Course in Depth

What will I study?

You will study cyber security from the perspectives oftechnical aspects of network security, penetration testingand computer forensics, while also adopting a systematicapproach to information security management.

The programme will cover topics including informationsecurity management; information risk management;implementing secure systems; information assurancemethodologies and testing; operational securitymanagement; incident management; audit, assurance andreview; and business continuity management.

How will I study?

The course is delivered primarily as taught modules. Eachmodule typically involves a 3-hour face-to-face seminarevery week for 12 weeks. You will study three moduleseach semester on the full-time programme, requiringattendance two days per week. For part-time students, modules are scheduled to enable evening study over twoyears.

Learning and teaching involves a variety of techniques, including lectures, case studies, problem-based learning, guest lectures from industry experts, student-ledseminars, one-to-one tutorials, and technology-enhancedlearning (such as via a virtual learning environment).Classes are highly interactive, with the practicalapplication of concepts being a key factor, as well as casestudies drawn from real-life.

How will I be assessed?

We will assess your vocational capability, academiccritical thinking and intellectual development throughoutthe programme. Coursework, case studies, exams andproblem-solving exercises may be used. You may beassessed individually or in a group.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by highly qualified, experienced andenthusiastic academic staff who are research-active andfully engaged with the wider business and academic

community.

Modules

CIS4114: Research and Development Project (60 credits)Research and Development Project provides experience of designing and executing a substantial project in a limitedtime, based on a project plan, employing practical skills, problem solving and underpinned by relevant research. You will apply and extend skills and knowledge learned in taught modules and demonstrate your competency toconstruct and complete a coherent project as a Computing professional.

CIS4115: Research Methods (20 credits)Research Methods provides you with the knowledge and skills to develop a proposal for, and subsequently undertake,a research project at Masters level. You will engage with the essential considerations when analysing a problemand designing a solution. The module will also immerse you in data collection from the user, literature reviews, interface designs and project planning. On successful completion, you will have a well-formed proposal suitable forMasters level study.

CIS4116: Emerging Technologies (20 credits)Emerging Technologies equips you with an advanced understanding of emerging technology and develops theappropriate skills to critically evaluate their suitability, impact and applicability to new scenarios. The module alsostrengthens your ability to identify and analyse ethical issues related to the use of new technology for bothdevelopment and research purposes, including an overview of the professional and legal constraints within whichcomputing specialists operate.

CIS4121: Computer Forensics (20 credits)Computer Forensics involves the examining and analysing of data retrieved from various computer storage mediums, the results of which can then be used as evidence in a court of law. The module provides a firm foundation in thedeveloping field of information retrieval, enabling you to develop an understanding of the theory and practice ofcomputer forensics. You will develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake a forensic computinginvestigation in a systematic manner, utilising a variety of methods, tools and techniques.

CIS4122: System Penetration Testing (20 credits)System Penetration Testing provides an introduction to the ethics, principles and practice of an essential componentof information security, systematically analysing system vulnerabilities and their exploitation. The process providesevidence of the effectiveness of system security controls. It is sometimes called 'ethical hacking', though professionallyit is referred to as system penetration testing.

CIS4123: Biometric Security (20 credits)Biometric Security provides you with in-depth knowledge of authentication, authorisation and identificationtechniques. With the advent and boom of mobile devices the amount of authentication attempts we make hasincreased exponentially. Therefore the need to devise and develop secure authentication techniques, and safeguardthe authenticated information, has become more and more important. Coupled with the huge amount of personal datathat is held within systems used daily, the detection and prevention of false authentication techniques is a vitalcharacteristic of any secure system. The module offers a modern focus on biometric devices and biometric securitysystems. It will enable you to identify traditional security techniques, such as password and key-based environments aswell as novel techniques such as biometric security solutions.
