The Architecture track draws on the richarchitectural tradition of the faculty.Teaching encourages students to developcreative and innovative building projectsthat use design as a means to deal with thetechnical, social and spatial challengesencountered in the built environment. Thisprogramme sets itself apart from otherarchitecture schools in the diversity ofdirections available. Students can choosefrom over thirty studios each with a differentfocus from conceptual to concrete, fromtechnical to theoretical and from building tocity scales. Each studio combines teachingby academics and practitioners fromleading architectural firms, including KeesKaan, Winy Maas, Michiel Riedijk and Dickvan Gameren.

ProgrammeThe master is a two year programmestructured with a preparatory year focusingon core subjects and studios followed by agraduation studio in the final year. Studentschoose to specialise in one of manygraduation studios, giving students a widechoice of options within the programme.Students develop an independent andacademic attitude and are given theopportunity to design their own projects inthe speciality of their choice, supported byan excellent infrastructure of model-makingfacilities, studio spaces and frequentexcursions, workshops and seminars. TheArchitecture track is one of fivespecialisation tracks within the Architecture,Urbanism and Building Sciences masterprogramme. On graduation, studentsreceive Master of Science degree inArchitecture, Urbanism and BuildingSciences (Architecture track).

Programme specialisationsArchitectural Engineering focuses on innovative, engineered architecture. Our society asks for smart and responsible solutions regardingtopics such as energy, flexibility, food, materials, mobility and water storage. How do we integrate new technologies in architecture toimprove societal issues and good anchoring in the context?

Architecture and Dwelling is concerned with the architectural design of our everyday living environment and housing. While investigatingconditions of density, functional diversity and contemporary lifestyles, in its curriculum the Chair of Architecture and Dwelling addresses twodiametrically opposed conditions: the Netherlands on the one hand and emerging economies worldwide on the other.

The Public Building design studios address the contemporary and future meaning of the public domain as realm of (ex)change in anurbanized society, as ‘place where strangers meet’. The focus is on how new architectural models, typologies, programmes, and designstrategies can be developed to meet public needs on different levels.

Interiors Building Cities explores a territory that ranges in scale from the extended interior to the intimate city. Working from a criticalunderstanding of an existing situation, students materialise the architecture of the public, urban interior as a place within which the concernsof contemporary society and culture can be embodied in a direct, immediate and inclusive manner

I found TU Delft to be an excellent university with amazingfacilities and faculty members such as: Kees Kaan, TonyFretton, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Patrick Healy, Jan de Vylder, andWiny Maas. The university offers an incredible selection ofseminars, debates, lectures and workshops thus providing asolid architectural infrastructure for ambitious students to have achallenging and engaging study. I would definitely recommendthe TU Delft if you are interested in studying in a top rankedEuropean university and would like to continue working inEurope after you graduate. My study at the TU Delft helpedprepare me to work in the highly competitive office of OMA.

I must say that one of the best things in Delftis the Architecture building itself, the BK City.I really enjoyed its relaxed and livelyatmosphere, especially the crazy colours andso many people working together.The best things were the numerous specialevents and the really good guest lecturesthat can be attended by everyone. Aftergrabbing a sandwich in the so-called BoilerHouse, on your way back to your Studio youcan stop by and listen to an interestinglecture or check out the new exhibition in themain hall.

The theoretical classes as well as theStudios were well-organised and theassignments were relevant and interesting.Many Studios deal with areas abroad, whichis inconvenient if you want to get to know theNetherlands, but on the other hand this doesgive you the opportunity to travel, and youcan still pick a studio project in theNetherlands if you prefer.

I personally was involved in projects inMarseille, Hamburg and Chicago, where Ilearned how to work and intervene in distantplaces, which is very important nowadays.However, the design approach in Delft is verymuch research based, with different levels ineach Studio which was hard for me at first.but it really taught me how to do researchand use it properly in architectural design. Toconclude I would definitely recommendstudying in Delft to everyone.

Complex Projects is concerned with thecontemporary condition where cities arerenewed by large projects rather thanlong term visions or master planning.Students learn how to deal with complexprojects that require negotiation betweenmultiple and often conflicting interests.

Heritage and Architecture focuses onthe re-use of existing buildings wherethere are demands for both continuityand change. Students examine thepreconditions for re-use and createdesigns that meet competing aesthetic,cultural, historical, technical andfunctional demands.

Methods and Analysis aims to be alaboratory for students who want toexplore pioneering ways to analyse,understand and intervene in the builtenvironment. Architecture is seen asmore than just problem solving or aresponse to programme, but thedevelopment of distinct approaches andtools.

The Why Factory explores the future ofurban life. Based on current andupcoming urban urgencies the studentsmake spatial scenarios for the city of thefuture. The master studios form anintegral part of the Why Factory’s ongoingresearch. Argumentation,parameterization and visualisation leadto visionary designs, including object,building and urban scale.

Veldacademie focuses on the complexsocial-economical issues anddegradation that many districts inEuropean cities face. As this studio issituated in one of Rotterdam’sregeneration areas students interact dailywith the site and the stakeholdersinvolved in its regeneration.

Architecture students can also graduatethrough other faculty studios: Transitional Territories – Water, Land, Infrastructure deals with the development of delta areas worldwide. The studio focuses on research and design projects that not only result inincreased safety from water threats butalso stronger spatial identities and newcohesions between city and landscape.

Design as Politics deals with theinterrelation between city politics,urbanism and architecture. This studio isnot just about making a spatial design,but also the development of a strategy inwhich the design engages with politicalprocesses to reach set goals.

Explore Lab provides an opportunity forstudents to undertake a uniqueinterdisciplinary graduation project that isnot supported by the other studios.Students must demonstrate the ability tolead themselves and others in theoreticaland design research.

Hrvoje SmidihenAfter finishing my undergraduateprogramme in Zagreb in Croatia Idecided to go on to study abroad. Since Iam very fond of Dutch architecture andthe Netherlands is so open towardsInternational students, the logicaldecision was to come to Delft.

It was a hard decision to make, to leaveall my friends and family, but in the end Ididn’t regret it. Even though there weresome tough moments, I spent two verynice years full of intriguing assignments,interesting lectures and nice people.

Career prospectsGraduates from this programme have anintegrated, design-led approach to tacklecomplex issues of the contemporary builtenvironment allowing them to take up adiversity of career prospects inarchitecture and related fields. Given theuniversity’s connection to importantindustry figures, graduates have goodaccess to job opportunities in theNetherlands and abroad. To obtain theright to use the title of Architect, UrbanDesigner or Landscape Architect afterhaving graduated from the tracks inquestion (Architecture, Urbanism orLandscape Architecture,respectively) you are required to firstcomplete a two-year period ofprofessional experience.
