SIMPLE SIGNAL INJECTORSThe signal - injection method of

troubleshooting is rapid and simple. It may be applied to receivers andsound systems with equal facility. While somewhat similar to signaltracing, it has an important point ofdifference: In signal injection, the testsignal is introduced at various pointsinto the system under test, starting atthe output and working back pro-gressively to the input. The stationaryoutput device (loudspeaker or outputmeter) indicates transmission or lossof the signal, and thus alerts the oper-ator to the position of dead stages.A defective stage thus can be isolatedquickly and static tests then under-taken to find the defective componentsresponsible for the trouble.

A signal source usually is the onlyaccessory required for signal -injectiontroubleshooting. Audio and r. f. oscil-lators often are used. This raises thenatural question why build a specialinjector when oscillators are standardequipment? The answer is that oscil-lators and signal generators often arenot conveniently transportable to out-side jobs. Since signal injection gener-ally requires only a single spot fre-quency, accurate variable - frequencyoscillators may be left in the labo-ratory or shop. Simple signal injectorscan be made small enough to becarried in the pocket, and when tran-sistorized, may even be constructedcompletely in a probe.

Signal injectors have taken manyingenious forms. Some have beendesigned for special purposes and haveonly limited application in generalservicing. This article describes sev-eral simple injector circuits which canbe made the basis of inexpensive in-struments that the service techniciancan build.

Neither of the circuits is critical. They have been made as foolproof aspossible and have been thoroughlytested in the author's laboratory. Be-cause they are not critical, the readeris free to satisfy his own preferencesregarding layout and packaging.

Audio InjectorsFigures 1, 2, and 3 show injector

circuits for use in checking audioamplifiers and the audio channels ofreceivers and transmitters.Low -Voltage Battery -Tube Type. Fig-ure 1 (A) is a tickler -feedback -typeoscillator arranged for economical low -voltage battery operation. The Bbattery is a 41/2 -volt unit and canbe one of the small, flat-type unitsmarketed as C batteries. This oscil-lator lends itself readily to small -sized construction.

The feedback transformer can beany available interstage unit havinga turns ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. The low -impedance winding is connected tothe plate of the 1LE3 tube, and thehigh -impedance winding to the grid. The oscillation frequency is determinedby the capacitance of C and the in-ductance of the grid winding of thetransformer. Various values of Cmay be tried experimentally to obtaina satisfactory tone frequency. Thelower the capacitance, the higher willbe the frequency.

The transformer windings must bephased properly for positive feedback. If oscillation is not obtained when theON -OFF switch is closed, reverse theleads of the plate winding.

Only the filament battery needs tobe switched, since no current is drawnfrom the B battery when die filamentis cold.

The output attenuator is a 2000ohm wirewound potentiometer. A0.01-ufd. mica capacitor in series withthe upper output terminal isolates thetest circuit from the 1LE3 plate volt-age, and also prevents short-circuit ofthe test circuit by the output poten-tiometer.AC -Operated Tube Type. Figure 1

The phase -shift feedback networkhas three cascaded sections (CIRI,CGR2, and CaRa). Each section provides60 degrees of phase shift. The valuesof capacitances and resistances in thisnetwork have been chosen for a fre-quency of 1000 cycles. Other fre-quencies may be obtained by changingthe values, taking care to keep thethree resistances equal and the threecapacitances equal. A practical dis-cussion of phase -shift networks and

calculations of their R and C valuesappears in "Practical R -C Circuits" inthe November 1951 issue of the C -D.CAPACITOR.

The OUTPUT control operates byvarying the signal voltage at the gridof the output amplifier. The outputcircuit is high impedance and accord-ingly operates most efficiently intohigh -impedance devices. Ample output -signal voltage is present, however, sothat good injection -signal amplitude

is obtained even under the unfavorablemismatch conditions of operating intoa low impedance.

A 200- to 300 -volt d. c. supply isspecified, although the circuit willoperate well at 100 volts on the platesof the 12AT7. This must be a trans-former -type supply, not the line -oper-ated (AC -DC) variety. The powersection may be built on the samechassis as the injection unit. A small -sized power transformer and miniaturecircuit components may be used forcompact, lightweight construction. Thepower supply is entirely conventional, and the reader can use any suitablecomponents he has available..

Midget Transistorized Type. Transis-torized injection circuits provide bothsmall size and economical single -battery operation. This insures theacme of portability and complete iso-lation from the power line. Presenttransistors are entirely practical inthis application and their expectedlong life more than offsets present cost.

former (U. T. C. Type S7) havingthree windings. The third windingconveniently is available for inductiveoutput coupling.

No warmup time is required withthe transistor oscillator. Operationstarts with the closing of the ON -OFF switch. Transformer windingsP -B and M -M must be phased cor-rectly for positive feedback or oscil-lation will not be obtained. If thecircuit does not oscillate when theswitch is closed, reverse the connec-tions to the P -B winding. The oscil-lation frequency is determined by thevalues of capacitance Ca and the in-ductance of the M -M winding of thetransformer. The frequency will de-crease as C: is increased. No value isspecified for Cx, since we do not knowwhat tolerance will be encounteredin inductance of the transformerwinding. The reader can experimentwith various capacitances until adesirable tone frequency is obtained.

The value of the base resistance, R.,varies with individual transistors andits correct final value must be de-termined by experiment with the par-ticular transistor used It should bein the vicinity of 100,000 ohms butcan be higher or lower. Its value iscorrect when the d. c. collector currentis between 1/10 and 1/2 milliampere.

The sole voltage supply is the 3 -

volt battery, which for compactnessand portability can be two penlightcells connected in series. It is inter-esting to note that the circuits inFigures 2(A) and 2(B) will oscil-late, but with reduced output, withd. c. supply voltages as low as a fewmillivolts.

Adjustable output at high impedanceis obtained from the 500,000 -ohmOUTPUT control. The 0.01-ufd.coupling capacitor provides d. c. iso-lation for protection of both the in-jector and the circuit under test.Subminiature Transistorized Type. InFigure 2(B), the transistor oscillatorcircuit is similar to the one shown inFigure 2(A), except that a submini-ature hearing aid transformer (U. T.C. Type SS03) is used. This lattercomponent and the 11/2 -volt source

(a single penlight cell) permit drasticreduction of instrument size. Becausethe SSO3 transformer has only twowindings, audio output is taken ca-pacitively from the collector circuitof the CK722 transistor.

D. C. isolation in the output circuitis provided by the 0.01-ufd. couplingcapacitor. If the reader desires, a100 - ohm subminiature wirewoundpotentiometer can be used in placeof the fixed resistor shown, for adjust-able output. The ends of the poten-tiometer winding would be connectedas shown for the 100 -ohm resistor, andthe slider would be connected to the0.01-ufd. output capacitor.

The circuit oscillates readily whenthe ON -OFF switch is closed, nowarmup time being required, providedthe transformer windings are poledcorrectly for positive feedback. Ifoscillation is not obtained immediatelywhen the switch is closed, reverse theleads to the high -impedance (collector)winding of the transformer.

By using small -sized circuit com-ponents, the audio injector shown inFigure 2(B) can be built completelyinto a test -probe handle. It also maybe built into a flashlight case, usingthe regular flashlight switch as theON -OFF.

An important virtue of the transis-tor is its low d. c. drain. This meansthat little if any grief will attendforgetfulness in turning the instru-ment off, provided the inadvertent ontime is not too long. In battery -operated tube circuits, on the contrary, such forgetfulness is reflected quicklyin A and B battery expense.Extractor -Type Audio Injectors. Someservice technicians, especially thosewho do no outside work, favor useof a regular signal generator for signalinjection. Many shops do not havean audio oscillator, but all havesome form of r. f. generator. Whenthe audio voltage from the internalmodulator is available at outputterminals, the r. f. generator canserve as an audio injector as well.Often, however, this signal voltageis not available and it is not advisable

Figure 3 shows two extractor -typecircuits which will deliver an audiosignal from the amplitude -modulatedr. f. output of the signal generator. They are simple diode detectors ordemodulators. The extractor in con-junction with the modulated signalgenerator provides a suitable audioinjection signal in a simple and in-expensive manner.

Neither circuit can be consideredbetter than the other. They simplyuse different components and inputarrangements. The circuit in Figure 3(A) is a resistance -capacitance -coupledversion, while the one in Figure 3(B)is transformer coupled. They operateequally well and choice undoubtedlywill be dictated by which componentsare available to the builder.

In Figure 3(A), a shunt diode de-modulator circuit is employed. Thisarrangement does not require a d. c.return path for the germanium diodethrough the signal generator. The25 -millihenry r. f. choke and the0.0001-ufd. mica capacitor form aradio -frequency filter. The audio out-put is delivered at high impedance andis proportional to the modulated r. f.input amplitude. The output audioamplitude may be varied by adjust-ment of the signal generator outputattenuator.

In Figure 3(B), 'a series diode de-modulator circuit is employed. Oper-ation of this circuit assumes that thesignal generator provides a conductivepath between the two extractor inputterminals. This path will be providedthrough the attenuator resistors inthe signal generator unless there isa blocking capacitor in the output. If the latter is true, a small resistor(100 ohms of so) must be connectedbetween the input terminals of theextractor.

The detected audio component istransmitted through transformer T.This latter component may be anysmall audio transformer of the plate -to -line type. The low -impedance("line") winding is the one connected

to the 1N34 diode. The 0.001-ufd.capacitor serves as an r. f. bypass.

Some precautions should be observedin the use of the extractor -type injectorshown in Figure 3(B), in order toprevent hum pickup by the trans-former. If the transformer is not awell -shielded type, care must be takento keep it clear of magnetic fields, particularly those arising from thepower line or from line -operatedcomponents.

R. F. InjectorsLike audio injectors, the radio -

frequency signal injector should oper-ate at a fixed frequency. A reasonablechoice for general receiver servicingis the 455-kc. intermediate frequency. This will provide a signal which, onfundamental, will check the i. f. chan-nel of the average receiver, and willfurnish harmonics for the front endsof both broadcast and short-wavereceivers. The r. f. signal injectormust be amplitude -modulated, in orderthat the receiver loudspeaker may beused as an output indicator.Crystal Type. Figure 4(A) shows thecircuit of a modulated 455-kc. crystaloscillator. The i. f. crystal is con-nected between the plate and gridof a 6C4 triode in an untuned, Pierceoscillator circuit. Adjustment of the100-uufd. air trimmer capacitor acrossthe 50,000 -ohm grid resistor sets theoscillator for quick operation eachtime the ON -OFF switch is closed.

An ingenious scheme is employedfor amplitude modulating the oscil-lator with a minimum 'of components. An 0C3 regulator tube with a 0.1-ufd. shunting capacitor and 1500 -to -3500 -ohm variable series resistor forma relaxation audio oscillator circuitwhich modulates the d. c. plate inputof the 6C4 r. f. oscillator. The audiofrequency is varied by means of the2000 -ohm rheostat which may be setpermanently at any desired tone withinits range. The 1500 -ohm resistor inseries with the rheostat limits the0C3 current to a safe value when therheostat is at its zero -resistance setting.

Since it requires no specialdesign or treatment, the power supplyis not shown in either of the schema-tics, Figure 4(A) or Figure 4(B).

available so that satisfactory amplitudecan be obtained even when injectinga signal into a low impedance.Self -Excited Type. The r. f. injectorcircuit in Figure 4(B) employs a self-excited 455-kc. oscillator instead of acrystal type. A 6AU6 is used in anelectron -coupled circuit. Amplitudemodulation is supplied by a 6C4Hartley audio oscillator transformer -coupled to the suppressor of the 6AU6.

Transformer T may be any con-venient unit of the type intended tocouple pushpull plates to a low -impedance (200 or 500 ohm) line. The audio frequency is determined bythe values of capacitance Cr and theinductance of the entire center -tappedprimary winding. The larger the ca-pacitance, the lower the frequency. With an available transformer, thereader may experiment with a numberof capacitances in order to obtain thedesired tone frequency. If the audioamplitude is so strong as to block ther. f. oscillator, the 4700 -ohm 6C4 plateresistor may be increased with a giventransformer.

The radio frequency is determinedby the parallel resonant circuit formedby the 21/2 -millihenry r. f. choke andthe setting of the 75-uufd. air trimmercapacitor. plying 100 to 200 volts at 50 ma.There is nothing critical about itsdesign, therefore no particular layoutis shown here. The power supplycomponents can be mounted on thesame chassis as the injector.Transistorized Multivibrator Figure5(A) gives the circuit of a simpletransistorized multivibrator which canbe used as an r. f. signal injector. When operated between 5 and 10 kc.,a multivibrator gives harmonics soclosely spaced as to produce somewhatof a broad interfering signal from thelow end of the standard broadcastband up into the short-wave spectrum.Such a signal can be used for quicklytesting a set, without tuning. If themultivibrator frequency is low enough, the i. f. and audio channels also maybe checked with its output.

A CK716 point -contact transistor isemployed. A junction transistor willnot operate in this circuit. A single30 -volt battery is used and can be thesmall -sized type designed for hearingaids. Output is taken across the 500 -ohm base resistor.

Oscillation results from positivefeedback voltage developed across thebase resistor, since there is no phasereversal in the grounded -base transis-tor circuit. The frequency is determinedlargely by the value of capacitance CSand the setting of the 1000 -ohmemitter rheostat. , Since the internalemitter - to - base resistance of thetransistor shunts the R -C circuit andvaries with transistors, a definite speci-fication of C. is difficult. With a0.002-ufd. mica capacitor at C:, adjust-ment of the 1000 -ohm rheostat, R:,should allow an individual transistorto oscillate at about 10 kc. Reductionof C. will increase the frequency.C. should be a good -grade micacomponent.Transistorized Crystal -Type. The cir-cuit of the modulated i. f. crystaloscillator in Figure 5(B) may beregarded as a transistorized versionof the tube -type 455-kc. unit (Figure4A). This circuit is intended for usewith point -contact transistors (CK716or equivalent) and will not work withjunction transistors.

The i. f. crystal is connected be-tween collector and emitter of theleft transistor in a manner analogousto the vacuum -tube Pierce oscillator.Emitter and collector voltages for thistransistor are derived from a voltagedivider comprising two 10,000 -ohmresistors in series. A single 45 -voltbattery is the d. c. source.

The right transistor is a base -tunedaudio oscillator which supplies thea. f. modulation to the crystal oscil-lator. Audio energy is coupled intothe r. f. stage through the miniaturetransformer (U. T. C. Type SO2).The audio frequency is determined bythe inductance of the high -impedancewinding of this transformer and anycapacitance in parallel with it. Thedistributed capacitance of this windingplus circuit capacitances produce afrequency of about 5000 cycles. Thisfrequency may be lowered by meansof an external capacitor connectedfrom base to ground at the modulatortransistor, to satisfy individual pre-ferences.

Strength of the audio modulationamplitude is adjusted by means ofthe rheostat Rm. Audio waveformis affected somewhat also by thisadjustment. R. F. amplitude, andreadiness of the oscillator to startwhen the d. c. is applied, is controlledby adjustment of the rheostat R0.

The injector operates most efficient-ly into high impedances. Ample signalamplitude is provided. In many in-stances, direct physical connection isnot required, sufficient signal beinginjected into the circuit under test bypointing the "high" output test prodclosely to the test point in the circuit.

Electromechanical InjectorA small "watchcase" high -frequency

buzzer makes an extremely simplegeneral-purpose signal injector. Elec-tromechanical in operation, it requiresneither tubes nor transistors. It setsup a broad interfering signal whichis effective i:n the injection testingof audio and r. f. circuits. Its effectscan be noted even at television front-end frequencies.

Figure 6.

Most small buzzers operate withbattery potentials between 3 and 6volts. On direct connection, theoutput -signal amplitude is rather high, and the output control shown inFigure 6 is necessary.

The output is d. c. - isolated by the0.005-ufd. coupling capacitor. The0.01-ufd. capacitor prevents short-circuit of the buzzer contacts by theOUTPUT CONTROL potentiometer.

A disadvantage of the buzzer as asignal injector is its acoustic noisiness. But there is some possibility of en-closing the device in a soundproofingjacket of some kind, such as heavysponge rubber or tlick felt.

reverse current generates steady r. f.noise which is effective up to several

hundred megacycles. Easilyobtaineddiodes, such as the 1N21 and 1N21B,can be used for this purpose butgermanium diodes are unsatisfactory. This noise signal, being broad andrequiring no tuning either of thereceiver or noise generator, is veryconvenient for injection testing ofreceivers.

Figure 7 gives the circuit of asimple silicon -diode noise generatorwhich can be built as a small probe. The 50,000 -ohm rheostat is the noise

level control, maximum noise outputcorresponding to minimum -resistancesetting of this control.

The noise probe feeds into theantenna input terminals of the receiverunder test. When the receiver doesnot provide a d. c. return path forthe diode (as might be the case whenan input blocking capacitor is present),a resistance RL equal to the receiverinput impedance must be temporarilyconnected across the probe outputterminals as shown.
