INTRODUCTION

1.1. Aim:Deaf and dumb people use sign language for their communication but it

was difficult to understand by the normal people. The aim of this project is to reduce the barrier between them.

Sign language recognition system works on an algorithm for recognition of hand gestures with accuracy. Depending on the hand motions the output will be displayed on the LCD and also played through the speaker.

INDIVIDUAL BLOCKS

The block diagram mainly consists of1) Power supply:

It activates all the electronic equipments in the digital circuits required

INDIVIDUAL BLOCKS

2) Microcontroller:It is a chip through which we can connect many other devices and also

those are controlled by the program which burn into the chip.• 8KB on-chip program memory. • 128 bytes on-chip data memory.• 4 register banks.• 32 bidirectional I/O lines organized as four 8 bit ports.• Two multi mode 16 bit Timer/Counters.• 8 interrupts.

3) LCD (LIQUID CRYTAL DISPLAY)A LCD is a flat panel display, electronic visual display or video display

that uses the light modulate. We are using 16×2 LCD display for our project.

4) Flex sensorsFlex sensors are sensors that change in resistance depending on the

amount of bend on the sensor. They convert the change in bend to electrical resistance-the more the bend, the more the resistance value. They are usually in the form of a thin strip that vary in resistance.

5) ADC (Analog to Digital converter) An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a device that converts a

continuous physical quantity to a digital number that represents the quantity's amplitude. The MCP3208 is a 12bit, 8 channel, Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) Analogue to Digital Converter. It comes as an 16 pin DIP.

6) MAX232 The MAX232 is an integrated circuit that converts signals from an RS-

232 serial port to signals suitable for use in TTL compatible digital logic circuits. The MAX232 is a dual driver/receiver and typically converts the RX, TX, CTS and RTS signals.

It has 16 pins Operates Up To 120 kbit/s Low Supply Current . . . 8 mA Operates From a Single 5-V Power Supply

7) Voice processor:Voice processor is used to record audio and playback. We are using

APR33A3 IC.

8) Speakers :Speakers are one of the most common output devices used with computer

systems. Speakers are transducers that convert electromagnetic waves into sound waves.

9) Zigbee moduleZigBee is a technology of data transfer in wireless networks. It has low

energy consumption and is designed for multi-channel control systems, alarm systems, and lighting control. ZigBee is more economical than Wi-Fi while Bluetooth protocol also consumes more energy and has a greater scattering of parameters of conventionally compatible units. This is caused by the fact that Bluetooth does not have a unified data transfer standard. Still that does not mean that ZigBee is oriented towards autonomous use.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

a) Advantages: Eliminates the need of interpreter. Easy to incorporate and execute in any supporting operating system.

b) Disadvantages: System is trained on a limited database. Possibility of misinterpretation for closely related gestures.

CONCLUSIONS & FUTURE SCOPE

• Conclusions:Thus we can conclude that sign language recognition for deaf and dumb

people helps to communicate easily between normal people and deaf and dumb people.

• Future scope:Sign language recognition system can be implemented in many

application areas examples include accessing government websites whereby no video clip for deaf and dumb is available or filling out forms online whereby no interpreter may be present to help.
