10/7/13- Tonya asked for discussion regarding the need for a course syllabus as well as a course map. Questioned if there could one document to provide both? After discussion committee concurred that this would be confusing to students. The suggested format for our syllabus from the candidacy review will be integrated into current and future syllabi. This changed format will consist of aligning the IUE Graduate Principles, MSN Program Learning Outcomes, and Course Learning Objectives in a table, versus the current “listing” that most of the syllabi were utilizing. Tonya shared an example from the R590 course.

Project- Faculty discussed difficulty of timeline for completion of student studies or projects. Discussion referred to NURS R500 (Research) course. Otherwise, R590 was approved as presented. It was noted that this semester is the first semester to run this course, so feedback will be elicited for changes at the end of this semester. Approved by committee.

R500- Research- K.

education track program and course mapping grids. Faculty discussed the best way to align the QSEN areas and decided at the course mapping level would be the clearest route. The Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes competencies were reviewed and faculty agreed these would thread through each course/course map differently, dependent upon the course. 2/10/14- Tonya and Paula shared their thoughts regarding the practicum hours that committee agreed upon with program initiation. Here are the suggestions for each: Education: a. 5 hours in-class didactic> change to 2- 50” lectures b. 50 hours clinical teaching and/or staff development teaching> remain the same c. 5 hours faculty/committee meetings> change to one NFC/Faculty senate meeting and One committee/task force meeting. d. 40 hours prep time, grading, evaluation, preceptor

came to consensus and agreed that the QSEN areas would be integrated via another column between the MSN program learning outcomes and the course learning objectives. Faculty will then highlight which QSEN areas are relevant. The competencies will be evident via the course objectives, teaching strategies and evaluation. 2/10/14- Faculty agreed to suggested changes. Tonya will revise and bring back to graduate committee for final approval.

Tonya shared concerns that the five hours for lecture needs to more specific and broken into smaller sessions. One student did a four hour lecture (against advisement) and it was not effective nor a very good student teaching experience. 3/10/14- Course map review for summer and fall 2014 courses.

Breymier explained the current text, Oermann’s Evauation and Testing in Nursing Education, is an excellent resource for overall program evaluation and weaker for class room and student evaluation. Tonya suggested adding the text, McDonald’s The Nurse Educators Guide to Assessing Learning Outcomes. Tonya reminded committee that students are more interested in evaluation of learning outcomes but the importance of program evaluation must continue to be stressed. Committee agreed to add the second book. It was also noted by committee that the amount of books purchased by students in the MSN program is minimal. A hands on assessment piece has not been integrated into the course(s) as this time. held in September to review the stats requirement in the graduate program. Schools from across the country have a variety of avenues they are taking toward a graduate stats requirement. During the special meeting faculty decided to eliminate the R505 from the graduate curriculum and admission requirements would include an undergraduate stats class with a grade of C or better, taken within the past 5 years. Discussion continued regarding the arbitrary number of 5 years and wouldn’t a review be needed if it were 6 years versus 10 years? Faculty decided that students who have invested in an undergraduate stats course would be better served to take an online review of statistical concepts. P. O’Malley stated there are numerous options and Tonya will work with Pat to identify the best option for IUE.

October 2014- Faculty reviewed the Systematic Evaluation Plan, Tonya noted the new SEP for this year will include the 2013 ACEN Standards. R590 (Scholarly Project) evaluations were received and all categories received agree or strongly agree from the students. The 2013-2014 assessment report that was sent to the IUE campus was reviewed as well as the 2015 goals for the MSN program. It was noted that many of the goals have already been met. Time was spent on the practicum portfolio evaluations for administration and education. Tonya noted that inter-rater reliability was not strong. Scores were quite varied and it was also noted that students were not very good at writing reflections or providing the evidence of their work. Tonya has asked faculty to think about a better process or possible faculty development for evaluating portfolios, to be discussed in November of 2014.

went line item by line item on the current didactic course, didactic instructor, clinical course and clinical instructor evaluations currently utilized in the undergraduate program. Faculty were in unanimous agreement that evaluations need to be specific for the graduate program and courses. Revisions are attached. Faculty decided to change clinical course to practicum and clinical instructor to practicum facilitator. The graduate program site evaluation was changed to practicum evaluation that will contain two sections: preceptor and site. courses, instructors, and practicum experiences at the December meeting. Some additional changes/revisions were noted: Key- Faculty discussed the awkwardness of a key that begins with 1= Strongly Agree. This appears backwards to faculty and some noted in the past students mark 4’s (across the board) because they assume the larger number 4 is good. The notion of changing the key was discussed; discussion also ensued regarding adding a 3 for “neutral.” Discussion ensued regarding the value of having a NA option with no number; this way if the student perceives the item to be NA, then the “no number” assignment will not skew the data outcome. The resultant key that was developed reads: 5- Strongly Agree 4- Agree 3- Neutral 2- Disagree
