BUY IN GLASSSUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDUSTRY!!

Why buy products packaged in glass?

There are two major -- and logical -- reasons for you and your family to think glass when you do your own shopping.

First: As a member of the community, you show pride and support of your glass-making neighbors, and a healthy regard for your economic community.

The second important reason for choosing glass is glass itself. Glass is quality packaging, whether you're buying pickles or pop. Food and drinks taste better in glass. And, after being opened, glass containers are easily resealed to preserve freshness. What's more, you can see what you are buying...a point that the majority of consumers appreciate.

Glass manufacturing was born in Brockway. We have been producing glass containers since 1907. As a Company and a community we all share in the success and responsibility of supporting local industries, like ourselves. We thank and praise those who have played an integral role in our past, present, and future.

BROCKWAY OLD FASHIONED FOURTH OF JULY50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Knowing your history, that is knowing where you came from and what created thathistory is important to all human beings. Children study about the beginnings of ourcountry in grade school with Gen. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, ThomasJefferson and our other Founding Fathers. We research our ancestry to find out whereour beginnings were in the “Old World” and in the “New World”. We learn the historyof our parents and grandparents when to them it wasn’t even history. This gives us a sense of who we are and where we are going. It is the same with this festival we celebrate each July 4th; something very unique to our neck of the woods and something inwhich we all take pride. So, how did this come about?

Several members of the Brockway Volunteer Hose Company had discussed a celebration atvarious Hose Company meetings over a period of time but nothing formal had been drawn upthough the discussions were always positive in nature. During the annual Hose CompanyBanquet in January 1967 the desire to take on such a task would be presented to all members in attendance, since many members belonged to other organizations such as the Kiwanis,Jaycees, Chamber and Legion. Bob Stowman, the MC for the evening, informed the membersof the possibility of starting a committee. A formal meeting would be held at the end of February at the Hose Company.

So it began on Monday February 27, 1967 a group of individuals representing the Brockway Kiwanis, Brockway Jaycees, Contessa Matilda Lodge, Chamber of Commerce,American Legion Auxiliary, Brockway Recreation Board and the Brockway Volunteer Hose Co.met at the Hose House to discuss the feasibility of a July 4th Celebration in Brockway. BobStowman from the Hose Co. acted as Chairman with Ralph Durbin from the Brockway Recordacting as Secretary pro-tem for their first meeting. According to the minutes “The project was discussed from many angles including finances and fireworks.” Another meeting was scheduledfor Monday March 27, 1967 to select officers and committees.

During the second meeting 22 individuals met to discuss the project. Thomas Shields waselected as General Chairman, William Sabatose as Vice Chairman, Doris Squires as Secretaryand Gary Keister as Treasurer. Floyd Fustine suggested the committee be named “Old Fashioned Fourth of July” which was accepted by the new committee. Decision was madeto contact all organizations and service groups in the area to be a part of the celebration. Additionally, discussions led to a Patriotic Speaker, food concessions, financing, use of the Recreation Grounds and swimming pool and the purchase of fireworks for around $1,200.00.The next meeting was set for April 17, 1967.

By the third meeting over $900.00 was raised from various businesses and groups. Because ofthis large sum and anticipation of additional monies, it was decided to incorporate and open abank account. Motion was brought forth and seconded to officially name the committee Brockway Area Old Fashioned 4th of July with Ross Ferraro’s office handling the necessarypaperwork. Other items discussed included concession booths, games, firemen’s water battle, music, pony rides, having the girl and boy scouts give out hand bills, John McNulty chairingthe Patriotic Program, a baseball game, publicity, parade and fireworks supplied by Ohio Fireworks Manufacturing Display Company.

By May 8, 1967, the new group was organized under the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Brockway Area Old Fashioned 4th of July, Inc. with Thomas E. Shields,William J. Sabatose, Gary R. Keister, Doris Squires and Robert Stowman affixing their sealto the incorporation papers.

Over the next two months various committees met on their own then reported back to the maincommittee to discuss their finances, other events and participation of different bands and groupsin the parade. Justice Michael A. Musmanno - Justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvaniawould speak promptly at 4:00 pm at the Legion Memorial in the park at no cost. The glass company would provide litter bags for the park and Frank Varischetti agreed his companywould clean up following the celebration.

A booklet, to be given to businesses in Brockway and the surrounding area, was discussed and approved to be handed out so visitors knew what to expect. Local merchants could place an adfor 1/8 of a page for the small sum of $25.00. Later on it was decided to change the size to 1/4 of a page for the same $25.00. This booklet would be printed at no charge by Brockway Glassthen assembled by Gray’s Printing in Falls Creek for $25.00. “Let Freedom Ring”, the topic of the first Patriotic Speaker would be the words written accross the first booklet. Inside the committee listed the day’s events starting with an Old Timer’s Ball Game between the Hitless Wonders vs Aches & Pains, firemen’s water battle, music, free swimming, Jaycee’s children’sgames, bingo, Saddle & Harness Club pony rides, another ball game between Brockway Braves vs DuBois Rockets, Patriotic Program, Independence Day Parade, band concert by the BrockwayRover Band, modern music by The Rogues (for the younger set in the Tennis Courts) for $85.00,a drawing for two $25.00 US Savings Bonds before the biggest and loudest fireworks displayever seen in these parts followed by another set by The Rogues. What would a festival be without food: Kiwanis’ Barbequed Chicken, Brockway Firemen and Ladies Auxiliary hot dogsand hamburgers, hoagies and ice cream by the Jaycees and ice cold watermelon by Local 110.

The Parade Committee reported that so far the Brockway Area High School Bands, Girl Scouts,Brownies, Boy Scouts, Little League, a military unit from DuBois, 10 antique cars, Color Guard,Litter Bug Pillory sponsored by Brockway Glass, PTA float, fire engine and the FFA wouldparticipate. Total cost would be $135.00 with $75.00 going to the high school band. The parade would run along Main Street from 7th Avenue to the intersection of Routes 219 & 28.

Everything was set, all committees reporting in making sure they were ready. By June 26th theCommittee had on hand $2,185.50 of which $1,300.00 went to the fireworks display. The onlything left was to meet on July 3rd in the park to go over the final details before the big event tookplace.

As anyone who has served on a committee knows, it takes many different people with different skills and mind sets to make an event happen. The first celebration was no different. A total of 8official and one unofficial meetings were held, which brought together many different people asyou can see below. These were the people who made a tradition happen 50 years ago by just onethought and one idea - to celebrate our Independence in an Old Fashioned way. A very humble beginning, a small idea, and the work of some very creative people began a tradition that today has grown into a very large and family oriented celebration. Countless people have chaired and worked on numerous committees over the years to bring this celebration to fruition. It is an honor and a privledge to take part in this celebration all becausesomeone back in 1967 thought celebrating our American Independence would be a great idea.

TROLLEY SCHEDULE

FIREWORKS PUBLIC DISPLAY SAFETY TIPS The fire department is usually responsible for the public's safety when a large scale Fireworks display is presented. The actual firing of the display is conducted by a trained pyrotechnic operator and crew. These professionals know and comply with all state and local regulations. Spectators should obey all ushers or monitors and respect the safety barriers set up to allow the trained operator room to safely do his job. Resist any temptation to get close to the actual firing site. Although it rarely happens, it is possible that a firework component might fall to the ground without exploding. The public should be cautioned not to touch these fireworks. If they happen to find any which have not exploded, they should immediately contact the local fire or police departments. Pets have very sensitive ears and the booms and bangs associated with a fireworks display can be quite uncomfortable, particularly to dogs. In fact, the noise can actually hurt their ears. Leave pets at home if you are going to the fireworks show. Leave the lighting of all fireworks to the trained operator when you attend a public display. Sparklers, fountains and other items that many states allow for use by individuals are not appropriate to use when a large crowd is present. Leave your own fireworks at home - the display will provide plenty of excitement.

FOR YOUR SAFETY, THE FOURTH OF JULY COMMITTEE AND BROCKWAYBOROUGH REQUEST THAT NO ONE SIT ON THE DIKE, TRESTLE OR IN THE

IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE FIREWORKS LAUNCH. ANYONE IN THERESTRICTED AREAS WILL BE ESCORTED OFF THE PREMISES.

In 2012, he took time away from writing, recording and producing hisown original music to pursue his passion for performance. Blending a wide range of popularsongs with his own style of live performance, Ezra discovered with the right group of musicianshe could bring a concert experience to every audience.
