staff and subcontractors during thebuilding process made the home betterthan we ever could have imagined!”

From the paver-stone driveway, guests arewelcomed by a hand-carved eagle on theridge beam and hand-carved front door withsand-cast Emtek hardware. Native moss rockenhances the beauty of hand-peeled logsand Mountain Log Homes’ signature beetlepine board-on-board siding.

The natural landscaping of matureEngelmann spruce and willows was comple-mented by the addition of aspen trees.Perennial wildflowers attract native birdsand wildlife that can be enjoyed from multi-ple outdoor living spaces. The homeowner’sLabrador retriever plays in the 30-foot dogrun and her own dog wash in the garage.

The homeowners enjoy their home’s

vaulted ceilings, comfortable traffic patternand excellent storage spaces, from built-inbookcases to innovative under-eave spaces. The spacious master bath features a jettedtub, steam shower with etched door andhand-painted Kohler sinks and accessories.Although the home is more than 4,300square feet, Jean achieved a cozy“Appalachian cabin” style with the additionof six-inch-wide tongue-and-groove pine onthe framed interior walls.

DESCRIPTION

When it comes to building “green”, ApexMountain Homes does more than acceptthe responsibility. The firm embraces thechallenge. The Hart residence in Frisco is abeautiful example of this commitment tosustainability and demonstrates that home-owners needn’t sacrifice luxury when building to eco-friendly standards.

The exterior of this home is crafted in classic Apex style to engage the surroundingviews. Massive hand-hewn timbers of localbeetle-kill wood are angled to echo thecraggy slopes of nearby Royal Mountain, while natural dry-stacked moss rock reflectsthe grandeur of its exposed rock faces.Inside, natural stone, reclaimed hickory floor-ing and locally crafted alder cabinetry arenot only beautiful, but also represent sus-tainable materials and practices. Eco-friendlywool carpet adds another natural, environ-mentally friendly element to the interior.

While the home is luxurious in appear-ance, it is miserly in energy consumption andis a stellar example of sustainable building. The home earned so many points under thenewly adopted Summit Sustainable BuildingCode that the plan-review fee was refundedby the town of Frisco. What’s more, thehome tested 55 on the internationally recog-nized Home Energy Rating System (HERS),meaning the home is 45% more efficientthan one built to typical code standards.

DESCRIPTION

The owners of this home wanted a warmand inviting mountain home in the woodswhere their family and friends could gather.Breckenridge Realty’s Kim Stevenson foundthe ideal lot to meet the owner/architect’srequirements: one with dense trees and a sloping terrain.

The lot’s dense forest and privacy beggedfor outdoor spaces that would allow the family to enjoy that tranquility even if theweather would not cooperate, and so thedesign team created a covered deck thatextends the indoor space to the outdoors; astone fireplace removes the chill from the air.

The owners wanted their home to feel asif it had already stood the test of time. Theirvision was realized with reclaimed woodfloors, a reclaimed wood ceiling in the master bedroom, the use of exterior stonematerial inside the home, distressedDouglas fir timbers, knotty alder cabinets, trim and doors, stones and granite, warmearth-tone colors, and attention to smalldetails at every turn. The exterior designallows the home to exist in harmony with its natural setting.

During the conceptual design phase, input was given by family, friends, MarcHogan and Tom Eble. Hogan provided con-structive comments that enabled the ownerto transition his schematic designs to BHHPartners. Tom Eble, President of CabernetConstruction, was chosen early in the designprocess served as a valuable resource forplanning, design and construction.

Cabernet Construction made the buildingprocess a wonderful experience, and thefamily appreciates the efforts of all thecraftsmen who worked on the home. Aftervisiting Colorado for over thirty years withthe dream of a place of their own, they nowhave their little piece of wooded bliss.

DESCRIPTION

“Stone columns supporting wooden beams, the warmth and scent of a wood-burning fire-place and carefully framed views of green valleys and snow-topped peaks. A rusticmountain homage to F. L. Wright, a residenceinspired by 1920s craftsman architecture. Ahome filled with light, music, art, laughter, and calm.” These inspired words from clientswere interpreted and transformed throughthe design/build process by Trilogy Partners. And the result: the home that the owners of581 Preston Way in Breckenridge had beendreaming of for a lifetime.

The owners, who had been inspired byother Trilogy projects, charged the designand build team at Trilogy Partners with allaspects of planning, design and construction. With the assistance of their design partners,Trilogy helped the owners achieve a homeperfectly sited to capture stunning valleyand mountain views. A rustic stone fireplaceanchors the living room. Two master suiteswere a must, as was a romantic owners’bathing suite and a gourmet kitchendesigned for multiple chefs because theowners enjoy cooking together.

Because this home above all was a placeto gather, there is plenty of room for family

and friends to unite during the holidays toski, watch a movie, cook a meal, and enjoyone another’s company. A place from whichto appreciate the high country, to watch thesun set, the snow fall, the seasons change.

A home like this is not built in a day butin many. Much thought and energy arerequired, just the right balance of creativityand practicality, and, above all, patience. And in the end, as with all Trilogy Projects, the result is something uniquely reflective ofthe owners, and lasting. On display now andfor many years at 581 Preston Way in TheHighlands at Breckenridge.

DESCRIPTION

What is it that truly defines a dream home?Is it lavish and luxurious finishes, abundantamenities or sprawling mountain views? Thisunique home has it all and takes it a stepfurther, focusing not only on quality finishesbut also on what lies below the surface.

Energy efficiency and sustainability areimportant, and this home proves that you canbe a good steward of our planet while enjoying the benefits of the high-end, quality custom finishes of a mountain home. Thisgraceful home combines a beautiful, environ-mentally responsible design with technologythat makes it even more sustainable.

Working together with the owner anddesigners, RJB Development was able toconstruct a home that utilizes a “house as asystem” approach. By looking at the home asa whole and realizing that no one system wasenough, the various unique “micro systems”were brought together to function as a highefficiency, beautifully constructed home.

The home utilizes water-saving featuressuch as low-flow plumbing fixtures and smartirrigation systems that water the lawn andplants using an underground drip/micro irrigation system. The home is constructedfrom engineered, environmentally friendlymaterials, with radiant-heated floors and anefficient lifetime composition and metal roof.Walls contain closed-cell spray-foam insula-

tion, which seals the envelope of the homeand limits unwanted air infiltration. Europeantilt-and-turn low-E2 windows reflect heat andharmful ultraviolet light while providingample natural ventilation. With the touch of aswitch, motorized Rolladen security shutterscan automatically shade the windows to keeprooms cool. The HEPA whole-house air-circu-lation system helps maintain a healthy envi-ronment and a high level of indoor air quality. All the appliances are ENERGY STAR ratedfor better efficiency, from the Viking refrigera-tor to the low-water-consumption dishwasher.

What’s more, this 4,000-plus-square-footcustom home is powered by 45 solar panels. The Sanyo solar-photovoltaic (PV) panelscomprise a 9.0-kilowatt system that feedselectricity to the grid and effectively spinsthe home’s meter backwards duringColorado’s abundant sunny days.

Tying together these unique systems is thehome-automation system. The automationinfrastructure is set up with the capability toefficiently monitor and control lighting, blinds, shutters, irrigation controls, thermostats, thesecurity system, audio and video, weathermonitoring, elevator and other components.

It is the hope of all who have helped putthis masterpiece together that you’ll have theopportunity to visit this unique home that isan example of what meticulous planning andquality construction can accomplish.

Trestlewood takes the concept of conservation

to a whole new scale. A family owned business,

Trestlewood reclaims lumber and timbers from

old structures and prepares the material for sale

at its Idaho, Utah and Indiana mill facilities.

It all began in 1993, with the salvage of the

historic Great Salt Lake’s Lucin Cutoff Railroad

trestle. “The trestle had Douglas fir timbers and

redwood decking,” recalls Joe Cannon, Trestle-

wood’s vice president of purchasing. “Our

decision to pursue the salvage led to obtaining

different project capabilities, and now we have

sources from dozens of different projects

around the country.”

Trestlewood’s signature products, including

timbers, flooring, siding and lumber, are known

for their range of colors and unique character-

istics, which are in high demand. “We see more

and more people using rustic wood products,

such as weathered barnwood and hand-hewn

timbers,” Cannon says.

While they won’t turn homeowners away, the

company works primarily as a wholesaler with

contractors, architects and designers who have

knowledge of reclaimed wood and can offer

guidance about usage. A timely advantage?

“Reusing historical sources fits into an environ-

mental niche that’s becoming more popular,”

says Cannon. “We’re proud to be a part of that.”

OUR 2009 HOME OF THE YEAR TAKES A FRESH APPROACH TO TRADITIONALEXPECTATIONS FOR A ROCKY MOUNTAIN LODGE IN BIG SKY COUNTRY

A SENSE OF REDISCOVERY

THIS PAGE: “The more dramatic the view in a living room is, the more youneed something solid to hold you in the room,” says architect LarryPearson. “This fireplace is so organized and solid that it literally anchorsyou with such an incredible view at the end of the room.” Interior designerCharles de Lisle loves the playful nature of the room’s two big lamps, whichhe had made from tree-shaped cast-iron hitching posts from the 1880s.

to a veritable forest of majestic roof timbers, the six-bedroom, three-story lodge in The YellowstoneClub seems at first glance to have grown organically from its natural surroundings in Big Sky,Montana. This, undoubtedly, is a residence worthy of consideration as Mountain Living’s Home of theYear. What elevates the home above the rest, however, is the many ways in which its architecturaldetails, finishes and furnishings subtly reinterpret and sometimes even challenge the local mountaindwelling vernacular while staying true to its heritage and spectacular location.

Indeed, the original source of the home’s inspiration was the setting itself: approximately five hillsideacres with 270-degree panoramas of pine-clad peaks and snow-covered resort slopes. Principal architectLarry Pearson, AIA, of Pearson Design Group in Bozeman, along with several investing partners, beganthe project as a spec home. They were drawn, he explains, by the lot’s “great southerly exposure, itsbreathtaking views, and the privacy it offered within an incredible mountain resort community.” >>

That combination proved irresistible. Before the house was even fully framed, a Bay Area family withtwo young children bought the property as a second home. They, in turn, enlisted San Francisco-basedinterior designer Charles de Lisle of The Charles de Lisle Workshop, who had already proven himselfsimpatico with their style on another home. “I had never done a house in the mountains before,” saysde Lisle, “so I took it as a chance to come up with a fresh approach to that language.”

A harmonious dialogue soon developed. Pearson’s faithful yet fresh interpretations of mountainlodge architectural traditions dovetailed perfectly with de Lisle’s eclectic approach to creating com-fortable rooms that feel as if they have evolved over time and, he says, offer family and guests alike “asense of adventure and discovery” that make the interiors as intriguing as the views are thrilling.

Take, for example, the interior space where so much of the home’s socializing and relaxing takeplace: the living room, crowned by a 25-foot-tall log post-and-beam ceiling. Here, wide-plank whiteoak floors and an 18-foot-tall fireplace of the same Harlow stone featured on the exterior capture allof the majesty of a grand retreat, “giving a sense of place to the whole building,” says Pearson. Thesurfaces and their assembly are also quietly simplified and streamlined, without the fussiness orgrandiosity that might have been added in a bygone era.

To this environment, de Lisle added “appropriately big-scaled furniture, but not overstuffed seating likeyou might expect. I wanted it to feel right for casual family life.” Above the table in the formal dining area,he playfully complemented the living room’s simple hand-forged iron chandeliers, which look like they’remade from antique barrel hoops, with an “antler” chandelier of clear Venetian glass. “I think it’s fantas-tic,” adds Pearson, who salutes the “sense of discovery” such design choices brought to the space. >>

together, and add up to a greatvignette.” BELOW: The master

DESIGNING TO SCALE When a house’s architecture is as grandly scaled as this Home ofthe Year’s, special attention must be paid to making sure that the furnishings harmonize with thedimensions of their surroundings. “The bold scale excited me, so I just started playing with that,”says interior designer Charles de Lisle. Herewith, some tips for keeping things in proportion:

Customize when necessary. It can be difficult to find ready-to-use furniture big enough to match the setting. De Lisle commissioned key custom-designed pieces, such as a 14-foot-long sofa that facesthe living room’s massive stone fireplace.

Simplify for focus. Though the scale is large, detailing doesn’t have to be. The formal dining area’s solid-oak pedestal table, which expands from a circle seating six to an oval for 14 people, was kept absolute-ly clean-lined and simple. “I wanted the Spanish tall-back chairs and the Venetian glass chandelier tobe the story in this area,” says de Lisle.

Don’t ignore the small stuff. Regardless of the interior dimensions, de Lisle never forgot that small detailshelp bring a home to life. “I spent lots of time going to flea markets, junk stores, and antique malls,” hesays, “to find the kinds of fun, random stuff that feels like heritage pieces.”

BELOW: A master of illusion, de Lisle designed the childrens’ bedrooms to feel as though they were filledwith well-loved antiques; the colorful dressers, bedding and draperies are new. In the daughter’s cheerfulroom (below, right), the “rusted iron” bed frame is made of wood that’s been carefully stained to trick the eye.

home of the year

Page 130: Mountain Living

132

Still more adventurous discoveries await in the home’s private quarters. De Lisle bestowed uponthe daughter’s and son’s bedrooms a feeling that they were furnished with beloved family hand-me-downs. The rooms feature antique-style linens and dressers, colorful throw rugs, and a wooden bedframe stained to look like rusted iron in her room, another constructed from rough-hewn logs in his.

The master suite features grander but no less rustic-feeling touches like a caramel-colored cowhideheadboard, tangerine-striped draperies, his-and-hers vanity walls with herringbone-patterned woodpaneling, and dual sinks fashioned from two-century-old Italian terracotta planters. Combined withsuch architectural touches as log doorway frames that seem fashioned from still-living trees, the result, says Larry Pearson, feels at once “rustic, sophisticated and luxurious.”

Of course, neither architect nor designer let the attention stray very long from the Home of the Year’sparamount luxury: its surroundings. From the main house, a pathway meanders downhill to a pond and aseparate guest cabin—what Pearson describes as “a discovery yet to happen.” And the main home’s stairwayoffers its own special destination, ascending from its lowermost massive stone walls, through ever-more-airy timberwork, to an uppermost tower room offering breathtaking views in every direction. Furnished byde Lisle to resemble a pioneer’s cabin, the little room is complete with a wall-mounted deer head.

Evident here, as throughout the dwelling, is an ever-lighthearted yet practical counterpointbetween past and present. “It is definitely a historic lodge in form,” observes Pearson, “but with amuch more playful style that responds to the needs and lifestyle of a modern family.”

THIS PAGE: “Most of the buildingmaterials you see come from our

region, including the beautifulstonework in Harlow stone; the

large-diameter standing-deadlodgepole pine logs; aged boards

salvaged from buildings in the area, and handsplit cedar shakes from

the northwest that weather andgray, giving a sense of place to the

whole building,” says Pearson.

A SENSE OF DISCOVERY The Home of the Year’s vast surroundings, extensive grounds, andexpansive floor plan gave architect Larry Pearson, AIA, the chance to provide owners and guests alikewith ample opportunities to “discover new views, new places, and new character as they move throughthe house.” Some highlights:

A breathtaking entry. “The house’s entry room is intimate in scale,” says Pearson. “Then, you turn right, walk around a huge log column into the living room, and suddenly realize you’ve arrived at somethingmuch grander as you take in the panoramic views of gorgeous mountains, forests and ski slopes.”

Rising to new heights. On the home’s lowest daylighted level, the staircase begins completely embracedby stone walls, “like the foundation of an old castle,” says Pearson. One level up, it becomes a con-struction of “hewn planks and heavy timbers recycled from regional barns.” At last, it reaches thehome’s tower room, which offers 360-degree panoramas of the Rockies.

A fresh destination. Windows in the living room and the master suite alike offer tantalizing glimpsesdownhill of two small buildings comprising a 1,200-square-foot guest cabin beside a pond. “From themain house,” says Pearson, “you walk through terraces down to the cabin, making it a great destina-tion for a cookout, a sleepover, a summer afternoon swim, or winter ice-skating.” ●

Blurred BoundariesA COLORADO RANCH HOUSE CELEBRATES ITS MOUNTAIN VIEWS WITH LIVING SPACES THAT EXTEND TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Page 135: Mountain Living

137

THIS PAGE: The unassuming nature of this Colorado home belies its inspiring plan, bothindoors and out. Architect Rich Carr, of CCY Architects, wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the greatest challenges in creating this residence, he says, was balancing the humbleness appropriate for this mountain setting with a design that was artfully inspiring, too.

Page 136: Mountain Living

138

Page 137: Mountain Living

139

OPPOSITE: The red front door is an immediate clue to this home’s accent hue. It’s one ofseveral architectural elements that echo the reds found in the owners’ collection of NativeAmerican art and on nearby shed barns. THIS PAGE: Many of the building materials usedinside this residence would feel equally at home outside. Even the barn-style door thatcan close off one wing makes you think twice about whether you’re indoors or out.

Page 138: Mountain Living

140

Nor is it unusual for them to extend their living spaces to the outdoors, where they can take in theviews and the fresh mountain air. But for this Colorado mountain home near Aspen, architect RichCarr and landscape architect Richard Shaw took those two concepts to an entirely new level, creatinginterior/exterior relationships so seamless that it’s hard to tell where one stops and the other begins.

It didn’t hurt that these two professionals have collaborated on projects for 20-some years. Or that thehomeowners were so enthusiastic about the natural beauty of the site; the home’s agrarian setting was a primemotivator for the overall design, says Shaw. In fact, the first thing you notice about this residence is that it’snot, well, noticeable. Slung low on the land, it’s quiet and simple, befitting the owners’ low-key lifestyle. “Theproperty itself is unique,” Carr says of the 35-acre ranch situated within a larger development. “It’s the furthestone toward the mountains and the view—very pastoral, with no development to the south or west.”

Taking full advantage of the spectacular site, Carr designed a contemporary ranch home that stretchesout on and engages the land, creating living spaces both indoors and out while staying true to his firm’sbasic values. “We don’t really have a signature style, just a philosophy of creating structures that fit with thetradition of place, that are both inspiring and unexpected,” he explains.

That “inspiring and unexpected” point of view plays out in myriad ways. The home’s exterior cedar sid-ing, for instance, carries through to the interior walls. But inside and out, the material is used in a varietyof ways—horizontally, vertically, even gapped to allow soft dappled light to filter inside. The latter treat-ment, says Carr, is reminiscent of barns and outbuildings that were built in the West for hundreds of years.

In the high country, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to want to bring their surroundings into their homes.

141

OPPOSITE: By keeping furnishings simple, the focus stays squarely on the archi-tectural details—and the equally impressive views. THIS PAGE: For Rich Carr, thinking from a sustainable point of view is a given, evidenced by the log columnsand beams used throughout this home. At the same time, he says, “materialsneed to feel like they are a good fit in the West, and will withstand the test of time.”

Page 141: Mountain Living

143

Although stunning mountain vistas were agiven for this contemporary ranch home, landscape architect Richard Shaw ofDesign Workshop found a way to enhancethem. It was crucial, he felt, to connecteach of the interior rooms to the long-distance view. “People are often intent on seeing everything in the distance,” hesays, “but we thought it was important tocreate interest in the foreground, to modifythe view just a little from every room.”

Vertical To provide a sense of balancefor the horizontal mountain range in thedistance, vertical elements were introduced by adding strategically placedtrees, including tall narrow-leaf cotton-wood, quaking aspen, Colorado bluespruce and ponderosa pine.

Natural It’s no coincidence that thenewly planted trees look like they’vealways been there. From wide swaths ofnative grasses that move in the wind and“Gro-Low” sumac interspersed here andthere, to Rocky Mountain columbine, larkspur, hosta and Woods’ rose, eachplant was carefully selected and placedto look as if it sprung up quite naturally.

NATURAL BEAUTY

Striking red pop-out window bays also enter the indoor/outdoor conversation, the architectural ele-ments relating to the reds found in the owners’ collection of Native American art, as well as those of near-by shed barns. But perhaps most apparent in terms of bringing the outdoors in—and vice versa—is thecreative use of Arizona sandstone. Not only was the flooring used throughout most of the interior but, saysCarr, “it slides right out the doors, creating terraces.”

“There’s a direct connection to the topography, even though there is quite a bit of a grade,” says Shaw. “Wealways try to find a way to make a level transition to match the natural grade.”

Each outdoor living area has its own sense of place and purpose. The north courtyard, with a majesticfireplace, is formed by a U-shaped section of the house and underscored by oversized pieces of stone, somemeasuring 6 feet long. But, points out Shaw, the floor of this terrace is as much about the stones as thesoft groundcover between them. Magnificent sliding-glass doors allow access from this space to the mainliving space; opposite them, another set leads back out to the south terrace. Take a left, and you’re in themore-shaded oasis court; take a right, and you’re on your way to the pool.

“The challenge was in finding a way to bring all of the pieces together, to form the terraces in a waythat was not presumptuous or overwhelming,” says Shaw. “There’s a subtlety in the [surrounding] grass-lands, so even in the more formal areas we used soft colors and a mix of plant materials. The challengewas to make the house feel like it belonged on this piece of land.”

Carr couldn’t agree more. In designing any project, he says, “you have to go beyond stylistic influences. It’s just as important to listen to the land.” ●

Jon Dahl may have 30 years of experience framing complicated custom houses, but you won’tfind many right angles or squared spaces in the home he recently built for his family inTelluride. “With Jack [architect Jack Snow of RKD Architects], everything is skewed and twist-ed, walls flared and angled,” says Jon. “That’s what makes the house interesting and fun.”

The 5,200-square-foot house is a subtle sculpture of two wedge-shaped forms connectedby a two-story bridge that floats above ground. “This structure is all about dynamic spaces anda place for social gathering,” says Snow, who designed the house around the big, open kitchenthat Jon’s wife, Terryl, specified. “I like open spaces, but nothing too massive,” she says. “Wewanted something streamlined and simple.”

A continuous flow of space begins at the two-story entry and moves through the main liv-ing area. “There is a lot of variation in the ceiling and rooflines that defines the spaces,” Snowsays. “Something changes all the time.” Because he worked with the natural shape of the land, the house has many levels separated by just a few steps.

Built along the contours of an aspen-covered hillside, the house is perfectly aligned withspectacular views of Telluride’s iconic Mt. Wilson. Snow designed a geometric series of win-dows, rather than great expanses of glass, to frame the scenery with picture-perfect precision.Whether oriented to far mountain peaks or close-up aspen groves, every room has a view.

Jon built the house to be low maintenance and energy efficient—“very clean and green,” hesays. Terryl selected the finishes, colors and furnishings with her discerning eye for contem-porary design. The sleek materials are compatible with the linear architecture—bamboo andconcrete flooring, a tile-and-steel fireplace, smooth wood beams, clean metal railings. The fur-niture has similar contemporary lines, and the colors are neutral and serene, with limited popsof color for emphasis. “We tried to pull in a European/Asian feel rather than a rustic moun-tain look,” says Jon. “This is a very soothing house.”

Although more refined than rugged, the architecture still speaks the ranching vernacular ofthe region, with a modern twist. “The exterior materials—stone walls, barnwood-type sidingand metal roofing—are consistent with the ranch look, but the subtly distorted geometry givesthe house a contemporary feeling,” says Snow. “My goal was to show that nothing else couldhave been built here. That’s what makes a custom home.”

Family Room Clerestory windows allow plenty ofsouthern light to filter inside the family room, brightening the space.A vivid orange leather sofa complements the golden aspen leavesseen outside, connecting the indoors and outdoors, while a glassexterior door offers a more literal connection. A striped rug pulls allthe colors of the room together and softens the sleek concrete floors.

COLOR CONCEPTS With a home as stylized as this one, color can make orbreak the clean, contemporary look. “I was tempted to do more color on the wallsbut held back,” says homeowner Terryl Dahl. “With a house this big and open, spaceneeds to flow from room to room and so do the colors.”

Contrast Terryl livened up neutral materials and soaring spaces with high contrast:ebony-stained kitchen cabinets and wood ceiling beams play off light bamboo floorsand natural spruce ceilings (opposite); a dark gray steel shaft and concrete tiles contrastwith pale tile on the fireplace. Terryl bridged this light/dark energized backdrop with freshgreen walls that flow from the kitchen through the dining and living rooms. In otherareas of the house, light tan walls blend seamlessly with the natural bamboo flooring.

Discipline A carefully edited selection of bright colors adds just enough pop—anorange leather sofa in the family room, multi-colored striped rugs, and green tiles inthe master bath. Pattern is kept to a minimum, and textures are smooth and sleek. ●

Master BathThe large master bath (below) is big and bright, with nature-inspired hues. A random patternof 4-inch Ann Sacks glass tiles in the shower imbues the room with fresh green color, whilebamboo cabinetry keeps things light and airy. The pewter-hued concrete floors have comfort-able radiant heating, ideal for chilly winter mornings, while chocolate-colored concrete coun-tertops add visual warmth. A perfectly positioned window bathes the vanities in natural lightand is aligned with the glass shower door. Plumbing fixtures by Kohler, Hansgrohe and Jason.
