MPC News April 2017
A step " outside our box" and feelings of anticipation,
excitement and wonder filled the thoughts as nine members
of McDonough Presbyterian stepped foot on Honduran
soil. One member felt completely at home. Others, a little
skeptical. But the main goal and focus of the entire group
was----spread the love of Jesus. The team consisted of Holly
Dubois, Beth Barlow, Ruth Rucker, Thad Patterson, Tracey
Patterson, Tim Wirt, Kara Rogers, Mary Katherine
Laverty and Jill Stroud. Michael Norton, from Honduras
Agape Foundation, joined us also.
We were on a mission, non-stop, to see where Jesus
was taking us.
The week was full of fun and laughter with children,
working hard building gates and painting, and teaching the
importance of brushing teeth. Days of sharing ,caring, and
teaching the love of Jesus as we also learned many things
from a different culture. The language was one we were not
comfortable with as we would struggle with our "southern
Spanish". But the international language we all knew was
simply a smile. Smiles said everything. The people were
warm and generous and always made us feel at home. They
shared whatever they had. Be it chicken soup, or donuts and
coffee, we were welcomed with open arms.
We visited the Tejeras community where the poorest of
poor lived. Homes , or shanties of cardboard, lined the busy
highway. Children of all ages were carrying their plastic
bowls and cups to the shelter where they received food five
days a week. Usually the only food , and then they would
share it with others in their homes, if there was enough.
These are children our church supports. These are children
that without our help, they would not be alive today. A very
much hopeless and a rather undesira-
ble place to live, but it is real.
As the team learned more about Hon-
duras Agape Foundation and their ministry
and support to the people of Honduras, it
was evident the students who were in the
educational program were thriving, and im-
proving their lives. Students that once were
a part of the "forgotten", now have a
chance in life. All due to the fact that some-
Honduras Mission Trip 2017
one wanted to help them. A simple calling----this child
needs help. HAF has done exactly that---changed a
child's life. This is truly a ministry where if one seed is
planted, God will make it grow.
As we arrived home, with a little sad and bitter-
sweet tingle in our hearts, we knew our mission was
not complete. We knew there will never be an end.
Poverty is a part of our lives. However, being
aware and taking the first steps of reaching out
to another land were with great anticipation. Steps
taken with an enormous feeling of confidence that we
ALL can make a difference-----just plant the seed.
Many thanks for the generous support of school supplies and health items, they were greatly appreciat-ed.
We will have a power point presentation about the trip to share with the congregation on Sunday, April 30 in the Chapel during the Sunday School hour.

Un-Christian Listening by Greg Smith
Can you imagine a church group that sometimes encourages you
to act in an un-Christian way? And that it might be fun?
Eleven prospective MPC Stephen Ministers are currently en-
gaged in 50 hours of intensive training, led by our MPC Stephen
Leadership team. When their training is complete, the Stephen
Ministers will act as a lay extension of our pastoral staff, reach-
ing out to members of our church family in a confidential, caring,
Christ-centered manner. Stephen Ministers aim to be “Jesus with
skin on,” a human reminder of the presence and love of Christ.
A large part of Stephen Ministry training involves role-playing,
getting actual experience in how to listen without judging as
Christ did. But, as we all know, it’s difficult to think about “what
would Jesus do.” Sometimes it’s easier to picture what Jesus
wouldn’t do. Some of the role-playing has asked Stephen Minis-
ter trainees to listen unsympathetically, to give advice, to sit in
judgment of others. Some of our trainees have embraced their
inner thespian, discovering that it’s much more fun to be the vil-
lain than the good guy! We are discovering that by doing the
opposite of what Christ would do in roleplay, we find out what
it’s like not to be heard. This makes us better prepared to do the
actual work of caring in Stephen Ministry.
We knew the 50 hours of training provided by the Stephen Min-
istry would be instructive, but we didn’t realize how much fun it
would be to be poor listeners (temporarily)!
