TheheartofthepackageisSpencer’smultistage,hermeticallysealed,centrifugalblower.Theblowerisfabricatedfrommaterialsthatwithstandthecorrosivenatureofthegas–thehousingandstationaryinternalpartsaremadeofstainlesssteel,theimpellersareanodizedaluminum,andtheequipmentincludesanInconelelectricalconnector.Anexplosion-proofmotorislocatedinsidethehousing,whereitiscooledbythebiogasflow,extendingitslifeandenhancingperformance.Thehermeticdesignprovidesforzeroleakagetotheenvironmentandodor-freegasdelivery.

Gaspressure-boosterpackagesaresuppliedasturnkeymodules,withcomponentsmountedonacommonskid,readyforhookuptoon-sitepipingandelectricalsystems.Inadditiontothehermeticallysealedblower,eachpackagehasitsowncontrolpanel,isolationvalvesandotheroptionalcustomizedcomponents,asneeded,tosatisfythespecificapplication.

Componentsincludeagasfilterseparatortodeliverclean,dryfueltotheprocess,whileprotectingtheblowerandothercomponentsfromcorrosion.Arecirculationloopreturnsgasbackintotheblowerinletafterpassingthroughanintercoolerallowingcontinuousboosterperformancedowntozerobiogassupply.Packagesmayalsoincludedriptraps,inletpressureswitches,loadcontrol,starter/disconnect,ammeter,andothervariousprocessmonitoringcomponents.Basedonourcustomer’sneeds,Spencerengineerswilldesignacomprehen-sivepackagesystemtomeetspecificprocessrequirements.

What is purified biogas?Biogasisthebyproductofanynumberofvarious biomass feedstocks – complexorganic animal or plant waste that ishighinmoisturecontent,suchasanimalmanure,food-processingwastes,sewage,and switchgrass or other plant compost.Thebiogasiscapturedthroughanaerobicdigestion,abiochemicalprocessbywhichdifferent types of bacteria work togetherto break down the feedstocks within anoxygen-freeenvironment.

However, raw biogas is not high qualityenoughtobeusedasafuelsource,asithas toomuchmoisture, is too corrosiveandhaschemicalresidue.Thesolutionisthe use of biogas upgrading or purifica-tion processes whereby contaminants inthe raw biogas stream are absorbed orscrubbed, leavingmoremethaneperunitvolumeofgas.

In some cases, feedstocks may not becompletely consumed in the biogas cap-turing process – for example, sludge inwaste-water treatmentplants.Thesludgecanbedriedbyblowersandsoldforfer-tilizer or compost, further maximizingefficientuseofbiomass.

Purified biogas is gaining popularity inmanypartsoftheworldasanalternative,energyneutral fuel source, but its use isnotnew.Humanshaveknownthevalueofcompostingbiomassforfuelsinceancienttimes.Today’s increasingly efficient tech-nologyincreasespotentialenergyoutput.

Today, New York City’s renewable energy includes the use of biofuel for transportation and various forms of biomass for space heating and hot water. The Spencer gas pressure-booster blower installed in a Brooklyn waste-to-energy plant uses an air- cooled heat exchanger for gas cooling, complemented by pressure and temper- ature gauges and switches for process control with stainless interconnecting piping for corrosion resistance.

A Spencer gas pressure-booster blower is hard at work delivering biogas to a boiler at a California wastewater treat- ment facility. The skid includes the blower and a shell and tube heat exchanger that uses plant effluent as a sustainable source for gas cooling. Other options include pressure switches connected to an explosion proof skid mounted junction box with an electric actuated recirculation valve to provide continuous operation down to zero gas supply.
