4The engineering sector generated 455.6 billion GDP for the UK,
thats 27.1% of the total UK GDP.
However we need many more engineers. Engineering companies are
projected to need 182,000 people with engineering skills each year to 2022.
This means we need to double the number of graduates and apprentices
entering the engineering industry.
Filling the demand for NEW engineering jobs will generate an additional
27 billion per year from 2022 to the UK economy this is equivalent to
building 1,800 schools or 110 hospitals!
The Situation...
Only around 4 in 10 11-14 year olds see a career in
engineering as desirable.
Of a cohort of 11 year olds, around one in five will
achieve a GCSE physics A*- C grade.
Of that group, only one in twenty five will obtain
physics A*- C grade A level.
Only one in fifty of that group will
obtain an engineering degree.
The Challenge...
Source of data and recommendations: The State of Engineering - Key Facts 2016 - Engineering UK *The Perkins Review; Sir John Perkins. Published by Department of Business, Innovation and Skills November 2013.
5We need to support teachers and careers advisors in
understanding the range of modern engineering roles,
career paths, and vocational jobs available in todays economy.
The Perkins Review* recommended that the most effective way for
business to address the STEM challenge is to coordinate activities through
Engineering UK initiatives such as the Big Bang events and the Tomorrows
Engineers programme.
And that high quality engineering engagement interventions and careers
inspiration is essential for 11-14 year olds, and should include at least one
engineering experience with an employer.

The National Science + Engineering Competition (NSEC) is an initiative of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and is coordinated by the British Science Association in partnership with Young Engineers and The Big Bang. NSEC is open to all 11-18 year olds living in the UK and in full-time education and aims to recognise and reward young peoples achievements in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project work.
There will be two streams; Science/Maths & Engineering/Technology - both streams will have Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories. Up to 15 finalists, as chosen by a team of expert judges, will be invited to present their projects at the national final, which will be held in March 2017.
Our Headline Sponsor would be invited to present all the NSEC awards in the final awards ceremony, feature in all press awards photographs and to send staff to assist with competition judging.

Inspiration AwardsWould you like to sponsor an award that has been specifically designed to reward skills and subject-knowledge relevant to you or your companys interests? Sponsoring an Inspiration Award is the ideal choice. Our Gold and Inspiration Award Sponsors are invited to name and present awards of their own.
The Inspiration Awards provide an additional opportunity for students entering NSEC to be rewarded for their efforts. Award categories can be created to accommodate Sponsors individual requirements.
Examples of Inspiration Award categories might include:
Sponsors of each Inspiration Award have the privilege of judging the students projects on the day (with advice and support on judging criteria offered by MerseySTEM) and then presenting their sponsored award at the final awards ceremony as well as featuring in official Inspiration Awards press photography.

Our Headline and Platinum Sponsors will have the opportunity to select which of these three prestigious Premier Awards that they would like to sponsor, with our Headline Sponsors being offered first choice.
