Tonight we conclude this series, learning from your favorite Disney/Pixar movies, with your #1 pick… The Incredibles! God wants you to be incredible…

I. Being Incredible Means Not Fitting In

a. Who Is Your Hero, Really? i. Ever wished you could have superpowers? Be a

superhero? Who is your hero (real life hero)? ii. Turn to 1 Corinthians 11 with me as we learn a little

something from this movie, this family, and God’s Word!

iii. Here’s the opening scene of this 2004 movie, showing the awesomeness of Mr. Incredible during the “glory days” as they are called…

Movie Clip = “The Incredibles – The Glory Days” (stop at 2:30)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lW4hTepKqQ

iv. Incredi-boy = studied all his moves, knew everything about him, wants to be just like Mr. Incredible…

v. Is that like you, wanting to be like Jesus? vi. What’s it mean to “imitate” someone? (Students

share, show an imitation of someone famous)

vii. The Bible teaches = Be imitators of Christ! 1. 1 Corinthians 11:1 = “And you should

imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” (NLT) viii. Who you want to be like (hero)… should be Jesus!!

b. Is Just Fitting In Ever Worth It? i. The premise of this movie is when “public opinion

turns against superheroes – also called "Supers" – due to collateral damage from their crime-fighting activities. After several lawsuits, they are forced into civilian relocation programs. Fifteen years later, Bob and Helen Parr, formerly known as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl, and their children Violet, Dash, and baby Jack-Jack live as a suburban family.” (Wikipedia.org)

ii. Trying to fit in, but it is just not easy, especially for Dash at school (whose power is super speed):

Movie Clip = “The Incredibles – After School” (Stop at 2:05)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZVPhUizo38

iii. Mom doesn’t want Dash to face “temptation” and encourages him to just “fit in” (like the whole family is trying to do now).

iv. He struggles with not feeling “special” at all! 1. You are special! (In a genuine way) We are

not supposed to fit in as Christians, we are not of this world!

2. “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.” (1 John 2:15, NLT)

3. Love this world or your Father? Relationships, possessions, popularity (in person or online), status… more important?

4. Be careful not to try to “fit in” to this world so much to where you leave God out…

c. Don’t Miss Your Opportunity! i. Mr. Incredible (Bob) is trying to fit in to this “normal”

life as well. Let’s see how he’s doing at Insura-care:

Movie Clip = “Mr. Incredible Vs. His Boss” (Stop at 2:21) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhfFoM1FfYc

ii. Ever feel like you are supposed to stand up and do

the right thing, even when it’s hard or not popular, means you might lose your job?

Page 2: Movies With A Message 2017 - Parts 1234albertvillefbc.church/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Movies...1. You are special! (In a genuine way) We are not supposed to fit in as Christians,

1. Warning = “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17, ESV)

2. If God gives you an opportunity to do the right thing… please don’t miss it (sin)!

II. Being Incredible Means Being Prepared

a. Get In Shape For The Battle i. Mr. Incredible is challenged to get back into the

“super” life and faces off with this robot called the Omnidroid, it’s a “learning robot”. Check it out…

Movie Clip = “Mr. Incredible Vs. The Omnidroid” (start at 0:24, stop at 2:53)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX5zflBuN30

ii. This robot learned and adapted during the battle. Just like our Enemy! “Learning Satan”!

1. Not omniscient, not all knowing, but he is a learning enemy… watches what you struggle with and learns to attack there more often:

iii. Spiritual warfare! = Ephesians 6:10-11 = “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” (NLT)

iv. Did you notice in this battle, Bob injures his back, realizes he is out of shape?

1. Another scene show him working out (lifting freight trains & things) to get back in shape. We must do the same to prepare for battle with our Enemy!

2. Philippians 2:12 = “as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling…” (NIV)

b. Where Real Power Comes From i. Mr. Incredible finds himself in trouble with a new

enemy (Syndrome), who turns out to be none other than his old wannabe, Buddy (Increbi-boy).

ii. The family finds out and comes to the rescue in their new suits, but is not sure they are up for this new “super” life together, especially shy Violet:

Movie Clip = “The Most Valuable Possession” (1:55) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpkuw3ztPQE

iii. Wise advise from mom = your identity is your most valuable possession (know who you are in Christ!)

1. But, what about this idea of hiding behind a mask (hold up mask)?

2. What are you hiding? From others? God? 3. 1 Samuel 16:7 = “People look at the

outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (NIV)

a. Can’t hide anything from God, just be real, take the “mask” off!

iv. Mom also reminds Violet that she has more power than she realizes, it’s in her “blood”…

1. Truth = You have more power than you realize too, it’s in your blood, the blood of Jesus (if He is your “Lord”):

v. “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11, ESV)

1. Wow! Now, that’s power!!

III. Being Incredible Means Living Unified a. It’s A Family Matter!

i. Speaking of power…right before this scene, Bob admits to Helen he doesn’t think he is “strong enough”… Helen replies, “if we work together, you won’t have to be”!

ii. The final battle scene (new Omnidroid is now in the city) requires all them fighting together, unified…

Movie Clip = “The Incredibles 2004 Battle An Out Of Control Robot” (4:23)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pVzi2wi-Dg

iii. Unified… like the church is supposed to be (we are a family of superheroes for Jesus!)

1. Ephesians 4:3-4 = “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.” (NLT)

iv. Are you unified with these people around you? This church? Ready to battle Satan? We need each other!

Side note: Incredibles 2 (June 15, 2018) = “Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) is left to care for

Jack-Jack while Helen (Elastigirl) is out saving the world.” (IMDB)

As our Disney/Pixar movies with a message continue tonight, we go futuristic as we meet a little robot on a BIG adventure. This 2008 movie called WALL-E.

Quiz: What does WALL-E stand for? (Pic on screen, Students answer)

I. A Grim-Looking Future

a. For Earth i. The year is 2805, the world is not doing well,

introducing WALL-E…

Movie Clip = “WALL-E Intro” (start at 0:29, stop at 2:07) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLx_7wEmwms

ii. He is all alone on the earth with the sole purpose of

cleaning it up this overwhelming mess! iii. WALL-E is a trash compactor, the only one of his

kind left we find out, his name stands for “Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class”

1. Do you think that’s possible… to end up with so much trash that earth is unlivable?

2. What about in our hearts? So much sin in our hearts… no place for God?

3. The psalmist David believed so: Psalm 36:1 = ‘Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all.” (NLT)

4. We all let sin into our heart daily (unconfessed sin will stick around, eventually filling you up with so much trash you miss God’s voice and will for you)!

a. “Garbage in, garbage out!” iv. WALL-E finds himself all alone, lonely, watching old

movies about love, longing for his own love! v. Then arrives another ship carrying EVE (“Eva”) (pic

on screen) 1. EVE = “Extraterrestrial Vegetation

Evaluator”… One mission: find plant life! vi. WALL-E falls in love, helps EVE find plant life and he

chases her (holding on to her ship) to humanity… b. For Humanity

i. We discover everyone has been evacuated by megacorporation Buy-N-Large on a giant star liner (the Axiom), enjoying life without even realizing it. WALL-E meets them all as he follows Eva…

Movie Clip = “Fitless Humans (WALL-E)” (3:25) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-kdRdzxdZQ

ii. The humans are still alive but are all fit-less, their

bone density has shrunk over the years because of laziness… being entertained to death in their “easy chairs”.

1. Is that you and me? 2. Do you believe too much of a good thing is

bad? (Students share examples) 3. It’s called “gluttony”… not just food: 4. Philippians 3:19 = “They are headed for

destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.”

iii. What’s your “appetite”? = TV, social media, friends…

II. A Life-Giving Journey a. From The Repair Ward…

i. As WALL-E and EVE deliver the plant sample to the captain of the Axiom, they discover the Auto-pilot robot (AUTO) never intended for them to return to earth in the first place… life on the Axiom is all they need. WALL-E and EVE, and the captain, fight to gain control of the ship and return home.

Hold up trash can

Page 5: Movies With A Message 2017 - Parts 1234albertvillefbc.church/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Movies...1. You are special! (In a genuine way) We are not supposed to fit in as Christians,

ii. During this encounter, these two find themselves in the “Repair Ward” (mental hospital) where they meet a bunch of crazy, messed up friends, who they accidentally set free. Watch this…

Movie Clip = “Rogued Robots – Wall-e (Part 1)” (stop at 1:30)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lokKpSrNqDA

iii. As we track these crazy robots throughout the movie, we find they help WALL-E and EVE in their own unique way.

1. They may feel useless or ‘broken” but they help save the day.

2. You may feel useless or messed up, no good for God to use… wrong!

3. “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it… You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:14 & 16, NLT)

4. Next time you find yourself thinking you should be in a “repair ward” (busted), remember that God doesn’t make mistakes!

b. …To The Escape Pod… i. The plant sample, the only way to get the ship to

turn around and head back to earth, has been hijacked and is about to be ejected into space, until WALL-E steps in this escape pod and is willing to sacrifice himself to save everyone else:

Movie Clip = “Wall-E The Space Rescue” (stop at 2:13)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX5zflBuN30

ii. It’s love… for EVE and for humanity to allowed WALL-E to be willing to sacrifice himself for others.

1. Sound familiar? In real life? 2. Only way to save us from our sin ultimately,

save us from Hell, forever… 3. “For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice

for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.” (Romans 3:25, NLT)

4. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13, NLT)

c. …To The Cockpit…

i. Obvious they get the plant back to the captain of the Axiom, where one last battle ensues between him and AUTO the robot (controlling the ship and the destiny of humanity). Before the fight. Love this line:

Movie Clip = “I Want To Live!” (0:31)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwN5Km_1X9E

ii. The captain says, learning to stand on his own two feet again, “I don’t want to survive, I want to live”.

iii. What do you think the difference is when it comes to your life? (Students share)

1. Survive = make it day to day, just getting by in this life, living comfortably

2. Live = making a difference with the time God has given you on this earth, not always comfortable but worth it!

3. 1 Peter 1:13 = “[ A Call to Holy Living ] So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.” (NLT)

d. …To Earth i. The humans eventually take control back of the ship

and head back to earth, knowing plant life and life itself is once again sustainable.

ii. But, in the process… WALL-E’s busted beyond repair. iii. WALL-E gave his all for love (for EVE, for humanity,

for earth, for life).

III. A Love-Filled Life i. EVE tries her best to rebuild WALL-E with parts left

back on earth, but he’s not quite himself anymore…

Movie Clip = “Wall-E Ending” (stop at 2:55) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KUBX5GwV3M

a. We Are A New Creation

i. WALL-E is alive, made new (because of EVE) ii. You & I are made new… truly alive because of Jesus

1. 2 Corinthians 5:17 = “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (NIV)

Never too far gone from earth, we’re never too far gone from God!

Last week, as we kicked off this new series, we learned a little something from Dory, but Dory got her start because of Nemo. Let’s see what this 2003

Disney/Pixar film has to teach us tonight…

I. Little Fish, Big Adventure a. The Best Can Lead To The Worst

i. Have you ever thought something was great and it ended up being one the worst things ever? Relationships? Addictions or habits? Desires?

ii. That’s where we begin with this story of Nemo’s life and the beginning of this movie.

iii. Marlin and Coral (Nemo’s parents) find some prime real estate to raise their family… tons of baby fish, but this location gets them in trouble from the start:

Movie Clip = “Nemo Egg Scene” (stop at 1:49)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxbsTT1PcTI

iv. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we think it will, which is displayed all throughout this movie, but we have to believe that God is still in control of it all:

v. Romans 8:28 = “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (NLT)

1. This is a promise, but only for the godly 2. Love God, follow God… He’ll handle the rest

b. The Fear That Holds You Back i. Just as things settle down for their new lives

together (Marlin and Nemo), school is in session and Nemo heads off for his first adventure outside of his home… more adventure than expected…

Movie Clip = “Nemo Swimming Out To Sea” (stop at 3:00)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RhX3lRJQMg

ii. Dad is constantly discouraging him: “You think you can do these things, but you just can’t…”

iii. Dad (Marlin) has been paralyzed by fear and that fear translates into their relationship

iv. What are you afraid of, really? (Students share) 1. Ever been paralyzed by fear? 2. Fear (reverence) Him instead… “Serve only

the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:4, NLT)

v. Speaking of fear, I am definitely afraid of sharks… which we can learn from in this movie as well…

II. Scary Sharks, Angry Angler Fish

a. Your Temptation Is Real i. At some point in their journey, Marlin meets Dory

(who we learned about last week) and they run into a group of sharks who are fighting the temptation of eating fish (“fish are friends, not food”).

ii. But, like all of us, temptation can be hard, like a shark smelling blood in the water:

Movie Clip = “Shark Scene - Bruce” (start at 1:50, ends at 3:45)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWuPGKLJXe8

iii. The best part about temptation (from God’s perspective) is that it is not sin and doesn’t have to be… there is always a way of “escape” (escape)

1. 1 Corinthians 10:13 = “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of

Page 8: Movies With A Message 2017 - Parts 1234albertvillefbc.church/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Movies...1. You are special! (In a genuine way) We are not supposed to fit in as Christians,

escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (NLT)

2. Just trust the Lord will provide a means of escape no matter your struggle!

iv. But, be careful not to fall into the Disney / fairy tale mindset of “let your conscience be your guide”.

b. Your Conscience Is Deceiving i. Disney is all about… “follow your heart” (princess

movies are all about this)! ii. Don’t! = your heart is messed up… “The human

heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9, NLT)

iii. Marlin plays Dory’s conscience here & looks where it leads them:

Movie Clip = “Angler Fish Chase (Normal Pitch)” (stop at 1:39)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtgWo6h99Zg

iv. They thought they saw “the light”, but it was just trouble, like that angler fish!

v. Instead of following your “conscience”, maybe you should follow God’s Spirit (the true Light)

1. Romans 8:14 = “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (NLT)

2. As God’s kids = led by His Spirit! (Still, small voice we talked about a while back)

III. Selfish Seagulls, Faithful Fathers a. The Selfishness Of Us

i. I don’t think I could do a message based on this movie without including our favorite little seagulls, who love to say…? (Students guess) = “Mine”

Movie Clip = “Mine (full version HQ)” (1:35)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4BNbHBcnDI&t=4s

ii. You have probably never thought of yourself as a seagull, but aren’t we just like that… since we were toddlers, saying everything is “mine”, always wanting what others have, always have to outdo others. We are so selfish!

1. God says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress oth ers. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3, NLT)

2. We should be more like God, our good, good Father!

b. The Unselfishness Of Him i. God was anything but selfish we He came after you

and me, when He sent Jesus for us, when He proved His unending love for us. Much like Marlin for Nemo (Nemo is saved, all is well, school is back):

Movie Clip = “Happy Ending” (stop at 1:46)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAezL6z17Dg

ii. God loves us much more than Marlin loves Nemo… 1. “This is real love—not that we loved God,

but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” (1 John 4:10, NLT)

iii. Don’t you just love Disney movies and how they always have a “happy ending”. Your happy ending in life is waiting for you… it is Heaven (only made possible by a relationship with God’s Son)!

Better than “Finding Nemo” is being found by God (The Father)!

Welcome to a brand new school year and our brand new message series based on your favorite Disney Pixar movies (voted on by you)!

I. A Movie With A Message

a. The Power Of Movies i. Have your ever thought about the power of a movie

in your life? Movies touch us, change our minds, redirect our attention, give us quotables, inspire us to do something (more than just entertain us).

ii. Ever wondered about the subluminal messages these producer/directors have in these movies… (scary)

iii. What is your favorite all-time movie? (Students share) Why is it your favorite? (Students share)

b. The Message Within Them i. What if we viewed every movie with a godly

worldview? What could God be teaching me through this? Is this something that is contrary to God’s Word or character in the first place?!

c. The Passion Of Animation i. Have you heard of Pixar Animation Studios? (pic on

screen of building in Emeryville, CA)

ii. “Pixar got its start in 1974 when New York Institute of Technology's (NYTI) founder Alexander Schure, who was also the owner of a traditional animation studio, established the Computer Graphics Lab (CGL), recruited computer scientists who shared his ambitions about creating the world's first computer-animated film…” (Wikipedia.org)

iii. Steve Jobs = of Apple & chief executive officer iv. In 2006, Disney ultimately agreed to buy Pixar for

approximately $7.4 billion! v. Finding Nemo (2003), along with its sequel Finding

Dory (2016), as well as Toy Story 3 (2010) are among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time, with the lattermost film being the third all-time highest-grossing animated film with a gross of $1.063 billion

vi. Big money, big entertainment… big message?

II. A Fish With Amnesia a. Meet Dory & Her Movie (pic on screen)

i. Her first appearance was in the movie Finding Nemo (2003), 13 years ago, has short term memory loss, adventurous and crazy, caring and compassionate

ii. This movie (from last year) takes us back to her childhood and throughout her journey (after reuniting Nemo and his family) to find her family

b. Watch That Undertow i. One of the first scenes of the movie (just a couple

minutes in) is about her parents teaching her an extremely important lesson about the undertow:

Movie Clip = “Undertow Song” (0:58)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvXZ37E7vUQ

ii. The undertow is real = “an underlying current, force, or tendency that is in opposition to what is apparent” (Webster’s dictionary definition)

iii. Rip current… dangerous (pic on screen) = like sin! 1. Forget about it and it could snatch you right

up… and pull you deeper in. Don’t let it! 2. Psalm 69:13-15 = “But I keep praying to

you, Lord, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation. Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me… pull me from these deep waters. Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me.” (NLT)

Page 11: Movies With A Message 2017 - Parts 1234albertvillefbc.church/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Movies...1. You are special! (In a genuine way) We are not supposed to fit in as Christians,

c. Shhh… Pay Attention To Their Advice i. Dory’s journey continues, searching for her parents &

encountering new adventures and memories along the way, like when someone tells her to “shhhh…”

Movie Clip = “Chased Giant Octopus” (2:50)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C2vR_PxcC4

ii. Moving through this new part of the ocean, not knowing what they will encounter, is a lot like life… but others have been there and can warn you along the way!

1. Proverbs 12:26 = “The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray.” (NLT)

2. Listen to godly advice, trust those who have been there and know!

iii. Dory gets separated from Marlin & Nemo in this journey (which leads them to the Marine Life Institute) and needs help… introducing Hank:

Movie Clip = “Funny Hank The Octopus Scene” (start at :10, stop at 1:00)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yEs3H0WejY

d. What Kind Of Friend Are You? i. Hank is no doubt a huge help to Dory throughout the

remainder of this story, but he can do something that helps him but can be detrimental to you. Can you guess what that is? (Students guess)

ii. His skin can camouflage… helpful in hiding 1. We are not called to be “Camouflage

Christians” = Matthew 23:15 = “What sorrow awaits you… Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell[a] you yourselves are!” (NLT)

iii. Be genuine… Christ expects it, your “real” friends need to see it (live it out 24/7)

III. A Reunion Of The Heart

a. Dory Teaches Us About Forgiveness i. Eventually Dory finds her family but immediately

feels the remorse of why she was lost in the first place, watch their reunion…

Movie Clip = “Dory Find Her Family” (start at 1:19, stop at 3:41)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVBXeD46FCw

ii. Ever feel that way with God? So sorry and unworthy of being called a part of His “family”?

iii. Acts 2:38 = “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (NLT)

iv. We are family, we are forgiven (no matter what), that’s true UNCONDITIONAL love!!

b. Dory Teaches Us About Freedom i. In one of the final rescue scenes of the movie, Dory

helps free Nemo, Marlin, and all her new friends from the truck taking them to another state/institute.

ii. Remember, these are wild sea creatures, bond up in captivity, and Dory sets them free! Watch:

Movie Clip = “Epic Truck Falling Scene” (1:08) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0kJ5-3IAzY

iii. This is exactly what Christ did for us! Remember this

simple passage? = John 8:36 = “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” (NLT)

iv. “Truly free” means “fo real freedom”! v. Like my sermon illustration gone bad a couple years

back, handcuffs (needed help) = show shadow box c. Dory Teaches Us About Faith

i. One final clip, the very end of the movie (besides the end credit hidden scene… love those)

ii. I know Dory is just a little fish, just an animated movie, but this little fish gives us the greatest message of all… “you can do it” (no matter how small you are or how big the “ocean” is in front of you)…

Movie Clip = “Happy Ending” (start at :04, ends at 2:15)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuE8QldfyUU

iii. Disney reminds you, “You can do whatever you put your mind to…”

iv. God reminds you, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NLT)

1. My daughter, making the basketball team… 2. It is so much more than that = everything!!

v. He is your strength if you will only trust Him… vi. If Dory can do it, so can you.
