Recess• We go outside unless the

temperature (with heat index) exceeds 100 degrees or drops below 20 degrees (with wind chill). Please be sure to dress your child for the weather.

• Please have your child wear tennis shoes to school. These are the safest choice for climbing on playground equipment. If your child is not in the appropriate shoe, he/she will not be able to climb at recess.

Newsletters• I will be e-mailing the newsletter this

Literacy• Spelling (Word study) – Will be done by word

families.− Will be assessed on Friday along with our two

High Frequency words. − Sight Words – These words are not to be spelled

by your student. They just need to recognize them and read them. Practice frequently at home to master these!

Guided Reading - Will be done in small groups.- Others will be at literacy stations that involve reading and writing practice.

Literacy Instruction - We will use stories, poems and songs to learn about many reading conventions, such as making connections , synthesizing, creating images and determining importance as we read. These skills will help us deepen our understanding of the text as we read.

Math• Everyday Math uses games and visuals to

help students gain an understanding of math concepts. We gradually move to more abstract concepts throughout the year.

• Family letters should be put in blue Important Papers folder at home. Answers to Homelinks for the unit are on the back of the letter.

• Homelinks are the homework pages for math. These will come home most nights.

• Otter Creek Math (Rocket Math) will be starting after Labor Day. This program helps students master math facts. More details will be coming soon!
