Who we surveyed
Efficiency gains at primary data centers
Outages
31% have experienced an IT downtime incident or severe service degradation in the past year
48% had an outage in their own site or a service provider’s in the past three years
Are 2N architectures more resilient?
Of those with a 2N architecture (cooling & power), 22% had an outage in the past year
• Rises to 35% in the past 3 years (for all failures, not just on-site facility failures)
Those with an N+1 architecture did not fare so well: 33% had an outage in the past year
• Rises to 51% in the past 3 years – higher than the overall average
Causes of downtime
80% report their most recent outage was preventable
Leading causes:• On-premises power failure 33%• Network failure 30%• IT/software error 28%• On-premises non-power failure 12%
31% had a failure at a third-party provider
Tracking recovery time & outage costs
Most downtime incidents last 1-4 hrs
43% did not calculate the cost of a ‘significant’ outage
Half estimate the costs to be less than $100,000
Eight respondents estimated costs over $10 million
Multi-site, multi-service disasters?
Increasingly, outages will create cascading failures across multiple sites & services
24% of respondents say incidents impacted services delivered from multiple data centers
69% single site
7% did not know
Hybrid IT: Visibility, accountability still lacking
61% say having workloads spread across on-premises, colo, and cloud data centers has made their organization more resilient
30% say less resilient (& 9% did not know)
Slightly more than half of the respondents have confidence in their organization’s ability to compare cost, risk, & performance between options
Maybe 24%
No 24%
Achieving or enhancing resiliency
68% regularly back up to a secondary site
to achieve or enhance resiliency
51% use near real-time replication to a
secondary site and 40% replicate to two
or more data centers
42% utilize disaster recovery as a service
36% use cloud-based high availability
services
Climate change is here, now what? 33% re-evaluating climate-dependent tech choices
19% preparing for increased severity & frequency of extreme weather
14% applying climate change models to site selection decisions
11% planning for increased flood risk
45% of respondents are not adapting policies for climate
change impacts
Rack densities rising?
31% of respondents don’t have any racks above 10 kW
For 28%, their highest-density rack is 10-19 kW; for 22% it is 20-29 kW
56% are using precision air cooling for highest density equipment. 30% use room-level cooling
But 14% using liquid cooling
DCIM is (finally) mainstream
54% of respondents have purchased some sort of commercial DCIM software
75% consider their deployment successful
47% looking to supplement with more tools
New wave of edge capacity
43% of respondents expect they will require edge computing capabilities
30% not sure27% will not require
38% of those who will require edge capacity expect to mostly deploy it in sites they own & operate
26% a mix of on-prem & colos14% mostly in public clouds11% mostly in colos
In our supply-side survey, 63% of providers believe that most of their customers will own micro modular (less
than 100 kW) edge data centers within 5 years
Looking ahead: Supply-side view
70% of suppliers believe that AI will be widely used in data centers
Just 23% believe that robots will replace significant human employment in data centers in the next 5-7 years
44% believe that a shortage of facilities staff will limit the data center industry’s growth in the coming 5-7 years
Data center staffing trends
56% of respondents have been in the industry for 20+ years
38% had difficulty finding qualified candidates for the open jobs
Hybrid IT adoption is driving a shift in skill set
Highly sought after skills:
