PROGRAM NOTES

Requiem in D minor, K 626 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)

Much has been written both fact and myth about the circumstances surrounding the Requiem, Mozart’s final commission, and one that he could not complete before his untimely death at the age of 35 Mozart was not known in Vienna as a composer of sacred music and had not been commissioned to do a work of this nature in the ten years that he was in residency in that city Count Franz von Walsegg, through an anonymous emissary dubbed the “man in gray,” commissioned the Requiem. The Count planned to have the Requiem performed annually in memory of his wife, who had died suddenly in February of that year (1791) Walsegg’s emissary was described in old biographies as a “mysterious, gaunt-looking stranger, tall, dark, and dressed all in gray ” But there was no mystery; it was Franz Anton Leitgeb, an employee of the count, who was tall, thin, and, because of his Turkish descent, dark-skinned Walsegg liked to pass off the music as his own compositions, paying them well and probably realizing that his little subterfuge was not quite a secret

In the hit play and later the movie Amadeus, much is made of Mozart’s obsession with death and the thought that the messenger and commission were from God and that the Requiem would be for his own death Mozart was exhausted from work and alcohol, financially embarrassed, and weak Before his death, Mozart was able to complete only the opening movement the Aeternam along with much of the Kryie and portions of the Sequence, the long poem beginning with Dies Irae and ending with the Lacrimosa For some of the remaining sections, he left drafts in varying states of completion; for the concluding movements, nothing Even though only a fraction of the Requiem was written by Mozart, it is numbered today among his most beloved and most frequently performed works Ultimately the completion was left to his friend and assistant, Franz Sussmayr, who took up the task after Mozart’s wife, Constanze, had petitioned three composers without success

The style of the Requiem is paralleled most noticeably in Mozart’s Magic Flute and not in his other church music written before he moved to Vienna Much of the writing is either richly contrapuntal or

PROGRAM NOTES

direct, simple, even hymn like Arias are conspicuously absent The four soloists are treated as a group, not as individuals, with one brief exception: the beginning of the Tuba mirum which Mozart sets as a dialogue between baritone and solo trombone Trombones are heard throughout much of the Requiem They were associated then with church music, not with the symphony, as they would be from Beethoven on For Mozart, they always pointed to the presence of the Divine

Early writers on Mozart were unanimous in their belief that this work marked a new direction, away from opera and the symphony towards a reform of church music The new style, as they saw it, would banish operatic display and blend ancient polyphony with modern symphonic ideas of form Had Mozart really started a fundamental rethinking of his style? The Requiem could, in fact, substantiate this claim At all events, we are mistaken to think of this as a late work To him, it was simply the next work, the next commission He could not have known that it would be his last, and that he would not live to finish it

KyrieKyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison

Lord have mercy upon us Christ have mercy upon us Lord have mercy upon us

SequenzDies irae, dies illaSolvet saeclum in favilla,Teste David cum Sibylla

Quantus tremor est futurusQuando judex est venturusCuncta stricte discussurus

Tuba mirum spargens sonumPer sepulcra regionumCoget omnes ante thronum

Mors slopebit et natoraCum resurget creaturaJudicanti responsura

Liber scriptus profereturIn quo totum continetur,Unde mundus judicetur

Judex ergo cum sedebitQuidquid latet apparebit,Nil inultum remanebit

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus,Quem patronum togaturus,Cum vix justus sit securus?

Day of wrath, that dayWill dissolve the earth in ashes,As David and the Sibyl bear witness

What dread there will beWhen the Judge shall comeTo judge all things strictly

A trumpet, spreading a wondrous soundThrough the graves of all lands,Will drive mankind before the throne

Death and Nature shall be astonishedWhen all creation rises againTo answer to the Judge

A book, written in, will be brought forthIn which is contained everything that is, out of which the world shall be judged

When therefore the Judge takes His seat Whatever is hidden will reveal itself Nothing will remain unavenged

What then shall 1 say, wretch that I am,What advocate entreat to speak for me, When even the righteous may hardly be secure?

King of awful majesty,Who freely savest the redeemed,Save me, O fount of goodness

Remember, blessed Jesu,That I am the cause of Thy pilgrimage,Do not forsake me on that day

Seeking me Thou didst sit down weary,Thou didst redeem me, suffering death on the cross Let not such toil be in vain

Just and avenging Judge,Grant remissionBefore the day of reckoning

I groan like a guilty man Guilt reddens my face Spare a supplicant, O God

Thou who didst absolve Mary MagdaleneAnd didst hearken to the thief,To me also hast Thou given hope

My prayers are not worthy,But Thou in Thy merciful goodness grantThat I burn not in everlasting fire

Place me among Thy sheepAnd separate me from the goats,Setting me on Thy right hand

When the accursed have been confoundedAnd given over to the bitter flames,Call me with the blessed

I pray in supplication on my knees My heart contrite as the dust,Safeguard my fate

Mournful that dayWhen from the dust shall riseGuilty man to be judged Therefore spare him, O God Merciful Jesu,Lord Grant them rest
