BIG 12 STANDINGS

• West Virginia opened its 2019 season at the Delaware Classic on Aug. 30-31, at the Bob Carpenter Center, in Newark, Delaware.

• The Mountaineers claimed a 3-1 season-opening win over host Delaware on Friday. WVU concluded the two-day tournament with a pair of sweeps on Saturday, defeating Coppin State and Binghamton to win the 2019 Delaware Classic tournament title.

• Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, as well as the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 3, while sophomores Lacey Zerwas and Kristina Jordan earned all-tournament team honors for their efforts.

• Following a 3-0 season-opening weekend, the Mountaineers started their season with three straight wins for the first time under coach Reed Sunahara.

• The Mountaineers have not played on the West Coast since 2016, when they went 2-1 at the Cal Classic hosted by the University of California at Haas Pavilion, in Berkeley, California.

• A pair of Mountaineers boast ties to California, as senior outside hitter

Katelyn Evans and Jordan are natives of the Golden State. Evans hails from Palmdale and attended Highland High, while Jordan is from San Diego and played for Liberty Charter High. In addition, Sunahara played for UCLA and started his coaching career with the Bruins.

• While in San Diego, WVU will face Arkansas, San Diego State and Arizona for the first time in program history.

• Four Mountaineers rank in the top 5 of four Big 12 categories to start the season: Zerwas ranks second with 10.80 assists per set, while junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting leads the team with 5.50 digs per set to also rank second in the league. Lynch ranks fifth with a .381 hitting percentage, and Jordan served up a quintet of aces (0.56 per set) to also rank fifth in the conference.

• Redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams, a transfer from Xavier, earned her first career start for the Mountaineers last weekend, while freshman Natalie Winter made her collegiate debut vs. Delaware.

• As a team, West Virginia is hitting .271 and holding its opponents to a .127 clip.

THE ROAD TO 700The Mountaineers recorded their 700th win in program history at Delaware on Aug. 30. Fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara also collected his 375th career victory. West Virginia currently holds a 702-742 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974. Fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara owns a 52-74 record at WVU, bringing the program to new heights in his first four seasons. The 2017 campaign marked the first time in 26 years the Mountaineers made the postseason, with WVU reaching the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Semifinals.

The Mountaineers claimed a 3-1 season-opening win over host Delaware on Friday. WVU concluded the two-day tournament with a pair of sweeps on Saturday, defeating Coppin State and Binghamton to win the 2019 Delaware Classic tournament title. SCOUTING THE RAZORBACKSArkansas racked up three wins at the Arkansas Classic last weekend, sweeping Northwestern State and Little Rock on Friday and claiming a five-set victory over Montana State on Saturday. Freshman Jillian Gillen and senior Rachel Rippee were selected to the all-tournament team after helping lead the Razorbacks to a tournament title. Gillen also was named the tournament’s MVP, as well as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week. The outside hitter led the team with 5.00 points per set, as well as 4.36 kills per set and 2.36 digs per set, in the Razorbacks’ season-opening weekend.

SCOUTING THE AZTECS The Aztecs notched a 2-1 showing in their first weekend of play, as redshirt sophomore Camryn Machado was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week following her performances at the Florida Gulf Coast Homewood Suites Fort Myers Classic. SDSU captured a pair of sweeps on Friday before dropping the championship match to host FGCU on

Saturday. As a team, San Diego State is averaging 13.5 kills per set, as well 2.5 blocks per set.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATSThe Wildcats opened their 2019 season with a pair of sweeps before falling in five sets to Samford in the Cactus Classic, held at the McKale Memorial Center, in Tucson, Arizona. As a team, Arizona is hitting .255 and holding its opponents to a .185 clip. Junior outside hitter Paige Whipple paves the way with 2.19 kills per set, while sophomore middle blocker Zyonna Fellows leads the team’s blocking efforts with 1.36 per set.

UP NEXTWest Virginia will head to the University of Hawai’i for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge on Sept. 12-14 in Honolulu. WVU opens play against Hawai’i, a 2018 NCAA-qualifying team, on Sept. 12, followed by a match against UCLA on Sept. 13. The squad concludes play on Sept. 14, as it takes on Utah Valley, a 2018 NIVC-qualifying team, before heading back to Morgantown for its final tournament of the season. Of note, WVU will face all three teams in Hawai’i for the first time in program

history. Sunahara, a native of Hilo, Hawai’i, was a two-time All-American and three-time NCAA Champion at UCLA.

CHALLENGING 2019 SLATEWVU will play five matches against opponents who qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, and a pair of contests against teams who received bids to the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), including the NIVC Champion Iowa State. Of note, Texas is currently ranked at No. 3 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll.

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHTWVU will play a pair of Big 12 matches on ESPNU this fall. West Virginia’s match against Texas Tech on Wednesday, Sept. 25, will air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. ET. The Mountaineers and the Red Raiders will meet for the 17th time overall and the 15th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. The all-time series is knotted at eight, with the two teams splitting the series in 2018. West Virginia won its most recent meeting, defeating Texas Tech in four sets on Oct. 24, 2018,

in Morgantown. Of note, WVU is 3-4 against TTU in Lubbock. Another trip to the Lonestar State will be televised, as the Mountaineers’ Nov. 3 contest at Texas will broadcast live on ESPNU starting at 1 p.m. ET. The first meeting between the two squads came in August of 2012 and was WVU’s first-ever Big 12 contest. The Longhorns are 14-0 in the series.

2019 PLAYERS TO WATCH

Lacey Zerwas – Zerwas, a sophomore setter from Phoenix, Arizona, earned a spot in the starting lineup midway through the year, playing in 96-of-112 sets last season. She led the team in assists, with 881, averaging 9.18 per set to rank sixth in the Big 12 Conference. Zerwas recorded double-digit assists in 27 matches, including nine 40-plus assist performances. She also finished second on the team in service aces (15) and third in digs (173). Zerwas will look to take control of the Mountaineer offense this season and is of three team captains. Alexa Hasting – With two years of experience under her belt, Hasting will run the floor defense this season. The Plain City, Ohio, native slid into the libero position midway through the year last season, averaging 3.21 digs per set as a sophomore. Hasting led WVU with 359 digs, reaching double-digits in 19 matches and posting a trio of 20-plus dig performances. She also was presented the team’s Defensive MVP Award at the end-of-the-year banquet. Kristina Jordan – Jordan, a sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter for the Mountaineers, looks to build off her freshman campaign, as she ranked inside the top five of three freshman season categories. She is second in block assists (93), tied for

second in total blocks (101) and ranks fifth in blocks per set with 0.94. She also finished fifth on the team in kills (164), averaging 1.53 per set, and hit above .300 10 times. Additionally, she led the squad with 24 service aces, averaging 0.22 per set to rank 10th in the Big 12.

NICE TO MEET YOUFreshman Natalie Winter comes to Morgantown from Katy, Texas, where she played for Amy Cataline at Seven Lakes High and Chuck Schneider at the Houston Juniors Volleyball Club. A 5-foot-9 defensive specialist, she is the program’s career leader in digs (1,531) and aces (168) and was a three-time first team all-district honoree. Winter led her team to four consecutive regional tournament appearances, including its first-ever Class 6A state final in 2017.
