Exercise 2
Part 1: Analysis of NAR001.nar
Step Action
1 Open NAR001.nar with the off-array Navisphere Manager 2 LUNs 500 and 501 are active. At around 48 minutes into the run, the write-aside
value for LUN 500 is changed from 2048, the default, to 255.
3 Note the utilization of the LUNs. Note the Total Throughput for each LUN. Does the utilization match the throughput? Explain your answer.
4 Note the LUN queue lengths. What does this suggest about the I/O access pattern?
5 Note the response times of the LUNs. What caused the shape of the curve at the 48 minute mark?
6 Note the read cache hit ratio and the write cache hit ratio for each LUN. What type of I/O access pattern is suggested here for each LUN? Look at disk statistics to confirm your hypothesis.
7 Note the read, write and total bandwidth for LUN 500
8 Deselect LUN 501.
9 Expand LUN 500 to show disks, and select all disks. Do they all show the same utilization? Explain your answer.
10 Compare disk utilization with LUN utilization. Is there a difference? Why?
11 Compare disk bandwidth with LUN bandwidth. Is there a difference? Why? How do the values compare near the end of the test?
12 View other parameters – SP dirty pages, etc
13 In this example, performance was altered by changing the write-aside value for the LUN. Would turning off write caching have accomplished the same goal?

on? Which SP owns them? Q3 Which LUNs in the range LUN 600 to LUN 607 are busy? Which disks are they on?
Which SP owns them? Which host(s) are they assigned to? Is ALUA supported on these hosts?
Q4 View the utilization, bandwidth and throughput for LUNs 600 and 601 and their disks. Check queue length, response time, read size and write size.
Q5 What caused the behavior change in the LUNs? Compare the performance of other busy LUNs before making a final decision.

Exercise 6
Part 1: Expected disk crossing rate
Step Action
1 A CLARiiON LUN is formatted with the default element size. What is this element size in kB?
Q1 What is the expected disk crossing rate for an I/O size of 8 kB? Q2 What would it be if the I/O size was 32 kB? Q3 Does the disk crossing rate depend on RAID type? On stripe size? On R/W ratio?
CLARiiON Performance Workshop Lab Guide

Exercise 6
Part 2: Performance impact of disk crossings
Step Action
1 Use the numbers you calculated in Part 1 to determine the reduction in work done by a RAID 5 LUN, and by a RAID 6 LUN, with 100% writes of the different sizes you used in Part 1. Assume that all writes are random.
Hint If performing a certain number of host I/Os used to require x disk I/Os, and now requires y disk I/Os, then your performance has dropped (roughly) to x/y.
Q1 How would your answers change if the host I/O access pattern had a R/W ratio of 1:1?

Exercise 7
Part 1: Cache page size impact
Step Action
1 What is the advantage of using a 16 kB page size? What changes if a page size of 2 kB is used?
2 A host generates 256 kB sequential I/Os. Which page size would be most efficient? Would this change if the I/Os were random? What if the I/O size was 8 kB?
3 Would you expect to see a performance difference if you performed testing with 512 byte and 64 kB I/Os, and 2 kB or 16 kB cache pages? Verify by looking at the 4 NAR files: NAR004A.nar – 2 kB cache page size, 512 byte I/O size NAR004B.nar – 2 kB cache page size, 64 kbyte I/O size NAR004C.nar – 16 kB cache page size, 512 byte I/O size NAR004D.nar – 16 kB cache page size, 64 kbyte I/O size
Q1 Are these the results you expected? If not, explain why not.

Exercise 9
Part 1 : Comparison of reads/writes from different RAID types
Step Action
1 Open NAR009A.nar and NAR009B.nar with the off-array Navisphere Manager. NAR009A.nar has the data for the RAID 1/0 LUN, and NAR009B.nar has the data for the RAID 5 and RAID 6 LUNs. Active LUNs are 500, 600 and 1000.
2 View the performance of each LUN. Pay attention to bandwidth, throughput, response time, and average disk seek distance. Note the I/O size and the R/W ratio.
Q1 How many ‘equivalent’ disks does each LUN have? Is this comparison of RAID types fair?
Q2 What is the read size and write size for each LUN? What sizes do you see for the physical disks? Explain any difference you see.
Q3 The host is performing 2 MB operations, verified by checking with perfmon. Is that what you see at the CLARiiON? Explain your answer.
Q4 If performance was your sole objective, which RAID type would you use for I/O access patterns of this nature?

Exercise 10
Part 1: metaLUN stripe element size
Step Action
1 A metaLUN uses 3 LUNs of the same size: a LUN from a 4+1 RAID 5 group, a LUN from an 8+1 RAID 5 group, and a LUN from a 14+1 RAID 5 group. If LUN element sizes are the default, and metaLUN stripe element size multiplier is left at the default of 4, how much data will be written to each LUN in a single metaLUN stripe if each of the different component LUNs is used as the base LUN?
2 A metaLUN consists of 3 LUNs: a LUN from a 4+1 RAID 5 group, a LUN from an 8+1 RAID 5 group, and a LUN from a 14+1 RAID 5 group. If LUN element sizes are the default, and metaLUN stripe element size multiplier is left at the default of 4, how much data will be written to each LUN in a single metaLUN stripe?
Q1 Do your answers for Part 1 and Part 2 differ? Do you think data size differences will affect performance?

Exercise 11
Part 1: RAID Group defragmentation
Step Action
1 RAID Group 5, an 8+1 RAID 5 RAID Group, has become fragmented. There are 2 LUNs on the RAID Group. LUN 500 starts at the beginning of the RAID Group, and has a size of 10,485,763 blocks (just over 5 GB). LUN 501 starts at the beginning of stripe 25,000. A defragment operation is started. Why is no parity recalculation needed when moving the LUN 501 data? Note: to determine LUN starting and ending positions, change block size to stripe size.
