Congratulations on your offer!

This new online MSc programme draws together multi-disciplinary expertise from across the University of Edinburgh to deliver first class teaching through distance learning.

The global burden of disease is shifting: non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, mental illnesses and chronic respiratory diseases now account for 60% of all deaths globally, 80% of which are in low- and middle-income countries.  These diseases disproportionately impact on the poor and vulnerable within all societies, they threaten socioeconomic development and destroy the health of millions. Through this innovative, flexible, online distance learning programme, the University of Edinburgh Global Health Academy is seeking to educate a generation of NCD champions: individuals from across the globe who have the knowledge and skills to lead the fight against NCDs.  The course has been designed with working professionals and hard-pressed health systems in mind: because the programme is delivered entirely online, students can combine studying with work commitments.

We look forward to welcoming you to the programme

Programme Delivery

Study commitments

The programme is delivered using an innovative blend of online learning opportunities supported by online learning environments. The programme is designed in such a way that, with access to the internet, you will be able to study at the times and in the places that suit you best. The programme will involve mixed teaching approaches, including independent study and reflection, as well as online discussion and group project work.

During term time, you should be prepared to spend an average of 20 hours a week engaged in course materials, be that reviewing lecture notes and case studies, interacting with fellow students and the programme team on the discussion board, researching areas of interest or preparing assignments. As this is an online course there is plenty of flexibility in terms of choosing when and where to study, as well as the pace at which you work.

Key Staff Profile

Dr. Ruth McQuillan, Research Fellow

My PhD was focused on characterising genome-wide homozygosity and investigating its association with quantitative traits. I have continued to do some work in this area, in addition to working on a study investigating the genetics of multiple sclerosis in Orkney and Shetland. I am just starting work on a new project, assessing levels of vitamin D deficiency in these populations. In addition, I am seconded for part of my time to Edinburgh University Global Health Academy to work on establishing a new distance learning Masters course in Global Health: Non-communicable Disease.SELECTED PUBLICATIONSMascalzoni D, Janssens ACJW, Stewart A, Pramstaller P, Gyllensten U, Rudan I, van Duijn CM, Wilson JF, Campbell H, McQuillan R. Study offers clues on memory puzzle

Scientists have shed light on why it is easier to learn about things related to what we know than to learn about unfamiliar things. The team says this is a paradox, as very different things are arguably more novel, yet adding to what we already know is so much easier.Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Tokyo have found that building on existing knowledge activates a key set of genes in the brain. These ‘plasticity’ genes do not respond so well to subjects about which we know very little, making it harder for us to form new memories about unfamiliar topics.
