2. System Requirements

Operating Systems

Please check to ensure you have at least the minimum specification before installing:

Windows: Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (32-bit or 64-bit).

Windows XP (32-bit only and requires Service pack 3).

Windows requires .NET Framework 4.0 or higher.

Recommend Windows 7 64-bit, SP1 or Vista 64-bit, SP2.

Recommend Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate editions.

Linux: Linux Red Hat Enterprise 5 and 6 (64-bit only).

Move may run on other distributions of Linux however, these have not been tested. For

optimal video performance with OpenGL when using an NVIDIA video card under Linux,

it is recommended that you use the accelerated drivers provided by NVIDIA on their

website www.nvidia.com.

Mac: OSX 10.7 and up (64-bit only). Using Move in a virtual machine (with Mac

OSX as guest) is not supported.

Graphics Card

Move is a graphics intensive application and takes advantage of modern hardware GPUs

in order to speed up 3D rendering. In some algorithmic operations Move also offloads

parallel operations to the GPU to deliver faster computational results. The more memory

on the graphics card the better Move will handle larger DEM and Image/Seismic data.

Hardware

The following list of is provided as a general guide only. If your system configuration is

different and you are unsure of its capability then please email us: [email protected]

with your system details for further information. The hardware requirements greatly

depend on the size of data sets you are using. If you are working with large data sets

and utilising Move applications simultaneously then we would strongly suggest the

following recommendations with a 64-bit OS. This will allow the applications to take

advantage of more than 4GB of memory if it is available.

Workstation/Desktop

For example, Dell Precision T7600/T5600/T3600;

Apple iMac, Apple Mac Pro.

Specification Recommended Minimum Recommended Ideal

CPU Single 2.0 GHz Dual core CPU

Using Remote Desktop

When connecting to a remote system using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services you

may experience issues when using larger models. This is due to limitations with the

software OpenGL driver that is used when using the remote connection. There are

several ways to work around such issues:

Use another remote display application that uses the hardware capabilities of the

host machine.

Start Move on the host machine BEFORE connecting to it. This requires physical

access to the host system.

Use the alternate software OpenGL drivers provided with Move. These are located

in the bin/mesa3d folder inside the location where Move was installed.

o Make sure Move is not running,

o Copy the dlls from bin/mesa3d into the bin directory (up one level),

o Start Move.

4. Move licensing

Please refer to the Move 2013.1 Licensing Guide which can be found on the release USB

package and in the Client section of www.mve.com.

5. MVE Data Link

If you plan to use 2DMove and 3DMove stand-alone standard applications instead of the

2D Kinematic Modelling and 3D Kinematic Modelling modules for Move, this will utilise

the data link (sometimes called Interoperability) and may require changes to root

privileges on Linux or administrator privileges on Windows.

The Data Link allows the same document to be shared between Move Core Application,

the 2DMove Standard Application and the 3DMove Standard Application. It is not

required to share a document between the Move Application and its modules. The link

employs a two-way communication between the source and target applications. Each of

the applications – Move, 2DMove Standard and 3DMove Standard hosts an HTTP server

that is used to accept incoming document requests and to transmit the document from

the source to the target application.

Each of the applications has been assigned the following port number ranges:

2DMove: 4600 - 4609

3DMove: 4610 - 4619

Move: 4620 - 4629

Each product Data Link server (part of each of the MVE products) will assign itself a port

within this range automatically by using the lowest available number within its specified

range. If there is an application running on one of the ports it will move up in the

available range until a free port is found.

As default, Move Core Application, 2DMove and 3DMove come supplied with the

embedded Data Link server enabled.

Each MVE product should launch and/or communicate with the other MVE products

without changing any settings. However, if using the Data Link as part of a secure,

firewalled or specialist environment then a Systems Administrator may wish to alter the

Data Link default settings prior to end-user use.

For a complete guide to all of the options available to the installer, please see the Help

Pages accessed from within the application.

Notes for Windows Only

If you are using Windows Service Pack 2/3 or Windows Vista, a Windows Security

Alert window may pop up on opening any of the Move Products asking: 'Do you want to

keep blocking this program?'

Page 15: Move2013.1.2 InstallationGuide

Midland Valley Move 2013.1 Installation Guide

13

The user should click on the Unblock button to use the MVE Data Link.

If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will require UAC elevated to administrator to

proceed. Move, 2DMove and 3DMove need to accept outside connections in order to

communicate with other MVE applications.

For more information see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875353

Notes for Linux Only

You may have to assign higher port-numbers and/or specifically setup your network

environment to allow the Data Link to function within a fire-walled setup. This is out-with

the scope of this document and will not affect most users using the Data Link within

normal boundaries.
