Moura High We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, the Gangulu people. Term 2 Week 8 Important Dates It as been a very interesting week. Not just here at Moura State High, but across the globe. Im sure many of you have pondered and will continue to ponder on the range of discussions that have taken place. I would like to thank the parents who have been in contact with me after last week s newsletter. The feedback was very grateful and it has made for some good conversations with staff and students. There were some things that were raised that I wasnt aware of, however, I do feel that hearing from you can hopefully make a few changes or other plans in place. Headphone Usage The start of this week, I have asked that headphones are not to be used during class time. The exception is the classes who need them specifically for their subject. The reason behind this decision is that last week, we had a number of issues with our internet data. That is, being maxed out within the first 2 hours of school. The reason, students would log in to do their work, however, would source out the live streaming sites to listen to music or watch videos. The issue I have is that the research shows that if people are wanting to listen to music while studying, it should be classical. Listening to pop music or watching a movie or video clip, our thoughts are moved toward to those words being used, or the pumping music. The argument is to focus on the task; I ask the question of how do you sit an exam without music? Since the start of the week, the maxing out of our internet is still occurring but it is taking more time to get there. Lockdown & Fire Drill Last Friday our School was involved with our Lockdown practice and Fire Drill. We did these on the same day, straight after each other so students and staff could hear the different bells and of course, practice the requirements of these situations. Important points to remember during a Lockdown: Need to stay quiet. Need to stay out of sight, the best you can. The Fire Drill went well. It was great to witness the students following the instructions given to them by staff, students walking calmly and then waiting patiently for the all clear. Free Dress Day Information There is no Free Dress Day this Friday. I am aiming to put a schedule together, allowing you enough time to work in when they are on. There will also be more direction on what should be worn and what wont be allowed. I will say Thank you to all of you in supporting some of the requests I have put upon you from our Department. With hope, we can continue to work with these requests: If your child is unwell or sick, please let them stay at home. While it is colder weather, we do need to make sure the students are warm. We do have a school uniform policy that we ask the students wear correctly. This does mean no hoodies. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL MOURA STATE Strive today to build tomorrow PO Box 224, Moura Qld 4718 4997 5888 4997 5800 Email ; [email protected] July M 13 First Day of Term 3 Moura High Student Council Meeting Monday June 15 June F 26 Last Day of Term 2 Term 1, Mr James Lye A word from the Principal Open both breaks Pre-Orders encouraged P&C Meeting Tuesday June 16 5:15pm High School Common Room All Welcome

Moura High We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, the Gangulu people.

Term 2 Week 8

Important Dates It as been a very interesting week. Not just here at Moura State High, but across the

globe. I’m sure many of you have pondered and will continue to ponder on the range of discussions that have taken place. I would like to thank the parents who have been in contact with me after last week’s newsletter. The feedback was very grateful and it has made for some good conversations with staff and students. There were some things that were raised that I wasn’t aware of, however, I do feel that hearing from you can hopefully make a few changes or other plans in place.

Important points to remember during a Lockdown:

Need to stay out of sight, the best you can. The Fire Drill went well. It was great to witness the students following the instructions given to them by staff, students walking calmly and then waiting patiently for the all clear.

Behaviour Expectations I spoke with students during the Virtual Assembly on Monday about what was posted in the newsletter around our School values and the document on Bullying and its definition. The really important reflection on these items is that we need to consider our language that we use. Sometimes it is very easy to jump straight to calling things bullying, when in fact it could be a one off of name calling. Still not great, as we know that name calling can lead to more serious issues. At times, it does get a little frustrating when speaking with students about these kind of behaviours. Usually it is that they know they are doing the wrong thing and when asked what their purpose is, it’s usually coming back to ‘we were just having a joke.’ It might be a joke for one or two but for the one being called that name, or being pushed into swearing at the others, it really isn’t funny. Please know that I do understand the feedback of ‘they are just kids’; yes, I agree, however, they also need to learn from these experiences to make choices. If the student is being spoken to on numerous occasions, they are not learning, they are trying to create some form of drama or game for themselves. This is not ok.

Respect, Responsibility and Integrity Our School values are very clear: Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. Last week I posed three questions based on these values. With hope, students have been able to consider them and rethink their actions. In the last couple of days, I have been walking from our School to the Primary School. On these walks I have noticed a couple of things:

1. We do have a number of students who do the right thing. They will walk together, talking about their day, however, they will slip out a few swear words, usually as adjectives. Being an English teacher, I would like to think that students could be more creative with their word choice. But I would also like to think that when they are walking in their school uniform, they would speak with more respect.

2. When heading closer to the Primary School, I was observing how the students would respect the parents and

students from the Primary School walking to their own vehicles. I was a little disappointed to witness our students completely ignore the parents and expected that they would move for them. That little bit of respect of allowing the adult and their child walk on the footpath is something that has been forgotten.

3. Students who were using their scooters on the footpath, not considering the others on the path and trying to do

some tricks. This could go wrong and an innocent walker could become a victim of a scooter accident. The worst thing I saw was some of the students walking on the road, expecting the car to wait for them.

I know this sounds all negative. I will say that seeing the stream of our Moura High uniform walking the path was an absolutely great sight to see. Moura High Alumni I would love to hear from the Moura High Alumni. That is any past students from Moura High, from any decade, any era, as I would like to start this group and getting some stories of what it was like at school and a ‘where are you now?’ update. Please feel free to contact the Office or send me an email. I am very much looking forward to hearing these stories. I have heard from a few families already, so will aim to put these stories together to share. If you do have any feedback you would like to pass on, please feel free to contact me at the School.

Student Council News

At Mondays meeting the Student Council discussed having ‘Free Dress Fridays,’ every three weeks raising funds to donate to different charity organisations. The council also discussed having the student rock band perform on Fridays during lunch on occasion. The student Council would like to push our ‘don’t trash it, cash it,’ campaign and urge all students to utilise our recycle bins.

Wellbeing Program Miss Lynn Paap H.O.D. Middle Years

Bullying, Resilience and Mindful Coping During this week’s Wellbeing lessons students investigate the concepts of resilience and mindful coping, pertaining to instances of bullying. Resilience seems to be the “in” word people in education use to describe a quality they want students to have. But it would be interesting, if many of them, actually know what it means to be resilient. The most common description people say, is being able to bounce back from adversity. But do they know what skills students need to possess to be able to bounce back? Studies have shown that there are seven key skills, which are essential to develop in both students and ourselves, to be resilient. They are:

Optimism and hope for the future – thinking positively when striving to achieve goals – develop through goal setting and growth mindsets.

Regulating emotions – controlling the intensity and duration of emotions – develop through wellbeing fitness challeng-es and strengths boosters.

Impulse control – resisting the urge to react on emotions – develop through mindfulness activities.

Flexibility of thinking – changing thinking for different situations – develop through habits of mind and thinking tools.

Empathy – accepting the needs and feeling of others – develop through acts of kindness and listening.

Self-belief – valuing yourself and your top strengths – develop through actioning character strengths

Building social-connectedness – feeling a sense of belonging – develop through active constructive responding.

Mr Curtin is already half way through his Brissie to the Bay Challenge, having completed an impressive 252km’s for the month on June. Mr Curtin has already raised a massive $2511.00 For Multiple sclerosis (MS) one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system. (MS) may affect the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve and affects more young people in Australia than any other chronic progressive neurological disease. Every dollar raised will have an immediate impact. Enabling people living with MS to access support services including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, counselling and symptom management. And, help to fund important research projects into better treatments and ultimately a cure for the disease If you want to support Mr Curtin please follow the link below: https://www.brissietothebay.com.au/fundraisers/robertcurtin (crtl&click)

Who doesn’t love a cupcake, especially when they look as good as this? The 7/8 Home Ec class finally created the cupcakes they have been planning this term. After trialling 2 different methods for making the cupcakes, the students chose one recipe, baked the cakes and then decorated them with a target clientele as the focus. The creativity exhibited was unbelievable, with some students displaying skills beyond expectations. All are to be commended for the effort they put into this assessment task, probably made easier as they were able to eat their finished products.
