Caring. Connected.

Responsible FOR

one another.

This is WHO WE ARE.

THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

This is Federation.

2

For the Jewish Federation and United

Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan

Detroit, 2002/2003 was a year of

challenges to meet and promises to keep.

It was a year for positive thinking and

creative solutions — a year that tested

leadership, staff, and volunteers, as well as

the agencies that count on our support to

provide vital services to the community.

In line with market conditions, this was a

year of continued losses in our endow-

ment’s investment returns, compounded

by increased demands on our reserves.

Despite an aggressive fundraising goal and

a significant increase in our Annual

Campaign achievement, our community’s

needs exceeded available dollars with

the result being reduced allocations to

agencies both at home and overseas.

Overall, we are proud to report that our

community is moving forward. After a year

of economic downturn, we continue to

achieve and grow. Through the extraordi-

nary efforts of our community working

together, we have met and surpassed

ambitious goals in our Annual Campaign.

Thanks to the generosity of Nancy and

Stephen Grand, as well as other donors

in our community, our Grand Challenge

Fund far exceeded its goal of $4 million.

Through gifts to the Grand Challenge

Emergency Fund designated for urgent

needs in Israel, we continued to keep

children safe in extended-day programs

in twelve elementary schools throughout

Israel, serving over 2,000 youngsters.

We continued our vital work in Detroit’s

Partnership 2000 region of the Central

Galilee, allocating funds to support Israel’s

most vulnerable populations of older

adults, new Israelis, and those making

aliyah from Argentina. Here in Michigan,

we hosted 200 Israeli teens for a

summer they’ll always remember at

Camp Tamarack.

Moving forward, in response to our

family ties to the State of Israel and a

strong desire to be there, we launched

Federation’s Michigan Miracle Mission 4,

scheduled for April 18-28, 2004. Plans

are underway, with the goal of 800

participants sharing an experience of a

lifetime next year in Jerusalem.

To our family of agencies, we added the

Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit

and celebrated the graduation of its first

senior class. Expanding care facilities for

older adults in the community, we began

construction of the Dorothy and Peter D.

Brown Memory Care Pavilion, scheduled

to open in January 2004. Responding to

the growing needs of Jewish Family

Service, and with the generous support

of the Joseph and Graham Orley families,

we launched an $8 million capital

campaign to build a new facility in West

Bloomfield. Serving students in East

Lansing, we opened the new Lester J.

Morris Hillel Student Center at Michigan

State University.

Building on extraordinary individual

and corporate gifts to our Millennium

Campaign for Detroit’s Jewish Future, we

have transformed both the D. Dan & Betty

Kahn Building on the Eugene and Marcia

Applebaum Jewish Community Campus

and the Jimmy Prentis Morris Building on

the A. Alfred Taubman Jewish Community

Campus. By year’s end, the Harry and

Center will open the gateway to the David

B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center and

Shalom Street, our new address for Jewish

discovery, made possible through the

generous support of the Ford Motor

Company Fund.

Thanks to the generosity of those who

envision the future of the Detroit Jewish

community, our Jewish Life Fund,

established by gifts to the Millennium

Campaign, supports Jewish family

programs, Israel experiences for young

people, Jewish learning, and opportunities

for leadership. To the roster of community

leaders and philanthropists who initiated

the Millennium Campaign, we added

Robert A. Stewart, whose gift supports

our community’s endowed Israel

Scholarship Fund.

In times of economic adversity, affecting

all charitable institutions, in times that

have caused greater human need in our

community and especially in Jewish

communities around the world, our

Federation has stepped up to meet its

commitments and continue building

for the future.

But the crisis has also sharpened the need

for us to concentrate on two priorities: to

build our financial reserves and to involve

many more young men and women in the

work of our community.

To this end, we have established The

Detroit Legacy Fund, a restricted

endowment to secure our community’s

future. Through this special campaign, we

will ask our supporters to designate the

United Jewish Foundation as a beneficiary

in their estate plans.

We in Detroit are also experiencing a

transition in our leadership, which calls

for us to involve our younger generations

to take on leadership and decision making

roles throughout the community. The

James and Nancy Grosfeld Leadership

Program is one example of the ways we

can motivate our young people. This year’s

program supported 18 participants in

training to take future leadership roles and

culminated with a 7-day mission to Kiev

and Poland. Programs such as these are

only a beginning. Our work must continue

with new resolve and energy.

There is a fine line between excellence and

mediocrity in the efforts we make to build

Jewish life in our community, throughout

North America and around the world. Here

in Detroit we are fortunate that we have an

opportunity to choose. Let us continue to

choose excellence, as we move forward.

“Thank you.”“Words cannot express the joy I felt the day my daughter became a

Bat Miztvah. My experience at the Melton School helped make this

milestone perfect in every way.”

2003 graduate of the Florence Melton Adult Mini School

“There are no words to thank you enough for all that you have done

for us. You all have been our salvation. If ever you need any kind

of testimonial, praising the care and quality of your program or

the incredible caliber of professionalism, conscientiousness, and

kindness of your staff, you can count on my contribution.”

Family of client of the Dorothy and Peter Brown JewishCommunity Adult Day Care Center, supported by Federation.

“Educating our children is the key to a better life in Israel today, and

we have the Detroit community to thank. Through your direct

involvement in our schools, you’ve ensured our continued success of

Parents and Children Together (PACT).”

“I would like to express my most sincere gratitude for affording

me the opportunity to participate in what will surely be one of

the most memorable experiences of my life. Who could have

imagined that Jewish people still live in the Ukraine?

The program that was prepared for us during our visit, allowed

us to see these hidden gems. What was clear to me is that no

matter where you are in the world, Jews are Jews. The sense of

identity, the fight for education, the strength of community, and

the call for philanthropy is what we are about.”

Participant in Grosfeld Young Leadership Mission

“We are all ‘banim’ and ‘bonim’ (builders). We are individuals

that have benefited from those before us who have provided

opportunities that contribute to who we are as people. But we

then have an obligation to be builders – to recognize our

capacity to give and have the courage to actualize our potential

in everything that we do. In that way, we increase a sense of

shalom, wholeness, in the world.”

The guiding principle of Federation’s

Annual Campaign has always been that

we are one: one people, one community,

one family, and through one gift we stand

united, we speak with a common voice,

and we are heard.

In 2002/2003 our voice was urgent.

Rising unemployment. Increasing

requests for financial assistance. Growing

demand for senior housing. Emergency

calls for counseling and family services.

These were our challenges on the home

front. Far worse, the reports from our

brothers and sisters in Israel were

alarming. Not since the creation of the

Jewish state had we seen Israel so torn

by war, in such deep economic crisis,

and so insecure in her future.

This was the environment in which we

launched Federation’s 2003 Annual

Campaign, with veterans at the helm,

campaign co-chairs Nancy Grand, serving

in the position for an unprecedented third

year, and Douglas Bloom in his second

year of service to the Campaign.

The primacy of the 2003 Annual

Campaign was all the more apparent as

we came to understand that the needs of

our community were far greater than

what any year’s campaign dollars could

address. How could we do more with

less? With so much at stake on the

success of the Campaign, hundreds of

volunteers and thousands of donors made

extraordinary efforts to make every call,

every solicitation, and every dollar count.

And stretch. And work harder than ever.

Highlights: On a Super Sunday unlike any we have

ever seen, and with the generous support

of sponsor DaimlerChysler, more than

450 volunteers made thousands of calls

in appeal for Federation’s Annual

Campaign, using every available phone

line at both the Max M. Fisher Federation

Building and the Jimmy Prentis Morris

Jewish Community Center on the

A. Alfred Taubman Campus in Oak Park.

And the community came through for a

total of $750,000 in pledges.

Drawing a crowd of almost 700 on

behalf of the Annual Campaign in

November, Harvard law professor, civil

libertarian, and prominent author, Alan

Dershowitz, addressed the community

on “Why Terrorism Works.”

All in a day’s work: in two separate

events the Women’s Campaign and

Education Department raised a total of

$2.75 million. The annual

Pomegranate Event drew 65 women,

each pledging $1,800 to $5,000 to the

Campaign.

The Ruby and Lion of Judah Annual

Recognition weighed in the following

day with a power breakfast, where 150

women pledged a total of $2.5 million.

The event that’s become a holiday

tradition, Federation’s Young Adult

Division can count on Latkes and Vodka

to mix, mingle and raise funds.

March madness: with hundreds of

volunteers, some working nearly

round-the-clock, Federation declared

an Israel Emergency Month in March.

Campaign Countdown wrapped up the

month in a five-day phonathon, with

agency volunteers and leadership

reaching thousands of households to

raise over $450,000.

Family-oriented, volunteer-driven,

networking, young, singles, couples

professionals, lifetime achievers – all

welcome. For all ways to be involved in

the Jewish community, there are doors

into Federation. For events, updates,

missions news, views, and stories, please

Ready for a new crop of 5th graders each

year, Federation’s hands-on Tzedakah

Experience and Penny Harvest introduces

the basic principles of giving and

receiving, as well as putting Federation

dollars to work at local agencies. The

event drew almost 900 parents, children

and agency representatives in attendance.

On Federation’s Mitzvah Day, December

25th, some 800 volunteers – many of

them children – spread cheer and good

will across the metro area. Volunteers

served meals, visited residents in nursing

homes, and filled in for staff in more than

33 social service agencies and locations.

Big Megillah! For a new spin on its

annual Threads fundraising event,

(formerly called CHOICES), the Women’s

Campaign and Education Department

hosted a breakfast with a presentation of

“Esther,” a one-woman show with Israeli

performance artist, Gabriella Lev.

Noshin’ hamantashen and sharing the

magic of Purim, the Young Adult

Division (YAD) sponsored a Daniel Sobel

Friendship Circle celebration geared to

children with special needs.

Headlining Federation Forum, Heath J.

Meriwether, publisher of the Detroit Free

Press addressed an audience of nearly

200 on “Striking a Balance,” reflecting

on his recent trip to Israel.

In celebration of the power of women

to create positive change, the Jewish

Women’s Foundation held its first annual

“Women Lighting the Way,” honoring

Penny B. Blumenstein, Federation’s first

woman to serve as president.

In “Search for the Oldest Members of the

Jewish Community” Federation’s

ElderLink hosted a luncheon honoring

twenty-four “oldest adults” (ages 95 and

up) at the Fleischman Residence/

Blumberg Plaza on the Eugene and

Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community

Campus. Counting friends, family and

supporting staff, over 70 people were

in attendance this year.

A little rain on an afternoon in June did

nothing to dampen the spirit of Take

Pride in Israel Day, which carried on

indoors at the Jewish Community Center

in West Bloomfield. Hundreds arrived,

sporting blue and white, and waving flags

in a show of support. Israeli music,

dance, arts and crafts were the fare.

After 17 years of success, building

community in the neighborhoods of

Oak Park and Southfield, Federation’s

Neighborhood Project declared its work

officially concluded. A three-day jazz

festival was held in celebration at

Charlotte Rothstein Park.

On a mission. Taking the lead in

planning and recruitment for the

National YAD Mission of summer 2003,

Detroiters, Laura Hirschhorn and Brad

“Bubba” Urdan, served as National

Co-Chair and Recruitment Chair

respectively. Detroit’s YAD delegation

represented over a quarter of the

total participation.

MICHAEL W. MADDIN

Michael W. Maddin – Mickey to all who

know him – easily gives credit to others

and will readily admit he’s one to resist

awards. His selfless, unassuming manner

is perhaps one of many reasons he

continues to win our community’s

esteem. The highest honor Federation

can bestow upon its leaders is the
