When I Must Leave You When I must leave you for a little while
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years,
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all things the same,
Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you, and hold you near;
And never, never, be afraid to die,
I’ll be waiting for you in the sky.

Reverend James L. Friday THE LIFE OF MRS. ANNABELLE SATTERWHITE WALKER
Annabelle Satterwhite Walker was born October 25, 1921 in Newberry County,
South Carolina. Annabelle was the third child of Hampton and Fannie Lindsay
Satterwhite. She was a loving sister to Nathaniel Satterwhite, Janelle Satterwhite
Williams, Henry Satterwhite, and Lulee Satterwhite Grady. Family was very
important to Annabelle, and she was a caregiver to her parents, brother, and sister.
Along with her siblings, Annabelle was introduced to her Lord and Savior at an early
age in their home church of Branch Hill United Methodist Church, of Saluda
County. At an early age, Ann or Belle, as she was lovingly called by family and
friends, moved to Columbia, South Carolina to live with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and
Mrs. Manning (Beulah Lindsay) Baxley. A brief period later, her family moved to
Columbia, and became members of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Annabelle was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She received her
Bachelor’s Degree from Allen University, and did further study at the University of
Wisconsin, Madison. Her career as an executive assistant allowed her to serve the
presidents of Kittrell College in North Carolina and Allen University, before moving
to the United Methodist Church Conference Office, where she retired.
As a youth, Annabelle was actively involved in the church. She loved reading
scriptures daily. One of her favorite scriptures was Proverbs 3:5-6. Because of her
faithfulness and commitment, she was elected to attend a National Youth
Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. She worked faithfully for years in Wesley on
various committees and on the Church Board. She became very active in the Sunday
school and the Epworth League. As a true servant of God, she served as president of
the United Methodist Women and church secretary. Again, her dedication led her to
travel to the 1968 General Conference, which met in Dallas, Texas. Her passion for
the work of the church resulted in her traveling to Louisville, Kentucky where she
participated in the United Methodist Women’s Assembly. Annabelle has held many
elected positions in the local church. Among them are Chairperson of Council on
Ministries, President of the United Methodist Women, Chair of Communications,
Editor of the Wesley Informer Newsletter President of the Wesleyan Service Guild,
and General Chair of Caring Groups. Beyond the local church, she has held
positions at the conference and district levels. She was a member of the Conference
Board of Laity and the Commission on Religion and Race. She served as Vice
President of the Conference United Methodist Women and secretary of the
Columbia Bethlehem Community Center Board.
Annabelle was always passionate and committed to community activism. Her
service included secretary of the NAACP State Conference of Branches and
secretary of Ward 9. She also extended her service as a lifelong member of the Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Annabelle Satterwhite Walker now leaves to cherish her loving memory: three
devoted nieces, Parthenia Satterwhite, Allison Jordan, and Karen Robinson; nephew,
Henry Satterwhite, Jr., whom she loved as her surrogate children. She also leaves a
brother-in-law, John C. Grady, Jr. and other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was known for her kindness, generosity, love of family, friends, and her
beautiful gentle smile. Her memory will be long lived by all who knew and loved
her.
