MovingForward2018 ANNUAL REPORT
3 2018 Annual Report
Our Mission is the prevention of domestic violence through the protection and empowerment of the victim, the rehabilitation of family members, the advocacy for social reform to prevent partner violence, and the education of the public about domestic violence and its consequences.
Our Vision is to create a community-wide culture that does not tolerate the presence of any form of family or partner violence…a culture that holds abusers accountable for their actions and victims blameless for their victimization…and a culture that works purposefully to foster healthy relationships, teaching all children the importance of mutual respect between partners.

2 2018 Annual Report
Message from Amy Komoroski Wiwi | Chair, JBWS Board of Directors
I am so pleased to share our annual report with you and the news of all that has been accomplished thanks to your support. 2018 was indeed a year of Moving Forward – with new leadership; new service initiatives; and a new logo, tagline and revised name to be more inclusive of all who need our services.
From a Board perspective, our greatest success was the smooth transition of our executive leadership. With Patty Sly moving on to embark on a new opportunity, the Board of Directors led a successful search to find the right person to lead JBWS on its continued path to success. Diane Williams, our new President and CEO, is passionate about our mission and brings more than 20 years of experience in non-profit human services and management in Morris County.
The Board is also proud of its work to give JBWS a new look! More than 40 years ago, we were founded as Jersey Battered Women’s Service. Today, we have outgrown our name and will do business only as JBWS, along with the tagline, Safety, Support and Solutions for Abuse. This change appreciates the equity built into our name and recognizes that 1) victims are not only “battered” but suffer from verbal, emotional abuse, and more and 2) men can be victims of abuse and benefit from the services of JBWS. Moving forward, all of our services will be provided regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation.
Most importantly, those we serve are moving forward toward safety and self-sufficiency. As you peruse the pages of this report, you will get the full picture of all that JBWS offers to ensure survivors are, as Christine writes in her story, “safe to pursue their dreams.”
These are exciting times for JBWS. Thank you for being a part of our journey.
2018 Annual Report 3
Message from Diane M. Williams | JBWS President & CEO
My first year at JBWS has been a truly humbling experience. The JBWS Board of Directors, a most engaged, invested and caring group of individuals has supported my transition enthusiastically. I work alongside some amazing people at JBWS, including a staff that consistently goes above and beyond for victims and their families and a group of dedicated volunteers, some of whom have been with JBWS for more than 25 years.
Several people have asked me what has been the biggest surprise since starting the position. I am struck by four revelations.
The first and most awe-inspiring of experiences has been meeting the courageous survivors who arrive at our safe house door feeling broken from the violence they have experienced. I am amazed at their resilience and strength to move forward toward safe futures.
The second is the breadth of JBWS’ reach. Without fail, following one of my many speaking engagements with community and corporate groups, I have been approached by someone in the room who tells me that JBWS helped their mother, sibling, friend, coworker, or themselves. Our impact is far reaching and touches the lives of so many.
Third is the overwhelming generosity of our community—a community of individuals, groups, and businesses that donate their time as volunteers, share their professional expertise, and support the mission of JBWS through generous monetary and in-kind donations.
And my last revelation is the magnitude of the problem and the staggering statistics. Intimate partner violence is estimated by the CDC to impact 1 in 4 women, 1 in 7 men, and 1 in 3 teens as the reported victims. These statistics are daunting. But thanks to your help, JBWS is well-positioned and committed to meet the ever-increasing demand for services. Thank you!
4 2018 Annual Report
It was a day like no other. I was physically assaulted and verbally abused by my partner while my 10-year-old son witnessed it and tried to step in to help me. The episode left my son and me feeling angry and confused.
Days later, I received another “I’m sorry” and “I love you speech” from him. But it was too late. His apologies had become empty promises and false acts of love.
I knew I had to remove my son and myself from this situation. But honestly, I didn’t know where to start. I had tried calling the police several times in the past and had started to file a restraining order once. But I dropped it, hoping he would change.
I never felt comfortable talking to anyone about the abuse. So no one really knew what was going on. It was as if I were living a double life.
It was only when I found the support of JBWS that I began to open up slowly about my feelings and what had been happening to me. Hearing the stories of other women who were living in my same shoes gave me hope. I remember when I finally declared “I was done and had enough!”
The counselor helped me and I was accepted into the safe house. Although I was sure I was doing the right thing, my emotions were running wild. I was sad, scared, and somewhat confused. I had no idea what to expect.
But upon arriving, I was welcomed, greeted and most importantly, not judged.
Coming to the safe house was surprisingly one of the best things that could have happened to my son and me.
After a few months, we were able to move into one of JBWS’ transitional living apartments.
The support and counseling that my son received from JBWS during such a trying time, encouraged and inspired him. He got to join 20 other campers for a week of a fun camp for kids who have witnessed violence. He learned to talk about his feelings, say when he feels mad, and to use self-control. And, most importantly, he learned that the abuse was never his fault and that he is appreciated and loved unconditionally.
For me, I gained strength from meeting other women who were going through the same process. I learned that all of the horrible and ugly things that my abuser said about me were not true. I gained a healthy self-esteem and self-worth.
However, my journey and my story are not finished. I am currently a senior pursuing my bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and intend to pursue Law School upon graduation. I want to help other women and children. Because their voices, like mine, have gone silent for way too long.
Thanks to the support of JBWS and their wonderful life-saving services, my son and I are safe to move forward and pursue our dreams.
I MOVED FORWARD
