Purpose and Benefits of Internships

Purpose:

Demonstrate your understanding of the concepts and skills relevant to your area of specialization in public health

Benefits:

• 40% of employers surveyed indicated new hires completed an internship and/or co-op with their company (1)

• 73.7% of employers prefer candidates with relevant work experience; 55% of employers have a preference for internship/co-op experience (2)

Internship Policies

• Core classes must be completed

• 3 credit course – register under your Faculty Advisor

• A final grade (Pass/No Pass) will be awarded by the faculty internship advisor.

• Students that work full time:

– May complete the internship in the context of their job; but it must be shown that the 240 hours is working on something outside of the original job description

• No waivers granted - all MPH students must complete the internship


Internship Policies

• The focus must be public health and community not research or mainly administrative tasks

• Minimum of 240 contact hours during the semester (Cannot start before the first day of class and must be complete by the last day of classes, not exams)

• Complete all paperwork online in InternTrack

• International students have additional documents to complete (located online under MPH internships FAQS)

Internship Description and Agreement

YOU CANNOT REGISTER BEFORE TURNING THIS IN

• Submitted by you; your faculty advisor & site supervisor will need to approve it in InternTrack

• Identify MPH competencies (your internship learning objectives) and the activities you will do to accomplish that objective


Competencies to Include

The following 3 competencies should be included in every Internship Description and Agreement:

MPH 20: Identify key sources of epidemiologic data

MPH 21: Describe disease patterns according to person, place, and time

MPH 37: Describe steps and procedures for planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs, policies and interventions


Required Paperwork

• Midpoint Meeting Form – Complete the midpoint form to guide discussion with your faculty

advisor AND site supervisor

– Faculty advisor and site supervisor must sign off in InternTrack that you met

• Supervisor Midpoint Evaluation of the Intern

• Final Student Evaluation of the internship

• Final Site Supervisor Evaluation of the Intern

• The final Paper:

– 5 page minimum

– Addresses the objectives, activities and competencies

• You must attend the internship poster session the semester you complete your internship

– Spring Semester: Friday, May 3rd, Noon – 1pm, RPHB107

– Summer: Friday, August 2, 1:15 PM, RPHB 107

• Available at most office supply stores

• Lessons Learned (results, professional or personal growth, academic achievements, etc.)

• *This does not have to be professionally done. You may print out and adhere the

information to the poster board yourself.


Alternative Poster Session

Eligible Students: those that are still completing internships internationally/out of state, unable to attend due to medical reasons, and online MPH students

Request form is in InternTrack – due at least 2 weeks prior to the Internship Poster Session

Alternative Poster Session:

An audio PowerPoint presentation uploaded to Blackboard; plain slides must also be uploaded

How Do I apply?

• You must have an approved resume and cover letter in the system

• Utilize the Career Planning Guide when creating these documents

Can I find my own internship?

• Yes

• The internship is meant to give you exposure and experience in your area of interest. As long as you follow the requirements and policies of the internship, you can create your own.

• You will be responsible for making sure your site supervisor gets registered as a preceptor in InternTrack


Timeline

• Dates will also be posted in InternTrack, as your homepage as an intern is the timeline

SPRING

• Midpoint Meeting: Due by March 8th

• Internship Poster Session:

– May 3rd from noon – 1pm in RPHB 107

• Deadline to Apply in DT: April 3rd

• Request Hold to be lifted: Before May 10th

• Log in to InternTrack and complete your contact information and the semester of your internship in the Internship Description and Agreement

• Identify which competencies you do not yet feel confident in, paying particular attention to those in your department

• Create or Update your resume and upload to Dragon Trail

• Check for internships as they are added to the system

– The RSS feed updates every 24hours from Dragon Trail
