Summer Packet

Parents,

This packet was created to help your child retain what they learned during the

school year. The pages were set up where your child will do some language arts

work throughout the course of the whole summer. The packet will give students

the opportunity to practice writing, reading comprehension, and many more skills

that were covered this year. It should not take your child more than 20 to 30

minutes to complete one front and back sheet.

For this packet to work best, it is important to only do what is allotted for that

week, which is only do one worksheet front and back for each week of summer.

Finishing the entire packet in one week will not help your child retain the

information throughout the summer. It is also important to allow your child to work

independently and then review the pages with them when completed. Each page is

structured to encourage your child to become more independent when working.

There is also a reading log included in this packet. This way your child can record

how much they read each day. It is suggested that children read 20 minutes a day.

Please have your child return the packet to me on the first day of school. This

packet will count as the first grade of the new school year.

Get small cups and fill them 2/3 full with juice. Put some fruit, such as, strawberries in. Put plastic spoons in for the popsicle sticks. Freeze them; they should be ready to eat in a few hours. ** You can use gummy bears instead of fruit! **

Bees are amazing insects. They work hard to get food. Bees get their food from flowers.

This is why bees buzz around flowers.

Reading Comprehension: Paddle a Canoe

A canoe is a small boat. It holds about two people. How do you make a canoe

move in the water?

Wear a life jacket, so you are safe. Sit down in the canoe. Pick up a paddle. The

paddle has a handle at one end. It has a blade at the other end.

Reading Comprehension: Stay Safe in the Sun

The day is sunny. You go outside to play. Wait! Are you sun-safe? The sun’s rays

are strong. They can hurt your skin and eyes.

Put on sunscreen first. It should have an SPF of 30 or more. You can find the

number on the bottle. Rub the sunscreen all over your skin. Do not forget your ears and

feet!

Clothes help block the sun’s rays Try to wear a shirt with long sleeves. Wear a hat

and sunglasses, too.

How else can you stay sun-safe? Play in the shade. Shade is an area where the

sun’s rays are blocked. Find shade under a tree or a beach umbrella.
