MOWBRAY HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Issue No. 9 4th April 2018
ANZAC Day March - 25 April
This year MHPS will be involved in the ANZAC Day march alongside other schools from the Northern
region. Students are welcome to join me in walking from Princes Square to the cenotaph at Kings Park.
Students must be in full school uniform, meet at the fountain at Princes Square at 10.00 am, and be collected
from the grass area near the cenotaph at the conclusion of the march. Students will not be supervised by
staff at the Service. We will be invited to lay a wreath.
We hope to see many students in attendance, but understand that families do have their own ANZAC Day
traditions they undertake together.
Fire Education
Fire Fighter Adrian Crack from the Tasmania Fire Service is visiting our school in Week 1 and Week 2 of
Term 2 to present a Fire Safety Program to our students from Prep to Year 6. The program is an initiative

child in Tasmania. The program is part of the Tasmania Fire Services ongoing commitment to educate the
public for a fire safe Tasmania.

End of Term DVD Grades 3 - 6
Rated PG
On Thursday the 12th of April, students
from Grades 3-6 will be watching Wonder.
Based on the New York Times bestseller,
WONDER tells the inspiring and heart-
warming story of August Pullman. Born
with facial differences that, up until now,
have prevented him from going to a
mainstream school, Auggie becomes the
most unlikely of heroes when he enters the
local fifth grade. As his family, his new
classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their
compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will
unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born
to stand out.
Staff News
Families who have been part of our school for a while
will be aware that teachers all have an entitlement to
Long Service Leave. Personal circumstances determine
the period of long service taken. Sometimes it can be
a week, sometimes for much longer. As a school we
try to manage the Long Service Leave entitlements so
that classes continue to run smoothly and the learning
continues.
Fortunately we are able to replace our teachers with
some excellent relief staff who are familiar with our
students and loyal to our school. In the coming weeks,
we have the following teachers on Leave:
Mrs Mahar - 4/4/18 - 13/4/18
Mrs Cox - 4/4/18 - 13/4/18
Mrs Wood - 4/4/18 - 13/4/18
Miss Stevens - 9/4/18 - 3/518
Easter Hat Parade
Last Thursday 29th March, Prep and Prep 1 classes toured the
school showing off their Easter hats. It was such a success that
they proudly showed their creations at early childhood assembly
during the afternoon.
School Office Hours and Uniform Sales
Our Office is open from 8.00am - 4.00pm.
The Uniform Cupboard is open on Tuesdays from 8.45am
- 9.30am.
National Assessment Program –
Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2018
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and
Numeracy) commenced in Australian schools in 2008. Each
year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in common
national tests which assess:
Reading Writing Numeracy
Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and
punctuation)
The scheduled dates for the tests in 2018 are Tuesday 15th
May, Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 17th May.
The benefits of participating in NAPLAN testing:
NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to
progress through school and life such as reading, writing,
spelling, grammar and numeracy.
NAPLAN results provide valuable information on how your
child is progressing against national minimum standards of
literacy and numeracy skills expected for each year level.
The NAPLAN tests provide you as parents with an individual
report that shows your child’s results and a comparison of
your child’s performance against all other Australian students
in their year level.
Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine your child’s
areas of strength and where future focus is required and how
best to provide support or extension activities.
School teachers use the online NAPLAN Toolkit to analyse
your child’s results. The Toolkit provides detailed information
right down to the individual question with links to teaching
strategies.
Principals, senior staff and others use NAPLAN results to
inform school planning and to allocate resources and support
including informing decisions around targeted programs and
initiatives for individuals and groups.
The best way you can assist your child is by helping them to
feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests,
and assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity
to show what they have learned in class.
The Mowbray Health Centre car park is a private car
park for parents and children attending the centre.
Please do not park in the car park at other times.

ICT User Information Years 1- 6
The ICT Resources Acceptable Use Agreement
went home several weeks. The agreement will
help protect students, staff and the resources
by clearly stating what is acceptable and what is
not. Please read it with your child. The
agreement needs to be signed by the child and the parent
or carer.
If it has not been returned, please do so asap.
Brixhibition Lego Display
Congratulations to all our budding architects
and engineers who last week contributed to
our first Lego display.
Over thirty children spent many hours constructing their
entries and on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week,
classes visited the display and voted for their favourite.
Mowbray Heights Primary School will have two entries at
the Brixhibition Exhibition
in May.
ANZAC Day Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion of national
c o m m e m o r a t i o n . Commemorative services
held at dawn across the nation, honour the time of
the original landing.
It is a day when we all reflect
on the many different meanings of war.
The Flanders
poppy has been a part of
Armistice or Remembrance Day ritual
since the early 1920s and is also increasingly being used as
part of ANZAC Day observances.
