U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite Jr. was the guest speaker. Bruce O. McLean, a graduating senior in Business Administration, received top honors as the graduating senior with the highest grade- point average and for having the highest cu- mulative class average as a junior and a senior. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Setting the Stage for Long-Term Success.” On Thursday, April 24, the Southern University System honored faculty and staff at the 2013-2014 Research and Academic Achievement Awards Program in the Gymnasium. Dr. Murty Kambhampati March 12-16: Coordinated a group of 20 students, faculty, and staff to participate in the 71st Joint An-nual NIS-BKX National Conference in Houston, Texas. Three of our STEM majors won the first and second places in the areas of mathematics and biology for their oral and poster presentations. Re-ceived travel funds (~$4000 – amount paid directly to the hotel by NIS Sponsors) towards the lodging for 15 students from Dr. Carolyn Cousin, Director, NIH Program at University of District of Columbia. March 18, 2014: Participated along with Dr. Joseph Olubadewo, professor of Biology, in the annual LA-BoR State Articulation Meeting in Baton Rouge to review Biology Common Course Content. March 18-20, 2014: Participated in 2014 State of the Coast (SOC14) Conference with one of my mentees Ms. Favour Tangban in New Orleans and judged the graduate and undergraduate student posters. March 28, 2014: Participated in the statewide DevEd Conference conducted by the LA-BoR in Baton Rouge. March 28, 2014: Invited Dr. Bruce Jackson, professor and chair, Department of Biotechnology and Fo-rensic DNA Science, Mass Bay Community College, Mass., to the Department of Natural Sciences as a guest speaker and as a consultant to the Forensic Science Program. Participated in developing an NIH proposal – BUILD program along with STEM colleagues, in collab-oration with Southern University A&M College, Baton Rouge. March 29, 2014: Prepared and submitted the 2013-14 mid-year annual report for Forensic Science program to Dr. Brenda Jackson, Director, Title-III program. Submitted the nominations for a total of four STEM students under the categories of Highest GPA Awards and the Outstanding Service Awards to Dr. Brenda Jackson, Co-Chair of Honors and Awards Day, for the 2014 Honors and Awards Day on behalf of the Department of Natural Sciences. Participated in periodic meetings and served as a member of the Space Utilization and Faculty Hand-book Review Committees. Completed the search for Assistant Professor/Director for Forensic Science Program and submitted recommendations to the Dean, CAS. Reviewed several applications for the positions of Assistant Professor, Forensic Science; Assistant Pro-fessor, Chemistry; and FS/Natural Sciences Laboratory Technician.

On March 19, 2014, E3MaS held its weekly meeting. During the meeting, Dr. Mostafa Elaasar, professor of Physics, made a presentation on Electric Form Factor of the Neutron Experiment E04-110, a research that he conducted at the Jefferson National Accelerator laboratory. Dr. Kim Jovanovich from the University of New Orleans’ College Of Engineering visited SUNO to talk to students about the joint engineering program at SUNO and UNO. Accompanying Dr. Jovanovich were members of his staff, Ms. Patricia Murret and Ms. Ashley Merheb. He encouraged students to seek careers in Engineering. He also mentioned that students should become a part of a professional engineering organization. Ms. Tira Hill, the president of the National Society of Black Engineers UNO Chapter, spoke to students about the organization. She explained the benefits of the organization and encouraged students to apply. LaQuinia Banks, a double major in math and biology, secured first place for the oral presentations in Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics & Engineering. Mathematics sophomore Myeisha Keith also secured first place for the poster presentations in Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics & Engineer-ing. Finally, biology senior Samuel Okpechi won second place for the poster presentation in biology. Dr. Joe Omojola, Professor of Mathematics & Physics, attended the Advisory Board meeting for the Na-tional Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 27 – 29, 2014.

Dr. Mostafa Elaasar: On March 19, 2014, Dr. Mostafa Elaasar, Professor of Physics, made a research presentation during the E3MaS weekly meeting. The presentation was entitled “Electric Form Factor of the Neutron.” This re-

search was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory, Newport News, Virginia.

Between March 12-16, 2014, fif-teen SUNO STEM students – nine biology majors and six math ma-jors, including Janice Carter, Mi-chael Okoronkwo, Samuel Ok-pechi, Keith Perkins, Favour Tangban, Adolph Vicknair, Shel-don Williams, Charisse Becnel, Trevor Gibbs, LaQunia Banks, Noel Clark, Quintel Washington, Janica Gordon, Myeisha Keith, and Goodnews Tangban, attend-ed the 71st National Institute of Science and Beta Kappa Chi Sci-entific Honor Society NIS/BKX Joint Annual meeting in Houston, Texas. The students were accompanied by four faculty members and one staff member, in-cluding Dr. Joe Omojola, Dr. Murty Kambhampati, Dr. Rachid Belmasrour, Dr. Illya Tietzel and Ms. Phyllis Okwan.

Dr. Elaasar participated as a judge in the E3MaS 4th Annual Science Fair that took place on Feb-ruary 28, 2014 in SUNO’s gymnasium. Dr. Elaasar submitted a research proposal for the Supervised Undergraduate Research Experi-ence (SURE) program at the Louisiana Board of Regents. The student who will be supervised is Ms. Janice Carter, a Biology major. The proposal is entitled “Design and test a temperature con-trolled compartment for fruit flies to be used for LaSPACE High Altitude Student Payload.” Dr. Illya Tietzel: In March, Dr. Tietzel was named chair of the Search Committee for the positions of Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Assistant Professor of Forensic Sciences and Laboratory Technician in Forensic Sciences/Natural Sciences.

On behalf of Dr. Murty Kambhampati, Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, Dr. Tietzel hosted the visit of renowned Forensic Science Pro-fessor Dr. Bruce Jackson. Dr. Jackson is a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts, Low-ell and Director of Biotechnology at MassBay Community College. He also created the first de-gree program in the world in Forensic DNA Sci-ence and IURIS, the only minority-owned Foren-sic DNA consulting firm in the United States. He won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Sci-ence, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. At SUNO, Dr. Bruce Jackson led a question-and-answer session for students of the newly created Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree

program. Students enjoyed the opportunity to network with Dr. Jackson and he answered their career questions. After the hour-long meet and greet, Dr. Jackson gave a seminar talk about his Fo-rensic Science work to students, faculty and administrators. The Director of Title III programs, Dr. Brenda Jackson and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. David Adegboye, joined the session. In the afternoon, Dr. Jackson provided consulting services and made recommendations toward laboratory design and the im-plementation of the Forensic Sciences program. The visit was spon-sored by the Title III program under the leadership of Dr. Jackson with contributions from the Department of Natural Sciences and the support of administrative assistants Ms. Saragrace Novatney and Ms. Polly. Richter.

Dr. Tietzel served as judge for oral presentations and poster presentations at the 71st Joint Annual Meeting of the NIS/BKX in Houston, Texas from March 12 - 16, 2014. A mentee of Dr. Tietzel, Biology undergraduate Janice Carter, presented her research at the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM, Feb. 20-22, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Ms. Carter gave a talk about how “LEGO Robotics Could Increase Female Interest in STEM.” She was awarded a full conference travel award that included airfare, conference registration and lodging. This was Ms. Carter’s first national conference. She presented her research that was funded by the LaSPACE consortium sustaining grant “SUNO Space-Related Program Activities Creating Experiences for Under-graduates and Faculty of Minority Institutions” (SUNO SPACE UFOM). Dr. Rachid Belmasrour, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, assisted the student with the statistical analysis. Dr. Mostafa Elaasar and Dr. Illya Tietzel, Princi-pal Investigator of the grant, provided supervision and project oversight. A mentee of Dr. Tietzel, biology undergraduate Keith Perkins, presented his research at the Emerging Research-ers National (ERN) Conference in STEM, Feb. 20-22, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Perkins presented a poster about the “Detection of Oil Spill Microbe in Shrimp Species of the Gulf of Mexico.” He was awarded a full confer-ence travel award that included airfare, conference registration and lodging. On February 28, 2014, Dr. Tietzel’s Forensic Science Seminar students participated in a video conference with Dr. Bruce Jackson, recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Men-toring, the director of the only Forensic Science program at a Community College in the U.S. and also an affiliated professor with Boston University. One of his students, undergraduate Grant Fitzgerald, talked about his work in Forensic Sciences using a real case. Dr. Mike Meehan from Satellite Telecommunications Network Interface / Dis-tance Learning at SUNO and Mr. Michael Lyons from Massachusetts Bay Community College provided the tech-nology. Also on February 28, Dr. Tietzel gave a talk about the Science Section at the Praxis II Tests Series Workshop: Ele-mentary Education Content Knowledge Test in the College of Education & Human Development. The workshop was organized by Ms. Gilda Jones, who is the official Praxis coordinator at SUNO.

Dr. Christian Clement Dr. Clement participated as part of faculty representing Southern University at New Orleans for SUNO Day at Amite High School in Amite, Louisiana March 25, 2014 to showcase SUNO as a higher education institution of choice and also part of a recruitment drive. Dr. Clement participated as part of Southern University at New Orleans faculty in “The Liberal Arts in a Modern University and Economy” event at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel, 7000 Bluebonnet Blvd., Baton Rouge, Thursday, March 6, 2014. In March and April, Team Leader Dr. Clement, with members, Dr. Bashir Atteia, Dr. Illya Tietzel, Dr. Joseph Olubadewo, Dr. Michael Ibiwoye, Dr. Murty Kambhampati, Dr. Joe Omojola and Dr. Carl Johnson, finalized SUNO’s part of the Louisiana Medical Education and Development Initiative in Biomedical, Health and Social Sciences (LA MED) NIH grant proposal for NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative (U54) submitted by SUBR on April 2, 2014. The grant submission was for NIH Funding Opportunity Announce-ment (FOA) Number RFA-RM-13-016 in the amount of $2.3 million per year for a total of five years. SUNO.

Dr. Igwe Udeh, Dean Report on Major College of Business Activities Academic Excellence Initiatives:

On Thursday, March 13, 2014, Dr. Igwe E. Udeh, Dean & Professor of Business, along with Dr. Adnan Omar and Mrs. Timotea Bailey, met with Ms. Mary Jo Webster, Chief Operating Officer of NORDC, and her team to discuss an implementation plan for the Lyons Center technology literacy proposal, which is under review by the City of New Orleans. The SUNO College of Business is in negotiation with the City of New Orleans through NORDC to provide the technology literacy training essential for New Orleans youths and adults to become more technology savvy. The meeting resulted in several agreements, including adjustment of the program schedule; commissioning of a study to determine most urgently needed topics of instruction; and compression of the learners into two cohorts. The technical education program at Lyons Center was expected to begin May 1, 2014.

Dr. Igwe E. Udeh and Dr. Frank Martin took part in the Kick Off Meeting of the New Orleans Region-al innovation Alliance (NORIA) on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, from 1-3 p.m. at the Regional Planning Authority Building, 10 Veterans Blvd., New Orleans, La. The meeting was used to review the goals and strategic objectives of NORIA and to initiate an implementation plan that will allow for the goals to be achieved. Various members of the alliance from University of New Orleans, Xavier University, Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission, and St. Tammany Parish Economic Develop-ment, were present. The meeting was hosted by Amber Seely-Marks, the Director of Economic Devel-opment, Regional Planning Commission.

On Monday, March 24, 2014, Dr. Igwe E. Udeh, dean and professor of Business, represented Southern University at New Orleans, during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Walmart’s Hiring Center for the New Orleans-East Walmart. This center will screen and hire approximately 300 associates to work at the new Walmart slated to open in this summer.. Other dignitaries in attendance were New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu; Councilmember James Austin Gray; representatives of the Urban League of New Orleans; representatives of the City of New Orleans; members of the New Orleans City Council; State Representative Wesley Bishop, members of the clergy, and representatives of Walmart.

Health Information Management Systems Mrs. Andrea Mignott and her faculty attended a series of workshops and meetings in the City of New Orleans, among which were the Consortium of Baccalaureate and General Informatics and Information Management Educators, Clinical Documentation Improvement Program Examina-tion, Certified Health Care Privacy and Security. Three (3) students, Gilda Scott-Wallace, Ann Barrow and Aaron Byrd of the HIMS Program, passed the recent RHIA examination held last month.

Professional Outreach to Students & Community: BETA GAMMA SIGMA INSTALLATION AND INDUCTION CEREMONY: The students, faculty, and staff of the College of Business & Public Administration performed the inaugural Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Business Fraternity Installation and Induction Ceremonies at 7p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Harrah's Hotel in New Orleans. The SUNO BGS Chapter Installation and new member induction ceremonies were in recognition of the Business College's achievement of the prestigious AACSB International accreditation, which now entitles high-achieving CBA students and graduates to become members of Beta Gamma Sigma, the most exclusive and pres-tigious business honor society in the world. The Chapter Installation and New Member Induction Ceremonies were performed by Dr. John A. Williams, dean, College of Business Administration, University of New Orleans, and the guest speaker was local entrepre-neur, Troy Henry, managing partner, Henry Consulting, LLC. Dr. Jennifer O’Sullivan, CBA assistant professor of Finance, assisted Dr. Williams in the ceremonies in her capacity as the Secretary/Advisor of BGS. Mrs. Timotea Bailey, CBA Director of Student Services and Dr. Frank Martin also served in the BGS Planning Committee. Founded in 1913, the first national honor society in business was a merger of three separate societies established to honor academic achievement in business at the University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois and the Univer-sity of California Today, Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society that provides the highest recognition a business stu-dent anywhere in the world can receive in a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate (graduate) program at a school accredited by AACSB International. The mission of Beta Gamma Sigma is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business, to foster personal and professional excellence, to advance the values of the Society, and to serve its lifelong members. Beta Gamma Sigma’s objectives include: (1) encourage and honor high academic achievement by students of business and management through chapters in business programs accredited by AACSB International; (2) foster in Beta Gamma Sigma members an enduring commitment to the founding principles and values of the Society: honor and integrity, pursuit of wisdom, and earnestness; (3) support the advancement of business thought and practice to encourage lifelong learning; (4) enhance the value of Beta Gamma Sigma for students and alumni members in their professional lives; and (5) advance the visibility and reputation of Beta Gamma Sigma. BLACK EXECUTIVE EXCHANGE PROGRAM (BEEP): From March 19-21, 2014, executives from around the country descended on the SUNO College of Business & Public Administration to aid students by act-ing as role models and helping students prepare for their first major position after graduation. The SUNO BEEP Committee consists of Ms. Vera Autry and Dr. Louis C. Mancuso (Co-Chairs), Dr. H. Kevin Fulk, and Dr. Mario Krenn. The SUNO BEEP Program had a record number of BEEPers from California, Chica-go, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Alabama, and New Orleans. The BEEP events included: Meet & Greet at Har-rah's Hotel (Wednesday, March 19, 2014); Class-room Visitations; Men-to-Men Session; Women-to-Women Session; Resume and Interview techniques (using television) (Thursday, March 20, 2014); and Career Fair (Friday, March 21, 2014) A record number of students (84) attended the Meet & Greet at Harrah’s Hotel. More than 100 students attended the 9:30 classroom session. More than 100 people attended each of the Women-to-Women Ses-sion, the Men-to-Men Session and the Interview/Resume Session. The Friday Career Fair was a great success.

SECOND ANNUAL ETHICS CONFERENCE: The College of Business & Public Administration presented the Second Annual Ethics Conference (March 31 – April 1, 2014) featuring Gordon S. Massie (BA in Economics and MBA from the University of California Berkeley). He worked in the financial/investment business for 30 years with companies including Texas Commerce Bancshares, Prudential Insurance Company, American General Corporation, and American International Group (AIG). At AIG he was Head of the Leveraged Finance Group with manage-ment responsibility for 60 investment profes-sionals and nearly $20 billion of investments, including high-yield bonds, bank loans, emerg-ing market debt, and distressed/bankrupt as-sets.

DBE Panel: Dr. Frank Martin, Chair of the Business Entrepreneurship Department, participated in the State and Local Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Panel, which certifies small businesses as disadvantaged for the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board, the Aviation Board, and Caesar’s (formerly Harrah’s) Casino, in-March 2014.

Museum Studies Dr. David Riep, interim director of Museum Studies, and Dr. Sara Hollis participated in meetings of the faculty senate, SACS-COC Fifth Year Interim Report process and CAAAS Faculty Advisory Board. The essays of Dr. Riep on East Africa Trade Routes and Sotho Cosmology were accepted for publication in the African Meets African, and he was invited to serve as a question writer/exam developer for the College Board AP Art History Testing. Dr. Hollis wrote an article about the 30 Americans Exhibition of African American Art for The New Orleans Tribune. Dr. Mwalimu Shujaa, Dean Report on Major College of Education Activities Accreditation: Child Development and Family Studies CDFS faculty participated in the CoEHD meetings for the NAEYC SPA writing for Early Childhood and Elemen-tary Education programs and NCATE accreditation activities for all teacher education programs throughout the month of March. Dr. Bordenave gathered data for the NAEYC and ACEI SPA reports for Certification-Only Alter-native Path Program as requested and informed the College of a probable August 2014 receipt of feedback.
