College Attendance

It is widely recognised that students need to attend school on a regular basis to gain themaximum benefit from schooling and in doing so optimise their life opportunities. It is alsowidely recognised that attendance problems are best managed by early identification andintervention. The School Education Act 1999 requires compulsory aged students, asdefined in the Act, to attend school, or participate in an educational programme of a school,on the days on which the school is open for instruction unless an arrangement in writinghas been entered into for a student. At Joseph Banks Secondary College we recognise the strong link between studentattendance and student achievement and are developing policies and processesto engage parents as partners in maximising student attendance and ensure that there isalways timely communication to parents about their child’s attendance.

BYODD Minimum Specifications

Device: Apple iPad Air with Protective Case. We are aware that iPad Air 32GB is no longer available in stores.

However, if students have this version iPad, it is compatible with our system.

Specifications Protective Case

Joseph Banks Secondary College runs a one-to-one computing device program to enhance student learning. After much research regarding the best technology to support the teaching and learning programs at Joseph Banks College we decided on the Apple iPad Air as oursupported Bring Your Own Designated Device (BYODD) and request that each family support the provision of this for students by acquiring an Apple iPad Air for theirchild. Outlined below are the minimum specifications information you will need and it is important to ensure these are met in order to enable the student to access the internetthough the College’s WiFi network as well as accommodating the electronic resources provided by the College. The downloading of the electronic resources will be enabled through either home internet connections or through the College’s network. As the device is purchased by the family and is personal property, the College can take no responsibility for the loading of content by students which are deemedinappropriate. Also, insurance coverage for the loss or accidental damage to the device is required and is the responsibility of the parent.

The BYODD must be covered by insurance for theft and accidental damage.

For example: This could be arranged through Home and/or Contents Insurance, purchased as a separate

You should investigate these options yourself. Joseph Banks Secondary College will not recommend one

option over another or broker any arrangements.

The iPad will need to be provisioned by the College’s IT Team.

Joseph Banks Secondary College uses Zulu Desk as a Mobile Device Management tool, and this along with

Instrumental Music School Services

As an Independent Public school, we are fortunate to be able to access the services of IMSS(Instrumental Music School Services, previously known as SIM), which provides a limited number ofplaces to selected students. Students are selected based on the results of an aptitude test, interest inlearning a musical instrument, parent commitment and support, musical ability as demonstrated inschool music activities, and physical suitability to play their selected musical instrument. This programis a scholarship and lessons are not charged. There is a fee for hiring an instrument.

At Joseph Banks Secondary College (JBSC), Instrumental Music Tuition is offered in two streams.

Testing

In Term 4 week 2 the college will be holding an aptitude test for students interested in being part of theIMSS program. These tests will be conducted on Monday 21 October 2019 from 9am to 11am. Pleasenote that students will need to be dropped off at the College and collected by a parent/guardian. It is important to note that sitting the aptitude test does not guarantee a position within the program asspots are limited. Students who take lesson through the IMSS program are expected to join either theCollege's Jazz Band or the Concert Band.

Instrumental Tuition Program Charges

Notice of Lesson Absence

The ITP fees for 2020 are $31 per 30 minute lesson (individual) or $18.00 per 30 minute lesson(shared) for all instruments. Failure to pay the account will result incancellation of tuition until payment is made in full. If you wish to have a payment plan you must contactthe Manager of Corporate Services within 48 hours of receiving your invoice. Parents will be charged for all lessons that their child attends and for all lessons that their child is absentfrom for which the tutor has not received appropriate notice. Parents will not be charged for lessons thatare not scheduled due to teacher absence, or if the tutor excuses the student due to other reasons

Instrumental Tutors must be contacted by 6pm the night before the scheduled lesson in order to beadvised of illness; failure to contact the tutor will result in a charge being made for the scheduled lesson. For all other student absences students must inform their tutor at least one week in advance. Failure togive this notice will result in a charge being made for that lesson.

Instrumental Tuition Program

In addition to the SIM program, Joseph Banks also offers the opportunity to participate in theInstrumental Tuition Program (ITP). In this stream, students will receive individual or shared (paired)lessons: each of thirty minutes duration. The Instrumental Tuition Program attracts additional charges. The benefits of these programs are numerous, but lie primarily in the fact that your child will receivehigh quality instrumental tuition and enjoy the physical and mental rewards of playing a musicalinstrument.

School Instrument Hire Fee

Joseph Banks College is progressively acquiring a bank of loan instruments, which can be hired tostudents for a fee of $150 (subject to availability). The payment of this charge helps to cover the cost ofmaintaining and upgrading instruments, and also entitles the student to the use of the instrument duringschool vacations. This fee does not cover negligent or careless damage, and repair costs will be chargedto the hirer. The School Instrument Hire Fee will be invoiced at the commencement of lessons, andbeginning of each year thereafter. Parents are encouraged to purchase an instrument when the student demonstrates and maintains goodprogress. The Music Department is able to assist in obtaining instruments and will give advice whereneeded. Ownership of an instrument fosters pride in students and is often conducive to a more positiveand productive practice routine. For further information on school instruments or other sources of instrument hire, please contact theMusic Department (see contacts below) or speak with your child’s tutor.

Storage and Care of Instruments and Music

All students are expected to clean & maintain their instruments regularly and mustconsult their teacher on the appropriate methods.

Parental Support and Contact

Learning an instrument is a rewarding experience, and is made all the more worthwhile when a diligentpractice routine is maintained. Practice each day is more beneficial than ‘cramming’ the night before alesson, and tutors will suggest an appropriate amount of practice time. Parents are encouraged toensure that practice is completed and to keep in contact with their child’s tutor regarding their learning.

This is your P&C

Get involved Join today

The P&C is the voice of the parents. It’s at P&C meetings that decisions affecting certain aspects of our children’s

time at school are made. P&C meetings are usually held twice a term. Any parent, guardian or community member

can attend and it will cost you just $1 per year to be a member and have a vote.

P&C associations are a great way to:

• Get the inside story on what’s really happening in the college (not the gossip).

• The principal usually is available to answer questions and other staff members attend too.

• Make a difference to your child’s education and create better relationships with the staff.

• Contribute to the school’s resources through various fundraising projects.

• Meet other parents.

Schools have their own budgets but invariably they need more than the budget allows. That’s where the P&C

becomes a really valuable partner. So far we have held a number of fundraising events run by our volunteers

such as sausage sizzles and cake stalls. All money raised by the P&C must be used for the benefit of the school, including the yearly $20 P&C voluntary contribution. As a P&C member, you get to vote on how funds are used

and ultimately, that can only benefit your child too. Follow us on Facebook to ensure you don’t miss any upcoming meetings or events.
