Chapter 1: Introduction

Overview

This guide provides details and instructions for Fujifilms new Frontier Workflow Management Software

(MS) for retail lab systems.

In this guide, you will learn:

Operational safety and user conditions of the MS system and hardware (see page 5).

Component names and system configurations (see page 11).

Start-up and shut-down information (see page 13).

About MS01 screens (see page 14).

The basic operations for using digital images (see page 15).

The basic operations for using images from film (see page 19).

In this chapter, you will learn:

Using this Guide

Be aware of the following guidelines when using this guide.

WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,could result in serious injury or even death.

CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may

result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe

practices and property-damage-only accidents.

Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Definitions

Term Definition

A1 Scanner software that works with the SP 1500, SP 2000, and SP 2500

scanners. This is a sub-section of the MS01 system.

Cancel Selecting Cancel while using MS01 will ensure that the order is not

processed.

Digital Link Request Spooler Developed by Fujifilm, this application performs all background

processing for producing prints and CDs, receiving input from external

sources such as kiosk, and communications with remote systems via

the internet.

It also manages a database containing all production information, and

is responsible for scheduling of tasks and devices throughout the

system.This application is also known as Simon.

FDD Frontier Driver Direct. This service provides more control and greater

messaging capabilities when printing.

FMPC The Frontier Manager PC, also known as the LPC. One of the terms

used for a separate computer used to drive an LP printer and receive

data from the scanner (if configured to do so).

Frontier The name used to describe Fujifilm developed printers.

HCIP High capacity image processor. This is a rendering device attached to

the MS01 system. By having an HCIP attached to your MS01 system,

it order processing speed id increased.

ICIII Imaging Controller III computer, formerly known as PIC (photo imaging

controller computer) and DIC (digital imaging controller computer).

Local CD Writer This is a CD writer attached to the IC or an IC Workstation. This

allows for one (1) CD to be written at a time. Local CD writers do not

have the ability to print the labels automatically on the CDs.

LP Laser Printer. This is the abbreviation that pre-pends Fujifilm printer

model names. For example, LP 5000.

LPC Laser Printer Controller, also known as the FMPC. One of the terms

used as a name for the computer, which is separate from the ICIII

computer that is used to drive a printer.

MS01 Also known as the Frontier Workflow Management Software. This isthe overall system, including the scanner software and the printer

software.

MS11 Scanner software that works with SP 500 and SP 3000 scanners.

This is a sub-section of the MS01 system.

Term Definition

Panda (Printer And Device

Application)

Developed by Fujifilm, this application provides an interface between

the Digital Link Request Spooler and various devices, such as

Frontier, Copal, and Epson printers.

It manages device operations and provides status and messages to

the rest of the system in a consistent manner, so that devices mayeasily be interchanged or added, as needed.

Red exclamation mark On the ICIII, this is an emergency shutdown for this complete system.

This will power the IC system off. Note: This is not the proper

shutdown procedure. Only do this if directed to do so by Technical

Support.

On the FMPC, this is an emergency shutdown for Panda. This will not

power off the FMPC box. Note: This is not the proper shutdown

procedure. Only do this if directly by Technical Support.

Rimage This is a 3rd party CD burning device designed for high volumes of CD

creation. This system allows multiple CDs to be written

simultaneously. The Rimage system can print labels directly ontoCDs. Depending on the model of Rimage, it may have two or four CD

burners and a single printer.

Software Launcher This is a tool that allows the user to switch to any of the programs that

are currently running.

SP The abbreviation that pre-pends Fujifilm scanner model names. For

example, SP500.

SPC The name for the computer, separate from the ICIII computer that

drives the scanner.

Suspend Selecting Suspend while using MS01 pauses the order.

Workstation This is another digital input system for the MS01 software. It allowscontrol of a printer, digital ingest, and CD burning.

Chapter 2: Operational Safety & Use Conditions

Safety

Basic Operating Precautions

When accessing the machine interior for inspection or servicing, shut down the system by doing the post-

operational checks, place the built-in circuit breaker in the OFF (K) position, and turn OFF the main power

(external power distribution switch).

Inspecting or servicing the inside of the machine with the main power circuit breaker left ON may expose

personnel to hazardous conditions and damage the machine.

If the machine emits smoke, generates an abnormal sound or its external surface becomes unduly hot,

immediately stop using it, place the built-in circuit breaker in the OFF (K) position, unplug the power

cable, turn OFF the main power circuit breaker, and contact your local dealer.

[1] Do not modify the machine without permission from the manufacturer because

safety assurance features and other essential functions may be impaired. If the

machine needs to be modified, contact your local dealer.

[2] Never remove covers or other parts that are screwed down to avoid the risk of

electric shock or injury to personnel. If any parts need to be unscrewed, contact

your local dealer.

Use only Fujifilm-recommended replacement parts.

IMPORTANT: If parts other than those recommended by Fujifilm are used, thewarranty will be voided.

[3] Do not insert your hands or fingers into the moving parts of the processor

while the machine is in operation to avoid the risk of injury.

[4] Do not insert your hands or fingers under the scanner section while the

machine is in operation to avoid the risk of injury by being caught between the

scanner section and carrier.

[1] Do not operate the machine with cover open/close sensors forced ON while

the covers are open. These sensors serve as safety switches. If they are forced

ON, the system mistakenly assumes that the open covers are closed making

the machine operative, and this may expose personnel to hazardous conditionsand damage the machine.

Never position objects in close proximity to light sources or processing or dryer

section cover vents. Doing so will impair machine ventilation thereby causing

temperature control problems.

[2] Do not stare at the light emitted from the light source for prolonged periods of

time because this may damage your eyesight.

[3] If anything drops into the machine, remove it after turning OFF the power, or

consult your technical representative. If the machine is operated without removing

this foreign matter, mechanical failure or abnormal prints may result.

[4] Do not use any liquid near the keyboard. If a liquid is spilled on the keyboard,

the keyboard may become inoperative due to a short circuit.[5] Do not disconnect the cable connectors located on the rear side of the ICIII

unless instructed by your technical representative. If these connectors are

disconnected, special operations may be required for checking the system.

Cautions Regarding Electric Shock

[1] Utmost care should be taken as the scanner and the processor are connected

to a 100/200/210/220/230/240V AC power source. Avoid the possibility of electric

shock by noting the following:

Never operate the machine if it is wet.

Never operate the machine if the surrounding floor is wet.

Ensure the electrical earth connection is permanently made.

Ensure that all cables are undamaged and correctly connected.

[2] Do not place items such as a cup, plastic bottle, vase, vessel of water, etc. on

the scanner or processor. If the contents (coffee, tea, water, etc.) are spilled,

electric shock to personnel, short circuit in the machine or other accidents may

occur.

[3] Connect the power cable of the scanner to the outlet having the capacity of 10

amperes or higher, and position the cable so that it does not get in the way of the

operator. If the operator steps on the power cable while working, electric shock to

personnel or abnormal operation may result.[4] Do not pull the cables forcibly. If the cables are handled roughly, electric

shock to personnel or abnormal operation may result.

[5] When connecting the power cable to an outlet, take care not to overload the

outlet or wiring accessories such as power strips. Overloading may result in fire

due to heat generation.

[6] Be sure to connect the power cable to the outlet completely. Incomplete

connection may cause fire or electric shock to personnel.

[7] When disconnecting the power cable, be sure to hold the plug. Pulling the

power cable may cause electric shock to personnel or fire due to a short circuit.

[8] Do not handle the power cable with wet hands to avoid the risk of electricshock.

[9] During a thunderstorm, do not touch the machine, power cable, or plug to

avoid the risk of electric shock.

Room Conditions

Temperature: 15 to 30C (59 to 86F)

Ambient room temperatures above 30C (86F) or below 15C (59F) will destabilize processing and

replenisher solution temperatures to the detriment of processing performance. Pay special attention to

room temperatures in wintertime and maintain solution temperatures within designated ranges.

Relative Humidity: 30% to 70%

Relative humidity above 70% will result in inadequate paper transport or improper paper drying,

thus producing abnormal prints. Maintain the ambient room relative humidity within the range of

30% to 70% RH at all times.

Do not expose the processor to the wind blowing from the air conditioner or a room fan. Otherwise

the ambient temperature and humidity cannot be measured correctly and insufficient paper drying

may result.

VentilationProvide an outside air vent close to the processor section and maintain adequate ventilation.

Illumination: 500 lux or lower

Maintain room illumination levels so that no more than 500 lux falls on the scanner and printer upper

surfaces. Should the equipment main body or paper magazine be exposed to direct outside light or strong

reflected light, use curtains or blinds to shield the equipment from such extraneous light.

REFERENCE

Two 40W fluorescent lamps provide 500 lux of illumination at a distance of 1 meter (3.3 ft.). Excessively

high indoor illumination levels will adversely affect the quality of finished prints.

Monitor and ICIII Handling Precautions

If anything unusual occurs during operation, such as smoke, strange noise, peculiar odor, etc., disconnect

the power plug immediately and contact your dealer. If you continue using the equipment in that situation,

fire, electric shock or a breakdown may result. For details, refer to the operating instructions for the

monitor.

In case you spill liquid or drop something into the housing, disconnect the power

plug immediately and contact your local dealer.

Do not obstruct air vents.

Do not place the monitor close to magnetic fields.

ICIII

To prevent damage to the system, abide by the following points.

Do not install any application software other than those described inthis manual without Fujifilms consent.

Do not modify the data structure or data in the hard disk. Do not open the ICIII or other equipment without the consent of

Fujifilms service representative. Do not add to or modify expansion cards or RAM cards.

Do not reboot using the [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] keys. To shut down the system,

perform the post-operational check.

Media Handling

IMPORTANT

Before removing the media from the media reader or drive, make sure that the access LED has

completely gone out. If it is removed while the LED is still lit, the data in the media may be corrupted.

IMPORTANT

If the system is turned off or shut down while reading the data, corruption of data may occur. Make sure

not to turn off ICIII or media drives. To prevent unexpected data loss, it is strongly recommended to use a

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).

IMPORTANT

For SD/Memory Stick/Compact Flash:

Keep the following points in mind when handling or storing the media.Make sure dust or debris does not collect on the terminal.

Do not damage or drop the media.

Do not place the media near a heat source.

Do not leave the media in a high-temperature, high-humidity place for a long time.

For CD:

Keep the following points in mind when handling or storing the CD.

Make sure dust or debris does not collect on the reading surface of the CD.

To remove any dust or debris adhering to the reading surface, use a soft cloth to wipe it off,

starting from the center and moving to the outside.

When wiping off dust or debris, never use any solvent such as benzine, thinner, anti-static

cleaner.

For FD or/and MO:

Never open the shutter to touch the disk. If the shutter is open, close it before inserting it into the

drive.

Do not place the media near a heat source.

Do not leave the media in a high-temperature, high-humidity place for a long time.

Make sure dust or debris does not collect on the terminal.

Using the Mouse

Selecting Items

Move the tip of the pointer to an icon, dialog box option, or menu item.

Click the left-hand button of the mouse.

The selected item is highlighted.

Moving the Pointer

Move the mouse on a level surface.

The pointer moves on the screen..

Click: Press and release the left-hand button of the

Creating Prints and Other Products from Digital

1 Launch the software, if necessary.

The View Ordersscreen opens.

2 Click the New Orderbutton.

The Order Info >IDfield enables.

3 Enter an ID number (also known as order ID) in the IDfield.

Note: The software may be configured to automatically create an incremental ID number.

The ID number can be 16-digits or less. The field will only display 7-digits but can be highlighted

(by selection) and scrolled by dragging the mouse across the remainder of the digits.

4 Enter the Lastand Firstname of the customer (optional).

5 In the Whole Roll Products2group box . . .

From the Printsgroup box:

Select a print size from the drop-down

menu.

Select a surface type from the drop-down menu if the default surafe of

Glossy is not desired.

Use the spin control to change the

quantity of the product selected.

you want the date to be printed on the

Select crop mode from the drop-down

menu. Options include Fill In, Fit In

and No Resize.

Only the viewable image files display.

Note: While images are loading, all buttons on the View Ordersscreen will be disabled. Once all

images have been loaded, the buttons will enable.

8 Browse to and select the file or files to load. The Input Digital Filesdialog box provides several

tools for image acquisition:

Drives list: This list box displays all drives currently holding digital image files.

Fileslist: This list box displays all of the images stored on the drive currently-selected in the

Driveslist box.

Preview: Allows users to view a thumbnail of the currently-selected image.

Import Selected: Imports only the selected files from the selected device.

Import All: Imports all image files from the selected device.

Sweep Network: Scans predefined network locations for images.

Refresh: Re-sweeps the drives looking for images if media has been added or removed.

Apply Image Intel ligenceTM

: Applies Fujifilms Image IntelligenceTM

technology to the image files.

(This can be done as images are loaded or when they are processed, depending on whetherImage Intelligence has been deferred.)

Once imported, the images display on the lower section of the View Imagesscreen.

Products display on the upper section of the screen.

SP 1500/2000/2500

There are two ways to create an order, in Auto or Semi mode, based on whenthe operator inserts thefilm.

Important: Verify that the film guide on the carrier matches the size of the film the operator is ready to scan.

Important: Certain features, such as P. Set, P. Size, and H/P/HV settings, are not available in Auto andSemi modes.

>>> Creating a Multi-Roll Order from Film

A multi-roll order is an order that contains more than one roll of film. If the customer has multiple rolls of

film and would like to order a CD, the operator can put the images from multiple rolls onto the same CD.

The number of rolls that can be placed on a single CD is dependent on the image sizes and the capacity

of the CD. Each roll in a multi-roll order now has a unique Film ID included in the backprint information.

Previously the Envelope ID was used for the entire order. The first roll of prints, index prints, and

receipts continue to display the Envelope ID. For example, if the Envelope ID is A555001 and the

following rolls are A555002, A555003, A555004, etc., the backprint on the prints correspond to the

number entered. The backprint on the first roll is A555001, the second A555002, etc. The backprint on

the indexes and receipts is 555001. If the operator tries to scan a new roll while the previous roll is

processing, a message displays instructing the operator to wait for that roll to finish processing before

proceeding.

Verify that the film guide on the carrier matches the size of the film ready to scan.

Making Quick Prints of Selected Images

1 Navigate to the View Imagesscreen to locate an order for printing.

2 Select the images to be printed.

3 Click the Quick Print button.

The Quick Printdialog box opens.

4 From the Productdrop-down menu, select a print size.

5 From the Quantitydrop-down menu, select a value.

6 From the Surfacedrop-down menu, if Glossyis not desired select a different paper type.

7 From the Colordrop-down menu, select a coloring for all of the prints:C = Color

B = Black and White

S = Sepia (antique coloring)

8 If printing defined text on the back of the print is desired, select the Backprint check box and enter

text into the associated text field. (It will appear in the second line of the backprint.)

9 Select the Front Printcheck box if you want to print on the front of the print.

10 Select the No Cropcheck box to print the full, un-cropped image within the print size selected.

If necessary, white space will be used to fill in edges and retain aspect ratio. (The white edges are

not visible in the Print Previewscreen, but they will display when the order is printed.)

11 To preview and crop the image, click the Print Previewbutton.

This function resends the specified product of a processed order to remake the same order.

1 On the View Ordersscreen, double click the processed order that you want to reprocess.

The View Imagesscreen displays.

4 Click the Remakebutton.

The Remakedialog box opens

Creating Digital Images Using Flatbed Scanners

1 If a new order is desired, press the

New Order button on the ViewOrders

If scans need to be added to an

existing order, open that order and

proceed to step 5.

2 Enter the necessary customer information.

4 Click Cancel to dismiss the resulting dialog box.

5 Place the two dimensional object that needs to be scanned, on the glass of the flatbed scanner and

close the lid.

Note: Ensure the image that needs to be scanned is facing down towards the glass.

revealing the progress of the scan.

When the scan is complete the Epson

Scanner dialog will return to focus. Repeat

steps 9 and 10 as needed for any other scans.

10 For more control of a scan, click theAdvanced Scan

button.

The Epson Scan dialog box will open.

Note: The appearance of the Epson Scandialog box

depends on the scanning mode that is selected in the

Modedrop-down menu.

Follow the manufacturers instructions that came with

the scanner to select the appropriate scanning mode.

When the scan is complete the Epson Scannerdialog box will return to focus.

Switcher Application

The SW Launcherbar contains shortcuts to

enable access to other MS01 programs and

scanner software.

By default the SW Launcherbar is

expanded at the bottom of the View Orders /

View Images screens.

To contract the SW launcherbar the

operator must click the right side Hide/Show

button. Once the bar is collapsed click the

same button to expand it.

The SW Launcherbar can be configured, using the Maintenanceapplication, to contain icons of the

operators choice. Once the SW Launcherbar has been properly configured, clicking on any of the

icons will open the corresponding software application and bring it to focus.

Using the Adjust Images Setup 1 Tab

In this section, you will learn aboutAdjust Images :

Auto Correction

Toggling theAuto Correction button to the Onposition applies pre-defined Fuji

proprietary parameters for color correction, density and sharpness.

Scene Correction

This button adjusts the contrast based on the selected option. The options for this

button are designed to represent the lighting conditions when the picture was taken.

The Cloudy Skyis designed to add contrast to the image since a cloudy sky has a

tendency to flatten images.

Backlight is designed to brighten the part of the image that is in the foreground.

Strobe is designed to add more contrast and brightness to the background part of the

image.

Standardis part of the Auto Correction tool.

None applies no adjustments to the selected image.

Red Eye Correction

Toggling the Red Eye Correctionbutton to the Onposition automatically corrects red

eye on selected images.

Custom Channels

The Custom Channeldrop down menu

allows the selection of user created custom

channels.

In the Channel Namefield, type a name for the new

channel.

In this example, it was named Hyper-sharpness off.

It is useful if the name gives some type of indication of

what the channel will do to the selected image(s)when the custom channel is used.

>>> Sharpness and Color Balance tab:

In this tab there are three areas of control.

The Channel Color Balancegroup box features

enable the operator to change an image using

customizable CMY values.

The Sharpness Processarea allows the operator to

change the image based on predefined sharpness

levels. If the radio button is set to USM (Unsharp

Mask), the Sharpness level options below this field

are enabled and allow the operator to change the

sharpness of the image based on predefined values. If

the Sharpness Process is set to OFF, no sharpness is

applied to the selected image(s) when this custom

channel is selected.

The Sharpness Levelarea is only available if USMis selected in the Sharpness Processfield. Once

enabled, the operator can choose which of the seven different settings needed to adjust the sharpness of

the image(s). The normal and high settings will apply varying degrees of sharpness to the image when

the channel is applied. The low setting will de-focus (i.e., provide soft focus to) the image when applied.

>>> Gamma Adjust, Basic Color Mode, and Bright Mode tab:

There are three different areas on this tab:

Graduation Adjust, Basic Color Mode, and Bright

Mode.

Graduation Adjust: Graduation is a consistent and gradual change from the highlight of an image to the

shadow. The values are preset to accomplish smooth changes with varying contrasts.

Basic Color Mode: This control adjusts the contrast of flesh tones.

Standard is a special mathematical formula for a standard scene.

Portrait mode tends to make flesh tones smoother by lowering the contrast of the skin tones. Other

objects in the scene can also be affected and the result can be a slightly lower contrast print.

Bright Mode: This control adjusts the saturation without affecting the flesh tones in the image.

By selecting +4, the saturation of all colors except flesh tones are increased. In contrast, if the operator

selects -2, all the colors except flesh tones are de-saturated.

>>> Saturation and Auto Correction tab:

This tab has several different areas that can be used

to adjust the Saturation of the image(s) selected.

These areas are Auto Correction, Monotone Setup,

Scene Curve, and Saturation Setting.

Auto Correction : With this setting the operator can individually adjust the Densityand/or the ColorCorrectionsetting whenAuto Correction is selected.

When Auto Correction in the Adjust tool is set to ON, this adjustment to the Density and Color Correction

is applied. The button must be set to ON for these changes to go into effect.

Monotone Setup: Clicking this button allows the operator to convert the image to BW (Black and White),

Sepia 1 (shades of brown), Sepia 2 (a mixture of black and white and sepia), User BW (user defined

settings for black and white), User Sepia 1 (user defined settings for Sepia 1), or User Sepia 2 (user

defined settings for Sepia 2).

The user-defined BW and Sepia options can be configured in the Maintenance program.

In Support mode (or any mode that allows access to the Start Menu), click Start > Maintenance.

Select 04 ImageSettings > 0401 ImageAdjustOptions.

Change the values in this dialog to customize the User BW, User Sepia 1, and User Sepia 2 settings.Scene Curve: This button adjusts the contrast based on the selected option. The options for this button

This button controls the clarity of detail in the selected image(s) by slightly adjusting

color around edges.

Options in the drop-down menu range from High 3 to Low 3.

Skin Tone Customization

Selecting this feature opens a Skin

Tone Customizationdialog box

with sliders for Hue, Saturation ,

Light, and Tone.

These allow you to increase or

decrease the color, the purity of the

color, the lightness/darkness, and

the contrast.

Addi tional Tools

This button opens a three-tabbed window allowing the operator to implement

overall color balance, brightness, contrast, and more.

Al l Tab:

Allows the user to adjust the Cyan/Red, Magenta/Green, and

Yellow/Blue globally to the selected image(s). In this tab the

operator can also control Brightness, Saturation, Contrast, and the

Sharpness of the image(s) selected.

All the slider bars can be dragged to the desired spot OR the

colored buttons at the end of the slider can be clicked to advance

the slider towards the button clicked. Clicking the colored button at

the end of the slider moves the slider one step closer to the clicked

colored buttons. Also the operator can right-click anywhere on the

slider bar and the slider will immediately move to that location.

Histogram:

The operator can use the histogram to adjust the tonal values of

an image.

When the operator double-clicks the histogram, the adjustment

buttons automatically move to the closest measurable value.

Manually slide the highlight, midtone, or shadow adjustment

sliders to the desired location. The image changes accordingly.

Curves

The operator can use the Look-up Tables(LUT) to make repeatable color adjustments to the image.

Load a pre-existing LUT or create a new LUT to save and use for other jobs or images.

>>> Using the Look-Up Tables

1 From theAdjust Imagescreen, select one or more images on which to adjust the color.

2 Click LUTs. The Image Look-up Tables

dialog box opens.

Drag the shadow, mid-tone, or highlight adjustment buttons on the red, green, blue, or light/dark

LUTs until the image represents the correct values.

Note: To fine-tune the image, the operator can add another adjustment button to any LUT by

clicking .

After making an adjustment to a LUT, the operator can reset it to its previous setting by double-

clicking within the LUT.

To reset all the LUT graphs to their previous settings, click Reset All.

3 To save the LUT, click Save. The Look-Up Table Filedialog box opens.

4 Navigate to the desired location where the LUT will be saved.

Note: The labs default LUTs are stored in C:\fes\datafiles\LUTs.

5 Type a name in the File name field. Include the LUT suffix.

6 Click Save. The LUT is saved.
