storyistoldofagroupofprisonerswhoplottedtoescapefromprison.Onthedesignatedtimethey

scaledthetallprisonwall,eludingtheguardsandotherdeterrents.Aftersuccessfullyscalingover

theprisonwalltheyweredismayedtoseeasecondwall,justashighanddauntingasthefirstone.

Resignedbutdeterminedtobefree,theyscaledthe2ndwall.Gettingtotheothersideofthesecondwall,

they foundthattheprisonwas surroundedbythirdwall! This isridiculous!mutteredsomebut they

scaledoverthiswalltoo.Latertheyfoundoutthatmorewallssurroundedtheprison.Sooverandover,

theyclimbedmorewalls.

By noontime they scaled over the 9th wall. Exhausted, in pain, hungry, thirsty, and discouraged, they

crumbledlikeapitifulheaponthegroundastheystaredindisbeliefatthe10thwallloomingoverthem.

Miserably, theysat onthegroundandreevaluated their situation.Theyweighed in their dreamsasking

themselves and eachother if theirdreamof freedomwas realistic andwhether all the hardworkwas

worthit.Feelingdefeated,someoftheprisonersproposedabortingtheplanandreturningbacktoprison.

Letsreturntoprison.Wehaveourownspacethere!Wearerespectedthere!Wealsogetfedthree

mealsaday,onesuggested.(Translation:Ulitaoitotalmakakaonmansadtadidtoba!)

Weshouldjustacceptourfate,suggestedanother.(Translation:Unsaonman,maonamangyud

niatongswerte.Kapalaran.)

Icantdothis.Thisistoomuch!(Translation:Indigidakokasahosini!!!Dawmapatayakosini!)

Shortlyafter, adecisionwasmadeandconsensusreached. Themajoritydecidedto goback toprison

hopefullybeforetheirabsencewasnoticed.Combiningalltheirstrengthandresourcesinordertosurvive,

theyhelpedeachotherclimbovereachwalluntilfinallybynightfalltheywerebackinprison.Theywere

deadtiredbutverygratefultobebackhomeandsafeinfamiliarterritory,andjustintimefordinner!

However,notalltheprisonersreturned.Twooftheprisonersdeterminedthatfreedomwasworthfighting

for. They resolved that they would persevere nomatter what and would continue overcoming all the

hurdlesuntiltheywerefree,evenif itmeantscalingmorewalls.Handsblisteredandtornfromclimbing,

theirbodiesrackedwithpainandfatigue,theirstomachsgrowlinginhunger,theyclimbedoverthe10th

wallandgottotheothersideofthewall.And..Gasp!Buttherewasno11thwalltoclimb!Infrontof

themwasabeautifulmeadowandFREEDOM!Thetwoprisonersrushedintofreedomandlivedhappily

everafter!

Youcanlaughatthesillinessofthestory,butletusdrawafewparallelshere:Noticethat

Noneoftheprisonersknewtherewere10wallstoovercome.Theythoughttherewouldonlybe1.

Alldesiredtoescape;theywantedsomethingbetterinlife.

Alltooktheinitiativeandallworkedhardclimbingoverthewall.Theytooktherisks.

Afterthe9thwall,allwereexhaustedanddiscouraged.Theyquestionedtheirdecisions.

Manychoosetogiveup;theyendedupclimbinganother9wallsonthereturntrip.

Twochoosetopersevereandfoundfreedom.

Thesameistruewithlife.Thewallscanrepresenttrials,hardships,pain,illness,death,poverty,

brokenness,andotherunwantedcircumstances.Wedonotknowhowmanyhurdlesweeachmust

overcomebutweknowthatweeachhaveourshare.WecanchooseeitherbeENCOURAGEDknowingthat

victoryisnearandthatourGodisableorwecanchoosetobeoverwhelmedanddefeated.Wecanchoose

tokeepoureyesandthoughtsfocusedonthepainorwecanchoosetoacknowledgethatthepaindoes

existbuttokeepoureyesonJesuswhohasovercomeALLforus.Thechoiceisours.

SideNote:IsntitinterestingthatwhenothersgothroughtryingsituationsitiseasytosayIllpray

foryouoryoucandoit!Suchsufferersareoftencruellyslappedbywell-meaningfriendswhogive

themlameclichslikethatsjustasmallproblem!orYoushouldhavemorefaith!orAhwell,

thisisGodswill.Ironically,whenthesameproblemhitsclosetohome,youfeelyourworldshatter

anditnolongerbecomesasmallproblem.Justanobservation

InMVC,fulltimeworkingstudentsscalethewallsofhardshipandproblemsdaily,theirjourneyfraught

withchallenges.Manyquitalongtheway,perhaps,liketheprisonersinthestory,sayingtothemselves,

Ulitaoitotalmakakaonmansadtadidtoba!orUnsaonman,maonamangyudniatongswerte.Or

Indigidakokasahosini!Dawmapataynakosini!Tamana!Butothersprevailedandarevictorious.

ThisweekCyberflashesispleasedtobringtoyouour

Inthisissue,formerworkingstudentsfromMVCsharetheirtestimony.Asyoureadthisissue,itisour

prayerthatyouwillbeblessed,thatyouwilltakeamomenttoliftyoureyesawayfromwhatburdensyou,

andturnyoureyesonJesus.Wewouldliketoencourageyou,toremindyouthatredemptiondraweth

nigh!Whoknowsthismightbethe10thwallyouarescaling?Perhapsafterthiswall,freedomand

victoryawaits.Whoknows!Butonethingissure:nomatterhowmanywallsyouscaletoreachyourgoals

ortoresolveyourproblemsorpain,JesuspromisedthatHewillbewithYOUalwaysevenuntiltheendoftime.Yes,thatmeansevenwhenyouarescalingwalls.

Alsointhisissue,youwillreadofpeoplewhoarecurrentlyscalingonetoomanyprisonwalls.Tothese

individuals,wewishtotellyouthatliterally,mayMVCiansprayforyoucontinuallybecauseitisour

privilegetodoso.Youarelovedbymany,butJesuslovesyouMORE!

neofmyfavoriteimagesofchildhoodthatIwouldliketopreserve

a snapshotofinmymind istheimageofachildstandinginthe

handofa father'soutstretched arm. See an imageof joy, trust,

amazement,andpridesharedbybothfatherandchild.

AsachildIdonotrecalleverhavingtheexperienceofstandingonthehand

ofmy father'soutstretchedarm. I sometimeswonderhow itwould feel to

havethatexhilarating feelingandtoknowthat Iamsafeandsecure inmy

father's strong arm. But as a grown-up and as a mother I have always

observed fathers, including my husband and my brothers, enjoy that

experienceofraisinga little childintotheairwhilethechildstandsonthe

palmoftheirhand.Cometothinkofit,Idonotrememberseeinganymotherdoingthat.Itseemstomethatthisisjustlikea"father-childthing".

Iobservedfathersenjoyingthisexperience.Itseemslikeanimportantpartoffatherhoodofbuildinga

relationshipoftrustbetweenafatherandchild.

Whenmysonswereinfantsandjustlearningtostandandbalance,Irememberthemstandingintheir

fathers hand. Initially they seemed hesitant, almost fearful. Gradually they developed trust and

confidenceastheirdadheldthemuphigh.Soonitbecameaspecialmomentsharedbetweenfatherand

child.Ibelievethateverysinglelovingfatherwouldliketohavethatexperiencewithhischild!

MythoughtsturntoourHeavenlyFather.TheCreator,whoplacedthedesireineveryearthlyfather's

heart to bond with their children, yearns for us to bond deeply with Him and to develop a deep

relationshipofloveandtrust.OhowIlongtohavethatexperiencewithmyHeavenlyFather:tostand

onHis"mightyhand"safeandsecurefromallalarms".Icouldstretchoutmyarmsinfreedom,without

fear or hesitancy! As He would carry me to see the whole universe standing on the hand of His

outstretchedarm,IwouldliketofeelthegentlebreezeofHisbreathuponme.Iwouldliketotouchand

feelthefluffycloudsinmyhand!ThiswouldbeaspecialmomentsharedbetweenmeandmyHeavenly

Father.IknowIcouldtrustHis"mightyandrighteousrighthand".TheBibletellsusofGod'smighty

hand,especiallyinthebookofDeuteronomy.Ithinkthatinheaventherewouldbealineofchildren

whowouldliketohavearideonthehandofourHeavenlyFatherespeciallythosechildrenwhodidnot

havethechancetoexperiencetheirearthlyfather'slove.Theywillnotbedisappointed.Theywillhavea

rideofalifetime.Forsure,Iwouldbeonthatline.Noneedtorush.EachonewillhaveherorhisturnbecausewewillbespendingeternitywithHim.Itisawesome!

"Fearthounot;forIamwiththee:benotdismayed;forIamthyGod:Iwillstrengthenthee;yea,Iwill

helpthee;yea,Iwillupholdtheewiththerighthandofmyrighteousness.'Isaiah41:10.

herewere16ofusinthefamily.Mymotherwasmyfathers3rdwife.Theirunionbroughttwomore

daughtersandthreemoresonsintothefamily.Iwas5yearsoldwhenmymotherdied.Aftermy

motherdied,myfathermarriedhis4thwifeandlaterhis5thwife.

Myfatherhadahardtimeraisinghisyoungchildren.Fortunately,Ihadanolderhalf-sisterwhowasan

adultandwhotookinterestinme.SheworkedattheDelMonteplantationandshebroughtmetolive

withheratCampPhillipsatDelMonte,Bukidnon.

IearnedmyhighschooleducationfromtheHolyCrossHighSchoolatCampPhillips,aRomanCatholic

schoolrunbytheReligiousSistersofMercy(RSM).AtthelibrarythereIfoundabookwhichcontaineda

compilation of colleges and universities in the Philippines. As I read the page aboutMountain View

College,Ilearnedthattheyacceptedworkingstudents!IwasimmediatelyintriguedbecauseIwasalsoa

workingstudentallthroughouthighschool.

SoIwenttoMVC.IworkedattheSandandGravelDepartmentassecretaryunderthesupervisionofthe

lateMr.JosueDumanon.WecreatedhollowblocksfortheconstructionofbuildingsandhousesatMVC

andalsosoldtooutsiders.Twoofmyoldersisterswerepleased.TheywereacquaintedwithSeventh-day

AdventistshavinglivedatthehomeofDr.RemelitoTabingoinOzamizCityandbothhadlaterjoinedtheSDAchurchmakingthemthefirstAdventistsinthefamily.

ThingswerenotalwayseasybutGodisgood.Therewereproblemsaboutmyfinancessomyfosterdad,

KeesVanderWateren,cametothePhilippinesandtoMVConedaytosettleit.Healsokeptintouchwith

methroughouttheyears,encouragingmeandhelpingineverywaypossible.Igraduatedintheearly90s

withadegreeinBachelorofScienceinAccountancy.ThroughthisjourneyIlearnedthatbeingpoorisnot

ahindrancetosuccessandthatdetermination+prayers=success.

attendedanSDAchurchschoolformyprimaryeducation.Atmymothersinsistenceoncontinuingmy

studiesinanSDAsetting,IstartedhighschoolatWesternMindanaoAcademy.Beforemyfreshman

yearwasevenover,itgrewtoodifficultformyparentstopayforschool.See,Iwasinafamilywithnine

children.Moneywasverytight.WhenmyfatheraskedmetotakeayearoutofschoolsothatIcouldhelphimonthefarm,Ifeltthatmydutyastheeldestsonwastocomply.Butthatoneyearsoonturnedinto

three.

Atonetimeduringafamilyreunion,oneofmyunclesexclaimed,Patulikougutrokonmakatapusughigh

schoolningbata!WhenIheardthosewords,Irealizedthatmaybeitwouldbeimpossibleformeto

completehighschool.Moneywasstilltightandtherewasmuchworktobedoneonthefarm.

ButmyuncleswordsreverberatedinmymindandImadethedecisiontoprovethatIcouldfinishhigh

school.Afterthreeyearsoutofschool,IdecidedtogobackandfinishwhatIhadstarted.Oneofmy

worrieswasthatallmyclassmateswouldbemuchyoungerthanme.ButIcomfortedmyselfwiththe

knowledgethatthesekidsdidntknowmeanyway.

Thefollowingthreeyearsofhighschoolwasnoeasierthanmythreeyearsworkingonthefarm.I

rememberFridayafternoonswhenIhadtohikehometoSicpaofromtheschool,adistanceofabout10

kilometers.IalsorememberthatthehikebacktoschoolwasevenmorechallengingasIwouldusuallycarry

withmeaweekssupplyoffoodformyselflikerice,eggplants,squash,ampalaya,andothervegetables

fromourgarden.IremembergettingkickedoutoftheexamsfromtimetotimebecauseIdidnthavethe

moneytopayfortuitionhenceIwouldnotgetanexampass.

ThingsgotsignificantlybetterwhentheAcademyofferedustheoptiontoworkattheirfarminorderforus

toearnfundsforouttuitionfees.Iwasthrilledfortheopportunitytofarmaonehectarericefield!ThefarmingskillsIlearnedgrowinguppaidcertainlyhelpedpayformyhighschooleducation.

Asayoungboy,IheardmanygreatthingsaboutMountainViewCollege,afterall,mostofmyelementary

schoolteachersgraduatedfromMVC.Howeverbackthen,Ialwaysthoughtitwouldbeimpossibleforme

tostudyatMVCbecausemyparentscouldevenbarelyaffordmysecondaryeducation.

FinallyonmysenioryearatWesternMindanaoAcademy,myclassmatesandIhadanopportunitytosee

MVCforourselvesthroughtheVisitingSeniorsprogram.IwasimpressedwithwhatIsawand

experienced.Tome,theSchoolofLightseemedlikeheaven.AtthatpointImadetheresolutionto

graduatefromMVConeday.

Finallyin1981Igraduatedfromhighschool.Iwasthrilled.TomethismeantIhadovercomeonegreat

hurdle.ButIalsoworriedaboutwhatIshoulddonext.Whatwouldmynextmovebeintermsofmy

education?WouldIevenbeabletogofurtherinschooling?Thesequestionsanddoubtswereeasedbymy

highschoolPrincipal,thelateMr.ErnieEbanezwhoremindedmethatIhadscholarshipsforgraduating

valedictorianandhavingthehighestscoreintheNCEE(NationalCollegeEntranceExaminations).Healso

remindedmethatIcouldjustaseasilyworkformyowneducationatMVCasIhadattheAcademy.This

wasexactlythemotivationIneeded.IsentmyapplicationtoMVC,indicatingmyinteresttoenrollasa

workingstudent.TheDeanofStudentsatMVCatthattime(whohappenedtobemyunclethoughIhad

notyetmethim)respondedtomyapplicationstatingthatfirstyearstudentsarenotallowedtoworkfull

time.

DeterminedtostudyatMVC,IfellonmykneesandaskedGodtohelpmefindthenecessaryfunds.Iwent

toPagadianCityasastudentcolporteurandcanvasseduntilIwasabletoraisetheP920neededforthe

entrancefeeplusalittlebitmoretopayformybusfaretoMVC.

Withmybelongingsinmymaleta(suitcase)andasmallcardboardbox,IleftmylittlebarangayofSicpao

forMVConeearlymorning.Thejourneywasarduous.ThebusIwason,alongwithmanyothervehicles,

gotstrandedbecauseofalandslide.Thestrandedvehiclesformedalongline.Thetravelersonmybus

weretoldthattherewouldbeanotherbuswaitingforusontheothersideofthemountainbutthatwe

wouldhavetowalktogetthere.

AfewlocalsofferedtocarrysomeofourluggageforafeebutsinceIonlyhadenoughmoneyformy

entrancefeetotheschool,Ioptedtocarrymyownluggageaswehikedoverthemuddyterrainacrossthe

othersideofthemountain.Forthenexttwohoursorso,Icarriedmytwopiecesofluggageastherain

poureddownonusintorrents.IdontremembermuchafterthatexceptthatIarrivedinMVCbefore

midnight.

Thenextday,Iwasenrolledforthefirstsemesterwithanacademicloadof21units.KnowingthatIwould

needtohaveabitmoremoneythanP920topayforthosecreditsaswellaspayforfoodandboard,I

appliedforworkalloverthecampus.However,Icouldnotfindajobasmostdepartmentswerefull.I

prayedaskingGodforhelp.IalsoaskedifHewouldprovideformeajobthatwouldallowmetoattendmy

classesandreporttoworkbetweenclasses.Ifiguredthiswouldallowmetoearnmorehoursofwork

credit.AndGodwasgood!AteLoids(Solis?)providedmethechancetoworkintheNurserydepartment.

TheworkwasnotaproblemasIlovedworkingwithplants.Inthattime,wepropagatedrosesthrough

buddingtobearflowersofdifferentcolorsandvarieties,somethingIenjoyedverymuch.Wealso

propagatedandplantedrubbertreesfromKisalomtoAnasagandallthewaytoLilingayon.Ispentevery

momentIcouldspareoutsideofclasstoworkinordertopayoffmyschoolbills.AlltheworkIdidthatsemesterresultedinacreditinmyaccountthatallowedmetoenrollforthesecondsemester.

DuringthatfirstsemesterinMVC,Idiscoveredthataccountingandnumberswerefun.Isoughtthehelpof

seniorswhenIdidntknowwhatwasgoingoninAccounting1andIstudiedeverythingdiligently.Before

thesemesterwasfinished,IknewIhadacedthecourseasIhadperfectedallbutoneofmyquizzesand

exams.

MysecondsemesterinMVCbroughtmoreblessings.IsawavacancyannouncedattheBusinessOfficeand

IappliedforthejobasIhadbecomefriendswiththeseniorswhoalsoworkedthere.SinceIhadagood

gradeinBookkeeping,Igotthejob.Myfirstassignmentwastocomputestudentslaborreports.Ididthe

jobwellandthefollowingsemesterIwasallowedbiggerresponsibilities:IgottodojournalentriesandhandlethestudentledgerwhichwecallCollegeIII.Iwasalsosoblessedtobeabletohaveajobthat

allowedmetopayformyeducationajobthatallowedmetoapplyeverythingIwaslearninginthe

classroom.

OnmythirdsemesteratMVC,Ionceagainhadafullacademicloadwith21.5units.Oneday,Mr.Enrique

RamasaskedifIwouldbeabletogotoCagayandeOrocitytopurchasesupplies.EventhoughIknewI

shouldbeinclassespeciallywithmyfullload,Iagreedtodothejob.Weleftthecampusaftersunsetthat

MondayandarrivedattheSouthPhilippineUnionMissioncompoundinCarmenHillsbeforemidnight.For

twodayswepurchasedsuppliesforthecafeteria,dormitories,andconstructionprojects,loadingtheblue

tenwheelerswithsupplies.Thisbeganmyworkasthecollegepurchaser.Iwouldtraveltheroutebetween

MVCandCagayandeOroCityroutinelyformorethan4years.

EventhoughIwasaworkingstudent,Iexperiencednew

and/orimportantthingsnotusuallyexperiencedbymostfull

timers.Idistinctlyremembermyfirstplaneridewhich

happenedatMVC.Mr.EnriqueEkingRamasandChief

LemuelMantuaaskedmeonedaytoaccompanyMr.Don

ChristensentoCagayandeOro.Thistime,however,Iwould

notberidinginatenwheelertruck.Iwouldbeflyingina

CessnaplanewithMr.Christensen!IremembermycolleaguesattheBusinessOfficecheeringmeonasI

preparedfortheplaneride.IrememberthatflighttoCagayandeOro.Imademanyquickprayers

especiallyastheplanewoulddiveduringtheairpocketsaboveMt.Kitanglad.AsIwasgettingintothe

Cessna,IalsorememberedtellingGodwhenIwasmuchyoungerandaplanepassedoverheadwhileIwas

plowingourricefieldbackhome.Isaid,Lord,IwouldbehappytodieaslongasIhaveflowninanairplane

first.

student,mydriversarethepresidentandtheacademicdean?

Onedayin1983,IwasissuedcashofP140,000tousetopurchasesuppliesfortheschool.Thiswasthe

largestamountofmoneyIhadeverseenincash.ButthenIrealizedthatthepurchaseorderthatwas

authorizedandsignedbytheofficewasmorethanP300,000.WhenIaskedSirEkingRamasaboutit,he

toldme,Jun,justprioritizethepriorities.Thiswasnotaneasytaskasalmostallpurchaseorderswere

markedasprioritybytherequestingdepartmentheads.ButSirEkingtrustedmetomakethenecessarydecisions.AndasIworkedattheBusinessOffice,Idevelopedconfidence,responsibility,andaccountability

becauseofSirEkingRamastrustinme.Anothermanwhosupportedandguidedmethroughtheworkis

ChiefLemuelMantua.Iowemanythankstothesetwogreatmen.

InOctoberof1986,morethanfiveyearsafterIhadpaidmyfirstandlastpaymenttoMVCofP920,I

presentedmyproudparentswiththeMagnaCumLaudemedalIhadreceivedfromtheSchoolofLight.

Still,thosewordsfrommyuncleechoedinmyhead.SoIenrolledintheMastersinBusinessManagement

programatSanJoseRecoletos,CebuCity,whileIworkedasthechurchAuditorandTrustServicesDirector

atCentralVisayanConference.SevenyearsafterIgraduatedfromMVC,theCPAexamswereoffered

withoutaSabbathschedule.IdecidedtotakeitandpraiseGodIpassedtheCPAboardexamsinOctober

1993.Stillachingtoachievemore,IenrolledintheDoctoralprogramoftheNotreDameUniversityofDadiangas.In2006,whileservingwithmyfamilyasmissionariesattheAdventistUniversityofHaiti,I

defendedmydissertation.

Lookingback,IamthankfultothemanypeopleandtoMVC.ThevaluesIlearnedasastudentworkerat

MVCpushedmetoachieveasmuchasIcould.

n May 6, 1967 I arrived at Mountain View College. My first meal on campus consisted of

"Mais Versus Camote". Sometimes wewere served bulgur, corn, sweet potato tops (farmers

delight),etc.OhhowIlearnedtolovethissimplefare!

Onmyfirstsemesteroncampus,IdidnothaveenoughmoneytoenrollforclassessoIworkedfulltimeat

thecafeteria.Itwastoughwakingupmanyhoursbeforedaybreakeachmorningeveryday!Sometimeswe

wereassignedtoworkatTheRampsscrubbingandflushingitswoodenfloorswithwaterlongbeforethe

studentswokeupandrushedtothecafeteriaforbreakfast. Sometimeswewereassignedtoworkatthe

cafeteria.Sometimeswewereassignedtoworkatthefoodfactory.

Tobemoreeffectiveatourjobsandtomakeitlesslaborintensiveforusworkingstudents,wewould

prepareforeachschooldaythenightpriorto.Forexample,atthecafeteriawecleanedandreadiedallthe

trays,thediningroom,andthepotsandpans,thenightbeforeinpreparationforthenextday.Itwasvery

lateatnightwhenwefinallyreturnedtoourrespectivedormitories,onlytogetupagainandreportbackto

work before thecrackof dawn. For six (6) years inMVC, this wasmy schedule. Iwouldwork at the

cafeteriafirstthinginthemorning;gotoschoolduringtheday,andreturntoworkintheafternoonsuntil

evening.Ididnotmind.Iwashappy.IhadgoalsinlifeandIknewthiswasawaytoachievethosegoals.I

also promised myself that I would graduate from college before I would go home to my province in

Odiongan,Romblon.AndGodhasbeensogood!

ThereweretimeswhenIhadnothingformypersonalneeds,notoiletries.Butthatdidnotmakemesad.

Instead, I would gather all the scraps of soap that I could find from the bathrooms, scraps that other

studentshadleftorhadthrownaway.Initiatively,Icombinedthesescrapsofsoapintosmallballs.This

servedasmybathsoapandlaundrysoap.SometimesIwouldgetlucky:friendswouldgivemesoapformy

birthdayorforChristmas.

HaveyouhadMVCcrackers?Yes,thedukotfromMVCscafeteria!Thishardenedriceatthebottomof

thepan,oftendiscardedaway,wasespeciallydeliciouswhenoilandsaltwassprinkledonit.Weenjoyed

thistreat.Notonlydideatingdukothelpwardoffourhungerpangs,ithelpedmakeourmealticketslast

longer. Andwhenenjoyedwithfriends,well, itjustreallymade itmorememorableand sweet! These

werethespicesinourlifeasfulltimeworkingstudentsinMVC.

IalsogottoworkatthefoodfactoryatMVCwheresoyamilk,cinnamonbread,cookies,andothergoodies,

wereabundantlyavailable.Our supervisorwouldallowusto tastethegoodieswebakedaslongaswe

deductedthecostfromourlaborreport.

OnSabbaths,thecafeteriaservedspecialitemsforall.UnderthesupervisionofMissRallos,weservedrice

insteadofcorn.Wewouldhavebread,cakes,andicecream.Productsthatwemadeatthefoodfactory

wereservedlikevegemeat,tofu(tokwa),andavarietyofspecialdishesthatMissRallosmadelikeadobo

gluten.

Workinginthecafeteria,thefoodfactory,orwhereverIgotassigned,wasgreatforme.NotonlydidIlearn

newskillswhichIfoundveryusefulinlifebutIalsoearnedsomanyhoursworkcreditandpayforallmy

schoolfees.AftersixyearsIgraduated.

choicewastoenrollasaworkingstudent.

MyworkexperienceatMVCvariedtremendously.Iworkedfulltimeatthecafeteria,musicdepartment,

library,garden,laundrydepartmentandthedormitoryasassistantdean.Oneofthebestplacesforafull-

timertoworkwastheMusicDepartment,inmyopinion.Icouldenjoysingingandhearingbeautifulmusic.

On the month of March we were all busy completing our requirements to qualify for the

upcomingPinningandStripingCeremonyandourGraduationExercises.TheNursingBoardExamwasnot

partofourvocabularyforthetimebeing.Butthenunexpectednewsarrived:wewereinformedthatour

boardexamwasrescheduledforJune2and3,2013.WeweresupposedtohaveourexamonDecember

2013, the schedulewhere theresnoSabbath.But itnowwasmovedto June.Our peacefuldayswere

disturbed,itsalreadyMarchandwehaventstartedwithourreviewyet.Butdespitethestartlingnews,we

remainedpositiveandarecomfortedbelievingthatGodhasapurposeforeverythingthathappensunder

thesun.

Wetookabreakforaweekaftergraduationbeforestartingourin-housereview.April1wasthefirstdayof

ourreviewandwewerewelcomedbyanexam!Notonlyone,butthreeexamswhichdrainedourbrains

andleftusexhausted.Ourscheduleforthereviewwasreallyhectic:SundaystoFridays,from8AMto5PM

eachday,and noholidays. Sometimeswedid someovertime. For someofus, itwas torture,not only

mentally but also physically. Some had many sleepless nights reviewing.Many got sick which made it

harderforthemtoconcentrate.Butthisdidnotstopusfromfightingthisbattle.Perseverancewasamajor

key.

Therewere timeswhenwegot discouraged. Somebecame disheartened afterseeing the scores inour

mockexams.Tearswereshed.ManystartedtolosehopeofmakingitattherealBoardExams.Buteach

timewestartedtofeelthisway,wewerealwaysboostedupbythemessagesthatPastorSilverioReynokept sharingwith us. Wewere reallyblessed becauseweare not only nurturedacademicallybut also

spiritually.Eachdaywehadmorningworship inthe Jubilee Park and afternoonworship rightafterour

reviewsession.Eachmessageencouragedustogoonandfacethebattlesetbeforeus.Inadditiontothat,

wealsohadmorningdevotionalsbeforestartingourreview.Thespeakersareselectedfromtheamong

reviewees.

EachSabbathPastorReynoledusinfastingandpraying,aspecialtimewithGodthathasbeenconsistently

practicedeachyearattheMVCSchoolofNursingjustbeforetheBoardExams.Afterchurch,insteadof

headingfor thecafeteria for lunchmyclassmatesandI remainedat theMVCAlumniChurch tostudya

chapterofEllenWhitesbook,TheDesireofAges.Wediscussedthechapterandsharedoutinsightswitheachother.Andweprayedtogether.

Justbeforeourreviewwascompleted,anunexpectedthinghappened.Someofmyclassmatescamedown

withchickenpoxsotheywerenotabletoattendsomeofthesessions.Butthatdidnotstopthemfrom

reviewingandcontinuingthefight.Becausetheresultsofourmockexamsweresonotgood,manyofus

feltthatwewerenotreadytotaketheactualBoardExams.Butgivingupwasneveranoption.Wewere

determinedtopersevereandfinishthebattlebeforeus.

Our2monthsofreviewpassedbyquickly.Junecame.Wewereallanxious.Somecouldnotsleepwellat

nightwhilesomeoverslept.Manyovercompensated.

FinallythedaycamewhenwewereallbetransportedtoCagayandeOroCitywheretheexamswereto

takeplace.WestayedattheSPUCcompound.WespentourSabbathintheirchurchandtheyprayedfor

us.Weweresotouched.Wethankthemforthat.

Sundayfinallycame.Youcantimaginethemixedemotionsthatwehad.Wehadtofocusandnotletour

nervousnessconquerus.WekeptbeingremindedofPastorReynosencouragementtoTrustintheLord

withallthineheart,andleannotonyourownunderstanding;inallyourwaysacknowledgeHim,andHe

shalldirectthypaths.(Proverbs3:5-6)

DuringthetwodaysthatwetookourBoardExams,PastorReyno,andourteachersMrs.Reyno,Maam

RosemarieCacho,andMaamNenetteRosalitaaccompaniedus.Theirpresencegaveusemotionalsupport

knowingthattheycared.Beforeeachexamstarted,weallprayedtogetherandagain,wewouldreceive

words of encouragement and faith. Dr. & Mrs. Garilva also came and prayed for us. We really felt

encouragedandinspiredeverytimesomeoneprayedforus.

It is not the empty cup that we have difficulty in carrying; it is the cup full to the brim that must be

carefully balanced. Affliction and adversity may cause sorrow, but it is prosperity that is mostdangerous to spiritual life. Unless the human subject is in constant submission to the will of God,

unless he is sanctified by the truth, prosperity will surely arouse the natural inclination to

presumption.

In the Valley of humiliarion, where men depend on God to teach them and to guide their every step,

there is comparative safety. But the men who stand, as it were, on the lofty pinnacle, and who,because of their position, are supposed to possess great wisdom these are in gravest peril. Unless
