Here are a few of pearly word’s of wisdom from the people’s champ…give us your take on competing alongside ten times aSP world Champion Kelly Slater? ‘I like having Kelly on tour. He’s the greatest surfer in our sport, and the longer he sticks around the better. I’d much rather we have him on tour than not. I’d hate to ever win a world title and not have him there competing for it.’

what was it like being part of the 2010 aSP world title race?Just to be in a race with Kelly was an achievement. It was pretty intense. I tried not to let it consume me; I just wanted to have fun

because that’s when I perform my best. It was crazy though, everyone's in your face all the time and everyone wants an interview. But it comes with the job, I’ve learned to deal with it and I actually kind of like it.

How did it feel to finish world no. 2? It was an honor to be in the title race with Kelly. I learned so much and I’m proud of that result.

the biggest win of your career came at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, one of your favourite spots on tour. what did that win mean to you? That was the best day of my life! To do it in front of my friends and family was amazing. It was pretty cool having all the vuvuzelas going right after the (World Cup) soccer that definitely inspired me and spurred me on!

you’d also just come straight off a win at the Mr Price Pro Ballito, how significant was that one?I hadn’t won an event in front of my home crowd since I was fifteen, so it was wild! Over the years I came close to winning the title and then last year I managed to win. It was such a brilliant feeling with the home crowd and my family there to cheer me on. It was definitely a massive honour to be up on that podium.

what are some of your earliest memories of the Mr Price Pro? I have so many fond memories of the Mr Price Pro, from coming down with my Dad to watch it as a grom, to sitting in the competitor’s area alongside my surfing heroes, to competing in great waves at my home break. It’s always going to be a special event for me that I look forward to competing in each year.

why is this year’s Mr Price Pro Ballito significant for you? Winning a world title will always remain my main focus on the ASP World Tour, however, one always wants to revert back to their roots and that’s why the Mr Price Pro Ballito is so special to me. The Mr Price Pro was my first ever WQS event, at the age of 12, and my mom even has a pic of me standing proudly next to the pier with my contest vest on. I’m hoping

to be back on the podium again this year but it's going to be much harder now that the event has been granted PRIME status.

tells us about your 2011 offseason preparationI had a great time this off-season hanging with friends and surfing up and down the coast in South Africa. I spent a lot of time in Cape Town training really hard, doing core stuff, sprinting and jogging up mountains! I managed to lose 8kgs! I was eating super healthy and its made a huge difference, I feel strong in the water again.

whats your 2011 game Plan? I'm stoked to get off to a strong start for the year, but know there's a lot of work to be done. I feel like I’ve started the year off well. I’m fitter than I’ve ever been and I feel strong in the water. I’ve had two thirds so far and I’m just looking to build momentum from here.

you finished third at the Quiksilver Pro, that’s a pretty good start to the year. There were more than a few times the heats could have slipped away, but I kept grinding and put together a couple solid scores to take the round. Taj had an amazing run and I'm looking forward to battling it out with him later in the season.

you bring your family on tour quite often, how important is it to you having them around? It goes without saying my family is the most important thing to me. Both parents have supported me 110%. My dad has been travelling with me right from the start and has had a major influence on so much of where I am today. My Mum and Casey (Sister) have also been amazingly supportive. I love bringing them on tour when I can.

what do you believe is the key to success on the tour? My first two years I put a lot of pressure on myself, a bit too much pressure and it showed in my results. I have since learned to relax, I think its because I’ve matured and I think about things differently now. Also I have learnt to feel comfortable

in different conditions and at different spots on tour. I think that’s so important, feeling comfortable with whatever the ocean throws at you because that’s the nature of our sport.

on living in California...I’ve been based out of California for the last three years, living with O’Neill team manager Garth Tarlow. It was a good base because its easy to fly out of there, and with my sponsors being based out of LA made me more accessible to them.

On South africa...I love South Africa, it will always be home. We have some of the best waves in the world and I love spending time surfing and hanging out with my friends up and down the coast. I’m the only surfer on tour who travels on a South African passport – it doesn’t get more South African than that!

Born into a fervent surfing family it was no surprise that a young Julian found himself on the podium more often than not, securing multiple pro junior and Australian titles in both long and short board divisions. In 2008 he became the youngest ever recipient of Surfer Magazine’s Surfer Poll award for “Best Performance of the Year” for his part in Quiksilver’s Young Guns III and in 2010 released his own signature film titled “Scratching the Surface”.

Now a fully-fledged elite ASP World Title Tour campaigner, Julian’s 2011 World Title campaign follows a momentous 2010 season. Kicking off his campaign halfway through the season at the Sri Lanka Airlines Pro, Julian obliterated the competition to win the event, setting a precedent for his 2010 ASP Star Tour campaign. Placing third in Canada and landing himself two finals berths in

Hawaii, Julian was awarded the Vans Triple Crown Rookie of the Year title, capping off the season with enough points to qualify for the prestigious Dream Tour in record time, a feat never before seen in elite tour competition.

Focusing all his efforts on this year’s World Title, Julian will undoubtedly be a threat to local favourite Jordy Smith’s Mr Price Pro Title defence in Ballito this year and will be the surfer to watch at this year’s event.

the Mr Price Pro Ballito will be a first for you this year, what are you looking forward to most about surfing on the KZn north Coast?It’s always exciting to be competing at a new location, I’ve heard the waves can get really good with solid barrels in Ballito so I’m hoping the surf turns on for the event.

Prodigious surfing talent Julian Wilson from Australia heads to Ballito for the first time in the wake of a record-breaking five-year sponsorship deal with the world’s biggest apparel brand, Nike. The deal, inked earlier this year, is rumoured to have made the 22-year-old surfing’s first million-dollar-a-year-man.

How important will this year’s event be, especially with J Bay starting four days later?Well I think it’s going to be very important. The fact that it’s a Prime is reason enough for it to be crucial and then considering J-Bay is straight after adds extra importance; you always want to go into an event with momentum.

Coming up against any surfer in their hometown is going to be tough and Jordy has had back-to-back wins in Ballito and Jbay. Do you think Jordy will be able to successfully defend both titles this year?Has he? That’s a great effort. You would have to say he’s the favourite for these two events again for sure.

your world tour qualification was one of the fastest in history – how does it feel to be on the world tour already and did you expect it to happen so fast?It feels amazing to be on tour, I have wanted it for a long time. Going into the start of 2010 I had high expectations of qualifying but then I had a few hurdles along the way and lowered those expectations so it was a nice surprise to end the year inside the top 32!

there are hundreds of surfers who have been digging the Star tour trenches for a few year’s now, what does it take to step up to title tour level?For those slogging it out on the QS I would just say let it all out! Treat every heat like it really means something and surf the best you possibly can.

what would you say is the biggest difference between being on the Star tour and the title tour?I haven’t been there very long but obviously the calibre of surfing is above and beyond that on the Star Tour. Also, you don’t get to make mistakes and get away with it on the Title Tour, you have to be on point at all times.

after the Mr Price Pro, do you plan on doing any more Prime Events throughout the 2011 season?Yes definitely, I’m looking forward to a few in the US and in Europe.

So tell us about the move from Quiksilver to nike?Well with where I am in my career, it seemed like the right time to make a transition and an excellent opportunity! Nike has been pushing the direction of the sport of late and I’m really eager to be part of that movement.

you’ve done the feature movie thing a couple of times with young guns 3 and then your own production Scratching the Surface. are there any more films on the horizon or is the title race more your focus this year?Nothing that is going to bear my name but I’ll have a few waves in Lost Atlas coming out this year.

what’s your goal for 2011?Have fun, be comfortable on the Title Tour for the whole year and be in contention at one or two locations

travelling is obviously a big part of your life, what do you do outside of surfing on the road to keep you sane?I go through phases of different things like skating and playing tennis but always try and find a golf course to get out on!

you’ve got a blog, vimeo channel and your fans can follow your movements on twitter, has social networking been a game changer for the modern pro surfer?Well the modern surfer is the first to see all these things so I guess you would say it’s been a game changer. You don’t have to be blasting your news out to the world every minute in order to be successful but I enjoy keeping people up to date with what I’m doing and if they’re interested, they watch.

spoken figure at the helm, but that’s what it got in Tomson. Years ahead of his contemporaries, he stood alone with articulate grace and redefined tube riding and professionalism in the process. Tomson was born in Durban where he picked up his first surfboard at age 10. He was the son of a successful businessman whose promising swimming career had been cut short by a vicious shark attack. By the time the ‘60s were out, Tomson had won the South African Boys’ title, attended his Bar Mitzvah and had his first experience in Hawaiian surf.

In 1973, Tomson performed his civic duty by serving 18 months in the national army and afterward attended university in Durban in pursuit of a business degree. He became South Africa’s most successful surfer, winning the country’s largest event, the Gunston 500, six times in succession (1973-78). One year short of finishing his degree, he joined the International Professional Surfers tour’s maiden voyage expecting to return to classes soon.

FORMER WORLD SURFING CHAMPION SHAUN TOMSON TO STAR AT THIS YEAR’S MR PRICE PRO BALLITOSouth African surfing hero Shaun Tomson returns to Ballito this year where he will play a star role in the world’s longest running professional surfing event, the Mr Price Pro Ballito.

Formerly known as the Gunston 500, Tomson held a stranglehold on the trophy from 1973-1978 with six consecutive wins, including one in his world title year of 1977.

This year the Mr Price Pro will roll out the red carpet for Tomson who will play an integral role in this year’s competition - lending his intimate knowledge of professional surfing to the commentary panel and present the winner’s trophy to the 2011 Mr Price Pro champion.

SHaun toMSon Bio In the mid ‘70s, surfing was a counter culture pursuit- long hair was everywhere, contests represented conformity and spiritual quests for mystical waves were the road to nirvana. The last thing the sport wanted was a professional, well-

As a competitor, Tomson’s consistency and longevity marked one of the most prolific careers in professional surfing. A perennial in the Top 16, from the tour’s inception in 1976 until 1989, he earned the 1977 world title and came inches from regaining it from Tom Carroll in 1985. His popularity was immense, garnering him top honors at the 1978 Surfer Poll and successful business ventures with Instinct apparel, surf shops and Shaun Tomson Surfboards. Wherever he traveled, surfers envied his abilities, and women swooned over his model good looks. In 1982, Tomson relocated to Santa Barbara as a more centralized home base. He married his wife Carla in 1987, and the couple had one

son, Mathew. After retiring from the world tour in 1990, Tomson returned to South Africa to complete his bachelor’s degree in business, in which he finished at the top of his class. “It was tough,” he says, “I was older than some of the lecturers.”

With degree in hand, the Tomsons returned to California to pursue further business interests. They began Solitude Clothing in 1998, with offices only one-half mile from the world-class surf break of Rincon.

Above all, it was Tomson’s professionalism that granted surfing a much-needed boost in respect. And in the process, he’s been a key figure in helping competitive surfing evolve from backyard

events for pocket change to grand productions with millions of dollars in prize money.

He was listed as one of the 25 most influential surfers of the century (Surfer 1999)and one of the 16 greatest surfers of all time (Surfing, 2004). Tomson is currently chairman of theSurfrider Foundation’s Advisory Board and received the Environmentalist of the Year Award (SIMA 2003). He is the recent author of the best selling surfing and inspirational book “Surfer’s Code – 12 Simple lessons for riding through life”.

The stylish natural-footer flew the flag for South Africa on the international stage for a record 14 years (nine on the World Title Tour and five on the Star Tour), the highlight of which was his runner-up finish to former ASP World Champion Australian Mick Fanning during the Quiksilver Pro France in 2007.

Emslie retired from international competition at the end of 2009 setting his sights on the domestic circuit where he burst out of the start gates winning four out of five events and the 2010 Surfing South Africa Open Mens’ title.

However all the titles in South Africa pale in comparison to the one event that haseluded him each year,his sponsor’s own Mr Price Pro Ballito.

Upgraded to a Prime in 2011, boasting more prize money and greater prestige than ever before, Emslie is determined to make this year’s Mr Price Pro Ballito his. Here’s what Emslie had to say about his early exit last year and exactly what this event means to him.

looking back on the 2010 Mr Price Pro Ballito must be bittersweet for you. you lost in a pretty dramatic fashion - scoring

one of the best barrel rides of the event but just didn’t get the score you needed?The waves were pumping for the event and on that particular day there were perfect tubes. I was so disappointed I didn’t get the score, as all I wanted to do was get some more good waves in the contest and nail a good result.

Being a professional athlete is obviously about learning to deal with the losses as much as it is about enjoying the victories. How does one bounce back after defeat?Well I won the next event, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic so it’s important to not be negative, learn from your mistakes and take a positive step forward.

Having come close to wining in previous years do you feel like it’s your turn this year. The way I approach events now is with a care free attitude and I just try have fun, that’s what its all about. So for me to compete and have fun is great. I am focused to win it and after all winning is fun!

you’ve retired from elite international competition but are lucky enough to be able to compete in one of the biggest surfing events in the world in your own country.what does it mean to you to be able to compete in a Prime event in South africa? I can’t wait! To get the chance to

compete against the top surfers in the world is always special. I am not sure if I am dreaming it but I feel I am surfing better and more progressive than ever now that I am retired. I treasure every surf session I have and appreciate everything surfing has given me so where ever it takes me from here is an added bonus!

Do you feel like there is a gap in the level between the touring pro’s and the non- touring pros or do you believe staying home and being able to train and focus gives you an advantage? I think its different, it is easy to be amazing at your home beach where the touring pro's have to be amazing everywhere to stay on tour. That’s why wildcards are always so difficult, they surf their home breaks and know them like the back of their hand but they may not be that good on tour.

is there a specific strategy/ pre heat ritual that you have found works in your successes? Yes, I have a routine to success. Every top sportsman and businessmen uses one; it’s about finding the right routine for you!

why would a win at this event mean so much to you? It’s the oldest pro surfing event in the world and it is one event every South African wants to win!

When it comes to the wildcard deck you don’t get more experienced nor more dangerous than nine-times elite ASP Title tour qualifier Greg Emslie from East London.

How does it feel to be selected as a wildcard into one of the biggest surfing events in africa?It feels amazing! It's hard to actually explain the feeling, just really great! It’s like all of the hard work you've done has just lead to this one moment and you have to perform, so there is a bit of pressure to do well.

is there more or less pressure as a wildcard? I still have a couple years left to figure myself out so there isn't too much pressure to get the results but there is a huge amount of pressure to perform to my best!

what kind of training/ prep are you doing for the event? I have been working on explosive training, balance, inner-core and endurance. The explosive trailing is to make those fast reactions powerful and the balance explains itself. The inner-core helps for stability and strength and the endurance training is to last long and not give let the tiredness take over.

what’s your go-to contest maneuver (the one you can always rely on)? Top to bottom surfing is what always gets you through heat safely but these days its not about being safe, its more about explosiveness and flair (innovation)

what’s your secret weapon maneuver (high risk / high reward maneuver)? I must say, don't

really have a "secret weapon maneuver". I just try to be spontaneous and creative in my surfing, I personally think its more exciting to watch.

what’s the best contest advice you’ve been given and who was it from? Surf in the here and the now, don't think about the final or the prize money, just concentrate on the heat you’re in, I got that from a couple of people.

How does it feel to be selected as a wildcard into one of the biggest surfing events in africa? It feels great! I am stoked to be behind a brand (Mr Price) that is prepared to put so much backing into our sport. It is a massive opportunity to prove myself amongst the best.

will there be more or less pressure competing as a wildcard? I would say there is less pressure as there is generally less expectation on you. I see it as an "everything to gain, nothing to lose" situation.

Has your preparation changed now that you are a wildcard? Preparation is key, also maintaining a constant routine that doesn't fluctuate between contests provides rhythm, which is key to me in particular. So no, I will not change my preparation. I will, however, try to change my surfing to a more freesurfing approach as I have less pressure.

what kind of training/ prep are you doing for the event? I play football three times a week to keep up my cardio and explosive fitness as well as stretches before and after every surf and gym session.

what’s your strategy/ How will you be approaching heats? With a more positive attitude and disregard thinking of the end result.

Dream final at the Mr Price Pro who would you be up against? Jordy.

How do you rate the waves in Ballito and do they suit your surfing? I like Ballito. I guess it all depends on if I get the right waves in my heat but I would say that it favours regular footers.

who do you enjoy travelling with the most and why? The SA junior team as there is never a dull moment and a great atmosphere.

Saturday, July 9 brings in the likes of Pierre de Carmoy, Ard Matthews, Goodluck, Fire through the Window, Crash Car Burn and Flash Republic to the seaside and a party at an after concert party at ‘Crush’ in Ballito to party up a storm.

FarrylPurkiss who will be lending his bluesy, folk-tinged acoustic sound to the mix again this year had

this to say: “I’m from the North Coast originally, so having an opportunity to come home and play an amazing event like this is always such a pleasure. And, of course, the lineup is always a bonus. Some amazing music was experienced last year and I’m sure this year will only be bigger and better. The ‘surf vibe’ has played a huge role in the development of music and combining a surf event of this calibre with a beach concert can only deliver something incredible. It’s going to be a special evening.”

The Dirty Skirts will also return ‘home’ to Salt Rock.According to front man, Jeremy De Tolly: “Playinga show on the beach was a unique experience.Besides, half the Dirty Skirts are from KZN – andone is actually from Salt Rock! Last year, we enjoyeda day packed with surfing followed by some goodold rock ‘n roll. This year we will be dropping tracksfrom our brand new album Lost in the Fall, so expectlots of new tracks.”

The Mr Price Pro Ballito 2011 beach festival exists because of the ocean. The

beautiful setting, consistent quality of waves and clean water make Ballito ideal

for a high profile surf competition; and with this in mind it is logical that ocean

conservation is a top priority. The Mr Price Pro Ballito 2011 is pleased to be

working closely with Hanli Prinsloo of the I Am Water Ocean Conservation Trust

to vocalise the importance of our oceans and how best to look after them.

Hanli Prinsloo is probably most well known for her freediving reputation. Having started freediving when living and studying in Sweden 12 years ago; Hanli truly took to the sport and has subsequently earned the title of being the 11-times South African freediving record holder.

In fact last year she travelled to Egypt for the International Triple Depth competition where she placed third overall and broke a spate of South African records, including a mammoth 63m dive that took her 2 minutes and 20 seconds to complete. For most of us we imagine freediving to be holding our breath for extended periods of time under water, but in actuality it is a lot more complex than that. Freedivers compete in different disciplines which include use of monofins, dives with no fins using breast stroke and ‘Free Immersion’ which involves using a rope to pull oneself down to great depths and back up again. It requires a completely different

mindset of calm and focus, which begins to shed some light on Hanli’s character.

Originally a documentary filmmaker, Hanli’s

interest in social political conflicts led her to many different African countries. Living in Sweden for

seven years and travelling extensively, Hanli is an exceptionally worldly person whose enthusiasm and

approachability have inadvertently expanded her career from athleticism into public speaking. She is a well liked woman; and

can capture any audience with her tales from the deep! Passionate about the ocean to the nth degree, Hanli now teaches freediving to individuals from all walks of life. Being a surfer and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarder herself, it is natural that surfers relate well to Hanli. Big wave surfers are often faced with terrifying hold downs when they fall in the face of 20ft waves, and many of the world’s top Big Wave chargers have worked with Hanli

to practically manage the life threatening situations they often wind up in. Hanli runs freediving and ocean-mindedness courses throughout the year in Cape Town and along the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal through her school I am Water. But it isn’t just technical proficiency in large bodies of water that Hanli wants to teach to people, it is aiding them in understanding their personal connection with water and furthermore with the ocean as a whole. Freediving obviously means interacting with sea life, but it also means diving with Zambezi sharks, Black-tipped reef sharks, Tiger sharks and other ocean animals with a notoriously bad rap; and it is being able to demystify and take away the ‘monster’ image of these animals which is of massive importance to Hanli. This is where ocean conservation starts, and what has driven Hanli in her next major mission. Hanli’s love of ocean life comes through in all her work, and the establishment of the I Am Water Ocean Conservation Trust is the formalisation of this deep devotion and respect. Hanli’s aim is to foster a true understanding of the oceans and the life sustained within them, through human experience with the ocean. Reaching out across society to teach this understanding, marginalisingno-one, is how Hanli feels the oceans can be better conserved. Hanli has been nominated for the Cosmo Awesome Women of the Year Awards, Outthere Adventurer of the Year, Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans, Gsport’s Woman in Sport as well as a ‘strider’ in the Johnny Walker Celebrating Strides Awards. HANLI PRINSLOO AND MR PRICE PRO 2011:what was your initial reaction when asked if you would like to be the voice for ocean conservation at the Mr Price Pro? When Mr Price asked me if I would like to be a voice for ocean conservation at the Mr Price Pro in Ballito this year I was thrilled and answered with a resounding YES! The Mr Price Pro is a great meeting place for surfers, beach-goers, music lovers and South Africans from many walks of life.

you’re well known for being an exceptional water athlete, but can you tell us a bit about how you became involved in ocean conservation? I have been a competitive freediver for over ten years. I have developed from challenging my body to new depths as an avid deep-diver to a passionate conservationist, with an undying energy for seeing our oceans protected and appreciated. In 2010 a few ocean loving friends and I founded the I Am Water Ocean Conservation Trust. Through the trust we run projects aimed at conservation and human ocean experience - and a combination of the two. we know that you’re also quite the surfer! tell us about your relationship with surfing? The happiest times of my days are in or on the water. I started surfing when I moved back to SA in 2005 after seven long but meaningful years in Sweden, and have fallen in love with the ocean from a whole new perspective! I love surfing! Riding the waves, whooping for joy with each fast take off and the gliding surge...from being happiest under the waves, to having fun on them - I am at my most fulfilled in the ocean. How has surfing influenced your work path? When I started surfing I saw a clear connection between what I do and what surfers experience. So the last couple of years I have worked with many surfers around the country as well as South Africa’s top Big Wave Surfers, believing that the freediving training I’ve been doing the last ten years of my life for fun, would be applicable to these guys and girls…for survival! I have taught these amazing surfers a course I’ve developed called Surprise Apnea. I teach

them breathing, relaxing, mammalian dive response, what

happens in your body when you’re held down with NO air left in your lungs. Every day these surfers inspire me with their incredible courage, joy and love of life. But it’s gone a lot further than that hasn’t it? tell us about your vision for using surfing as a tool to bolster bigger environmental issues? My involvement in surfing has brought me to believe that surfers have a very important role to play in the conservation of our oceans. Surfers are passionate ocean users, and if you ask any surfer he or she will tell you that they just cannot live without surfing...which essentially means they can’t live without the ocean. We need our waves, our salt-fix; our time spent playing on the ocean’s blue ripples. But the ocean needs us even more than we need her. As vast and majestic as she seems, she is at the most vulnerable she has ever been. From overfishing to pollution to poaching and climate change, this huge heaving body of water is subject to debilitating blows year by year. If we are to enjoy our oceans for years to come, we need to make a stand.

what will you be up to at the Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach Festival? On Wednesday, July 6 evening I’ll be doing a presentation and motivational talk, with proceeds from ticket sales going towards the I am Water Ocean Conservation projects. I will also have a I am Water stand, where I’ll be available for chats, connecting, competition entries and general queries from 10am until 12am. At 2pm until 4pm I’ll be available for an ‘in-water challenge’ at the ‘I am Water Pool’! I’ll be doing a plus five minute breath-hold; we’re organising heads to head between surfers and I’ll be doing mental strength/breath-hold workshops. THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER WITH

How many years have you been

shooting the Mr Price Pro? The first Mr Price Pro I

photographed was in 2005 but then I was doing my own thing, standing

on the beach all day every day in the hope of making a photo worthy of publication. I

had three photos printed from that year, a vast contrast to the amount of photographs that I now have printed and distributed throughout the world in my capacity as official event photographer. 2006 was when I stepped into that role, the year Ricky Basnett won. I missed the event in 2009 due to other commitments, so of the past 6 years this will be my fifth year I have

the pleasure of officially shooting the event.

what memories stand out about the event? The siren starting the first

heat of the 2006 event was a goose-bump moment. I'd only been photographing surfing for two and a half years and there I was being paid to do what I love at the longest running pro surfing event on the South African calendar, an event I'd been watching for many years before and thinking what a dream it would be to be a surf photographer. Seeing Ricky win the event was obviously the highlight, his opening wave was a beautiful aerial that signalled his intention to be the first South African in 28 years to win the event. Then, last year Jordy Smith claimed the title in an all South African final. To see the smile and satisfaction on his face after claiming the title that had eluded his trophy cabinet was a good end to another amazing Mr Price Pro.

what image stands out for you from the event?This years poster image of Greg Emslie. It was a perfect morning and I couldn't put my water housing together fast enough. I remember that heat clearly, Greg got that barrel right towards

the end and I thought it was good enough for the score he needed but sadly it was not. It was certainly good enough for this year’s poster and tower though! So many memorable photos from that water session but Greg’s photo because it shows how good the North Coast with the water clarity and little dash of Ballito in the background made it a winner.

How does the event compare to the other international events you cover? The difference between the Mr Price Pro Ballito and other international events is that I get to stay at home and drive to work. On a quality of surfing level it is right up there. Surfers, local or international, all want to win so the surfing is always of the highest standard. Logistically it is a well organised event, this is not an event thrown together over two weeks, it all comes together after months of planning and those months culminate into an event of the highest calibre. The music concerts also mean the fun and excitement extends late into the night.

who do you reckon will be a standout this year? Being that a vast majority of the Top 32 surfers in the world will be competing I don't think it is possible to single out one specific surfer. Defending champions are always one to watch and this year it is our very own Jordy Smith. This year he will be up against a bigger flock of international competitors meaning a



win on home soil will be done with flair. We are also running very close to the ASP World Tour mid year cut off where a number of high ranking surfers will be fighting for requalification while others on the cusp of qualification will be going all out. Our local pros have things to prove and a nail in the coffin in local waters is that much sweeter. An ASP Prime event only brings out the best.

How much time do you spend shooting free surfing on the north Coast? How do you rate the waves here? Nowhere near as much as I should. The waves here are world class, read the charts correctly, gather a small cast of surfers and you will walk away with some mind-blowing imagery.

what equipment are you using this year?I've been using Canon gear from day one. For land I have the 500mm f4 lens with the EOS 1D MK3 camera. In the water I use Delmar Water Housings, they are the lightest and strongest things around. In it I put the MK3 with a 70-200mm f2.8. If I manage to wake up early enough and get some pre contest free surfing from the water I will use Canons 7D camera with a Tokina

10-17mm f4 fisheye lens. I have two different housings, as the cameras are different sizes.

what are the travelling photographers essentials besides actual camera gear? Firstly solid core muscles for that backpack that weighs a ton. Patience and a smile to get that upgrade and avoid excessive excess fees. Street smarts to jump the hurdles that pop up in getting from airport A to hotel B. A good sense of humor. A phone with international roaming as home is only a phone call away. Travel size can of deodorant and toothpaste and toothbrush. Lately I've been taking a notepad because travelling is a story, write the chapters. An iPod full of music helps with the journeys soundtrack. And a pocket full of change.

How many times have you made the tower image? This year will make it five. Two with Tammy-Lee Smith, the underwater image and two with Greg Emslie.

which as been your favourite? Last years underwater photo, general surfing photos date but classic photos never age. Each tower image

has had a story behind it, just ask Tammy for those behind her two.

what’s it like to see your images blown up to triple life size? I always think back 5 or so years ago when they said digital would never hold up being printed that big. Things have come a long way since then and I still smile like a giddy school kid when I see my work printed that big for everyone to see. Digital is great but nothing beats a physical product of your work.

what do you enjoy most about the job?The fact that is not a job per-say. Yes I have

obligations to meet and I get a pay cheque but I have no fixed hours and I don't sit in an office getting a numb bum. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life - Confucius.

and least? The dilemma of surfing or shooting. When I'm surfing and the waves are good I think I should be shooting. When I'm shooting and the waves are good all I want is to surf one of those good waves. And sand, I hate sand.
