Mud Kitchen - Floreat Park Primary Kindergarten Please pass on our thanks to all at the Mosman Park Men’s Shed, especially Paul O’Malley, for making us a mud kitchen from recycled materials. The children at kindergarten are enjoying it and using it in their play, as a sink to wash the toys, as an imaginary car wash, and as a home to toy penguins. We very much appreciate the community involvement in making our kindergarten a wonderful place to learn and grow. This month Sam selected Mosman Park Mens Shed as the recipient of $1,000 donated by his customers. If you are looking for a café to go to please support Daisies and take the opportunity whilst there to thank Sam for his efforts. June Health SeminarMen when faced with redundancy or retirement, particularly professional men, can suffer a huge loss of self-esteem.    We may no longer be at the pinnacle of our career and we may feel we  are no longer recognised. Will you view the next 20 years as “ a conveyor belt to the graveyard” or can this period of our life be and enjoyable and fruitful experience for us all?  These are key questions put to me by Paul Robinson from the Bucket List Group of Cottesloe.  Paul attended our day-long seminar on Mens Health held on Thursday June 14th.Paul’s Impressions  of MPMS are as summarised below:  • Wow what an impressive facility! The setting on Perrott reserve is stunning. The facility is

well organised and many ‘breakout’ areas are  for multiple uses.• Very welcoming group of guys• Thank you Bob Peterson for showing me around.• The hospitality appears very natural.  Facility appears to be well funded and well equipped• The MPMS members are caring of the facility …yet very sharing of the ‘assets’.• I understand that speaker experts are increasingly a regular feature of the Men’s Shed monthly itinerary. He  looks forward to a further meeting with your members at your popular Tuesday morning tea. This seminar was rich in information relating to our mental and physical wellbeing.  Presentations were all outstanding.  I  was particularly impressed with the low tech but very effective presentation from Diabetes Australia.   A cloth manikin representing the digestive and circulatory system as shown showed the functioning of the intestines, pancreas, liver and functions for the production of insulin, its transfer into the blood stream to break down glucose for energy production and the role of the liver in storage of surplus insulin. The presentation from Alzheimer’s WA reinforced the understanding that this is a degenerative disease of the brain and that while we understand what it is we have made little progress with cures.  Dementia in its 100 forms are common symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s. As with most ageing related diseases. every presentation pointed to the importance of lifestyle factors including nutrition, rest, exercise and substance abuse.      We were also treated to a presentation from “VisAbilty WA” formally “The Association for the Blind”.    This organisation now deals with all matters of vision impairment in WA.  The organisation is funded by donations with some support coming from Government.  Member Tony Lalor was so moved by the presentation that he has volunteered to adopt a guide dog puppy in training.

Jo Milios showed very effective Physiotherapy to manage men’s incontinence and pelvic pain often associated with prostate problems. Finally Dean Dyer presented a moving presentation of mental health that touched our President George Klug who asked Dean the question how did we miss the onset of a suicide of a shed member that gutted us all.All in all it was a superb seminar.Vic Power – Health Rep

Cardiac Surgeon v Motor Mechanic.A Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a LS460 when he spotted a well-known cardiac surgeon in his shop.  The surgeon was there waiting for  the service manager to come and  take a  look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?"The cardiac surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look  at this engine. I opened its heart,  took the valves out, repaired or  replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new.  So how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M when you and I are doing basically the same work The cardiac surgeon paused, leant over and whispered to the mechanic..... “Try doing it with the engine running.”

June “Health Talk”.A board room at full capacity for this exceptionally interesting talk was even a surprise to speaker Marco Benato and facilitator Captain Malcolm Kates who are both members of the shed. Commercial aircraft  maintenance in Australia follows strict European Standard Part 66 (B1 and B2) for mechanical maintenance and avionics respectively.  Scheduled maintenance is based mainly upon “cycles”  (take offs) and “hours”.  Apart from these procedures modern commercial aircraft are monitored by the central maintenance group while flying using VHF and Satcom Data Links.Maintenance and Operations are separate entities, with pilots mainly communicating with maintenance through the flight log.  Maintenance follows strict CASA regulations and procedures. Licensed Maintenance Engineers hold the maintenance system together and are directly responsible for aircraft maintenance safety.  Virgin employs 600 licenced engineers in Australia (36 in Perth). An interesting fact revealed was the evolvement of engine technology.  Two engine long flite aircraft have evolved from earlier direct exhaust thrust engines as first appeared on the Boeing 707 to the most modern Boeing Dreamliner which have up to 90 percent bypass for thrust.  The large fans that surround the power turbine core are able to rotate at supersonic velocity within the engine casing (unlike a propeller)   delivering Mach 0.8 performance at high altitude and much improved fuel efficiency.  Modern Jet engines are also staggeringly reliable with up to 30,000 hours on running without major outages.  This evolvement has resulted in the low cost long haul jet transport that we enjoy today. Thank you Marco for a superb talk. Vic Power.
