Onaglobalscale,toeasethescarcityofland,hydrocarbons,mineralsandraremetalsandtoreducetheimpactontheenvironmentandonsociety,thereclamationoflandforindustrialpurposesandtheexplorationofhydrocarbonsandmineralsismovingmoreandmoreoffshoreintodeeperwaters.Toopennewhorizonsandtomeetthechallengesofthenearfuturerequiresthedevelopmentofnew,innovative,inter-disciplinarytechnologiesandmethodologies.Theexplorationofhydrocarbonsat3000mwaterdepth,floatingairports,trailingsuctionhopperdredgesof50.000m3,diamondminingattheseaandoceanfloorwithremote/autonomousoperatedvehicles,pipe-layingindeepwater,arcticengineeringanddeepseaminingwillallbepossibleinthenearfuture,butrequirealotoffundamentalresearch.
OffshoreandDredgingEngineeringcomprisesthedesignandoperationofsemi-stationaryfloatingsystemsinamarineenvironment,withthepurposeofexploring,exploiting,storingandtransporting/lifting(valuable)materials,likehydrocarbons,mineralsandraremetals.ODEalsodealswithauxiliarysystemsandequipmentfor
theconstructionandplacementofthesesystems,fordecommissioning,includingautonomousandremotelyoperatedvehicles.
Offshore&DredgingEngineeringisamultidisciplinaryprogrammeofferedbytheFacultyofMechanical,MaritimeandMaterialsEngineeringandtheFacultyofCivilEngineering&Geosciences.Asaparticipantintheprogramme,youwillpursueboththeoreticalandappliedstudies,includingamultidisciplinaryprojectandyourfinalthesisproject.
Offshore&DredgingEngineeringoffersthefollowingfourspecialisations:

Developingdesignsforcosteffectivenessovertheentirelifecycleofthestructureisapriorityaddressedintheprogramme.CoursesofferedinthisspecializationincludeBottomFoundedStructures,StructuralDynamics,FiniteElementMethodsandOffshoreSoilMechanics.StudentsinthistrackareeligiblefortheEuropeanWindEnergyMaster.TheEuropeanWindEnergyMasterconsortiumiscomposedoffourUniversities,worldleadersinWindEnergyandOffshoreWindEnergyresearchandeducation.DelftUniversityofTechnology,TechnicalUniversityofDenmark,NorwegianUniversityofScienceandTechnology,CarlvonOssietzkyUniversitätOldenburgTheEWEMpreparesgraduatesforacareerinresearch,bothinindustryandinacademia.
DredgingEngineering,Trenching&DeepSeaMining DredgingEngineeringfocusesonthedesignandmaintenanceofdredgingequipmentwiththegoalofdurableimplementationofdredgingprojects.Thesea-miningindustryisalsomovingtodeeperanddeeperwaters.Althoughoperationdepthsdonotcurrentlyexceed150m,itisexpectedthatwithin10yearsdredgingandsea-miningwillreach500mto3000m,requiringnewtechnologiesforresourcerecovery,aswellasmonitoringandcontrolsystems.DredgingEngineeringincludescoursesinDredgingProcessesI&IIandPumps&SlurryTransport.
FloatingOffshoreStructuresInextremelydeepwaters,theonlypracticalchoiceofstructureisafloatingstructure.Floatingstructuresarealsofavouredwhentheactivityinaparticularlocationwillbetemporary.Manyformsoffloatingstructureshavebeendevelopedovertheyears,includingship-likeformswhenspeedisimportant,andsemi-submersibleorsparplatforms,whengreaterstabilityisanimportantfactor.TheFloatingStructures–OffshoreHydromechanicsspecializationincludescoursesinFloatingStructures,DriveSystemsDesignPrinciples,OffshoreMooringsandDynamicPositioning.
Ship&OffshoreStructuresThecontinueddesignandinstallationoffloatingoffshorestructuresintendedfor20ormoreyearsofservice,combinedwiththeindustrytrendtoextendoperationsbeyondtheoriginaldesignlife,providesachallengeforengineerstoguaranteestructuralintegrityofthesestructures.Therefore,thisspecialisationfocusesonadequatestructuraldesignoffloatingoffshorestructures.Thisincludessubjectssuchasfatigue,ultimatestrength,vibrations,material&fabricationfactors,hydro-structuralinteractionandreliabilityanalysis.ThespecialisationFloatingStructures,Ship&OffshoreStructuresincludescoursesinFloatingStructures,DynamicsofStructures,Fatigue,NumericalMethodsinMarineTechnologyandApplicationofFiniteElementMethod.
