n For years, dentistry has notonly been focusing to ensure thatthe oral cavity of patients func-tions correctly, but also to estab-lish a perfect ‘balance’ betweenfunctionality and appearance. Infact, an increasing number of pa-tients visit their dentist not onlyto solve their functional problemsbut to eliminate aesthetic discomfortcaused by ‘dissatisfaction with theirsmile’.

Many current tooth whiteningtechniques allow satisfactory aes-thetic results, however, the time spanthat is needed to apply those tech-niques can cause discomfort for thepatient, as well as teeth dehydration or hypersensitivity to temperature. Onaverage, patients have to keep their

mouth open at least 15 minutes fromthe moment on the whitening processbegins.

Due to special photosensitizers,BlancOne, a tooth whitening gel sup-plied by Italian manufacturer Inter -national Dental Supply, is said to activate in less than 20 seconds re -ducing the possibility for dehydrationand hypersensitivity. According to thePresident of the Italian Society of

Oral Hygiene Science Dr Anna MariaGenovesi, as the tooth remains per-fectly hydrated, the whitening effect isstabilizing without colour alterationswhich means that chromogenic-freediets following the treatment are nolonger required.

This product can also have bene-fits for prosthodontists who have tomeasure the chromatic value of teeththat has just been whitened in order

to reconstruct adjacent teeth. WithBlancOne it is no longer necessary towait until whitened teeth have rehy-drated and the prosthodontist can begin working as soon as the whiten-ing treatment has been completed, they say.

In addition to the reduction of chairtime, dentists are also able to use anylamp that delivers 800 mW/cm² (suchas the LED lamps commonly used in

the office for restoration work) foractivation of the formula. As it is photochromatic, the Blancone gelchanges from orange to whitewhen activated to show the opera-tor exactly when the whiteningprocess is completed.

Dental professionals and pa-tients will find a number of audiovi-sual presentations providing detailedinformation about the advantages ofthis innovative whitening treatmentat the Blancone website. The productwill also be on display at IDS 2011 inhall 11.3 at booth B072. 7

n With a comprehensive line ofNarrow-Body Implants, Dentatus

AB from Sweden aims to advances the field of implantology at IDS. Ac-

cording to the com-pany, they are ideal forpatients who have lim-ited interdental spaces, insufficient bone levelthat require otherwiselengthy bone augmen-tation procedures, or financial constraints.

The rec om -mend ed surgicaltechniques allow

minimally invasive flaplessplacement and immediate load-ing. This minimizes most post-operative challenges and dra-matically reduces the total timein treatment.

These implants can solve thetime and money problems for most patients who otherwise willnot proceed with the treatment, the company says. In addition to excellent patient satisfaction, clinical and histological studiesof the Dentatus Anew and AtlasImplant Systems have reportedexcellent bone adaptation andhigh survival levels—creatinggreater healthcare treatmentopportunities for dentistry.

Atlas Denture Comfort Im-plants were designed for the sta-bilisation, cushioning and passive

retention of partials and com-plete dentures. With the TUF-LINK silicone reline, dentures

are retained without housings,o-rings or adhesives.

Anew narrow body im-plants are designed to fit in cases

where there is limiting space, con-verging roots or narrow ridges. The system utilises the only screw-retained narrow body implant sys-tem for strong, definitive reten-tion. Patients receive a fixedrestoration at time of placementwhich is easily adapted to a finalcrown after the osseointegrationperiod.

Implants for both systemsare available in 1.8, 2.2 and 2.4 mm diameters with threadlengths of 7, 10 and 14 mm. The

systems are CE marked and FDAapproved for long-term use and forany length of time as decided by

the healthcare provider.

Dentatus arranges hands-on courses for the Atlas and Anew Implant Systemsin different countries duringthe year. More informationabout these courses and howto sign up are available atthe company’s website or at their booth in hall 10.1 at IDS. 7

n The new sinus retractor fromKohler, a German company, was de-signed asymmetrically, consequentlythere is the R-version for right and theL-version for left. It is also suitable forretraction in the anterior region, there-fore, only these two instruments arenecessary for the complete upper jaw.

During lateral sinus windowpreparation, this new instrument se-cures the mucoperiosteal flap by hold-ing it through “shark teeth”. Therefore, pressing the retractor firmly againstthe jaw bone is no longer necessary. This also benefits the lifting the sinusmembrane and bone augmentationwith or without simultanous implantplacement, the company says. In ad -dition, the shape of the instrument end prevents the instrument from sliding into the sinus window. Onlymoderate retraction force is requiredfrom the assistant due to an anatomi-cal shaped handle.

At IDS, Kohler will also showcasenewly designed cheek retractors, con-sisting of two sideand one front re-tractor. They canbe equally usedfor the upper andlower jaw. Simi-lar to the the com-

pany’s sinus contractors, a handle allows safe grip and ensures the as -

sistant needs onlymoderate retrac-tion force.

Kohler’s par-alleling guide isused for aligning2 or 4 interforam-inal implants inthe edentulousmandible to themedian plane. A

hole is drilled in the middle of themandible using a pilot drill, which is easily aligned to the median plane. The distance to the middle can be ac-curately transferred to the oppositeside by swiveling the fitted parallelingguide. 7

As an addition to Pentron Clini-cal’s award winning line of Build-ItCore Materials, the Build-It Light Curewas specifically designed for clini-cians that favor the on-command cureafforded by light cure only core ma -terials. According to the company, the light cure only formulation pro-duces outstanding physical propertiesand is compatible with 4th through 7th generation bonding agents ensuring

compatibility with almost everybonding agent.

The companywill also show-

case Bond-1 SF Sol-vent Free SE Adhe-

sive, a unique, solventfree, self-etch, light-

cure, one-coat,bonding agent, to be used fordirect composite bonding. With this product, the com-pany says to have removedthe solvent while preservingthe high bond strengths as-sociated with conventionalbonding agents. AdrienneCollins, the Pentron ClinicalTechnologies Product Managerstates: “We didn’t feel the immediateneed to assign a generation to this newbonding agent, as we feel this productis in a league of its own and makes thepractice of referring to bonding agentswith generations obsolete.”

Fusio Liquid Dentin, the first flow-able composite from Pentron Clincial tobond to both dentin and enamel with-out a bonding agent, is now indicatedfor restoring Class V carious lesions.Formulated with 4-MET technologyand a new proprietary BPA-free resin,Fusio Liquid Dentin etches, primes, bonds, and restores using only one prod-

uct, accord-ing to thecompany. By

effectively fusing together self-adhesive and restorativetechnology, clinicians will be able to re-store teeth faster than ever saving bothtime and money.

Mojo Veneer Cement,a light cure, aesthetic cementation system de-signed for use with porce-lain, ceramic and compos-ite veneer re storations, is the latest in adhesivetechnology from PentronClinical. It has no detectableshade shift and offers try-ingels that consistently match the polymerized cement, the company

says.

Virtually colourless,the eugenol-free, resin-

based TempSpan Transparent Tem-porary Cement

safely secures provi-sional crowns and bridges

without influencing the overlyingcolour. This dual-curing cement pro-vides the ultimate in flexibility en-abling the clinician to light cure for an instant set in addition to providing

the option of waiting5½ minutes for a chemical cure. Formulated with optimized adhesiveproperties, TempSpan TransparentTemporary Cement secures provision-als in place but can be easily removedwithout damaging the preparation orrestoration. n The minimally invasive cosmeticdentistry is a new dynamic movementin modern dentistry which has a pa-tient and defect oriented approachand, therefore, clearly challenges a development that is too technologydriven and quickly prone to over- treatment. In Europe particularly, it isunderstood as a concept that is com-mitted to the prevention and—if still

necessary—the early, strictlydefect oriented restoration ofcarries defects under maxi-mum preservation of healthytooth substance. On the otherhand, it also aims for thesubordination of treat-ments removing aes-thetic deficits un-der the guidingidea of theminimally in-

vasive methodology.

A consis -tent implemen-tation of theMiCD conceptis based oncomprehensive preventative meas-ures, a sufficiently sensitive carries(risk) diagnostic, special instruments

for hard tooth substance treatment, magnification aids and not least a suit-able range of adhesive restoration ma-terials.

Besides efficient pro-phylactic pastes for pro -fessional teeth cleaning,

SHOFU offers a com-plete line of productsadjusted to the MiCD

concept for the mini-mally invasive restorativefield. With the rotary dia-

can be opened to even the smallest lesions. With the low viscous and ex-tremely thin bonding layer forming

n Previously, dental cliniciansdealing withimplants had touse several sys-tems with dif-ferent connec-

tions to solve com-plex clinical cases. Therefore, manage-ment of protocols, staff and resourceswas extremely complex. Italian man -ufacturer GEASS has announced to revolutionise implant dentistry withthe introduction of their new advanced way implant sys-tem at IDS.

Accordingto the company, the system isbased on onesingle implantbody and sur -gical protocol, yetoffers three different connectionsnamed after famous Italian cities. While way Milano has an internal con-ical connection, hexagonal base andreduced prosthetic platform to ensurethe long-term well-being of the tissue, way Roma makes it possible to operatein one single surgical step due to atransmucous conical connection withan octagonal base. Additionally, wayVenezia offers an external connectionthat make it useful in cases where flex-ibility in the restorative managementis a must.

nOne hundred and twenty years oldbut young at heart—this is how the Austrian dental manufacturer W&His presenting itself at its anniversary. In 2007, the family-run company wasthe first worldwide to integrate ster-ilisable light-emitting diodes (LEDs)in rotating dental instruments.

Introduced last year, LED maximumtechnology (LED+) is featuring opti-mal colour temperature and constantlight quality, the highest lumen rat-ing as well as the ability for completesterilisation. It also comes with thehighest colour rendering index on the market (over 90) which the com-pany says creates a relaxing working

environment due to high-contrastnatural colour rendering.

The colour rendering index (CRI)is an important aspect of artificial illumination methods, since a higherCRI value contributes significantly to well-being through improved vi-sual perception. Perfect colour ren-dering occurs at an index of 100. Conventional LEDs only attain a CRIof between 60 and 80. Also, the redcomponent of these LEDs is too low—a considerable drawback for manymedical applications. A CRI of morethan 90 produces a high-contrast, natural rendering of red tones in themouth.

LED technology is avail-able in W&H’s new Synea turbines, Alegra contra-an-gle handpieces, and thecompany’s surgical straightand contra-angle hand-pieces.

As the longest-standingmanufacturer of dentalhandpieces and turbines inthe world, W&H is renownedfor the outstanding qualityof its products and socialawareness. By supportingSOS Children’s Villages,W&H has been aiding an independentinter national social development

organisation for disadvantaged and orphaned children founded by Her-

nDanville’s new Prep-Start H2O Air Abra-sion System sprays aconical mist of wateraround the air-abra-sive stream to capturethe dust. It is availablefor all existing Prep-Starts and can easilybe retrofitted to a clas-sic PrepStart system in about 30 min-utes, the company says.

With PrepStartH2O, the air pressure, abrasive and waterflow can be easily ad-justed for ideal clini-cal use. A water se -lector switch allowsuse with or withoutthe water spray. Ei-ther 27μ or 50μ alu-

minum oxide can be used. Water is easily added to the removable tank.

Placing the filled tank in a microwavefor up to 60 seconds will bring the water to 46 °C, a temperature whichhas been reported to enhance patientcomfort. According to the company, cutting performance is not reduced bythe water. A foot pedal provides instan-taneous on/off control.

Tip sizes are available in .48 mmand .38 mm (.019” & .015”). Nozzles areeasily interchangeable and both hand-

piece and nozzle are steam auto-clavable. As the PrepStart is poweredby a simple air connection, the devicecontains no electronics nor requiresany electrical connections. The unitoperates at 4 to 8 bars (60 to 120 psi).

PrepStart H2O comes completewith one handpiece, .48 mm nozzle, air lines and 27μ aluminum oxide. Instructions provide details on useand clinical suggestions.

Air abrasion, which does not mi-crofracture enamel, is one of the mostconservative treatments. The methodallows prepping into dentin with littlediscomfort, so that anesthesia is rarelyneeded. It is also silent and eliminatesthe whine and vibration of the drill.According to the company, dentistscan treat multiple quadrants in one appointment and with one diagnosisas there is no need to wait for anesthe-sia to take effect. 7
