Message from our PatronsWe are delighted to be the foundation patrons of Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS).

Having had hands on experience with visual art on our wine labels and performing art at the concerts at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River for some 40 years we have experienced first hand the very positive effect artists’ creativity can have on a business.

MRROS is proving to be a great stimulus for the arts community of the Cape-to-Cape Region of South Western Australia. This year around 100 artists are displaying their works and creativity while opening their venues to the public throughout the district.

We wish all involved with the 2015 MRROS event enormous success and encourage you, the public, to venture out and about to enjoy these 17 days of cultural exploration in our very special South West environment.

Showcase ExhibitionThe Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS) SHOWCASE EXHIBITION will be held in the Foyer Gallery Arts Margaret River Cultural Centre from 8th April until 28th April. Artists who are participating in the 2015 MRROS Event will be invited to show a single piece of artwork in the SHOWCASE EXHIBITION with the idea that the exhibition will be a hub for visitors to view some of 2015’s very varied artworks so they might best be able to plan an itinerary of studio visits that most appeal to their own artistic sensibilities. The SHOWCASE EXHIBITION seeks to present a live version of the types of artworks displayed in this Catalogue.

Catalogues will be available to visitors at the exhibition.

A huge thank you to all of our sponsors

WelcomeWelcome to all our participating artists and everyone who chooses to call in to any of their Open Studios and Venues over the 17 days of the 2nd Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS) event, which runs between 11th and 27th April 2015.

We really appreciate the enthusiasm of the 55 artists who are opening up their studios to visitors for the second consecutive year and, of course, we welcome the 46 new artists who are participating for the first time. We thank them all for their willingness to share their creativity with the wider community.

The MRROS event would not get off the ground without the enthusiastic marketing and communication energy of Mechelle Bernhardt and the consummate skill of Emily Douglas of Emily Douglas Design.

This year we have been assisted by a large team of remarkable volunteers. Particularly we thank Julien Sanderson, our Hon Treasurer, who has added bookkeeping for MRROS to his many other local community contributions, Anita Haywood who has taken over as volunteer in charge of Advertisers and Sponsors and Genny Broadhurst who has created and edited the monthly newsletter to the artist members of MRROS and a wider audience. Other wonderful volunteers have sought Friends for MRROS, produced media stories and established Facebook communications.

In 2015 we have been fortunate to receive a $10,000 Icon Award from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River as well as several smaller but nonetheless important grants from our Sponsors who are displayed in the Catalogue. Our Gold Sponsor for 2015 is John Miller from John Miller Design to whom we extend our enormous gratitude for his support. Our advertisers have come on board with increasing commitment this year and we thank them for their contributions. This stronger financial backing and the wonderful support of the local Tourism Associations has meant that MRROS has been able to better market the event this year so we anticipate more visitors in 2015. Thank you everyone for your help.

Above all Jillian Taylor, Vice-Chair and Secretary and the Board hope everyone will enjoy immersing into the artistic talent of the Margaret River region while exploring as many the region’s remarkable attractions as possible.

Moving to Busselton 21 years ago inspired Gay to paint award winning landscapes. This culminated in 5 solo exhibitions including the Artopia Open Studios. Selling her work consistently over that time, has encouraged experimentation in varied techniques. Collagraphs and large treescapes in oils, acrylics, pastels and smaller works in gouache and mixed media have become a major part of her work.

Jane Hardy has studied and worked in the visual arts for over 20 years. Her approach has seen a consistent flow of art and she refers to a “hands on experience”. Both Jane’s art practice and studies have focused on and around installation art, with a passion for exploration and experimentation in various media to produce artwork in both 2D and 3D format. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and regularly participates in group exhibitions in Western Australia and further afield. Jane is represented in the collections of Dale Alcock Homes and the WA Water Authority. Jane is an ASL1 Lecturer at the South West Institute of Technology, and co-ordinates the Visual Arts qualifications at Bunbury, Busselton, Manjimup, and Margaret River campuses.

Painting is one of the necessities of life, difficult to live without!I am careful to use archival products and methods and work in many mediums - oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolour and drawing.Water in its many forms is my favourite subject to paint, and living in this beautiful part of the world gives me inspiration.I’m looking forward to meeting you and showing my latest work at the Margaret River Region Open Studios this year.My work may be also viewed at Jacksons in Busselton

My hope is that by observing the dynamic interaction of colour and tone you will become aware of a sense of movement: of vitality: perhaps a sense of something passing. My vibrant works in oil, acrylic, dry media and mixed media are inspired by place or an intuitive response to the natural or social environment. The series ‘Secrets’, ‘Sunlight’, ‘Coastal Flowers’, ‘Old World’ and ‘After the Rains’ emerge. ‘Provenance’ is a new series inspired by family farmers, makers and producers who grow natural fibres or put food on our plates. Original works and museum quality fine art prints are available.

I studied fine art in the 1980’s at Stellenbosch University. After years of designing and installing gardens I’ve had a year to rediscover my paints. It’s been lots of fun reacquainting myself with the locals on the back roads of Jindong. I guess I truly am, a lady of the land.

Suzanna is bewitched by watercolours. Magic happens when the pigment combines with water and touches the paper. The spell is taking her through florals, landscapes and abstracts. She never tires of experimenting with this elusive medium knowing that at any moment a fresh delight is to be discovered. Flametree Wines will be hosting Suzanna as artist in residence throughout MRROS. Come and visit her in the beautiful surrounds of the cellar door and share in her small victories.

Welcome to my studio. My art career began after training in the UK as a stained glass artist, completing public and private commissions on my return to WA. I subsequently completed a BA (Visual Art – Jewellery & 3D Design) at Curtin University and maintained a studio practice using precious and semi-precious metals to craft small scale sculpture and conceptual jewellery. I now paint using acrylics and oils; drawing inspiration from large granite formations and the wheat belt country in which I was raised.

Kerry Rocchi

In this second year of exhibiting my paintings, I am showcasing the further development of the technique of tonal painting, as taught by John Garde. This method has provided me with a secure structure for representational painting. The liveliness of the image, created by maintaining a tonal key, is a stimulus for exploration of form, leading to both abstraction and realistic picture making. Using oils, which enable surfaces rich in texture and colour, has allowed me to examine my own ideas, values and aesthetics with confidence and originality.

Helen Waterhouse

The concept of my work is based on a search for the inherent qualities of light, colour and form that comprises the basic elements of beauty. With a mixture of media including painting, installation and photography, I create layers that explore these aesthetic qualities and I reveal them in abstraction.I have been a practising visual artist since 2004. I graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Art and Design in 2011. My first solo exhibition was at the Margaret River Cultural Centre in 2012. I won the Best Emerging Artist’s Award in 2013 at the Bunbury South West Survey Exhibition. My details and work are on the Linkedin website. Three of my works are currently exhibited at Bettenay Wines, Tom Cullity Drive, Cowaramup.

As a student of John Garde I have been focusing on tonal values this past year and while on holidays in USA had the opportunity to see a collection of rare French pots from the 19th century.I was so fascinated by their unusual markings, that I just had to get out my paints and re-create them on canvas; their unusual shape, drips, markings and unique character were all part of the painting process. They also drew attention to my interest in French Provencial architecture and artefacts which has resulted in a new series of artworks.

Adam Stanley is a seascape artist who has been surfing and painting from the early age of six. Following both passions, Adam spends most of his time in search of the perfect wave to surf and paint. Being up close to the waves in Australia while surfing and diving is where Adam finds most of his inspiration often transferring this energy onto canvas. Adams unique vibrant and highly textured style comes from being self-taught and expressing his art from a surfers’ perspective as if you were in front of the wave about to be sucked into the painting.

I rework my images to create photographic montages which are now available in a range of homewares, including cushions, bags and drink coasters.I print my images on quality archival and rag photographic papers. My images are also available on canvas, glass or metal. These are mounted or framed, printed on gift cards, or incorporated into hand-crafted journals using a variety of papers.

I have always enjoyed painting, even as a child. In my past life I was a traditional signwriter for some 30 years,I have also studied at numerous art institutions and under such artists as Brian Simmonds and John Garde. The work that I do is a very stylized technique influenced by the Impressionists and the Fauvists. I mainly paint local landscapes with a twist. I have lived in the area now for 15 years and I hope to see you at my humble studio.

An introduction to pastels in the 80’s has made these my first love, but I have more recently branched out and become motivated by the media: acrylics, inks, porcelain painting, encaustic and water soluble oils.I paint what I see around me, working both “en plein air” and from my own photo references. As a result, people and animals figure prominently, but are part of an eclectic hoard of art work. The colours of my life are rich and amazing. I do art for ME, but love to share my colours with others.

My passion for exotic timber carving and travelling has lead me to create woodwork from New Zealand to Hawaii and Antartica. My art is influenced from surfing, sailing and Maori-style carving with some influence from Lord of the Rings. My works are a mixture of vibrant and colourful paintings depicting unique landscapes and flora in Western Australia to the underwater scenes of my childhood home in the Maldives. I am constantly drawn to the intricate details in nature and morphing them with figures draws on my inspiration of portraying human interactions with our fragile environment.I have always been interested in drawing and painting and completed Bachelor of Arts at Curtin University, in 2006. My first Solo Exhibition was held in 2002 and have showed in-group exhibitions within Australia and overseas. My works are displayed in various private collections around the world, including the Maldivian National Art Gallery and my paintings can be viewed at the Wilyabrup Dreaming Gallery.

Steve PeaseSteve is the consummate contemporary craftsperson, designing and creating works of art in metal and glass. As a jeweller/metalsmith he produces unique handmade jewellery and uses the traditional skills of a silversmith to creates one-off contemporary hollow-ware. His kiln formed glass or slumped glass explores new frontiers in art glass. The glass explores the fused red colour of copper or the texturing power of plaster to create a range of bowls and panels.

Mary-Lynne StrattonMary-Lynne works from her studio in Yallingup and is continually exploring the landscape around her, both in the south west and northern parts of WA. All her works are influenced by the landscape but are not necessarily realistic portrayals. She says “It is important to capture the feeling, memory and spirit of the place.” “Whilst some works are ethereal in nature, others are more spontaneous and gestural. It is important for me to be fluid in my approach and experimental with my medium of oils to keep my interpretations of the landscape interesting”.

Kay takes her inspiration from the natural world and conveys some of the issues relating to land use and conservation. Her subjects, particularly birds, are imbued with characteristics that connect with the viewer. “I want to convey the importance of a healthy ecosystem, one that can support all these beautiful creatures for generations to come.”

After more than two decades of teaching, in visual arts, studying bookbinding in 2000 was a much needed creative revival and the realisation I had found my niche. For the past 15 years I have integrated the making, restoration and publishing of limited edition books into my art practice, using and teaching both new technology and traditional skills.Combining mixed media and print making techniques within a book structure extends my capacity to frame and develop concepts and images. The faithful restoration of old books connects me to the Artisans of the past.

The Margaret River region provides enough inspiration to fuel a lifetime of artistic inspiration.Having lived here for 30 years there has been a constant flow of ideas garnered from observations of the local environment. In particular I find the energy of the coastal zone most appealing. The many moods of the ocean, the expansive horizons, the underwater other - worldliness are powerful stimulants for the mind and soul.

Robyn studied Fine Art at W.A.I.T. majoring in sculpture, but today her art practice is focussed on printmaking. Robyn is a sculpture and textiles lecturer at TAFEWA. “I use the human form to view my life and it’s interaction with the environment. My prints are focused on life experiences and the influence those have had on my thoughts and demeanour. Sometimes I take a satirical look at life and the people around me. The interplay of pattern and landscape overlays the figure to give a hint of the exotic in my prints.”

Rachel’s work usually has a continuous theme throughout each body of work, either an individual or a documentary style which investigates human emotion and interaction. The paintings in Rachel Coad’s recent work examine this theme by merging the expressions observed between two thoughts. By identifying and combining many facets of one moment, Coad’s muted and intense works delve deeper into subconscious thought and uncover an intimate engagement with the self. Rachel’s current body of work is a look at historic rural WA.

From a humble beginning of a handmade mud bricks studio to a purpose built gallery workshop constructed ten years ago.Combining a variety of techniques: throwing, slip casting and hand building she creates pieces for everyday use as well as collection pieces. Valma is an artist / jeweller who designs and creates unique contemporary jewellery using sterling silver and gem stones. She also enjoys drawing, painting and printmaking. The works are influenced by the natural environment surrounding her Yallingup home and the human form. The colours of the sky, the sparkle of the light on the bush, our incredible flora and fauna and the beach all impact her work. She attempts to bring “the person from within” into her works. This could be a piece of jewellery displaying the wearer’s character, such as a sense of pride or optimism.

“With wit and engaging visual skill Pericles has enabled us to see the world from his unique perspective. We become more aware of the things we hold dear and the ideas that have shaped us. That’s not an easy task, but it is one that Leon has done with unique flair and quite extraordinary commitment. He is sympathetically creating a world rich in humour and sentiment. His work is packed tight with visual images and wonderful ideas that sweep you up with a visual whirlpool to conjure up a world of joyous engagement”.From Professor Ted Snell’s forward to the Pericles’ Book ‘Ophthalmic Confection’ 2012

During the last decade or so the ever increasing flood of cheap, mass-produced consumer goods with short lifespans has become very frustrating - we buy and throw away so much at great cost to the planet; objects have become devoid of soul and memory. My funky up-cycling shed and vintage caravans are an attempt to inspire people to see the beauty and charm in things given a second life. Everything is made of ‘old stuff’ turned into happy, colourful, whimsical, fun and funky - and of course useful - one-off pieces like home textiles, mix and match crockery, painted chairs, quirky objects and receptacles, hats and bags, hand-made decorations and of course the 3 caravans. They are installations with stories - a celebration of all good things in life.

Evelyn is a classically trained jeweller and goldsmith skilled in the centuries old tradition of lamp fired Bohemian glass bead making. She is a keeper of the craft, importing precious glass rods from the dwindling stocks held in the cellars of New Gablonz, the German post war centre of this beautiful but vanishing art form.Transplanted from Germany to Broome in Australia’s remote North West, Evelyn found work with Linneys, internationally renowned creators of exquisite South Sea Pearl jewellery. In cahoots with Linneys’ team and several of their adventurous clients, Evelyn discovered that lustrous South Sea Pearls were the perfect complement to her beads.

Laurie has a love of the absurd, especially when it is combined with irony and mystery. He is a keen observer of society and life and his surreal works are often a series of social observations that form narrative threads woven into a bigger picture. He tries to achieve this without being patronising allowing the viewer to make up their own mind regarding his intentions.

Creating pictures through the mediums of painting, drawing & photography is a key element in how I enjoy life. I enjoy seeing light and shadows playing through trees; I love birds displaying all of their flighty characteristics; I love the diversity of buildings and street people in large City landscapes. So put simply, I paint pictures of birds, bush and buildings. I benefit these days from my years working as a design draftsman: there is a strong influence in how I both recognise and represent detail in paintings of birds and buildings in particular. I received first prize awards at Harvey and Pinjarra Art Shows for landscape paintings.

K erry is drawn to those characters that so confidently own their lives in a society that burdens the modern world with its expectations. Since moving to Margaret River, Chloe Wilder has been exploring the surf and the people who frequent the waves in and around Margaret River. She has spent time in Melbourne this year developing her skills at RMIT and exhibiting work. Her paintings have a dream like quality, a hazy memory of a moment captured on film or plucked from the salty banks of her mind and brushed onto one of her recycled surfboards. Though she has shown in various group exhibitions in Margaret River her work is only available privately at present in her leafy courtyard studio.

Talliesen grew up in Northern Queensland and the rich vibrant colours of that tropical environment is to be found in her work. She draws inspiration from music, poetry and sculpture and is fascinated by faces and the secrets behind them. Talliesen has a passion for mixed media, often combining found objects and papier-mâché with acrylic on canvas. She also “restores” furniture, which she calls ‘Artstoration’. Her art sometimes spills out of her studio into the garden, much to the bemusement of her neighbours! Come enjoy a cuppa in the garden while the kids paint a picture.

I was a writer and poet until 2011, when a diagnosis of breast cancer changed all that. My energies were redirected to dealing with chemotherapy and the associated illness. However, I still needed to find a creative outlet, so I turned to painting. I have a deep love of animals, so what transpired has been a wonderful journey of discovery for me.I like to think my passion shines through in the light in their eyes, and the detail in their coats, skin or feathers. I have been doing commissions for pet portraits since arriving in Margaret River last year, and loving it!

I was born with Obsessive Creative Disorder, I have been studying art formally since I was 12, on and off, although I also have Degrees in Education and Literature. I have a long-standing obsession with identity and masks, both literal and figurative, and I have been making masks for many years. Recent obsessions are sacred geometry; resulting in mandalas, currently exhibited at Blue Ginger Cafe; and dragons. At the moment I am creating large clay dragons for the Margaret River Open Studios.

Old newspapers, bus tickets, labels and ephemeral print of all kinds are recycled with a contemporary vibe but his work has a tangible and empathetic connection with the past.Chris’ freelance background as a graphic designer and illustrator informs his current practice, with a distinct emphasis on text and the use of lettering as pattern.Images of childhood, fascinating textures and an ironic wit – all from a load of other people’s cast-offs!

There she exhibited her latest vineyard scenes which have a 3D quality created by incorporating a unique metalwork overlay. Jenny has a diploma of Transpersonal Art Therapy. Exhibiting her work in many solo and group exhibitions she is represented by Jahroc Galleries in Margaret River and her work can also be viewed at Xanadu Winery.

Robyn works in fabric sculpture, a comparatively new art form using recycled natural fibres, local timbers & fabric hardener. Her works, for indoors/outdoors, are a collection of figurines, busts & plaques celebrating the female form with all its strengths and weaknesses.“I start with a plan but the textiles add their own movement and interpretation once saturated with the hardener so every one is unique. Each piece is a journey of discovery and I have found they evoke much reaction. The most common comment about my work is ‘I’ve never seen it before’... my favourite comment is ‘exquisite’.

Inspiration comes from Margaret River’s beautiful forests and seascapes. Olivia studied drawing, painting and design at Perth Art School in the early 1970’s. Later in life she qualified as a primary school teacher after attending Murdoch University in Perth and spent many years teaching in schools throughout the South West. She now runs a small business teaching visual art and creating and selling her own works of art. She enjoys using acrylics, watercolours and pastels. She has exhibited work in individual and group exhibitions.

Lynne MitchellI find endless inspiration for my work in the rocks, sediments and landscapes I encounter around me.My background as a geologist has always influenced and informed my creative practice. Hence a common theme throughout my work is the concept of hidden histories embedded within layered landscapes. The textures and patterns in nature hide endless stories waiting to be revealed.I use a variety of media, printmaking techniques and textured imagery in my work to convey the concept of buried narratives, including my own, within the rocks of layered landscapes.

Denise GilliesPrintmaking has become my primary passion in recent years. Collographs and monoprints feature strongly in the art work that I undertake. However, mixed media work and encaustic art are becoming increasingly important in my art practice. All three media - printmaking, mixed media and encaustic art- have in common the possibility of the unexpected. And how liberating I find this unexpected aspect of these techniques!

Denise Gillies and Lynne Mitchell are two artists and friends living in the Southwest of WA who are passionate about printmaking and mixed media. They have exhibited individually and together as well as in group shows with The Southwest Printmakers (TSWP).

The image is of a recent watercolour on paper of a cloaked and tattooed man wearing a feathered headdress. Dramatic poses are of interest to me as I enjoy the possibility of an obscure narrative.I have been thinking of transitions lately, with its inherent elements of struggle to an altered state. Maybe even the struggle that creativity travels.Wander over and pose for your portrait to be drawn, with thread and a sewing machine.

It is important to document this rapidly changing rural environment. The focal point and centre of the project is the Darnells store and a rough circle drawn from there was the inspiration for the title of 9 Miles. I have loved being creative for as long as I can remember.I am very lucky now to have my own studio on our property near Witchcliffe, where I divide my time working in a variety of mediums including mosaics, soapstone sculptures and acrylic paint on plant pots, gourds and the odd canvas. My love of gardening and nature are the main sources for my creative inspiration, and I love combining the two.It gives me great pleasure creating bright colourful fun pieces that bring a splash of joy to others.

Phil has always had an affinity with art ,in particular painting. He is constantly influenced by his natural surroundings and love of the ocean which is reflected in his works and life as an artist. His travels to Europe and the Middle- East in his early days, and time spent in Broome and remote WA islands inspires his strong use of colour and semi-abstract style. His continuing inspiration comes from living in the Margaret River region since 1996, where the local bush and coastal areas feature strongly in his paintings. He sells direct from his Studio, “The Old Stables”.

Russell Ord has built an international reputation in the surfing world, highly respected for his ability to capture moments that would seem impossible to record. He is a no frills professional photographer who is one of a handful in the world who capture images in extreme wave conditions. Ord who shoots from the water, has pioneered a new level of surf photography and brought the empty wave to a pure art form.

My studio overlooks water. I have concentrated this body of work on the vast world of water. From the simple tap to the oceans; I can only skim the surface of this well of information. During the past year from the studio window I have observed many colour changes and moods, thick layers of algae as they disappeared; in winter the surface disturbed by lashings of rain; other times it has been mirror-like on a calm summer’s morning. Many of these oil paintings are small and they are painted in a variety of styles.

My work is driven by my travel experiences, being inspired by colours and shapes found in the landscape, the water, or quirky architecture. My current pieces reflect the past year since leaving Margaret River in May. Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Sri Lanka, England, France, Spain and Morocco. I managed to set up a make-shift studio in Granada, where I was able to finally put some ideas on canvas, but the bulk of my work would be completed in my own studio in Margaret River. I work in oils, building textures with gesso and achieving depth through many layers of paint. I work very spontaneously, and the final product rarely resembles the original idea, thus keeping me on my toes! The biggest challenge is recapturing in my paintings the wondrous places I’ve had the privilege to see.
