Leisure Networks - Theory

Network society (1990s →)

*The ‘national’ market and national politics are increasingly integrated in a global context

*People’s lives (including their leisure) become tied up in local, regional, national and international economic, political, and cultural networks

*Technological innovations in communication and information (internet, gsm, social media)

*Boundaries between labour, care and leisure begin to blur: leading to feelings of rush/stress

Page 12: MSc Leisure Studies 24 april

Leisure Networks - Theory

*Leisure networks (f.i. Hyves, Facebook) are used for work purposes

*Leisure is used to create and maintain networks (f.i. via social media, sports, gaming, events, going out, travelling, etc.)

*Networks provide opportunities to give form to preferred leisure lifestyles

*Coordinating networks in leisure becomes an issue (where would we be without mobile phone?)

Page 13: MSc Leisure Studies 24 april

Leisure Networks

To understand these complex networks (e.g. to decide how government subsidies should be spent), you need proper insight into what all these different people and organizations do/want/say/think A scientific approach is needed to develop strategies for this network.
