The Bharathiar University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Year 1982, under the Bharathiar University Act I of 1981 (Tamil Nadu University Act I of 1982). jurisdiction of Bharathiar University or
Research Institutions recognized by Bharathiar
University with a minimum of 55% of marks
in the Master’s degree. Such candidates shall
produce a No-objection certificate from the
Employer or Head of the Institution (in case of
Educational Institutions).
ii. All teachers working in colleges affiliated
to Bharathiar University are eligible.
Candidates working as guest lecturers on
consolidated pay are also eligible to pursue
M.Phil. (Part-time) programme provided they
produce an NOC and service certificate from
their respective colleges.
iii. Candidates working in colleges affiliated to
Universities other than Bharathiar University
have to produce a No objection Certificate and
service certificate from the Head of the
Institution / University.
iv. T.C. need not be insisted for admission to
part-time M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes.
Eligibility for M.Phil. / Ph.D. Programme
All candidates should have passed a two-year PG degree course after 3-year Bachelor’s degree
course and Higher Secondary course of 2-year duration after 10-year SSLC (10+2+3+2) or one year
Pre-degree after 11-year SSLC (11+1+3+2) or 10-year SSLC plus 3-year Diploma plus 2- year UG
and 2 year PG (10+3+2+2). Candidates who have undergone 4-year degree programmes shall also
be eligible for Ph.D. programme provided they do one year Compensatory programme and earn 30
credits or equivalent (10+2+4+1). Candidates who have passed the PG degree examination with
less than 17 years of total duration of study are not eligible for admission to
M.Phil. / Ph.D. programme.
For University Departments, admissions for Ph.D. Programme can be made two times in ayear, i.e., January, and October. Candidates should submit their applications on or before 31st
October for January session and 31st July for October session.
For Colleges and approved research institutions, admissions for Ph.D. Programme can be made
four times in a year i.e., January, April, July and October. Candidates should submit their
applications on or before 31st October, 31st January, 30th April and 31st July for January, April, July
and October sessions respectively.
Candidates shall be registered for M.Phil. programme for one session only in a year,commencing on the first day of October.

2. DURATION
FULL – TIME:
The duration of the M.Phil. Full Timeprogramme shall extend over a period of oneacademic year (12 months) commencing fromOctober 1st .
PART – TIME:
The duration of the M.Phil. Part-timeprogramme shall extend over a period of twoacademic years commencing from 1st October.
Maximum period for completion (includingextension period) of the M.Phil. Programme istwo years in the case of Full-time candidatesand three years in the case of Part-timecandidates.
3. COURSE OF STUDY
The course of study for the M.Phil. degreeprogramme shall consist of three written papersunder Part-I and a Dissertation under Part-II ofthe programme.
Written Papers (under Part-I)
Paper I : Research Methodology(Research Methods of the concerned discipline)
Paper II : Research Trends in theconcerned discipline / Advances in theconcerned discipline/Title decided in theProgramme
Paper III : Special Paper (Pertaining tothe area of specialization chosen by thecandidate under a guide)
Dissertation (under Part II)
Candidates shall be required to choose aresearch problem in his/her chosen area ofresearch and submit a dissertation incorporatingthe results of his/her investigation, carried outunder the supervision of a recognizedsupervisor.
4. REGISTRATIONAll candidates who are admitted into the
M.Phil. programme (Full-time or Part-time) willbe registered under the supervision ofrecognized supervisors to do research in thechosen topics.Candidates shall be registered for M.Phil.programme for one session only in a year,commencing on the first day of October,subject to the condition that the candidates soregistered, shall be permitted to appear forPart I examination only after completing theminimum period of six months in the case offull-time registration and twelve months, in thecase of part-time registration.
A candidate applying for registration shall do so,
specifying the broad field of research, which
shall normally be one related to the field of
specialization chosen in his/her PG degree.
5. Guidance :
Every candidate admitted into the M.Phil./
Ph.D. Research programme shall be registered
under a qualified and recognized guide in the
Department / Institution, where the candidate
is admitted for the research programme. The
research guide shall guide the candidates,
throughout his/her research programme and
monitor his / her progress.
A maximum of FOUR candidates be permitted
to register under one supervisor at any point of
time in addition to the permitted EIGHT Ph.D.
candidates.
6.Procedure for Securing Admission
to Research Programmes
Candidates desirous of seeking admission to the
above said Research Programmes offered in the
University Departments, Affiliated Colleges and
Recognised Research Institutions should apply for
admission in the prescribed application form,
to be obtained from the Registrar, Bharathiar
University, Coimbatore – 641 046 on payment
of Rs.500/- for M.Phil and Rs. 600/- for Ph.D.
in the form of a Bank of India Challan credited
to the General Fund Accounts of Bharathiar
University or a Demand Draft on a Nationalised
Bank drawn in favour of the Registrar,
Bharathiar University, Payable at Coimbatore,
with a requisition indicating clearly, the
Programme (M.Phil. or Ph.D.,) for which the
application is required.
The candidates before applying are advised to
ascertain the availability of vacancies in the
concerned Departments / Colleges or with the
Guide, where the candidates proposes to register
for the Research Programme.
Candidates shall apply for the M.Phil. /
Ph.D. programme only after qualifying for
their Post-graduate degree, before the last
date, failing which their applications will be
rejected.

7. How to Apply
The Application consists of two copies:
First Copy: To be submitted by the
candidates to the University. (Incase of
downloaded application along with the cost of
application and Registration Fee of Rs. 500/-
and 600/- for M.Phil. and Ph.D. respectively).
Second Copy: To be sent by the candidates to
the Colleges / University department concerned
along with the Xerox copy of the remittance
proof of payment of the cost of application
and Registration Fee. The College shall make
use of the second copy of the application for
selecting the candidates. Hereafter University
will not send applications to the concerned
colleges / Departments.

The applications submitted by candidates forgetting admission into a particular Institution/ College cannot be transferred to anotherInstitution / College. If the candidate wishesto apply for admission in more than one College/ Department, he / she shall submit separateapplications for each College / Department.
The applications submitted for admissionto Ph.D. programme cannot be transferred toM.Phil. Course and Vice-versa.
Once the application submitted to theUniversity / Colleges for a particular sessionshall not be considered for subsequentsession(s).
Incase, the programme to which applied isnot offered in the concerned Institution, theapplication will be rejected.

8. Selection Procedure (M.Phil. and Ph.D.)
The following will be the Selection
Procedure:
i. The number of seats for Ph.D./M.Phil. each
time, shall be notified in University website or
by advertisement. Admission shall be made
through an entrance test followed by an
interview. While granting admission, the
reservation policy of the Tamil Nadu
government will be followed. However, UGC /
CSIR (JRF) / SLET / GATE / teacher fellowship
holders and those already working in funded
projects with Fellowship need not appear for
entrance test. Such candidates shall be directly
admitted to doctoral programme.
2. The eligible candidates will be ranked
according to the marks secured in the
qualifying examinations and personal
interview conducted to assess the aptitude
of the candidate for research and his/her
academic competence and subject to
satisfying the eligibility conditions.
3. The selection committee shall consist of
the HOD and eligible guides of the faculty.
4. After the students have been admitted the
guides be allotted in the eligible guides
meeting. The same be intimated and a
copy be sent to the Registrar, along with
the waiting list in the specified proforma.
5. The University shall verify the originals
submitted by the candidates and the
colleges shall be informed to bring the same
for verification on a particular date.
6. The College and departments should also
notify the existing vacancies in their
common notice board and department
notice boards and publish the same in the
website so as to enable the students to
apply for the disciplines of their choice.
7. Depending on the number of vacancies the
candidates will be selected by following the
communal reservations as prescribed by the
Government of Tamilnadu i.e.
a. 31% for Open Competition
b. 30% for Backward Classes within this 3.5%
for Muslims.
c. 20% for Most Backward Classes and
Denotified, tribes.
d. 18% for Scheduled Castes (3% for
Arunthathiar) and 1% for Scheduled Tribes.
The candidates will be selected foradmission to the Research Programme basedon their academic performance conducted toassess the aptitude of the candidate for researchand his/her academic competence subject tosatisfying the eligibility conditions.
The candidates selected for admission tothe M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes in the UniversityDepartments shall be required to submit theOriginal transfer certificate and conductcertificate, issued by the Institution last studied,statements of marks and Provisional/Degreecertificates of Post Graduate and M.Phil.Degree Courses. Hence, the candidates areadvised to retain with them sufficient numberof attested photocopies of the certificates,before surrendering the originals.
Registration for the Ph.D. Programme
(Full-Time/Part Time)
A candidate who has qualified for theMaster’s Degree in the faculties of Arts,Sciences, Fine Arts, Commerce, Education,Social Science and Management of thisUniversity or equivalent thereto. Candidatespassing atleast 17 years of study under anyoneof the categories prescribed under Eligibilitysupra are also eligible to Register.
a) Full-time scholar (with or without stipend/ fellowship). Research fellows / Researchassistants / Technical assistants / Projectassistants / Project Fellows / Researchassociates / appointed in the research projectsfunded by recognized agencies / Government/ industries are also eligible to register for Ph.D.on a full-time basis in the same Departmentprovided they satisfy the eligibility criteria laid in.
b) Part-time scholar (teacher or non-teacher)
The candidates belonging to any one of thecategories of full time employment as teacher,scientist, research fellow, research assistant,technical assistant and project assistant mayregister at University Departments, AffiliatedColleges, Research Institutions, or R & DCentres / Laboratories coming under theterritorial jurisdiction of Bharathiar University.
c) A candidate already holding a Ph.D. degreein a discipline / subject specialization is eligibleto register for a second Ph.D. degree in anotherdiscipline / subject specialization.

A candidate having a minimum 55% (5%

a) “A teacher working in a Department of the
University or of an affiliated College of

b) Candidate working as a Guest Lecturer /
Temporary Faculty at Govt. Colleges and Govt.
Aided Colleges in Tamilnadu and Other States.
c) Any Chartered Accountant / Cost
Accountant / Company Secretary and other
professionals with a minimum period of two
years of experience after obtaining their
professional qualification is eligible for Ph.D.
registration. The subject for registration
may be the same as that of the professional
qualifications in the case of ACA / AICWA /
ACS. The guides may be from the
Departments of Commerce,
Management Studies, Economics or
concerned subjects.
d) For candidate other than a teacher
candidate, any permanent staff in a
Government Office/ Private or Public Ltd.,
Company / a recognized factory /
institution / research institution /
Educational Institution / business who has
successfully completed probation and holds
a Master’s degree with a minimum of 50%
of marks in the qualifying examination (staff
includes Board of Directors, Proprietor and
Partner) are eligible for Ph.D registration in
the relevant discipline.
i. Recognized factory means an industrial
establishment and regulated by the factories
Act.
ii. Recognized institution means any institution
registered with the Registrar of Societies
and has been duly audited by a recognized
auditor for the last three years from the
date of application and duly supported by
an audit certificate.
iii. Recognized business means a businessorganization duly registered withCommercial Tax Department and threeyears standing in their business.
iv. Private / Public Ltd., Company registeredunder the Companies Act.
Candidates Registered for Ph.D. (Part time)outside Tamilnadu
Candidates out side Tamilnadu be allowedto register for Part time Ph.D. subject toproduction of NOC from HOD/Head of theEmployer where the candidate is employed. Anamount of Rs. 5,000/- will be collected asspecial fee from such candidates other thanTamilnadu.
e) Transfer Certificate need not be insistedfor admission to part-time M.Phil. / Ph.D.programmes.
Under independent registration:
a) Teachers with M.Phil. or equivalentqualification, working in the Departmentsof this University or in colleges affiliated tothis University with atleast four years ofteaching / research experience afterobtaining M.Phil. degree (total experienceput in Bharathiar University and otherUniversities will be taken into account), mayregister for Ph.D. without a guide, as parttime scholars.
However, those registered under thiscategory of independent registration, can optto work under a recognized guide at any stageafter registration, with the prior permissionof the University and on payment of a ‘statuschange fee’.
b) In case of lab oriented programmes, if thedepartment to which the candidate belongsto, is not recognized for research byBharathiar University, the candidate isrequired to produce a certificate from othersuch recognized departments of theaffiliated college/Institutions indicatingclearly that he/she will be permittedto utilize the facility available there.
c) For laboratory subjects candidates underindependent registration shall be included underthe strength of the recognized researchdepartment.
d) Any requisition for the appointment ofresearch supervisors in case of candidates undrindependent category, after submission ofthesis be not entertained.

SCHOLARSHIPS / FELLOWSHIPS :The Govt. of India scholarship for SC-ST

offered University Research Fellowship (URF)
and the Councial for Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR) and Indian council of Social
Sciences Research (ICSSR) are to be offered.

REGULATIONS:
The candidates will be governed by the respective M.Phil. and Ph.D. regulations of the
University, amended from time to time.
OTHER AMENITIES:
The Library is well equipped and functions from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Computer centre has
internet facility with 30 Mbps connectivity. The Health centre and the sports stadium have modern
equipments. The University runs hostels, for men and women scholars. There is a Post-Office, a
Bank and two Canteens in the Campus. There is also a National Service Scheme (NSS) which has
been functioning effectively.
The University buses ply during morning and evening, on all working days for transporting
the staff and students. The city bus service to the University is also available, and the frequency of
