Meet Garreth and Elaine Joiner...
Garreth Joiner returned
from the service, enrolled
at Baylor University and
joined a Christian student
group where he met his
beautiful, future bride
Elaine. They married in
their native state of Texas.
In 1946 a terrible earthquake killed many
people in South America. A missionary from
Colombia was passing through and was
grieved that many lives were lost without
having heard the message of salvation known
as Christ.
Garreth and Elaine had felt the call for missionary work and presented themselves to
be the first missionaries appointed by the Baptist Foreign Board to Ecuador.

Resident Spotlight…..Getting to Know You
We remain approximately three weeks ahead of schedule with construction. The Assisted
Living wing (The Forest) is substantially complete with only a few remaining items to be
punched. We are reviewing options for furnishing a model Assisted Living apartment to
show to potential new residents. The General Contractor expects to reach substantial comple-
tion and turn over the keys August 1st.
FF&E (furniture, fixtures, & equipment) installation is expected to be completed by August
15. While we hope to complete all required inspections and achieve all health/safety/
occupancy certifications by September 15, this is a very optimistic, best
case scenario. (We are at the mercy of numerous outside regulatory
agencies.)
Resident moves are expected to commence between September 15
(best case) and October 15 (probably more realistic case scenario).
Weekly new building transition meetings continue. We have com-
pleted the first round of meetings for room selection and preferences
with the current Independent Living & Assisted Living residents and
family members. Room assignments are near completion.

Some of us may get too busy, forget how blessed we are and as a result take so
much for granted. It has been estimated that ….
If you have food in your refrigerator or if you have clothes on your back, a roof
overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of all the people in the
world. You‟re in the top 25%.
If you have any money in the bank, you have some money in your wallet, and you have
spare change in a dish someplace you are among the top 8% of the world‟s wealthy.
You are richer than 92% of the people in the world. You are blessed.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the
agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are already ahead of five hundred mil-
lion people who have experienced those things.
If you can attend a worship service - a church - without the fear of harassment, arrest, tor-
ture or death you are more blessed than three billion people on this planet. Going to
church is illegal for three billion people somewhere in the world.
Think about the material things you have in your life that God has blessed you with. They give you comfort, enjoy-
ment, and enable you to serve others. Think about the relationships that He‟s given you. Relationships in the past,
relationships that you have right now and even into the future. Then think about God‟s love for you.
„God, You know me better than anyone else and You still love me better than anyone else. God, thank You for
Your love for me. God, thank You for all of these things. I am grateful for Your gracious love for us and how You
show it in such practical and real ways. In Jesus name. Amen.‟

Pastoral Care Director
They soon sailed for several days
from Louisiana to Ecuador. After
arriving, they bounced along on
cobblestone streets in a canvas
topped Jeep. An Ecuadorian pastor
and his wife joined them to begin
services. At that time there were no street lights
and the first neon sign was at the Baptist Christian
Center, where a few years later an elementary
school was established.
Garreth and Elaine were blessed with four
wonderful children; Judy, Larry, Donna and Kathy
who were all born in Quito, Ecuador. The children
attended private schools where they spoke both
Spanish and English.
They began living in Quito, the capital, which is high in the Andes
Mountains. They later lived in the hot, coastal city of Guayaquil.
When their children went to the U.S.A. for college, they moved to
the north-eastern jungle area and lived in a pre-fabricated house in
Lago Agrio, which means “Sour Lake”. Their mission work
included Sunday school, women‟s mission groups, teaching English
in the school they furnished and seminary training for members of
the community. Time was spent training others to start new
missions, churches and bible studies. They worked with their
Ecuadorian co-workers in each of these locations and are still
communicating with many by email. Some of the children they
taught are still leaders in that area.
The Joiners have
many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We were happy to hear the beautiful music
flow through our halls when some of the
children visited this spring. The staff and
residents at Crestview consider it a blessing to
have Elaine and Garreth Joiner as members of
our family. Please join us this month in
wishing a Happy Birthday to Elaine who will
turn 84 and to Garreth who will turn 87.

Summer Cleaning: Getting Ready for the Big Move
Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the new
building is getting closer to being finished. Spring has
flown by amidst all of the excitement, anticipation and
planning related to the big move. Even though I have
noticed that I seemed to have missed the spring clean-
ing tradition that allows us to freshen up our homes
and offices, it is never too late to do it this summer.
We are asking the residents at Crestivew to start their own “summer” cleaning by
enlisting the help of their family members. This way the task does not seem so
overwhelming and it can be something fun to do together to get ready for the
move.
One of the biggest parts of “summer” cleaning is getting rid of the clutter. I suggest using the “Four Con-
tainer Clutter Method”. Get four boxes or containers and label them.
Container #1: Trash - This should include any item that you do not need or want, but that is not donatable
or sellable.
Container #2: Give Away/Sell - Think about the
uses someone else might get out of the items vs.
the use it gets buried in your cabinets or closet.
Container #3: Storage - Put items in here that you
cannot part with but do not need on a regular basis
(i.e.: winter clothing). If possible, have your family
store this container at their house until after the
move.
Container #4: Pack for move – These are the items
that you know you will need on a regular basis.
Container #4 should be the last container(s) you
complete. These containers will be moved by
Crestview staff when it is time to move everyone,
so make sure you write your name on all of them.

5 A Day the Color Way
Fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. They contain
essential vitamins, minerals and fiber to protect against chronic diseases,
including cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers. To get a
healthy variety, start thinking COLOR. Each color supplies specific nutri-
ents beneficial to health. Fruits and vegetables are low in calories and can
also help with maintaining a healthy weight. Try to choose 5 different colors
of fruit or vegetable choices each day and include at least 2½ cups of fruits
and vegetables daily. Here are some helpful hints to do just that!!
Start with the first meal of the day. Mix it up: ½ grapefruit, an apple or a
handful of berries on your cereal are all good choices. Juice counts
too, but only if it is 100% fruit juice.
Get extra energy from fruit and vegetable snacks. Carbohydrates in
fruits and vegetables are great sources of energy. Combine these
with a serving of protein – such as a piece of cheese, cup of yogurt
or 1 tablespoon of peanut butter, and you get staying power too!
Double up on your fruit and vegetable servings. Serve yourself a 1-cup
portion of broccoli or tomatoes instead of the standard ½-cup serv-
ing.
Use fruits and vegetables as ingredients. Bake up a batch of zucchini
bread or use applesauce instead of oil in your baked goods. Cut up
veggies and toss them into your favorite chili recipe.
Try a new fruit or vegetable recipe each week.

A Little Child in a Candy Store
Every time I walk over to the new building to see
the changes that occur each week I feel like a little
child in a great big candy store! The changes are
remarkable. I see something new each time and just
get tickled – it puts a smile on my face! It seems
like it was yesterday that they were bull dozing the
grounds and laying the foundation – how time flies!
I walk into the new kitchen and see everything
brand new and shiny and my mind begins to see
new potentials to enhance your dining experience.
I look at the dining rooms and see how roomy and comfortable they appear and all the new conversa-
tions that will be held at each table. Just like a candy store there are so many different possibilities to
bring enjoyment into each one of our lives as we move into our new home! God is Great and may His
Blessings be upon each one of us bringing that new joy and excitement that a child experiences the first
time they walk into that giant candy store!

Go Western! was the theme for the May 25, 2011 Brazos Valley Senior Expo joined by
Crestview Home Health Services. Booths were to be decorated in a western theme and
not to be outdone, staff contributed authentic spears and an original Indian oil painting.
Added were original western garments, a saddle and hay. The only thing missing was
the horse but the center had to draw the line somewhere.
It is estimated more than 2,500 people attended. It was a great opportunity for friends to
meet and learn about health care and other items that directly influence the senior adult
community. Crestview Home Health Services offered literature and information of the
many ways it serves the Bryan/College Station Community. Services include skilled
nursing care, home health aides, medication assistance, physical, occupational and
speech therapy when needed.
In June, Crestview Home Health Ser-
vices was pleased to introduce Gail
Hebert as the new Director of Nursing.
She and her 2 children recently moved
here from Louisiana. Gail is a Nurs-
ing graduate of Lamar University
Beaumont and has many years of ex-
perience in home health. Staff and
clients are very excited to have her as
part of our team as we all look for-
ward to the continued growth of our
community.

The Newman Garden
The Newman Garden at Crestview was donated in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Newman.
Our residents take pride and responsibility in maintaining it year round. It is beautiful in
the spring and summer months with all of the bluebonnets, indian paintbrushes, and other
flowers. The residents also grow vegetables such as onions, potatoes, and tomatoes to
name a few. We appreciate everything the residents have done in making the Newman
Garden beautiful.
Gardening is a source of personal satisfaction and pride, providing pleasure and opportu-
nity for relief from daily stress. Gardening is an ideal preventative therapy to maintain
personal well being and age in place. It's a safe environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities
can come together, connected by the simple fact that we all rely on the earth to survive. We have been thinking
about adding another raised garden behind Unity due to the overwhelming success of the Newman garden. If you
have never gardened, now might be a good opportunity to acquire a new and rewarding hobby.
